5-0 out of 5 stars A must have .....
This compilation with Historia de un Idolo 1 is a must have for every Vicente Fernandez fan, fans of rancheras, and those who love Mexican music. This CD contains some of his most popular songs like Volver, Volver and De Que Manera te Olvido. The 2 compilations Historia 1 & 2 also has sn interview with Vicente Fernandez in the cover and some wonderful pictures including him recieving his star on the Walk of Fame. I was fortunate to see him live in Madison Sq. Garden last October and I was amazed at his voice, still beautiful and powerful as ever. He sang for two and haft hours without intermission. He is indeed a legend.....

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for fans of "El Rey"!
This CD is outstanding! Even those who burn thier own CD's would have a tough time putting together a greater collection of gutsy and classic Chente performances. Read more

While songwriter Celso Fonseca hasn't gotten the same kind of recognition as modern day bossa nova classicist Rosa Passos or electro-modernist Bebel Gilberto, he's truly a bossa nova talent worthy of much wider recognition. His last album, Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Delicate
Truth be told, if pressed, we couldn't really tell, say, a samba from a bossa nova from a cha cha from any other mid-tempo, Latin dance style, for that matter. We do know, however, that we are magnetically drawn to the sultry beats of nearly all Brazilian music.Celso Fonseca, a superb singer/musician, is our latest Brazilian discovery.Fonseca's self-produced cd, `Rive Gauche Rio', is an enthralling piece of work.Grounded by the gentle strum of his guitar, Fonseca's alluring ballads are buoyed by the tasteful presence of horns, multi-tracked vocals, gentle percussion and modern studio devices and techniques.Fonseca's melodies and performances exude warmth and sensuality. Unfortunately, we may have to learn Portuguese in order to properly assess his way with words (although two songs are sung in English, including an intriguing rendition of Irish folk-singer, Damien Rice's `Delicate').But really, with music this sumptuous, words hardly matter.
4-0 out of 5 stars i stumbled upon this 1...
i was on iTunes (as i am most of the time) and stumbled upon this album due 2 a "referral" and i have 2 tell u, it's completely worth every penny i spent!i've been a huge fan of bossa nova 4 a few years now and this guy's sound is very close 2 the original stuff (or the closest i've heard thus far).his voice seems 2 melt over the music like butter (ok that was corny).my favorite song on this album is "Pousada".so, check this out if u're up 2 hearing what the new sound of brazil has 2 offer!

4-0 out of 5 stars The coolest sound from Rio
The second Celso Fonseca album comes as a nice surprise to me. The first didn't impress me that much, but this contains high quality songs (well unless you are tired of the bossa nova stereotype) and a great voice, really a bit too much similar to Caetano Veloso but this is not a fault but a pleasure to me.

5-0 out of 5 stars memories
It was wonderful to listen to this music again.I hadn't heard anything from this duo in sooooo many years. Over the years I misplaced or lost my tape of the original Los Indios Tabajaras "Maria Elena".What a FIND! andto find it in a CD with a combination of 2 albums was even better.Iam so happy with my CD.

5-0 out of 5 stars Songs my father taught me!
I too heard the LP Maria Elena through my father while I was growing up. When I came across this CD it brought back so many memories. Listening to the samples took me back so many years. I can't wait to get it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Musichath charm to soothe the savage breast
I have listened to guitar all my life and heard a lot of great music. However, the music of Los Indios Tabajaras is ,unquestionably, the most exqusite I have ever heard.I don't know anything about the composition of music butI like what I hear. There are only a few who have the gift of being able to talk to many through their music.Los Indios are among that favored few.Thank God for C.D.s so that this genius will not be lost to future generations. ... The style of music is a tropical jazzy yet romantic sound. It is so enjoyable and relaxing.I don't know the language and certainly don't know about the artists, but because I heard the music from the movie is what moved me to buy it.It has intrigued my curiosity to learn more about thesounds and music of Brazil.

5-0 out of 5 stars I don't get it ... why remaster a masterpiece?
Nobody's reviewed the remastering yet. It's hard for me to imagine improving on the original CD.I'm an audio geek with mixing panel seat time mastering indy music and radio shows.I have a high-end audio system, on which Letter from Home in its original release needed no improvement, as far as I can hear.
5-0 out of 5 stars Be prepared to be transported to a magical, enchanting world.
Pat & his band are beyond words, they are SO TALENTED.I can't even begin to express how beautiful the music is on this CD. From the very first moment i heard it some ten years ago i was transported to a dreamlike world full of vivid colourful imagery and gorgeous skies. Just listen to "Spring aint here" and you'll see what i mean. I suppose the music contained could be used for many purposes..maybe as a soundtrack? This Pat Metheny CD can be listened to peripherally or it can be viewed as a statement of seriously intricate sounds. The rhythms are very complex as on "5-5-7", a stunningly exotic and enchanting tune where Pat sounds so much like his hero Wes Montgomery. The overall texture is Brazilian throughout, the arrangements are lush almost reminiscent of Jimmy Webbs "Macarthur Park" in places. "Better Days Ahead" is a fullblown Latin extravaganza as is "Beat 70". Luscious rhythms and just listen to Methenys guitar solo on "Beat 70"..it borders onto perfection!
5-0 out of 5 stars Sound quality
No one has mentioned whether the remastered version has noticeable improvements in sound quality.I already own the original Geffen cd & love the compositions, solos, arranging, etc.,What I want to know is if anyone had made a comparison to the Geffen cd.If so, can you mention any improvements: more realistic reproduction of environments, more open, tighter more accurate bass, etc., ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great French Caribbean music
We love this CD! Great variety, great beat, and even though we can't hardly understand a Fwench word they're singin', we love to listen to this music! Our favorite song is the one where we can make out "C-I-A, F-B-I..." Wondering always... :)
5-0 out of 5 stars fabulous!
Standard French Caribbean music, all with a great beat!I play it in my high school French classes that I teach, and the teens love it too!

5-0 out of 5 stars One of Putumayo's Best
An easy-going mix of biguine, merengue-ish extremely enjoyable tunes that get your feet moving.Five of the songs (half the album!) are among my all-time French Caribbean faves, and there are no dogs. You can't help smiling during "Parfum des Isles, a good-natured instrumental. The live Kassav cut, OK but not one of their best, is the only true driving zouk on the cd. The rest are more laid-back, but rhythmically more interesting and appealing, with an almost Brazilian feel. The four of us at work all love this cd, and it has held up well after repeated listenings. We recommend it highly. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars disappointment
Do you remember how great Conscious Party was when it came out?It was such a fun record and like Paul Simon's Graceland, whatever Ladysmith Black Mambazo album came out around then, it helped bring sounds that didn't originate in North America or Europe into pop music.Even Ziggy's last album "Dragonfly" was great.I'm not sure what happened to him recently, but this one is just lame. All that happy fun is gone and the songs are not as interesting as his older albums. This one is really just for the fans who have to have everything. If you are just getting into him or newer reggae in general, you should get Conscious Party, Dragonfly or even his Greatest Hits. Still, Ziggy is a great artist and his music is worth a lot of respect.Hopefully, Zig gets his act together and his next one is as good as this one should have been. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Ibrahim Ferrer Is a Spectacular Sonero
Ibrahim Ferrer in my opinion is one of Cuba's great Soners, Wow what a voice. This is a great collection of Ibrahim's Danceable music. It's a must have for any fan of Cuban Music. Highly recommended. I own two copies.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow!
Most people discovered Ibrahim Ferrer like I did. They bought Buena Vista Social Club and was entranced by this man's powerful and soothing voice. But this CD is different. The recordings of him from decades ago prove that he's been one of the best Cuban vocalists for years and was finally discovered by the rest of the world. This disc is a time machine that takes you back 30-40 years in his career.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic
I am not a big fan of Pat Metheny -- I don't know much about his other CDs, but I have to say that I absolutely love this one. The song Last Train Home is probably one of my favorite songs of all time. There is just something about it that takes my breath away. The same can also be said of the other songs on the disc as well. I highly recommend this CD.

5-0 out of 5 stars A five*star* stunner
I purchased the re-mastered version, and it sounds like it is live, i.e, you are there, only clearer. The songs are breathtaking, heart-breakingly lovely, and overflowing with joy, like a cool spring breeze blowing on you with the hot sun above.Sorry, Pat -- I think I broke that one getting it out.

4-0 out of 5 stars This collection could have been better
After listening to this 4 cd set several times I've come to the conclusion that it could have been better condensed into 2 spectacular jazz cd's. First of all, cd 1 starts off with what soundslike banjo. Who's bright idea what it to include it on 100 years of jazz guitar? There are also songs that are dominated by saxophone and/or vocals with guitar as a background instrument.
5-0 out of 5 stars Historical Integrity!
Everyone will find something of their own here, be it pre-Charlie Christian or late period Miles. My own contribution (as a reviewer) is to commend the compilers for a keen sense of history. Instead of simply falling into the listmania cliche of "the 100 best X" they have chosen players according to a wide variety of criteria. Two that JUMP out here are: (1) how INFLUENTIAL a guitarist has been regardless of record sales or fame; (2) how HISTORICALLY or MUSICALLY significant a given recording has been. In the first category I note the recognition of Lenny Breau and Sonny Sharrock who are far from household naems. In the second category I note theinclusion of tracks that point to landmarks in the evolution of music and jazz guitar : Birds of Fire, June 15 from Duster (Burton/Coryell), Bright Size Life. This box set will delight you if you are a well-seasoned jazz enthusiast or coming to the genre for the first time. A fantastic value!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential guitar history
A monumental work, this four-CD box set celebrates the evolution of jazz from the perspective of our favorite instrument. Featuring representative cuts from 75 pivotal players, 100 Years of Jazz Guitar offers selections from the dawn of recorded music (originally captured on Edison cylinders) extending to the present day. The adventure begins with a harp-guitarist strumming in 1906 and stretches to Bill Frisell's "Ron Carter," released in 2001. Relatively unsung giants, such as Lonnie Johnson, Roy Smeck, and Eddie Condon rub shoulders with the likes of Django Reinhardt, Charlie Christian, Tal Farlow, Wes Montgomery, and Pat Metheny. The scope is enormous-shifting from Sol Hoopii's bouncy lap slide to Marc Ribot's skronky sonics is a mind-bender-but that's what makes this collection so valuable. We hear the entire spectrum of jazz guitar, from swing to bebop to funk to avant-garde. There's plenty to read, as well: John Scofield penned the collection's intro (he also appears musically), there's a bio for every player, and 25 of the included guitarists reveal who they find inspiring and why. "Essential" is an overused word, but in this case, it's wonderfully appropriate. ... Read more

I have always been a big fan of Sarah's music but when I heard her sing these songs I was blown away. This music fit her voice perfectly. Wanting more and So many stars literally put me in a trance.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent romantic album
By the time Sassy recorded this album in 1987, the years of singing were beginning to catch up with her, so it is understandable that she decided to record an album of love songs. Sergio Mendes, a noted figure in Brazilian music, produced the album. The songwriters are unfamiliar to me but most of the songs were co-written by Dori Caymmi or Milton Nascimento, though these two never wrote any of these songs together. 5-0 out of 5 stars ID GIVE THIS RECORDINGS 10 STARS IF THEYD LET ME

5-0 out of 5 stars Toots Thielemans Explores Brazilian Jazz!!!
Toots Thielemans has been the leading harmonica player in Jazz music for over 50 years. With this CD, he explores Brazilian Jazz and makes it sound like it was created just for him.On this recording he has gathered some outstanding Brazilian Jazz musicians and let them do their thing while he adds his always splendid harmonica playing to the project. With the exception of his signature piece "Bluesette", all of the songs are Brazilian Jazz pieces and they are arranged beautifully.4-0 out of 5 stars Brazilian Jazz with Harmonica * * * *
This is a fantastic album putting together some of the best Brazilian composers since Tom Jobim with the Great Toots on Harmonica, the only great composer he missed from Brazil? Joo Donato and that is unforgivable. Other than that, it is a Must-Have Collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars Frenesi left me speechless.
I don't speak a lick of spanish, but it did not matter, because Linda's voice is perfect regardless of what language she is singing in. I'll tell you the truth, I did not think I would like her spanish CDs, but I was WRONG!!! At the end of each song my fingers were still snapping and my toes were still tapping. If you have not bought any of her spanish CDs, but were curious, then start with this one. You won't believe your ears, and it will leave you speechless. Thank you Linda.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect
While I agree w/ the glowing reviews written here already, I would like to note that this album IS in fact salsa; that generic term in fact does apply to music from Cuba, Puerto Rico, and other parts of the Caribbean, and not to Mexican genres.

I first heard Linda singing "Perfidia" on radio, found the album on a trip to Door County, Wisconsin, and was confused to find the recording in the album entirely in Spanish while the radio version was partially in English.I later found the English version was from a film soundtrack. That aside, this album of popular tunes in Spanish from the '40s and '30s mostly is absolutely ingratiating.Everyone I know who has it says it's hard to stop playing over and over...and over.Ronstadt is in magnificent voice, the arrangements are exciting and often surprising, the sound quality and production values absolutely first rate. Some of the songs are familiar by their English titles, such as "Magic Is the Moonlight." Part of the fun is finding a favorite song you didn't know would be on the album.Ronstadt is in her element with this music, passionate and forceful and dynamic.Don't miss this album! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great integration of styles and genres
As a salsa/mambo dance enthusiast, always recognized Cal's sound, finally asked somone who played it.So much better and fresher than some of the stale, heard-it-a-jillion-times releases of late. The bongo solos are dynamite!

5-0 out of 5 stars Deserves 10 stars
This is music that could raise the dead. My favorite track is Ginza Samba with it'sremarkable guitar opening by Eddie Duran and Tjader and Stan Getz trading solos. There is much more however. The percussion of Willie Bobo and Mongo Santamaria kicks butt on many of the tracks and on tunes Viva Cepeda and Afro Blue they are devastating. Armando Peraza (who later played with Santana) is also wondeful on the tracks where he is featured. Cal Tjader plays the vibes with an amazing rhythmic intensity that blends with the percussion and yet rises above it in some of the sweetest improvisation on this instrument ever recorded. This CD is wonderful and should appeal to fans of latin jazz as well as those who love the vibes playing of Milt Jackson or Bobby Hutcherson.Well worth checking out.

Editorial Review

Maria Rita could be considered the Norah Jones of Brazilian pop jazz/bossa nova for her familiar but fresh musical blend on this debut. She won 2004 Latin Grammys for best new artist of the year and best Brazilian pop album for her debut. The 13-track CD vibrates with her blend of traditional bossa nova, sophisticated pop, and jazzy freeflow style with the classic accompaniment of drums, piano, and acoustic bass. Although all of the songs are sung in Portugese, the varying sentiments of longing, sadness, celebration, and hope are not hard to understand. She is a strong, expressive singer who can shoot from a pleading whisper to a full-throated wail and back in a second. The daughter of famed Brazilian musicians--pop singer Elis Regina and and pianist Cesar Camargo Mariano--Rita is a fresh voice in a genre best enjoyed in speakeasy clubs and relaxed lounge parties. Muita Boa... what can I say,her music is GREAT !!!this CD is FANTASTIC !!!

3-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful voice, but what big shoes to fill...
I wonder how I would feel, listening to this album, if I'd never heard Elis Regina. It's true, the timbre of Maria's voice is almost identical to her mother's, and she demonstrates the same versatility of genre (bossa, jazz, pop, songs in Spanish, etc.). However, for me, the similarities stop there. Elis's creativity of phrasing and sheer raw passion don't find their way into her daughter's interpretations; Elis was one of a kind. But if you're looking for some pleasant, soothing vocals and great production values, you will find them in this album.

5-0 out of 5 stars impresionante!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars One Of The Greatest CD's Of All Time
This is Luis Miguel's breakthrough into romantic ballads and one of the best cd's you will own. It won't matter if you don't speak spanish because the music transcends language barriers.

Editorial Review

This immaculately conceived and packaged fundraiser for the AIDS awareness foundation is a sharp tribute to Brazilian pop. David Byrne, Milton Nascimento, PM Dawn, Stereolab, Gilberto Gil, and Crystal Waters (vamping through "The Boy from Ipanema") are among those weighing in with sophisticated tunes that will cross from cocktail hipsters to the leading edge of the mass audience. 4-0 out of 5 stars New Takes on Brazilian Pop
Now, mind you, I can't tell the samba from the bossa nova from...some other type of music that might be played in Brazil. But I still have an interest in hearing the quasi-tropical cocktail lounge-style pop tunes of this mighty South American giant. They speak Portugese there, you know. And are known to launch at a moment's notice into the lamabada, which is a forbidden dance.
4-0 out of 5 stars Listening Pleasure-RED HOT+RIO
I enjoyed 1.Used Your Head by Money Mark, 2.Corcovado done by Everything but the Girl, the funkie beats were great, 3.Desafinado done by Astrud Gilberto & George Michael was soothing and relaxing, 4.Non-Fiction Burning was enjoyable 5.Crystal Waters' version of The Boy from Ipenema, LOVED IT!! the music makes your body want to move, it will be favorite, 7.Seguranca (Security) done by MAXWELL with that sultry soft voice of his & the music, this is a favorite, 8.E Preciso Perdoar done by Cesaria Evora & Caetano Veloso w/Ryuichi Sakamoto on the keyboard, Damn I love Cesaria's voice, she got off, this is definetly a favorite, 10.Water to Drink by Incognito w/Omar & Anna Caram was nice, 11.Dancing by Milton Nascimento was enjoyable, 12.How Insensitive done by Antonio Carlos Jobim & Sting, I didn't care for Sting singing this song, I do enjoy Sting's music but not this, he wasn't the man for it. 13.Water of March done by David Byrne & Marisa Monte was okay, but I enjoy Al Jarreau & Oleta Adams rendition on "A Twist of Jobim" better, 15.One Note Samba/Surfboard by Stereolab & Herbie Mann, I didn't care for that techno or computer sounding stuff, it sounded like the music on The Wiz when they were trying to get away from the trash cans, it will get a skip, 17.Black Orpheus Dub by Mad Professor, it had sort of a Rasta, funk, techno flair which was okay, 18.Chico Science & X DJ Soul Slinger, I couldn't get into that either, that will get a skip too, 19.Funk'N Lata's Sambadrome, was short & funky, 20.Giberto Gil's Refazenda, his voice went well with the song, 21.Preciso Dizer Que Te Amo done by Cazuza & Bebel Gilberto was nice, but the sound was off, it sounded like they were singing in a tube. I manly purchased this CD because it had my 2 favorite singers Maxwell and Cesaria Evora & I enjoyed both of their songs immensely. I am totally satisfied with this purchase and it will be one of my favorite CDs which I listen to often.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for Jobim Fans
If you like Bossa Nova, particularly Antonio Carlos Jobim, you will love this CD. It has covers by many current artists of his songs, as well as some other Brazilian music. I like how the liner has the lyrics in English, but almost all the songs are in Portuguese. The David Byrne Waters of March in an exception, where he sings in English, and a woman is singing in Portuguese, but it works out very well.Read more
