5-0 out of 5 stars I'd give it 6 stars if I could!!!
Stan Getz is in this sax player's opinion the best jazz saxophone player that has ever been recorded. His sense of melody is superb. He hides his amazing technical prowess, makes it sound effortless, and never gets in the way of the melody. Nobody else even came close to his melodic improvisations.
5-0 out of 5 stars Nostalgic; great memories, so easy to appreciate
A must piece of work in the latin genre to include in your collection; I've heard bits and pieces of these tracks throughout my life; it's about time I added all of them to my collection.
5-0 out of 5 stars Contrary to Mr. Gibson's jottings.
According to information readily available in the CD booklet, Jazz Samba was "Recorded in Pierce Hall, All Souls Unitarian Church, Washington, D.C., February 13, 1962." Not in a studio! That accounts for the warmth of the recording. It remains the standard against which all else is measured. ... Read more

If you're not accustomed to Juana Molina's otherworldly, electro-folk musings, be patient. The Argentinean singer's artful approach to music may initially be off-putting to listeners who like their world music bright and bubbly, simple and shiny. Molina's Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic album!
I heard a brief review and snippets from this album on NPR and was very intrigued--enough to pick it up on Amazon.I wanted to pick it up that day, but I couldn't find it elsewhere. It was worth the wait!Haunting, melodic, lots of different influences, and infinitely listenable. At the top of my current playlist.I have sent it out as a must have to several friends who have all thanked me for the recommendation. Now, I am going to check out her other albums.

4-0 out of 5 stars Canciones sin coros
On the surface, any similarities between what is commonly and reductively termed "folk" music (i.e., anything song-based and acoustic guitar-driven) and "electronica" (formless composition, laptops, synths, beats, bloops, etc.) seem tangential at best. Those who scoff at the notion of "folktronica" (or at least the term) have been given plenty of fodder over the last decade to justify their scorn. I'm thinking of the practice of gussying up already-finished acoustic guitar-driven songs with current-sounding electronic beats and hastily packaging them for public consumption.
5-0 out of 5 stars Juana's Most Mysterious
Juana Molina has been putting quiet Folktronica jewels for a while now. Not renouncing her Argentinean moods, Molina chooses here to explore wilder shores of Folk, somewhat reminiscent of Animal Collective, or Devendra Banhart in subdued moments.

Raul Malo'svelvety tenor is warm and dirty in all the right ways. As the primary songwriterand frontman for theMavericks and as a member of all-star bandLos Super Seven, Malo'ssoulful croon has bent round the blue notes of country and spread itself thicklyyet pliantly between and on top of the polyrhythms of Latin roots music. 5-0 out of 5 stars What a great voice!
His first solo effort, sans The Mavericks, is a great debut! His rich, strong tenor carries these songs well. The title track 'Today' is a lively upbeat number about being in love. 'I Said I Love You, and 'It Takes Two To Tango' are great showcases of his voice.
5-0 out of 5 stars muy bueno, raul!!

5-0 out of 5 stars New Tango
Tango: Zero Hour was the very first tango recording/CD I had ever heard. A friend of mine loaned it to me, not ever telling me exactly what Tango was- all I knew to think of was the dancers with the roses between their teeth, where the dancing was more dramatic than the music... So, my first mistake: having never heard tango. My second? Listening to it late at night in the dark. Music had never rocked my world quite like this... It was the most intense experience I had ever had with music. I was shocked. Wide-eyed. Taken aback. The version I had in my hands was the original with the liner notes, not the new shiny one that I now own (and that you can now buy), and the prose written on the card inside was enough to rip me in half without having ever heard the music. Tango: Zero Hour is not for the faint at heart. It is not for the light enthusiast. As the liner notes so eloquently said: "And suffer, Motherf*****. This is the Tango."

5-0 out of 5 stars Tango evolved to its most abstract and profound expression
Im ashamed to say I began listening to Piazzola at my mid thirties... well, better late than never... Im not a music critic, but all I can say is that Tango has a higher dimmension where it becomes universal and mayble the category of jazz (higher jazz that is) is best to classify it.
5-0 out of 5 stars A must
This is music to breathe and dream to. Piazolla at his best is probably the most enchanting and transcendental. It takes a Master Extraordinaire to make music like this, Piazolla's recordings only get better with age and never outdated because it is made up of the spirit and passions of a life lived richly. The Melancholy laments of the Bandoneon is truly one of the most haunting, nostalgic most beautiful musical Innovations ever made and noone interprets the manic poetry of it like Piazolla. I can't say much more then what the others have said here but this belongs in every serious music afficianado's collection. ... Read more

My Parents really enjoyed this particulay album when it came out a few years ago. This past month, we celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary and this CD was played throughout the grand party - bringing sweet memories and tears of rememberance to both parents eyes and their childrens eyes. Being that Mom is of hispanic heritage and dad's deep appreciation of that culture - that adds up to my love of this type of music. This CD is a treasure that will provide memories forever.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
I agree with the other reviewers.... this is one is also my favorite Lila Down's album...quite surprisingly.I am more taken by the proposal of other albums like Tree of Life, with their emphasis on less well known regional music from Oaxaca.Conversely....when I saw the song line-up, I thought...what a joke - these songs & styles have been done over & over again.... the last thing I need is another Ranchera & Norteno CD.But then I listened....was impressed....and bought it.

I read about Lila Downs' new CD, La Cantina, in Victor Cruz- Lugo's article entitled, "Sweet Sorrow," published in the June-July 2006 issue of Hispanic Magazine (page 76).
5-0 out of 5 stars I think this is her best!
Lila Downs can be a bit preachy or pc and I have no problem with that but this album is a GAS, both with the lyrics and the music. In fact, it sounds like she's having a lot of fun. When my son came along I put it in his room among other "kids" cds.My son, now age 9,(who won't listen to anymore "kid" cds) absolutely loves it.He has been falling asleep to this wonderful cd for the past 3 years.I loved being able to share "the world" with him through music.Recently we remodeled and unfortunately the cd was chipped! He was heartbroken... so here I am purchasing another!Soothing rhythms, soft voices, wonderful instrumentation. This is Jobim's finest album, although Stone Flower and Tide are certainly worth checking out.The songwriting on this album is sublime, the arrangements are brilliant and the execution is flawless. The melodies are minimal, yet strikingly elegant: they are small but very effective, impressionistic tone poems, each exquisite in its own right.

5-0 out of 5 stars Un disco delicioso.
5-0 out of 5 stars lilting?
I don't know what the lyrics mean because I don't speak the language but Juana Molina playing in a room is like lighting a smudge, it fills the room and pushes away a days lament and lets your positive thoughts float.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful from start to finish, a must have!
When I heard the track 'Tres Cosas' on radio one night I knew I had to get the album, and it's quickly turned into one of my favourites - Juana Molina's airy voice floats through a set of mellow and hypnotic tracks that flow perfectly from one to the next. It may create a more subdued mood compared to her album 'Segundo' but in my opinion 'Tres Cosas' is miles ahead of that one - it's more subtle and refined production lends it a warm, enveloping ambience - something that can be enjoyed more and more with each listen, even if you can't understand the lyrics! ... I love this CD (and the others in the series) because they instantly create the mood you are after. In this case, if you want Latin sounds and rhythms, you pop this CD into your stereo and you're instantly transported away. I often play this CD at work because it provides a nice backdrop of sound that's upbeat without being too distracting.

Yes,its true. From the first track onward, this album draws you in with its storytelling, spoken word and soothing melodies. At first glance, this wasn't something I would listen to but, alas after my first listen, it was hard for me to listen to anything else for a week!! 5-0 out of 5 stars Awsome musicianship, NOT too sweet or unvaried
I almost didn't buy this because of the comments about Tina's voice being too sweet and the songs sounding the same.A sweet soprano could sound irritating if not well trained and sensitive to the music. This is NOT the case with Ms. Malia. She breathes new life into old stand-bys like Rockaby Baby, which I didn't expect to want to hear twice. She uses her voice as an instrument and works to create subtle and enchanting effects with the accompaniment - particularly striking are the pennywhistle and the sax. And as for the songs, the arrangements are wonderfully varied. It's SO much better than the Disney lullaby cd I also bought, on which so many of the songs are so synth-saturated that even with different singers they do sound the same.
2-0 out of 5 stars Sticky Sweet

Jamaican filmmaker Perry Henzell made reggae an integral playerin his gritty 1973 saga of arenegade Kingston singer who becomes a modern Robin Hood, casting oneof the style's earliest stars, Jimmy Cliff, in thelead, and filling this soundtrack--here presented in a remasteredversion--with classics from Toots & the Maytals ("Pressure Drop,""Sweet and Dandy"), Desmond Dekker ("Shanty Town"), the Melodians("Rivers of Babylon"), and the Slickers ("Johnny Too Bad"). 'Damn you and ur wedding bells" Man Tanya has done it again got me going crazy over her cd. Tanya is true poet which is why her music captures u like that. Every track on this cd rebelution is the bomb i especially liked "to the limit","cherry brandy" i thought it was brillant. And of course "spill milk" was hot and "to the rescue" was so true. Keep doing ur thing Tanya I got alot of my friends listening to ur cd (which they're now hooked on).I even got them to listen to all ur previous cds and i'm not surprise that they all seemed to like 'goggle' and 'big ninja bike".

Editorial Review

Move over bossa nova! There's a new beat coming out of Brazil in the form of Cansei de Ser Sexy (Portuguese for "Tired of Being So Sexy"), and it's raucous. CSS consists of six 20-something São Paulistas who are injecting some international exuberance into the Seattle-based Sub Pop label. The only inkling that the group hails from the Southern Hemisphere is the smattering of Brazilian-tinged Portuguese that peppers the album, along with a barely detectable accent in lead singer Lovefoxxx's delivery. The CSS sound is far from traditional folksy world music; rather, it's a mishmash of '80s new wave, electronica, danceable beats, and cheeky lyrics (which are just a bit naughty). Think Berlin and Blondie, with a dash of Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Muffin Spencer of Brassy. This largely female group (all women except the drummer) will have you running to the dance floor in your slouchy boots and skinny jeans faster than you can say "Let's Make Love and Listen to Death from Above"--the first single from the album. 4-0 out of 5 stars Catchy electro garage dance rock
Female vocals w/attitude (like a bouncy version of Shirley Manson), retro synths, catchy guitar riffs and melodies, very danceable, extremely listenable, addiction to this album is inevitable. I can understand why they opened up for ladytron, though my guess is that they probably stole the show. As I get older it seems harder and harder to find music I like that's not derivative or makes me say "they sound exactly like _fill_in_80s_90s_band_ wannabes". This is not one of those bands. You'll find yourself singing to their songs (even though some of them are in Portugese). Fav tracks: Bezzi, Superafim, Let's Make Love And Listen Death From Above.

5-0 out of 5 stars Suprise album of the year
This album is great.I was suprised when on picked it up how much I would really learn to love this album. It's great.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hot!!!
This cd is truly amazing!I am totally addicted to it.I do warn you that the songs are almost too catchy to the point of not being able to get them out of your head. This band reminds me a lot of bratmobile. If you are looking for a really fun new band, this is it! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Cuban Music
This is a great example of Cuban music. There are 3 cuts on the album that have great 'feeling' and make you 'dream' of dancing with a lovely latin girl. If you happen to be dancing with a lovely latin girl, then you are all the luckier. Cuts 2, 6 and 9 are very rhythmic, and are great for 'close' dancing. Cut 9, is known in the English speaking world as "Green Eyes". I don't know the Spanish lyrics for cuts 2 and 6, but I hope they are very seductive.

5-0 out of 5 stars wonderful
I wasn't a Ry Cooder fan but I've discovered respect for him after these associations. Previous posters seem to think that Ry Cooder was the only guitarist, which would be a surprise to Manuel Galban. Ibrahim's voice is as amazing as his story. BVSC the film is basically a film of the sessions for this album. I think Ry deserves 'props' for bringing this music to a much wider audience than was expected. I'm sure people will read that as a 'whiter' audience as well. Lighten up, shake off the ghost and dance.
4-0 out of 5 stars Ry Cooder's awful

1-0 out of 5 stars Big disappointment
I've loved some of Shakira's previous songs, and when I heard "Hips Don't Lie", and the fabulous "Don't Bother" (I LOVE those lyrics), I just had to get the album. I put it off for a while, but saw it at a semi-reasonable price, and bought it.
4-0 out of 5 stars Many Layers of Flavor
To dismiss Shakira as a pretty pop star is to miss the point of who this gutsy performer really is. Long before she burst into the U.S. musical scene with her weakest and most pop-sounding album yet, "Laundry Service", Shakira had earned the respect of the Latin and indie rock music world with her uncompromising personality, her intense political views and her complex, sexually and emotionally charged songs. "Laundry Service" took away that credit for a brief period. But with the double release of her albums "Fijacion Oral Vol.1" and "Oral Fixation Vol.2", she gets it back with a vengeance.
3-0 out of 5 stars ~Shakira~
I was not as impressed with this CD as her Oral fixation vol 1. ... Read more
