5-0 out of 5 stars Great Guitar Duo
This is a fabulous, very high energy, instrumental album. Rodrigo and Gabriela combine their metal roots with latin melodies, and use the guitar as a percussion instrument in a way I've never seen before. See them live if you can. They grew up in Mexico city trying to make it playing in a metal band, and are now living in Ireland with this album that hit the top of the Irish music charts.

5-0 out of 5 stars AMAZING.
This is an unbelievable album, and I definitely recommend it. Rodrigo y Gabriela are two amazingly talented musicians. The way they mix so many different genres is incredible and makes the music they create unique, fun, and exciting. A friend recommended them to me, and I was a bit skeptical at first as I've never even really thought about listening to a guitar album, but now I'm completely hooked. I've found it's great to have on in the background in my dorm, and everyone that's heard it in my room has loved it as well. To sum things up, BUY THIS ALBUM! It is well worth it! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars After a few days I understand
I understand what some other users are saying when they complaint about the album having the same sound as some of their earlier work. However, even thought I haven't had the chance to judge for my self, I'm looking forward to it. One way or another.
5-0 out of 5 stars Same Mana we know and love
Im really satisfied with this new offering from one of "rock en espanol's" finest!Im pleased not shocked. It actually reminds me of alot of the previous Mana albums and i dont know if that is a good or bad thing.Like i said the album is great i love it just like i like all of Mana's albums however i would have liked it if Mana experimented with new sounds.I have to give it to the band because there is no way i can say this cd isn't good or original but it lacks an innovative touch.Rather than play it safe with "Mana" sounds (which we all know and love), they should have explored different synths of sounds.

3-0 out of 5 stars Tu es mejor en espanol
I love Shakira and have listened to her for years, but honestly she sounds so much better when singing in spanish. I am not a fluent speaker of spanish, but you can tell she has more feeling for the songs she writes and sings in spanish, than those in english. This album is good, but not her best. Hightlights on this album are Hips Don't Lie, and the re mix of La Tortura. I would recommend her first album, Fijacion Oral 1 over this.

1-0 out of 5 stars She has lost her unique identity
The question is: What has happened to Shakira? Where are her familiar, latin, explosive songs? This album has nothing that gives it an original Shakira identity, it's more like Shakira is trying too hard to lose her latina tamperament and become another Cristina Anguilera. I listened to the album once and afterwards could not remember the tune of a single song! The only interesting track is 'Don't bother' where the music is fine but the lyrics are so uninspirational! Furthermore, I'm getting a bit tired of seeing her in every single music video throwing liquids on her body and shaking her hips. Especially when you try to be a rocker, this nonsense a la Jessica Simpson seem so cheap, like you're trying to market yourself, not the music. Plus, she repeatedly 'thickens' her voice which sounds pretentious and at the end of the day, bad.
5-0 out of 5 stars Hits Don't Lie?
When i first purchased Shakira's Oral Fixation vol. 2, i was of course skeptical about what i was getting myself into.I purchased Laundry Service back in 2001 so i was hoping to hear a continuation of Laundry Service.Boy was i wrong and i must say, im glad i am.Laundry Service was an overall adequate listen, nothing memorable besides Whenever Wherever and Underneath your clothes. The first song of VOL. 2, "How Do You do" is so great! The raw beauty that comes out of this womans voice is just compeling yet at times i find myself wishing i could understand some of the stuff she says. I find her pronunciation confussing and tiring at times but with repeated listens to the entire album, i have found that it takes some getting used to.Once you get over the fact that Shakira's voice is unusual, you will see that her voice is a wonderful passionate instrument on its own.

Mario Vazquez delivered a great album of versatility and honesty. This is the real Mario the whole world was waiting for. Smooth vocals blending with great songwriting and quality production. Good for you Mario!! I'm looking forward to your next CD...!!!
2-0 out of 5 stars Highly disappointing
I was very disappointed by this CD. I was expecting much more after buying and listening to the Cesar CD. I can't complain about Mario's singing, but the song selection and style was no where near as good as the Cesar CD. I was expecting the beautiful latin style and rhythms. This was cheap hip hop sounding.

5-0 out of 5 stars Suprisingly GREAT debut!
Did not expect this CD to be as good as it is when I purchased it. Mario Vazquez is the 29 y/o who made it to the finals of American Idol in season 4 and then decided to quit for "personal reasons". Everyone was shocked because he was alread quipped as being a fan favorite. 2 years later he comes out with a very solid debut, self titled CD.

5-0 out of 5 stars Timeless chic !!!
This 1963 album is one of the best examples of flawless bossa nova music to date. Stan Getz playing the saxophone, Joao Gilberto on guitar and Antonio Carlos Jobim on piano blend simultaneously into a uniquely talented trio of musicians as their hearts and minds create one exquisite song after another.
5-0 out of 5 stars Does Getz Get Any Better?
This is truly a classic Stan Getz album. His rich, distinctive tenor sax sound melts into the bossa nova beat as if he hadinvented it. Getz's smooth collaboration with Joao Gilberto, Astrud Gilberto, and Antonio Carlos Jobim produce silky, sensuous melodics on every track. This is a must-have for the longtime Getz fan or anyone who has just discovered the legendary 60's bossa nova genre.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gut Wrenching Chillers, All of 'Em.
I loved Wes Anderson's The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou.I saw the movie three times while it was in theaters and still could not get enough.Seu Jorge's character brought so much to the movie and I was a little disappointed that the soundtrack did not have all of his versions of our beloved David Bowie. The Bowie songs are great. The Jorge songs are great.I could listen to either one for hours on end and still not get sick of hearing them.Knowing the Bowie versions well also is a thrill when you hear this album because it surprises your ears with unexpected turns in tone and acoustic sounds.A definite necessity for any beach BBQ, I highly recommend this album.

True to its intriguing and provocative title, Lee Ritenour's latest CD "Smoke 'N' Mirrors" takes listeners on a magical, multi-faceted global journey unlike any other in the legendary guitarist's three decade, nearly 40 album career.
5-0 out of 5 stars Lee in 2006
I've been listening to Lee Ritenour since the early 80's and love most everything he has done. This CD brings back some memories of older days which frankly I prefer and the sound quality is amazing. Several of the songs are dashboard banging upbeat tunes that are very unique, uplifting and infectous. Highly recomend. My only question to Lee is when are you going to tour again??

    4-0 out of 5 stars Smoke`n`mirrors
Well, pretty good album, but for a long time Rit fan there are a better ones! The last song on the album reminds me of an old GRP sound, but for me there is always a question of (modern) production... For instance, I am very pleased to hear Fender Rhodes keyboard on a few songs, but this modern drum production sounds so shallow and therefore the whole song sound (the songs are great) is shallow too! Anyway, a solid 4! ... Read more

Brazilian music is my favorite genre. From the wild creativity of Chico Cesar to the electric stylings of the late Suba, from the soulful bossa nova of Bebel Gilberto to the bossa nova-meets-Indian classical of Ana Rita Simonka,I've found Brazilian popular music joyous&diverse. After all,I grew up listening to Sergio Mendes&Brasil '66!I was subtly enchanted by his songs. So,I was curious about "Timeless",since it's prominent at many a Starbucks.

To be clear, I am a big Sergio Mendes fan.I have always appreciated his musical sensibilities: smooth, sophisticated, eclectic.Perhaps the original "world music purveyor." I have derived enjoyment from every one of his musical incarnations/combinations, through the sixties, seventies, and beyond.

It is as good as expected and more. All the songs are great, maybe with the exception of 6. Escondite Ingles. My personal favorites are 2. La Pared 7. No and 8. Las de la Intuicion. If you like Shakira this is a must have, especially for those that loved her previous spanish language albums.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not perfect but Shakira's voice makes it great
Shakira is brilliant. Not only does she produce and write her own material, she sings in what I describe as the music business female sex's most unique bleat.Usually my reviews come from a third person perspective (since any critic knows that's the best way to approach a review), but it's hard to describe Shakira's musings without inserting my personal feelings and opinions toward and about it."La Tortura" is the biggest hit here, of course, and deservedly so.It's simply the best Latin pop song to come along in a long time. The beat, the poetic lyrics and that voice all combine to produce one awesome track.Fijacion Oral is a mismash of genres and, unfortunately, only a couple songs can even come close to approaching the instant smash "La Tortura" is.Opener "En Tus Pupilas" (featured on the later Oral Fixation album in English) is decent and sounds somewhat European."La Pared" is one of Fijacion's better moments."Las De La Intuicion" is the record's second best track with its disco-infused melody and charge-forward beat."Lo Imprescindible" use of thundering drums adds rock flavor to Fijacion while "Dia De Enero" is girlish fun.Though I prefer the English language Oral Fixation to the Spanish Fijacion Oral, with each listen this record just keeps getting better and better.

3-0 out of 5 stars The English Oral Fixation is better
Colombian rock goddess Shakira is quite the performer. The talented hip-shaker extraordinaire gives an impassioned performance in her trademark throaty-and-nasal bleat over the course of 12 addictive Spanish language tracks that make up Fijacion Oral Vol. 1.The standout here is, of course, the No. 1 global smash "La Tortura" featuring sexy call-and-response dialogue with Latin singer Alejandro Sanz ("La Tortura" is also presented in a remixed format but sits far below its original mix). The opener (featured in English on the later English language Oral Fixation Vol. 2) "En Tus Pupilas" is soft and sensual with its European-influenced mystique and chordal Spanish guitar, but unfortunately it's not one of Fijacion Oral's most memorable moments (aforementioned "La Tortura" holds that spot deservedly) and could keep listeners from delving deeper into the complex and individual workings of the remainder of the album. The bleaterrific "La Pared" showcases Shakira's rich and unique vocals, and is offered up in both original and acoustic versions."Lo Imprescindible" officially closes the record with its thundering drums and incredibly rock-oriented rhythm and beats. In the end, it's an interesting listen with few highs, but the English language Oral Fixation Vol. 2 is much more consistent and likable. ... Even though he's no Rude Bwoy, Sean Paul has expanded the notion of dancehall (at least in the US) more than any single artist since Shabba brought it to Carribean Riddims (BET) back in the day.Without question b/c of Sean Paul future dancehall artists have the opportunity for more visibility and more money.Point Blank.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Traveling Music
I'm not a big reggue fan but this CD is a good one. This CD is better than the last one and has a lot of real upbeat dance tracks. The music is so good you seem to forget the explicit references to the female anatomy, which is hidden behing the accent. Being somewhat conservative I was surprised about some of the lyrics after I listened to it for the 50th time. But all in all, the overall message is that he likes having a good time and that's better than some of the other themes that are on the music scene these days. So overall it will make you feel "Eyeree" which is the point for making music in the first place. :-)

5-0 out of 5 stars BEST BUY EVER!
This Sean Paul album is HOTT! I would say it's the best CD buy I've ever made and now I'm in love with it. Some excellent songs include Temperature, We Be Burnin', Eye Deh A Mi Knee (My favorite song ever, it doesn't get enough attention), the trinity, head in the zone, and send it on. the single "give it up to me" i don't really like, and it shouldn't have been a single, but the rest of the album is GREAT. love to dance? this is the one you've been waiting for.

4-0 out of 5 stars I can do my laundry service any day!
Shakira was right to call this "Laundry Service". Hearing the opening number "Objection" always makes me feel like I just bought this CD yesterday. This my first and only Shakira CD with English and it is refreshing tohear it every time. She has her fair share of hits on here that I can surely hear over and over, like "Whenever, Wherever" and "Eyes Like Yours". This is a pretty unusual crossover CD, containing both English and her native Spanish. Clearly, she finds it easier in her own language, evident in songs like "Suerte" and "Que Me Quedes Tu". Her English is a bit choppy, but people won't buy music from a Spanish singer to bask in their English. Her voice makes it difficult to listen sometimes, as in "Underneath Your Clothes" and "The One", and I feel that "Fool" and "Poem to a Horse" are positioned well yet often overlooked as many Shakira fans are lured to more her scantily clad dance videos than rocking songs about how her "heart is sore". As for me, I hope that the clothes in this cycle never dry out!

1-0 out of 5 stars La Voz De ShakiraMe Hace Vomitar
Where do I start? This is awful. "Underneath Your Clothes" sounds too much like Alanis Morrisette's "Head Over Feet." "Whenever, Wherever" sounds much better in the Spanish-version "Suerte" and the video to that was alright. The rest of the songs sound like 1980's leftovers retrieved from the trash. Other than that, Shakira sounds absolutely dreadful. It's like hearing someone scratching their nails down a chalkboard. This chick doesn't know if she wants to emulate Jewel, Alanis Morrisette, or Britney Spears. But I guess she was like, "F*** it! I'll sound like all three!" and all you get is chaos. You can't even tell what kind of emotion Shakira is trying to express in a song because her voice is so messed up. "Laundry Service" sucks and "Oral Fixation" Vol. 1 and 2 are even worse. Shakira's easy on the eyes but she's killer on the ears. She needs to dye her back to its original black color and take some singing lessons. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A remarkable collaboration
Ten songs, ten perfect reasons to love this work. Each gentleman obviously had a fecund career of his own; yet, this effort represents a singular achievement in its own right. Too often when two legends come together they remain too much within their own realms of comfort (or ego) to make the effort genuinely worthwhile. Not so here. Both were willing to make concessions, forfeit a little of his own persona and adopt some of the other's in order to create a unique and extraordinary album. In fact, there are a couple instances it is difficult which one is singing, so seamless is their melding. Sinatra is at his sweetest and most plaintive. Jobim eases into American popular music effortlessly. The gorgeous orchestration by Claus Olgerman pulls together the production superbly. The result is a masterwork that sounds like neither a typical Sinatra album nor a typical Jobim album. The fifth track, "Meditation," summarizes these songs rather well: put on the CD, relax and lose yourself in this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sinatra at his best
This is great music sung by a great voice in his prime. It is soft, yet very sensual music. Sinatra and Jobim are quite a pairing!

I'd like to listen to Marisa Monte but I can't load it on my iPod - Does anyone still use CD players to listen to CDs? Does anyone know how to override the CDS 200 virus so that I can load it on an iPod?

4-0 out of 5 stars pleasant samba carioca
This CD is not similar to any of MM's previous albums because it consists solely of samba carioca. There are no emotionally charged or heart-wrenching MPB songs. But this is samba carioca and one shouldn't expect such an atmosphere. As is, it is a very well recorded samba album and, most importantly, is well-suited for dancing samba. Also, please note that MM has sung plenty of samba carioca throughout her career to good effect. For example, see Para Ver As Meninas from her album Memorias, Cronicas, e Declaracoes de Amor, a lovely samba that would fit in very well on this album.Recommended for those who enjoy samba carioca.

    Editorial Review

A bridge between bossa nova and 1960s pop, Sergio Mendes' music was easy listening, vaguely psychedelic pop, light jazz, and bossa nova all rolled into one. Mendes and Brasil '66 (which featured Mendes on keyboards and a revolving cast of two female vocalists, bass, guitar, drums and percussion) had a number of hits from the mid-'60s to the early-1970s that are included here. Getting his professional start playing and arranging for Antonio Carlos Jobim and Joao Gilberto, Mendes typically filled out his proper albums with updated versions of popular songs written by the Brazilian masters as well as some of his own tunes his tunes "Look Around" and "So Many Stars" are included. But this collection really surveys his interpretations of pop tunes of the day, some of which were never hits for Mendes. The small combo's light touch and rich vocal harmonies make for pleasant if kitschy covers of hits like the Beatles' "Fool On The Hill" and "Day Tripper," Burt Bacharach's "The Look Of Love," and others. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A welcome blast from the past.
Some of the cuts on "Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66--Greatest Hits" sound as fresh as they did 40 years ago. Others sound dated, though charmingly so. The Brazilian originals fare best--"Mais Que Nada" is guaranteed to get your hips and your day swinging, and "Like a Lover" is incredibly sexy, soothing, and mellow. The pop standards are more a matter of taste, though "The Look of Love" is still one of the best recordings ever of any Bacharach-David song. Occasionally an otherwise impeccable cut will betray its vintage; the lovely bossa nova tune "So Many Stars" is marred by a brief harpsichord solo, reminding us all why the harpsichord craze of the '60s did not survive the decade. One thing that mars this CD is the lack of any songwriter credits--I guess A&M assumes everyone knows who wrote these songs, but it would still be nice to have the credits! I'm glad Mendes is having renewed success with his recent collaboration with rap artists, but I'm of a generation that will be happy sticking with this CD.

4-0 out of 5 stars Lively beats and beautiful melodies
Glad I found this blast from the past. While I've tired of hearing Beatles songs I don't get tired of their versions. And "Like a Lover" is one of my favorite lovesongs.Wish there

    2-0 out of 5 stars A disapointment
If "Dreamer" was a masterpiece, "Around the city" is a disapointment. Ms. Elias should walk in the right side: just jazz. She shouldn't try a "mainstream" album, trying to be "funny" instead the usual talented piano artist as she is. Perhaps was a trick from the marketing people, "Eliane, goes to some accesible to the masses". But for Eliane's old friends this doesn't work. Go back to old ways, dear Eliane.

3-0 out of 5 stars She's so much better than this
I've followed Eliane from her early days with Steps Ahead, and I think she's fabulous. She carved out a whole class for herself by merging the passion, melody and irresistible harmonic forms of her native Brazilian music with the high energy and edge of New York City jazz. Her total mastery and deft compositional intuition in the resulting form are nothing short of astonishing. As a pianist, composer and arranger working this vein, she has no peers.
5-0 out of 5 stars Supurb!!
This has to be some of the best music I've heard in a long while. It wasn't my first impression, this cd is quite a departure from her previous music (originally jazz piano), and the first couple of tracks seem to jump from one style to another (each individually supurb), but, after a couple of listens, you lose all your preconceived notions of who Eliane Elias is supposed to be and just go with it - and what a great place she takes you to - great bossa, great rhythms .... supurb !! ... I had not bought one of Marc's albums in a while and the playlist looked good, so i bought it, and to my surprise ITS ONE OF MY FAV cds.
5-0 out of 5 stars Nice Collection of Marc Anthony Classics
Forget JLo, and the tabloid press, and just listen to the beauty of Marc Anthony's voice. He shines particularly on the pure hot salsa numbers. The ballads are all a little saccharine with all those violin strings, but the voice is still magic. It's a mystery why the songs in Spanish are always superior to the ones in English. Perhaps English just isn't a very romantic language. Anyhow, if you are looking for arrangements that have the big horn section power of Sinatra and the masculine voice to match, don't go buy Harry Connick Jr., give Marc Anthony a try.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love it

Her father may be the legendary Brazilian guitarist Joao Gilberto, but in 2000 daughter Bebel proved that she understands the bossa nova, too. There's a subtlety throughout this recording that makes Bebel's voice entrancing, as she re-creates the sensual essence of bossa nova before running with it into electronic territory toward the album's end. 5-0 out of 5 stars Bask in Brazilian music
When this album first came out in 1999,I first saw it at Starbucks coffee shops. I dismissed it as snooze-inducing easy listening, perfect for the background of sipping an overpriced latte.
5-0 out of 5 stars Very good music
Best album in my collection.Good job Bebel I'm looking forward to your next album.

5-0 out of 5 stars I Love It
I know little about Brazilian music, Bossa Nova or Latin music in general, but I really like this. This is the most beautiful non English speaking music I have ever heard. The perfect intro to contemporary Brazillian tunes. Bebel is relaxed jazz stuff with upbeat sounds, different from the everyday music you normally hear. I just finished reading a few of the negative reviews and I just don't understand them. This CD is one of the few that I own where all the songs are really great. This album brings together so many different musical styles, but it doesn't feel contrived or over produced. The elements and songs flow so smoothly, effortlessly. "August Day Song" is a sexy, song with deep Afro-Cuban beats and sounds like a hot summers day. My favorite CD at the moment.
