You'll be hard-pressed to find a more inventive, perplexing sound than "nortec," the hybrid of Mexican norteno music and techno beats perfected by the Tijuana-based Nortec Collective. The group introduced its sound on 2001's Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Delight!
Let me start out this review with two overwhelming generalizations, both of which, of course, have many exceptions. First, I really enjoy electronica music. Second, I don't care for Mexican music. Now, having said this, you can imagine my mixed feelings about reading a review (in the Wall Street Journal, as I recall) about an album of Mexican electronica by Nortec Collective entitled "Tijuana Sessions, Vol 3." The review was quite laudatory. My curiosity was piqued. I couldn't resist ordering the CD.
4-0 out of 5 stars A great album
I stumbled onto this album at eMusic as I subscribe to it. Thinking what do I have to lose as I hadn't heard anything about Nortec Collective. I was suprised to find quite an excellent album. It's a fusion of big electronic beats with traditional Mexican music. I guess their name Nortec comes from a combination of Norteno (meaning from the North) and techno, which basically is describing the two different musical worlds colliding.

Adems de la obvias mezclas no debemos olvidar que el norteo es de por s hijo de la polka alemana y el folcor mexicano, asi que bueno, este es un remix del mix de otro mix...

5-0 out of 5 stars Fresh, upbeat, and a little funky
I received Seu Jorge's debut album Carolina in the mail today and have been jammin' to the toe-tappin' rhythm and Jorge's raw yet sweet voice.I don't understand Portuguese, and you don't have to either in order to appreciate this great, must-have album. After all, it was Brazil's Album of the Year in 2002.
4-0 out of 5 stars Get your hands on this somehow....
First off, "Carolina" is a really cool, fresh sound.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Singer Great Album
I couldn't agree more with Amazon reviewer "Violetta". This is a great album by a very talented man. I found out about this album after seeing the movie that Seu Jorge starred in "Cidade de Deus" ("City of God" - where he played "Man Galinha" aka "Handsome Ned"). After seeing the movie I bought the soundtrack which he sung the title song to ("Convite Para Vida"). I was so impressed that I thought I would give his album a try and it was well worth it! All his songs are funky and upbeat and very reminiscent of the funk/soul inspired sound of the 70's, with of course a modern twist to it. All the meanwhile he still stays true to his samba roots and is very proud to be Brazilian and showcases this well in his music. The title song "Carolina" is truly addictive! I can't stop playing it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A must buy for anyone that likes Cuban music
A friend introduced me to this CD and I think I might wear it out.Three of the songs are his own compositions, while the rest of the songs are Cuban favorites.Ruben approaches these these pieces with a unique light and and lively style. The music is infectious and makes you want to get up and dance.
5-0 out of 5 stars Farewell to Ruben Gonzalez
On Monday, December 8, 2003, Ruben Gonzalez died at the unregretful age of 84.Farewell to an unbelievably charismatic and talented musician! His death is the sad realistic reminder that as great musicians like him grow old and die, so does a priceless era of music that will never be emulated.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sadly no longer with us...
Ruben Gonzalez no longer is with us. He passed away yesterday. At least he lived a life worth living! He was one of the best Latin pianists ever, one of those (like a friend said) that you just don't find any more. He combined technique and charm in a way that few have been able to. Fortunately for the rest of the world, Ry Cooder discovered him, along with Ibrahim Ferrer and a host of other Cuban geniuses of Latin music with his Buena Vista Social Club initiative. After that album, this "Introductory" recording presented Ruben Gonzalez's work to the world in a more focused way. You are bound to respect this gentleman once you take a listen to this album. 2-0 out of 5 stars uneven, and not what it claims to be
This CD is actually a compilation of stuff recorded between 1992 and 2001, hardly the "best of" for an artist who has been recording since the 1960s.The liner notes are by David Byrne, but it seems from the credits that David Byrne did not actually choose the songs.
5-0 out of 5 stars CAETANO
Somethings are beyond space and time despite being in it, and affecting elements therein. Such is the voice of Caetano Veloso. So in lieu of offering a critique of "The Best of Caetano Veloso", I shall proffer my best attempt with the facet of myself that transcends boundaries in a psalm:
5-0 out of 5 stars Rare Fine Wine
Caetano's music takes a bit of effort to understand for Americans used to pop or rock. Those who put in a bit of effort will be rewarded with finely crafted art pieces that defy conventional classification. This cd provides a sampling of his latest efforts. Theres a lot of orchestration and refferences to cool jazz, big band Latin music from the 40's and 50's, and bossa nova flavored avant guarde soft poetic stuff. Jaques Morelembaums cello arrangements are sublime. All of it is so beautiful and unique. If you like some of it keep exploring his music. There are more electric works like Estrangeiro, Circulado and Tropicalia 2 with Gilberto Gil. All of it is of timeless quality. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A good sampling
A most distinctive singer. His clear mellow voice combined with that Jamaican accent is a perfect vehicle to express the range of emotions contained in his Caribbean flavored songs. Then there are other songs, less exotic, but still delivered from the heart. There are dozens Harry Belafonte albums, but this onerepresents an accurate cross section of what the man is capable of. No regrets.

4-0 out of 5 stars Probably the best compilation of the man on one disc!
I used to own the original best of compilation of HB but I was not really satisfied as I thought it was pretty short and the sound quality leaves much to be desired and so when this one came out, I quickly grabbed it.
4-0 out of 5 stars I could listen to this all Day-O.
This is without a doubt his best single disc collection, and with a written history in the booklet. Obviously it's missing a few key songs, but at 22 tracks it's hard to complain. Most of his best songs are here, including "Land Of The Sea And Sun", "Jump In The Line", "Cocoanut Woman", "Jamaica Farewell", "Man Smart (Woman Smarter)", and his early favorite "Day-O". Plus there's the Christmas time classic "Mary's Boy Child". Of what's not here, I miss "Scratch, Scratch" the most. His slower songs are some of the best ever, but it's his more upbeat ones that are so fun to sing along with, regardless of whether you're 7, or 57. ... Read more

With magnetic rhythms, cool grooves, and catchy hooks, the Mexican rock band Maná have conquered fans on both sides of the border. From the wickedly cool opener "Hechicera" to the pulsating "Un Lobo por Tu Amor," the tunes are easy to get into, regardless of whether you know Spanish or not. There's plenty of fun, too, on the rollicking "Tu Tienes Lo Que Quiero" and the zany "Clavado en un Bar," which became the tour anthem during the band's 1998 tour. Also bewitching are the romantic "En el Muelle de San Blas" and the achy love ode "Como Dueles en los Labios." The band is also daring, remembering political prisoners around the world on "Me Voy a Convertir en un Ave." Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This Album Is For Everyone
It's been almost seven years since Man released this album, but I still think it's a great album. This band, in my opinion, has been the most successful Spanish rock band. They have tons of hits and every single one of their albums is a monster album with many hits. Man also talk about many different kinds of things in their songs.

This is my rainy day cd that I always play when I'm down, its raining, or I can't figure out what else to listen to. I love all the songs, especially "Muelle de San Blas". 4-0 out of 5 stars So Hot It's Cool
I noticed that all the reviews are pretty short, so I'll try and keep mine short, as well. I bought this album around seven or eight years ago when I was a bachelor and living in a 600 square foot backhouse. Because my personal dwelling space was so small, I wanted to create an illusion that my place was big, spacious and open and I did that not only through carefully choosing my furniture and accessories, but by creatinga "big atmosphere" through the music I chose to play when I had guests over.

My friend Maude from DC turned me onto this disc a couple of weeks ago during a brief visit and I was captivated after the first ten bars. Her recommendation is that the cd doesn't do Lila's voice justice after seeing her live.Until I have that experienceI won't challenge the point. All I have have is this recorded representation by which to judge.Ms Downs uses her remarkable voice to deliver the most heartfelt and moving performance top to bottom to have graced my ears in quite a while. She covers a variety of topics and genres with originality and power making me mindful of any number of wonderful chanteuses.I will definitely be out in search of more titles (explains why I am here now).I've read people referring to Lila as the modern day incarnation of Frida Kalo(I'm certainly not here to refute that) but within a musical context she may be this age's Joan Baez. Thanks for the tip Maude. Most of all, thank you Lila... ... My favorite songs that I would listen a thousand times over and over again are Luca Mundaca's "Há Dias", Bia's "Mariana", and Bebel Gilberto's "August Day Song". The rest of the songs are as good though. So, if you are looking for a new beat to chill on a hot summer day or something that will help you relax whenever, you will get there with this album. ... While North American rap drowns in its own clichés, international artists are invigorating the genre with their own musical traditions. The Orishas, a Cuban group based in France, use Afro-Cuban religion to summon the spirit of hip-hop. Named for gods of Santeria, they came together in 1998 when members Yotuel and Ruzzo hooked up with Roldan and Flaco-Pro (a veteran of Sergeant Garcia) through a cultural exchange program between French and Cuban rappers. Collaborating with French hip-hop producer Miko Niko, they bring the attitude of Havana streets to the rest of the world, appealing to the Buena Vista Social Club crowd as well as the hip-hop heads. When Orishas released this CD I was still living in Cuba. I used to listen to these songs all day long with my friends. Then I moved to US and what can I tell you? 537 Cuba is like an anthem for me because it really tells the reality about the feelings of Cuban people and perhaps every person that lefts his country likes us. On the other hand, these guys are amazing! The mixture of rap with traditional Cuban music is something original, out of this world. I don't like hip hop music at all, but Orishas are the exception. Buy this CD, it worth every penny, you won't be disappointed!

This is indeed a great effort by this very talented composer. The music never gets boring, it's always shifting gears, which it's not surprising , since it is -after all- the original Soundtrack for the equally original movie. At times becomes similar to middle eastern pieces, at others undoubtedly South-American. This is a classic example of what one might call 'evolutionary' music which by no means should be confused with a revolutionary kind. Toots Hibbert is often compared to Otis Redding, and since Hibbert was greatly influenced by classic American R&B as well as the music of his own Baptist church, that comparison is certainly apt. But while he owes a debt to the intense, high-octane vocal approach of Redding, there is also a great deal of similarity between Toots and the great James Brown. In many ways and at roughly the same time, Hibbert did for Jamaican soul what Brown did for its American cousin--he made it funky and Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Not the Best Collection
While this is a very good collection, the double CD "Time Tough" includes all the tracks here, but does a better job of covering the whole Toots spectrum, and the sound quality is quite a bit better. So while I agree with the positive reviews here, you get a lot more bang for the buck with "Time Tough". And TT gives you a lot more of his latter work, when love and spirituality infused his work and raised reggae to a higher plane. Go on and spend the extra $10, you won't be sorry (like I was when I bought this then still had to go out and buy "Time Tough" to get a sampling of ALL the Toots and the Maytals I came to love through buying most of his LPs in the 70's and 80's.

5-0 out of 5 stars Toots & the Maytals Rule!
I was lucky enough to see both Bob Marley & the Wailers and Toots & the Maytals on the same double bill at the Beacon Theater in NYC back in the '70's. Until then I had heard neither. While Bob Marley was phenomenal. He did more with simply folding his arms than most rockers do flailing all around the stage & smashing guitars. But the true revelation was Toots & the Maytals. They didn't stop until they rocked the house. Listening to this "Best of" collection brings that night home to me. If you've never experienced Toots & the Maytals, buy this collection, and give it a listen. You won't stop dancing and swaying. I promise.

This is good time music.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tropicalia, again
It's nice to see more of this revolutionary era in Brazilian music released. However, anyone checking who was performinga main role in the movement, by looking at the Sargeant Pepper's-inspired cover of Tropicalia, the 1968 album, will notice that:
4-0 out of 5 stars pretty swell
if i were in charge of this project i'd change the following: more jorge ben, more gal costa, less mutantes, less tom ze (or better song choices), and maybe replace lost in paradise for a different caetano veloso song. notheless, this album is really excellent, and a great intro to tropicalia music.

5-0 out of 5 stars The 60s Happened in Brazil Too!
One of the best reveiewed ablums of 2006 (according to Metacritic.com), I was not disappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wailers' Classic Island Debut
By the time The Wailers began work on "Catch A Fire" in September 1972, the original group (Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Bunny Livingstone) had been together and making a lot of superb music for nearly a decade, but discounting the Leslie Kong-produced "Best Of The Wailers" (the title literally a misnomer, as it was not a compilation), until Island Records head Chris Blackwell bankrolled this project, they had never entered a studio to make an album. Classic singles for the Jamaican market, seminal collaborations with Lee Scratch Perry, self-produced gems on their own label, or Johnny Nash/Danny Sims JAD recordings all deserve to be heard and are easily available, but in 1973 the black music market had caught up with the trend that began in the mid 1960s when the Beatles, Bob Dylan, and Rolling Stones, who proved the youth/rock 'n' roll market was not just territory for singles, and the major artists of the era fought for artistic freedom and proved the 'album' was both artistically and commercially viable; thanks to the visionary work of Sly & The Family Stone, Curtis Mayfield, Marvin Gaye, and others, the idea of a reggae album seemed viable, and The Wailers were just the band to surpass expectations and create a unified classic.

5-0 out of 5 stars feel the heat
one ting immediately comes to mind when i listen to this disc... and that is, tight rythmn section.Aston and carlton barrett produced the heaviest, tightest rythmn section the planet has seen to date.I don't know if this album was originally released in the summer, but the beats have a lot of heat coming off them.I can only picture listening to "stir it up" and "midnight ravers" on a hot, sultry summer night."Slave driver" is my favorite wailers song, period. That song takes one on a painful journey over the unprecendented, melodic, soulful chorus of tosh, bunny and marley. The harmonies on "concrete jungle" interspersed with marley's lead are beautiful...and even though i wasn't old enough to understand that music lost wonderful possibility when tosh and bunny left, after listening to this disc i lament the fact these guys couldn't stay together.i really don't like tosh's lead vocals as much as marley, but the harmonies on "400 years" and "stop that train" make these songs almost as powerful as the ones where marley takes the lead.

4-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding collect of songs in both english and spanish from beautiful Tex-Mex tejano singer, cut down in her young prime
...by a fanatical jehovah's wit-less former
4-0 out of 5 stars The English Album-What the I'm Dreaming of You album should have been 10 years ago.
1. My Love-A good song though its slightly dated. It reflects the time in which it was recorded in.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Collection Of Selena Hits
I know that Selena fans will complain that her Cumbia hits are left off this collection, and being a hardcore Selena fan myself I would like to have seen "Bidi Bidi Bom Bom", "Amor Prohibido" "Si Una Vez" and "Como La Flor" as well as some live hits from The Last Concert of her peforming these hits, but there is only so many songs a studio can fit on to a single 80 minute Compact Disc. I personally would have included these tracks instead of "A Million To One", "Wherever You Are", "Captive Heart" or "God's Child".
