5-0 out of 5 stars Great Cuban Music
This is a great example of Cuban music. There are 3 cuts on the album that have great 'feeling' and make you 'dream' of dancing with a lovely latin girl. If you happen to be dancing with a lovely latin girl, then you are all the luckier. Cuts 2, 6 and 9 are very rhythmic, and are great for 'close' dancing. Cut 9, is known in the English speaking world as "Green Eyes". I don't know the Spanish lyrics for cuts 2 and 6, but I hope they are very seductive.

5-0 out of 5 stars wonderful
I wasn't a Ry Cooder fan but I've discovered respect for him after these associations. Previous posters seem to think that Ry Cooder was the only guitarist, which would be a surprise to Manuel Galban. Ibrahim's voice is as amazing as his story. BVSC the film is basically a film of the sessions for this album. I think Ry deserves 'props' for bringing this music to a much wider audience than was expected. I'm sure people will read that as a 'whiter' audience as well. Lighten up, shake off the ghost and dance.
4-0 out of 5 stars Ry Cooder's awful

3-0 out of 5 stars Great music...beautiful singer with a so-so voice
Unfortunately, Arielle Dombasle doesn't quite have the voice to pull this off. I like her selection of songs, and her accompaniment is exquisite. She even does a good job some of the time. It's those other times, when she's flat, that really detract from your listening pleasure. The good moments outnumber the bad, or I would pan her altogether.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best music of It's Kind
My wife introduced me to the bolero music of the early years and then introduced me to Luis Miguels Romances cd a few years ago. This CD, his complete collection of his Romances is an unbelievable find.To think, the once child singer at the age of 20 could belt out music like this.He did this recording between the age of 20-25 and the music sounds soulfully mature and rich.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Compilation
Luis Miguel is one of the greatest Latin American singers of all time. His smooth boleros are so masterfully done that even if you don't understand the language you will definitely understand his talent.

There’s no doubt that singer Lila Downs' profile is on the rise after her appearance in the film Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Endless talent, humor(!), peerless voice
It does not happen very often that one can hear a forty year old classic in a new cover version, and it is as if you hear that song all new and all over again. Especially, I had always thought that Chavela Vargas' version of Paloma Negra would remain the "gold standard", but when I listened to Lila Down's version here, ohh boy was I wrong, and ohh boy was I blown away! She plays with her talent, she jiggles with her incredible musical possibilities. Where other artists put a lot of effort into a single interpretation, where you see they work hard, Lila Downs seems just like a child that opens a big box of candies and asks: "What type of magic do I feel like doing next?"
5-0 out of 5 stars A Superb Sound, Filled With Passion And Soul!
I first heard Lila Downs' sultry, smokey voice in the film "Frida." The movie's entire soundtrack is extraordinary, and I still listen to the CD frequently. Fortunately Ms. Downs has come out with four albums since then, because I love the passion and soul she puts into her music. "Una Sangre" is her latest offering. And it is an eclectic, outstanding mix, based on her multicultural artistic vision!
5-0 out of 5 stars Another great offering
On this Lila Downs fourth or fifth CD if you count the rerelease (with additional tracks)of "Sandunga" finds her even deeperand more comfortable in her binational soul. Revealing her bicultural identity by the light of the moon ,muchlike a leopard in a starless night jungle, her vocals pounce on your soul, invadingand capturing your innermost feelings. There isa certain maturity to her latest work that reveals an accomplished artist, one who has travelled the globe and still comes back to her roots. There are no less than five traditional songs that have been given the Lila Downs treatment to retain their folkloric roots but with an edge, the Lila Downs edge. Even the songs that are originals have that feeling of traditional folkloric music because offine productionand musicianship. Although Lila is the star, credit must be given to the tight band that hails from different lands and whose flags make themlike a U.N. delegation. Of course, it goes without mentioning that Lila's "amorcito" Paul Cohen does a wonderful job arranging and producing the various melodies for a tight cohesive sound. If you are new to Lila you may feel the disc lacks continuity but this is who Lila is. She is a multitalented artist whose voice is like a contortionist, bending ,dippingand weaving between genres in her unimitable style. To say she is unique is an understatement. Whether she sings in husky tones, soft whispers, lingering, escalating ,suddenly diving operatic high notes or any style Lila chooses , she is fantastic. Listening to her gives me chills today just like the first time I heard her back in 1999 . The haunting melodies stay with you long after the disc stops playing. I've been listening to this disc for about a year now and never seem to get tired of it. I only put it away , offmy multi-disc rotation to give others a chance but I always come back to her. She can sing avariety of styles, many are featured hereand they are allreally good. Obviously she could do just a jazz album, as is evidenton her English version of "One Blood" where she sounds like like a sultry, throaty , Latina, Sade. Her talent is boundless. She has been compared to Chavela Vargas but really there is no comparison, there is Lila and then there is Lila. It is her style, her persona, her music that creates the magic. Some of the more traditional songs that have received the Lila treatment are the mystical "Cielo Rojo,""La Cucaracha," La Bamba," and"Paloma Negra" come to new life like antiques recently brought out of the cabinet to be proudly displayed at the table. Although I like very much the traditonal songs featured on this disc I am also drawn to "Dignificada" which has a slight reggae back beat, "Malinche" which explores the Mexican godmother cursed by some but that belongs to all of us who have Mexican heritage, the bluesy , rootsysung in English "Mother Jones," the call tomusical arms Paul Cohen sax introduction onthe Arabic sounding "Brown Paper People" with it's hip-hop inflected vocals adding further worldly textures and both Spanish and English versions of "One Blood/ Una Sangre" solidify the bilingual/binational nature of this disc. Lila is like a fine glass of wine or aged anejo Tequila that resonates with the various nuances and influences of the earth and climate, creating an experience to be savored and to reflect upon. She is not a person who fits into the flavor of the day pop- variety-disposible-icons that flood the music market today. This is a true artist who reflects what many people only feel and cannot express. This is another ina succesive line of great Lila Downs albums to be experienced. As others have stated, check her out live too. I've seen her three times and her shows are incredible. You need this CD in your collection, your soul will never be the same. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Sublime Hispanic Experience
If you haven't heard Mercedes Sosa's song, there are some tracks on this compile that will convert you to fandom. This Argentinian woman, whose mixed descenet seems to have supplied her with all the good singing genes, was born in 1935.She has the most marvellous voice, fresh as the dawn and as crystal clear.Particularly moving is 'Gracias a la Vida' (more famously sung by Joan Baez, but Sosa's version is divine).I love this CD and it can lift me out of the doldrums in a wink.If you buy this, maybe also get the 2001 CD of 'Missa Criolla' as the Sosa version is fabulous. Her voice is mellow, but timeless, young-sounding and pure without affectation.

4-0 out of 5 stars Thought provoking folklore
I bought this CD for a single track. A track I remember my late father playing when I was kid. I was extremely pleased to find the entire album a worthwhile listening experience. It's folklore with a message at it's best. It's thought provoking, yet also soothing and relaxing.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for romantics - a perennial classic!
I used to be a romatic guy when I was very young, but then I switched to a more upbeat type of music when I got older (age crisis?) Well, this CD really brought back the old romantic guy I was. If you claim being a romantic one, then this must be in your collection. I love to play it and dance with my wife, even in front of our boys, so they know what true romance is. Perfect for baby-making nights, it will relax you and get all the right senses ready. Yeah!!

5-0 out of 5 stars I can't speak spanish but heart does the translation.
Oh how his voice gives me emotional goose bumps.I cannot speak or understand spanish, but my heart takes care of this short coming. The voice is warm, romantic, soothing to my soul with orchestration to die for.To my English speaking friends go ahead and get this classic, your heart will thank you.

What music, what an artist! My husband and I were at the Radisson in Miami, sitting at the bar and waiting for an open table for dinner.I heard this "music" coming from the speakers, it gave me goosebumps!I asked the bartender who it was singing and he said Luis Miguel.Well, I was hooked from then on.It's been 5 yrs. since that night and I've got I believe just about every CD he's made.I find myself singing along to all the songs, learning & speaking a little Spanish too!The songs he sings in Spanish sound so much more romantic than when you hear them in English, at least I think so. The bartender saw how much I loved the CD, he played it again just for me! I think Luis is wonderul and I plan to see him in concert if he ever comes my way.My husband even likes his songs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Luis Miguel In The Skin
This is an absolutely wonderful CD.This has to be his best yet.I hope that he sticks to this genre. The older he gets the better he gets.I went to his concert, Mexico en la Piel Tour, last fall. For the record, this man showed so much emotion and compassion in his music that it gave me goosebumps. It was a sold-out concert.AMAZING!!!I was sitting at the very top of the stadium and I brought my binoculars...you could see every glistening white tooth of his.Yes, he apparently got his gap closed.I miss the gap.Anyways, he showed so much enthusiasm and smiled for the entire 2-hour show. His voice is beautiful and so natural. Please people, don't compare him to other artists. He's one of a kind.Luis Miguel and the mariachi band that performed that night were flawless.I hope he comes back to Austin with another outstanding album. It's no wonder he got a grammy for this piece.Luis, you rocked the house that night.Come back, we want more. ... 1. How About Me
5-0 out of 5 stars Another re-release that needed to be released!
My Father bought the "SOFTLY AS I LEAVE YOU" & "GREATEST HITS" albums on vinyl a long time ago back in the 60's and it somehow managed to survive in good shape. Later, I myself bought the "DON'T GO TO STRANGERS" album from a used vinyl store and was fairly happy with how these albums sounded on my Linn Turntable. WOW! When I heard these GL Music remasters on my Linn CD12, I could not believe the difference! (And this from a guy who usually finds the vinyl version sounds better.) An absolute must have, for not only Eydie Gorme fans, but ESPECIALLY all the people who think "WHAT'S NEW" is an album by Linda Ronstadt. The smooth soothing relaxing sound of these Eydie Gorme versions will make you forget about ever listening to the Linda Ronstadt versions again. Both of these albums are again one of MY ALL TIME FAVORITES in my collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars SPECTACULAR SINGER, WONDERFUL SONGS
This 'two for one' CD is a demonstration of the magnificent voice and stylistic ability of one of our great female popular singers. Grammy winner Eydie Gorme is quite simply one of THE BEST singers of our time. Possessing a voice that can go from an out-of-tempo whisper to solid upper register notes surfing above the crest of a huge orchestra reaching it's crescendo, Ms Gorme can literally and delightfully make your hair stand on end. Half of the Steve Laurence-Eydie Gorme marriage and singing team, both have individual careers when they decide to have some solo fun. Indeed Ms Gorme has also produced a number of hit spanish language recordings, like Nat Cole. And she specializes in 'show stoppers', belting out one after another with style and feeling.

4-0 out of 5 stars OTRA BUENA COMPILACION, PERO INCOMPLETA....
Pero entre 1963 y 1965 Sandro todava no compona y grababa "covers" de temas famosos de otros artistas (el caso de "Meloda Desencadenada" o "Unchain Melody"); por ejemplo, de temas de Los Beatles podemos encontrar grabadas por Sandro (castellanizadas por supuesto) a "A hard day's night", "We can work it out", "I'll get you", "Can't buy me love", "A world without love", "From a Window" y muchas otras.

5-0 out of 5 stars BENY MORE- "LO MEJOR DE LO MEJOR"
BMG/RCA ARIOLA DE MEXICO has put together a great compilation of Beny More's Mexican tour (1945-1952) and also included some of his RCA Havana recorded sessions with his own band and that of Ernesto Duarte. It is great that "occasionally shelved" hit songs like "Las Posadas", "La Maricutana" and "Loca Pasion, by Beny with Mariano Merceron Orch. were included in this compilation. Although more of these rare sessions with Merceron should've been included, this is a "handy to have" compilation, 40 songs especially for those who are just getting to know "El Barbaro del Ritmo", Beny More and above all, the price is right! ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Cotton Candy from Gorme
Outstanding enunciation, beautiful voice, just the right vibrato, engaging dynamics, some good songs with the one out-of-place exception of "You Need Hands" (huh?). What Matt Monro does with the male voice, Eydie accomplishes on the female side: practically definitive interpretations. "I'll Take Romance" gives off whiffs of Keely Smith and June Christy while remaining Eydie--including that soaring screech near the end. This collection will send me back to other early Eydie.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best
Eydie Gorme never received her due in the entertainment world. A truly magficent voice--and so much style. And the style transferred to her private life, too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Enjoy REAL Music! Enjoy REAL Talent! Enjoy REAL Singing!
What can I say? This is one of the rare pieces of art and real music that I turn to, when I feel like enjoying some real music. Beautiful music, wonderful voice, wonderful interpreter. PURE ENJOYMENT. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A real diva in the making.
A great CD with a more mature and elegant Lucero. Her first single LA UNICA QUE TE ENTIENDE, is a welcome change compared to her early 90's pop. Lucero has grown up and presented us with a carefully crafted gem. A wonderful and beautiful CD that will grow on you. Listen to it a few times and enjoy the evolution of this very talented singer.

5-0 out of 5 stars I LOVEIT!!!!!
Lucero is one of the best singers in whole world and this CD shows that. The songs are so beautiful that you just want to keep listening to them. I highly recommend this CD for those of you who want to enjoy GREAT music from a talented artist. Thank you Lucero for this excellent CD!!!!
2-0 out of 5 stars so bad,
This cd is like a bad "acustic" with all her old hits.someone told in other review that Paulina Rubio doesn"t have the 1/4 the voice that Lucero has, but the difference is, Paulina Rubio takes the risk to record different music .On the other hand.Lucero prefered to record her old songs, what a drag!!!!! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Has eligido bien, porque sabes que soy, soy Oro de Ley!!!!!!
No me crees?

5-0 out of 5 stars Que puedo decir acerca de este album ?

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Great Review
Just wanted to add to the already wonderful reviews.Like anotherreviewer, I don't speak any Spanish (although my basic Italian gives me aslight clue as to the gist of the songs) - but this is great music. It isbeautifully orchestrated, soothing; Luis Miguel has a great voice.Thesongs are so singable that I am continuously trying to sing alongphonetically.I never get tired of this CD, I can play it over and over. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Pretty nostalgia from the most beautiful girl you'll ever see
I have listened to this charming album around four times now and I found it very enjoyable and stylish. Arielle Dombasle has a very light and fragile voice, in another life, she'd be a soprano. Her music is a mix of Jazz standards, nostalgia and movie musical music from the thirties and forties.
5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Modern Nostalgia.
This cd is not for everyone, but you will find it absolutely enjoyable if you are more than passively into the artistic world and if you are multicultural.Guilty on both counts, I love this album even more than I do Arielle's previous crossover opera outing, Liberta.
5-0 out of 5 stars Beautful
I discovered this cd quite by chance and I'm really happy to have done so.Arielle has a very traditional (stereotypical) high pitched `vibrato', French voice, and sounds as though this was recorded in the 30's, because of the style of vocal.

5-0 out of 5 stars so smooth and romantic
This great collection of ballads is the second in the "Romance" series, and is performed impeccably by Luis Miguel, who many consider to be the # 1 singer in Latin music today.5-0 out of 5 stars A Latin masterpiece
"Segundo Romance," the CD by Luis Miguel, is an excellent collection of Latin music. All the songs have Spanish lyrics. These songs are mellow, romantic ballads with a lush, classy orchestral backing. Luis Miguel performs each selection with a gentle, but smoldering, passion.5-0 out of 5 stars BEING ROMANTIC IS WHEN LOVE SPARKLES
LUIS MIGUEL IS A KNOWN ROMANTIC SINGER. HIS MUSIC AND PERSONALITY WILL CARRY HIM TOBETTER AND GOOD CARRER. I LOVE HIS MUSIC. I THANK GOD FOR SUCH A PERSON LIKE HIM. AS FAR AS ME IM A VERY ROMANTIC PERSON MYSELF. IMGLAD I HAVE ALL HIS ALBUMS AND WONDERFUL MUSIC. I ALWAYS PLAY HIS MUSICWHEN IT COMES DOWN TO BEING ROMANTIC WITH THAT SOMEONE SPECIAL. I ALSOWOULD LIKE TO TRY AND LEARN NEW THINGS AS FAR AS ROMANCE GOES. LUIS MIGUELAND HIS MUSIC WILL LIVE ON AND CHERISH EACH AND EVERY ONE HEARTS FOR THOSEWHO KNOW HIM AND LISTEN TO HIS MUSIC.... ...
