Her best CD!
George Benson once said "people are going to remember you/your show, NOT for how much you impressed them, but for how Good you made them feel". I'm a strong believer of that theory. And this CD, makes a PERFECT example.
Classy interpretation of standards...
Diana Krall's music can be a real hit-or-miss thing with me - her voice is enjoyable but not always her biggest strength. Yet with the right arrangement framing her vocals her music can be irresistible. With the right arrangement, what sells Krall's vocals is her superb sense of rhythm and timing. In that sense she's similar to Fred Astaire - he had a very thin, reedy quality to his voice but because he was the consummate dancer, rhythm simply oozed from every fiber of his being. More than his film recordings, this quality is evident in his jazz recordings with Oscar Peterson from the fifties. In this tradition, From This Moment On is one of Krall's strongest and most enjoyable efforts. She receives superb musical backing from the Clayton/Hamilton Jazz Orchestra -- the arrangements hum with energy, especially the swing numbers, which are fantastic. "From This Moment On" has an incredible, manic rhythm (and features some swinging brass) to it that reminded me of recordings of the song's original bow on Broadway in Kiss Me, Kate. Krall's interpretation of "Come Dance With Me" rivals Frank Sinatra's (from the Capitol Records album of the same name) for energy and exuberance. On the slower side of things, Krall gives a touching interpretation of the Rodgers-Hart classic "Little Girl Blue." That song and "Willow Weep for Me" provides a nice counterpoint to the album's generally upbeat, swing-filled mood. The album is available from Target with one bonus track -- "My Shining Hour." This is really a very enjoyable album -- one gets the sense that Krall was incredibly relaxed and comfortable when making this record, freeing her to really have fun and breathe fresh life into these classic songs.

Classy execution.
Diana Krall's big strengths when she first emerged were a musicality about lyrics that savoured the weight of every syllable, an instrumentalist's timing and ideas (though her piano-playing isn't up to her singing, it's been a crucial complement to it) and a delicate intimacy that made every member of an audience feel they were getting her personal attention.

Smokey-voiced chanteuse Madeleine Peyroux's third CD is a lovely collection of after-hours ruminations and should confirm her rise to fame. Credit producer Larry Klein for doing a bang-up job with the album's sound: the elegant, pared-down arrangements are all brushed drums, acoustic guitars, and cool organ licks. But of course it's Peyroux's voice that brings it all home--preferably one where the shades are drawn, embers are smoldering in the fireplace, and the white wine is kept dry. Didn'thave to wait 8 years, Yew!!!
What a nice way to start a CD with "I'm All Right"should have been the title track, maybe it says a lot about Madeliene at this stage in her career, I 'm assuming since it didn't take her another 8 years to follow up her last CD.And we should all be thankful for that.And she did look very all right at 4th & B, very relax, playful and looking a little plump compared to last year at the GreekTheatre.Sorry to digress (she looked beautiful and sounded beautiful by the way).The four piece of music that she co wrote have the most insightful and intelligently written lyrics sung with ease and depth.Then ofcourse there'sMadeliene's interpretation of well known and well love classics, from "Smile"toTom Waite's "the heart of Saturday night."She is never flippant or never takes these songs for granted rather she sings it well and breathes a new prespective into these songs.I am so happy that she has produced a CD this year and I know she makes a lot of other people glad, happy and enthusiastic about listening to music judging by Saturday's concert.

Half the Perfect CD
Let me start out by saying that I'm a big fan. Careless Love was one of the finest albums to be released in quite some time, and one of the most memorable. I was truly impressed, giving as evidence the fact that I probably listened to it twenty times in the first week of owning it.I soon sought out Dreamland and enjoyed it as well, though some of the arrangements were a little too creative and ambitious.Which brings me to Half the Perfect World. I totally agree with Olukayode Balogun's assessment - perfectly put.I'll only add that one gets the sense that Ms. Peyroux's comfort level with the material this time around was anything but. There are times when she shines, as on the wonderfully crafted Once in A While, but overall, she sounds unsure of herself and what she's trying to achieve. Let's hope Ms. Peyroux finds her center again on the next effort and returns to what she does best.Kudos, however, to the flawless arrangements and production of Mr. Kein and company.

Bravo - I wish I were there.
I have been a fan of Keith Jarrett for a long time.I was even lucky enough to hear one of his live concerts in Milwaukee many years ago.Most people don't understand his groaning while he plays.They don't understand how he is in another place and plane when he performs his incredible improvisations.They don't understand or appreciate music that has feeling and soul.Being a musician myself, I can understand this - however, I have never achieved a level of technical ability that Keith Jarrett has.I can only dream of achieving something close in my lifeteime.Keith Jarrett is an inspiration to me and I wish there were more music in the world like his.
Great concert...flawed presentation
I wholeheartedly agree with Christopher Vickery that the audience applause at the end of the tracks is excessive and annoying. I followed his advice and used Audacity to edit out that applause. Now I can get back to enjoying this beautiful performance.

Michael Bublé's assured debut and the tireless year of globe-trotting touring he spent promoting it elevated the 20-something Vancouver native into the first rank of pop crooner revivalists. His sophomore studio follow-up largely turns on the same formula that helped make his considerable vocal prowess so attractive to mainstream audiences, mixing the nigh flawless, if expected Sinatra-channeling ("I've Got You Under My Skin") with more playful and inviting renditions of pop standards like the Gershwin's "A Foggy Day in London Town," "Feeling Good," "Try A Little Tenderness" and Cole Porter's "I've Got You Under My Skin." A Rush
I rememeber the first time that I listened to this CD.I was in my car about a year ago waiting for an appointment.I would hear a new song, and I would scream with the excitement of a teenage fangirl.I love the arrangements of old standards. I love the new songs. I love the sound of the band, and most of all I love the sensuous sound of Michale Buble's voice. 10 out of 10!

Nelly, you only had to learn ONE WORD IN SPANISH.....
We loved the CD, but were disappointed when Nelly sang CUANDO CUANDO CUANDO. She only had to learn one word in Spanish, and instead of saying CUANDO (translation: when), she sang CUANTO (translation: how much), prostituting the song.
Another Great one
After thoroughly enjoying the DVD/CD release, "Caught in the Act," I also gave this CD a listen to by Buble, the second album of his that I have listened to. I have to give it 5 stars because I am very much impressed with and enamoured by Buble's emergence on the scene. He is a very capable vocalist and has given me a new perspective on what a jazz vocalist should sound like.

Very Nice Album
Boney James has once again released a superior album. James always manages to compose a fine album, and Shine is no different. This album combines upbeat and relaxing music along with exceptional sound quality and nice ballads. I would recommend Shine to any smooth jazz fan or to someone who enjoys relaxing music. Shine is a must have.

Comes up with the goods
once again. Boney James rules. Forget about classifying the music he plays. He does what he does, and he does it well. I read a few reviews, which I only use as guides, as well you should, and then I went ahead and parted with my hard earned cash. Dance Me To The End Of Love
I really like this album and Madeleine's song selection is superb with the exception of Dance Me To The End Of Love. This song written by Leonard Cohen really creeps me out. Most people think it's a love song between a man and a woman. Leonard Cohen explained the song in an interview:

Madeleine Peyroux has a great voice and terrific taste in songs to cover, and the band backing her up here hits all the right mellow, jazzy notes.If she keeps up the effort, she's bound to produce some classic recordings.But she isn't quite there yet.There's nothing really wrong with these twelve songs - certainly nothing jumps out as poorly done.The problem is more that nothing really jumps out, period.Hearing their songs so tastefully copied makes me want to listen to Bessie Smith, Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen and Hank Williams, but Peyroux doesn't make much of a case as to why we should listen to her versions instead of the originals.Not bad at all, but only not bad.

the Cover Art Says It: Two Flat Shades of Blue
I've purchased and listened to ALL of the previous recordings by both the principals of this recording. I've never found ANY of them irritating and annoying. But this recording I can't listen to more than 3 tracks. I may regret this review, and it may not be helpful to you, but all I hear is busy, busy, busy playing in a tiny, narrow range of texture, grooves, and expression. Sometimes with a recording, I instantly feel "what a great session". And sometimes I instantly feel, "what a misguided session". I may try to listen to it in the car or some different setting, I mean, I SHOULD be able to hear something here ...

Eminently listenable
I note that the few critical reviews so far have said the music was not 'memorable' or blah...sorry guys, you just don't appreciate great music...they would have said the same for Mozart or whoever.
Great names do not constitute a great album
Great names do not constitute a great album. This is almost always the case when two great musicians are trying to create music while ego problems, lack of the same background and lack of time brings a somewhat shallow music which seems "good" and "enjoyable" but at the end of the day, this CD (as much as many others which brought two talents together) will lay in the back of your private catalogue never to be heard again. This album is no different and it has listening time of about two weeks from now before it will be forgotten. Yes, this CD has its good minutes, the playing is really out of this world but this is really the only good thing that one can say about it. The ones who like Methney style, will continue purchasing all his never ending alike CD (which, for me, seem the same) while Mehldau' fans will wait for a new good art of trio music without the necessity of reading who much these two great musicians admire each other as customary writen in the nice booklet annexed to these kind of CD'. ... It is not just the timbre of Norah Jones's voice that is mature beyond her 22 years. Her assured phrasing and precise time are more often found in older singers as well. She is instantly recognizable, blending shades of Billie Holiday and Nina Simone without sounding like anyone but herself. Any way you slice it, she is a singer to be reckoned with. Her readings of the Hank Williams classic "Cold Cold Heart" and Hoagy Carmichael's "The Nearness of You" alone are worth the price of the CD. Jones's own material, while not bad, pales a bit next to such masterpieces. They might have fared better had she and producer Arif Mardin opted for some livelier arrangements, taking better advantage of brilliant sidemen such as Bill Frisell, Kevin Breit, and Brian Blade; or if the tunes had simply been given less laconic performances. Jones has all the tools; what will come with experience and some careful listening to artists like J.J. Cale and Shirley Horn is the knack of remaining low-key without sounding sleepy--sometimes less is not, in fact, more. Read more

He does it again!
Tommy never ceases to amaze!His originality and emotions shine through.Lizzie and Tommy sound good on Pam Rose's "The Wall".Keep it coming!

Consistent exellence!
You can't truly appreciate what Tommy Emmanuel can do on the guitar without seeing him in concert. Still, "The Mystery," the third in Tommy Emmanuel's series of mostly solo acoustic work is intensely satisfying and great listening, whatever your level of exposure to "TE". While many finger-style guitarists are able to generate a lot of notes with their solo playing, none compare with TE in the way he serves up song after song of really, really good music. These songs are great melodies played flawlessly (and apparently effortlessly) by a master of his art.

I think we own every DC ever made by Tommy, even the obscure stuff (anyone remember "The Day the Fingerpickers Took Over the World" with Chet Atkins?).You will never go wrong with a Tommy Emmuel CD.His music, while following a familiar theme of folksy/country style with the occasional rock-ish tune thrown in, is ever-new while still feeling comfortable.Kind of like wearing your favorite slippers. Tommy is known as an instrumentalist, so the odd real song (as opposed to a piece, which is what you call an instrumental item)is an interesting surprise on any of his CDs.The song "Walls" is one of those nice surprises.This CD sounds more introspective than many of his others -- it reminds me of the his earlier music, which was almost purely guitar. There are very few, if any pieces on this CD that have more than just Tommy and his guitar playing.I can tell even now that this will get a lot of play in my house. Pop's rush to raid the cradle continues with this promising debut by 25-year-old Canadian singer Michael Bublé. And while the young vocal star's good looks are smart enough for a boy band, his muse seems to have sprung from a more sassy and compelling musical era. Mentored by Paul Anka (whose '50s hit "Put Your Head on My Shoulder" is covered in dreamy, cabaret fashion here), Bublé sings in the orbits of Darin and Sinatra, covering swing epoch gems ("Come Fly with Me," "The Way You Look Tonight," "That's All") and rock era standards (Van Morrison's "Moondance," "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart" by the Brothers Gibb, Queen's "Crazy Little Ting Called Love") with equal aplomb. David Foster's production is typically slick and played to the back row of the bleachers, but it's informed by smart contexts provided by such arrangers as Johnny Mandel, Randy Waldman, and Mike Melvoin. Just Love This Guy
While we've heard them time and time again - Buble takes the classic standards and adds his own twist. No, maybe there is nothing terribly new going on - but he didn't mutilate the music either.Relaxing - Just lovely.

Rare to find - an entire CD of excellent music!
Michael Buble is simply incredible, and although I do own all of his CDs it's this one that I come back to time and time again.This is the perfect CD to play while sipping a glass of wine or enjoying dinner with friends.It's slow and sensual at times and then lively and fun.I simply cannot say enough good about this artist or this CD.

'Standards Lite'
While certainly a better presentation than the Rod Stewarts and Michael Boltons of the world and their flaccid stabs at music way different from a rocker's sensibilities, Buble is a standards singer for those who think Kenny G is a jazz musician and John Tesh is a pianist.

Some impressive highpoints
This is the belated follow-up the 1998 MMW collaboration with John Scofield, A Go-Go, and the music here is of a more collaborative nature rather than featured soloist and backing band. With a few exceptions, the music mines the same funky fusion territory with a few covers and on the two best cuts, the looming influence of John Scofield's one time boss, Miles Davis. I found that the music varied in quality, but preferred the uptempoed music, which focused the band and gave direction to their obvious talent. "Little Walter Rides Again" has a funky feel with some hip drumming and swirling organ... but if it's about Little Walter Jacobs, the bluesman, why no harmonica? "Miles Beyond" name checks Davis directly with a very cool track channeling the "dark funk" of his '73-'75 pre-retirement years. This is the best track on the disc - focused, potent and full of energy. "In Case the World Changes It's Mind" drops down into a more pedestrian funk groove. The problem with some of the more lumbering funk tunes is that they become faceless with nothing to distinguish them from other jams. "Tequila and Chocolate" takes something of a "Touch of Evil" (great Wells film) bordertown vibe. The music gets kind of swanky like Sex Mob's Sexotica experiment with Esquivel like lounge music. Scofield gets a nice solo that has a bit of a sharp Grant Green tinge to it.
Pretty good.
The only stuff that I ever really got into for either of these artists (MMW & Scofield) was the great album "A Go Go" (hereafter reffered to as AGG) so I'm certainly no expert on either artists' full catalog of work.
Great Continuation
Man is this a good album, and a great sequel to A GO Go.The previous album culminated in one of my favorite mmw works as well as my favorite scofield work and Out louder is certainly on par and is one of my favorite new fusion efforts.I expect great things from this quartet in the future, for jazz's sake hope that they do stay together.Can't wait to go see them in november. ... Greatest Billie Holiday Impersonation Ever!
Do you love ripoff artists such as Lenny Kravitz and Norah Jones? Does true originality disturb you and drive you to seek cover in the soft womb of corporate created fluff marketed as the real deal? Then you're in for a treat with this album! Not even Rich Little could do Billie better. Texture of voice AND delivery expertly stolen without a qualm, but without any of the icky sincerity and authentic pain of the original. Enjoy!

Absolutely Wonderful!
I first heard Madeleine Peyroux playing through the speakers in a Starbucks on a trip to Seattle. Her voice was magical and I just had to ask who it was. I love Billie Holiday and her style of singing is very similar.This cd is a wonderful collection of songs from Patsy Cline's "Walkin' after midnight" to Edith Piaf's "La vie en rose", you'll love every song.Her other cd "Careless Love" is also a wonderful collection.You can't go wrong with this cd, it's simply lovely.

Trick Or Treat
This is a great and smart collection. Just look at the selection of songs you get, Monster Mash, Ghostbusters, Purple People Eater, The Addams family theme, Twilight Zone and my new favorite The Martian Hop. I never heard the Martian Hop before even though it's from the early 1960s, pretty catchy song. It's a great cd and unlike other compilations that have movie themes this one has the actual real legit songs. That's the real Monster Mash song by Bobby Picket, that's the real beginning to the Addams Family show and that's the real RayParker Jr. singing Ghostbusters. It would be nice if they had more songs but you'll still be glad you bought this cd when you have company over for a party come October or Halloween Night.

Great Music Sung by the People that Made them Great!
A CD of fun, & silly Halloween music that you can enjoy because it's the recordings of the original singers, not the original singers brother's cousin's hairdresser's aunt.If you like Dr Demento type music, then you'll love this! My kids enjoy it as well.The 2 best songs are of course, Monster Mash and Martian Hop.Give it a try!

This is the one jazz record owned by people who don't listen to jazz, and with good reason. The band itself is extraordinary (proof of Miles Davis's masterful casting skills, if not of God's existence), listing John Coltrane and Julian "Cannonball" Adderley on saxophones, Bill Evans (or, on "Freddie Freeloader," Wynton Kelly) on piano, and the crack rhythm unit of Paul Chambers on bass and Jimmy Cobb on drums. Coltrane's astringency on tenor is counterpoised to Adderley's funky self on alto, with Davis moderating between them as Bill Evans conjures up a still lake of sound on which they walk. Meanwhile, the rhythm partnership of Cobb and Chambers is prepared to click off time until eternity. It was the key recording of what became modal jazz, a music free of the fixed harmonies and forms of pop songs. In Davis's men's hands it was a weightless music, but one that refused to fade into the background. In retrospect every note seems perfect, and each piece moves inexorably towards its destiny. Listen to Coltrane on this album
I've never heard him solo more beautifully, more hauntingly that he does on this album.There are very few works of art that can bring me to tears but his solos on Blue in Green and Flamenco Sketches are among the most emotional than I've ever heard.

Irresistible !
Fourplay are the reigning champions of urbane sophistication, bringing a sublime sense of form and interplay to the contemporary jazz genre.
Waste of money
I was very eager to buy this CD. I have the CD Elixir and I love it. I saw and heard fourplay in Atlanta and they were awesome. However, this CD has too much computerized music. Too many sythensized voices. Very predictable. In my estimation, a bunch of tracks to play on smooth jazz radio stations or in an elevator as mindless filler. I didn't care for this one at all.

Almost... but not quite
This is a welcome return to form by the smooth jazz quartet. I found the last two albums rather iffy to say the least. Heartfelt was saved, for me, by a mere three songs: "Tally Ho!", "Goin' Back Home" and "Making Up". The only song I really liked on Journey was "Rozil".

Quepaso, Qhe paso Yolanda?
If you ever buy an album just because of one song, you have got to check out Yolanda which is track 5 on this album, which is just amazing.I cannot possibly do it justice by attempting to describe it, except that it just makes me feel incredibly good.I would recomment this album for this reason alone, although I have to say it is an enjoyable easy to listen to album, with excellent instrumentation vocals, and excellent atmosphere.
