Editorial Review

Venezuela's resident musical maniacs and former Latin Grammy nominees are back with covers of seventeen tunes they knew and loved during their teen years, a few of which, such as "Miss Venezuela," complete with samples of a simpering beauty queen, actually sound strangely familiar. Their rampant satirical stance and penchant for studio wizardry still firmly in place, they wallow in neo-nostalgia, running amok in Caracas Oldieville, abetted by producer DJ Dimitri of Paris and their own polymorphous tendencies. Nods to Isaac Hayes, Nigerian superstar Fela Kuti, sixties bossa nova as sanitized via the American west coast, P-Funk, Santana, and even The Fifth Dimension do a crazed buck-and-wing around hip-hop, lounge and latter-day dance club machinations. The contexts shift so rapidly that if the listener weren't so busy boogying, vertigo might well set in. By the third track, the flagrantly over-ripe, increasingly bizarre sets of cross-pollinations begin to seem almost normal, as a kind of sonic Stockholm Syndrome sets in. Going with the flow becomes not only a matter of self-preservation, but a hilarious, booty-shaking journey into the group's seductive, endlessly inventive brand of lunatic genius. --Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars pales compared to the last 3 albums
Let's be candid, this album is not as well-produced or infectious as the prior 3 Los Amigos Invisibles albums.I love these guys to death, I'm not trying to be negative. But I find myself having no urge to re-listen to "Superpop Venezuela", whereas I always loved to revisit the Luaka Bop releases.Los Amigos Invisibles are an incredible live act, so perhaps this new material is better in concert.
5-0 out of 5 stars De lo mejor del 2006: Trae grandes recuerdos!
5-0 out of 5 stars Directly from Venezuela this time!
I have to admit that this is an ambitious project from LAI and a very creative one as well. They're taking their favorites from Venezuelan artists and just making it their own basically.

5-0 out of 5 stars I was waiting for his Hits
Franco De Vita is a one of Venezuelan's greatest composers and interpreters. All of his songs in this CD are definitely his best Hits. There are some "Live" versions that makes the whole CD unforgetable, specially to his fans. His piano introductions to some of his songs makes me hear it once and again.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the classiest Franco De Vita hits packages
Here is yet another Franco De Vita greatest hits collection, but this one is noteworthy for a few reasons. It features a full booklet with song lyrics, which are essential for a songwriter such as De Vita. His lyrics, particularly in such thoughtful, socially-conscious songs like "No Basta" and "Los Hijos de la Oscuridad," are among the most powerful and moving in Latin-pop today. This collection also marks the end of his relationship with Sony, as he signed with Universal Music last year, and a new disc is due later this year. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars PURE VENEZUELAN GOZADERA
INDEED ONE OF THEIR BEST ALBUMS FOLLOWED BY THEIR FIRST ONE "THE NEW SOUNDS OF VENEZUELAN GOZADERA". tHEY MAKE YOU DANCE, THEY MAKE YOU HAPPY, THEY MAKE MY DAY EVERYTIME I SPIN THEIR MUSIC. IF YOU GET A CHANCE OF SEEING THEM LIVE...DON'T THINK TWICE, THEY ARE "AWESOME" YOU WON'T STOP DANCING FROM THE VERY FIRST BEAT!! LOS AMIGOS INVISIBLES ARE MY "AMIGOS" AS WELL.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excelente
In this new work, Los amigos Invisibles, not only show his particular sound of Acid Latin Jazz, but they expose his maturity and versatility in each of the songs. This venezuelan group is raised as the only flag of his country in foreign territory, for the only one does not say. His topics reflects the good sound of the Funk, Acid Jazz and the soft notes of the Bossa in the topic "Playa Azul ". Indisputably, a great work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Latin band today
Los Amigos are, simply put, the hottest -- and best -- Latin act in music today. Their incorporation of traditional latin rhythms with jazz, funk and rock meld into a sound uniquely their own. Venezuelan Zingason continues the tradition of The New Sound of the Venezuelan Gozadera, Arepa 3000 and their limited release self-titled LP (which can be obtained via the LAI website). "Ease Your Mind" (in English, weirdly enough) may be the best track here, followed by its Spanish phonetic equivalent "Isyormain." And, of course, throughout the disc LAI never lose their humor or clever deviousness.

5-0 out of 5 stars Los Amigos Invicibles - best kept secret
They are by far my favorite Latin band. This band overflows in energy and talent. Their live shows are unsurpassed, and this album is the closest you can get to having that experience.
5-0 out of 5 stars Fun fun fun funky fun!
Los Amigos Invisibles put the fun in funky in this album. It is so damn good. You can hear their unbridled enthusiasm in every note, and it is infectious. This is a great CD- and was my favorite of 2002 (yeah, it was released earlier, but it didn't come my way until 2002) There are tons of great dance tunes on it, and some goofy one offs, but it is all good. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Not What I Expected
I expected the CD to be better than it actually was. I first heard cuchi-cuchi and i loved the song, so i thought the other songs on the CD would be energetic like that one. It wasn't a bad CD though. I'd say 40% of the songs were worth listening to.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice music
These guys have a real sense of music. The mix a lot of genres and the final result is a very delicious music.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Funky Good Time!
This CD is I believe the only record I own by a Venezuelan artist. I have no grasp of the language or culture from this area but going from previous reviews of this album I was intrigued to give this album a listen. It's a great funky ride with these Los Amigos Invisibles, which I'm guessing means `The Invisible Men' - Hey maybe I do grasp Venezuenalenese?! It's a great upbeat bunch of songs. Happy & uplifting for most of its course, it always puts me in the right frame of mind after a hard days work. For example `Cuchi-Cuchi' which I think is a slightly naughty number and even though I'm not conversant with the language I can still tell that there's a lot of humor to be found here. Check out `Masturbation Session' - What could that be about I wonder. Anyway the music is wonderfully realized rhythmically using nice percussion & quite subtle guitar work at times. Ranging from slushily romantic to high spirited sing-alongs some of the tracks could have come from the 60's and some from the 90's. There's even a 30 second techno track `No Le Metas Mano' + a corny boy band track `Amor' (sung in English no-less) & there's a nice interesting mix on show here. My favorite tracks are `Mujer Policia' & the horrificaly catchy `Pipi'. Get that out of your head if you can. I found this CD to be very inventive and original with a wide range of musical style's which makes for an interesting listen & variety is the spice of life. So come and have some fun in the sun with these invisible men. You'll be all the better for it believe me. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Suenos venezolanos
I'm surprised that a compilation could so capture me. Thismusic haunts me. Venezuelan music in all its myriad forms can have that effect. It comes wafting over the radio waves into neighboring Colombia and Trinidad and our mouths hang open in astonishment. Sometimes we wipe a nostalgic tear, often we get up and dance, sometimes we press our ears to the speakers to figure out "what is that instrument they are playing?" Well here is an eclectic mix of what Venezuela has to offer, without the static on the radio. You can answer for yourself why their Boleros are so heavenly and bittersweet, why their Palo sounds so African, why their Parranda is so hearty, why their voices are so salty and full of life's pathos.

5-0 out of 5 stars Franco Doesn't Suck!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Overwhelming first song
One of the reviewers below hits it right on the mark. The first song "Polo Margariteno" is so heartfelt, so overwhelming in its intensity that the rest of the CD (and 99% of any other music that you hear) could not possibly match it. It is that powerful. It is that joyous. Everytime I listen to it, I feel like weeping. That being said, there are plenty of other great songs on this CD, especially tracks 2, 9, 10, 17, and 19. Check it out. Everyone should hear "Polo Margariteno." It is one of the greatest songs ever recorded.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful
Heard this music on KPFA in the car once and when I got home I immediately looked up their play list and ordered it. Not all the songs are as good as the first one, but this has become one of my favorite CDs very quickly.

4-0 out of 5 stars great first album, a bit of the Venezuelan Zeitgeist of 60s
This is a collection of Venezuelan folk tunes, interpreted by single voiceand guitar (not the traditional formula). It is a fine sample of the NuevaTrova movement, which sought to revive folk traditions with new politicaland social statements. Bravo's voice changed dramatically in followingalbums; here the words just float from her mouth in a bright, sweet tone, with a gentility of diction that evokes instant nostalgia. This album is agreat, accessible introdution to the wealth of Venezuelan music. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of Oscar's best!
"Asi Soy..." has to be one of Oscar's very finest releases - and that's saying a lot, given his extensive catalogue. The man seldom disappoints, but this CD has incredible variety, from his customary salsa ("Vive Tu Vida") and merengue ("Adivinanza") gems all the way to a tejano-flavored duo with Rey Ruiz on "No Volvere" and a phenomenal, rock-infused "Lo Tuyo Es Mentira" that evokes the screaming guitar of Carlos Santana. The biting marital humor on "Se Acabo El Amor" (Love Is Over) will hit home with anyone. There's even an upbeat Christmas song to close the set, one that could become an instant classic.
