3-0 out of 5 stars 3-1/2 stars -- Not exactly sure what the rush was
Admit it, guys: after catching how good Rihanna looked in the video for "Pon de Replay" and especially "If It's Lovin' That You Want", many of us were crushed to learn that she was only 17. But then I heard that she was already dropping her second album, A Girl Like Me, and the time between the release of this album and Music of the Sun was even shorter than the time between the release of DMX's Flesh of My Flesh, Blood of My Blood and It's Dark and Hell Is Hot. In other words, I didn't understand why Rihanna released this album so quickly; maybe it was to get out of her contract with Def Jam?
2-0 out of 5 stars Room For Improvement
Rihanna burst out on to the music scene in the summer of 2005 with her hit single "Pon De Replay". Her debut album, "Music Of The Sun", was released just 3 weeks after the single hit #3 on the Billboard Pop Chart. After a failed attempt at a second single, the repetative "If It's Lovin' The You Want", Def Jam brought in C-List producers Evan Rogers and Carl Sturken (Christina Aguilera) to produce the singers sophmore album.
4-0 out of 5 stars Huge Surprise! Album actually is real good!
One of the biggest surprises for me actually this year in terms of music. I mean we had some great offerings like Christina's Back to Basics, Nelly Furtado's Loose, and John Mayer's Continuum(also include India Arie, Mary J Blige, and Bob Dylan). And then we had some disappointments like Beyonce's BDay (come on now and JT -to his fans- is not impressing me either with "Sexyback"). And in terms of new artists the only ones that I had liked was Natasha Bedingfield, Chris Brown (my adolescent relatives got me hooked on that), and Carrie Underwood (yeah you read it!). The reason I'm throwing out names is because Rihanna the artist behind "Pon De Replay" was the last person recently I expected to make a good album, because in some cases I was right before (Ciara being an example for me). But in Rihanna's case I totally misjudged and was glad to have listened to the album. What I love most is the variety of songs in terms of genre (rock, pop, hip/hop, island, r&b). You'd think after listening to "SOS" it would sound all alike and then you're hit with the next two tracks sounding so different and yet good. This was not something you would expect considering her first island-dance album that failed to hit platinum. The album's production is very polished (another surprise) and enjoyable. Now Rihanna isn't the best singer but she knows her limits and tries to stay within them (unlike some artists who I will not name). I'd recommend it but it isn't for everybody. But it is fun and entertaining music. ... Read more

Even as greatest hits packages go, this is an utter gem. Every song is inspired, in a class of its own, whether the real version of "I Shot the Sheriff," the hymnlike "No Woman, No Cry," or the sheer joy of "Jamming." Even allowing that Marley never wrote any bad material, then Read more

This is a great starting point for anyone who is interested in Bob Marley's music.Alot of his good music is on this CD. From 'No Woman no Cry' ,'I shot the Sheriff' to 'One Love', this is a great listen. One of the things about Bob Marley was that he merged alot of emotional effort into his songs. You can really feel the man's convictions when he sang.Well worth getting.

I wouldn't have bought this CD if I had known from the start that the song from the showcase wasn't on the soundtrack.

1-0 out of 5 stars Overhyped
I'm not feeling this soundtrack. It's everything that I hate about modern music: all style and no substance, too many heavy beats and not enough melody, too much pop and not enough genuine soul. I could go on and on. I wouldn't waste my money on this. Nothing memorable here. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Already a Classic!
One of my favourite albums... A very honest representaion of the Jamaica most people don't get to see, and as a fellow Jamaican, i can truly say this album makes me proud to be one. Well rounded musically, and takes you right through the evolution of Jamaican Music, from Ska (All Night) right up to Old School Dancehall (Khaki Suit) and beyond. I love it all...

5-0 out of 5 stars Carrying The Legacy
All it takes is one single and Damian had that with Welcome To Jamrock. When I first saw that video I knew I had to hear it again and then again and that sparked my interest in getting this album. I actually got it the first day it came out along with DJ Quik. Now I've listened to Bob Marley but I just know his main songs thanks to my moms. But I didnt expect this album to be that good.Every song is classic but the standouts are the title track, Beautiful with Bobby Brown, Road to Zion, Pimpas Paradise, well lets just say every song is a standout. Every song has a message in it, just like his father's songs. Everyone should have this cd already, if you're into hip hop reggae. One of my favorite albums ever.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have
The lyricist Damian Marley reminds me of a reggae version of Nas or Pac. The lyrical content is extraordinary. Please read the actual lyrics in the inside cover. It will make you appreciate the album even more. It is beyond "teenie bopper" club dub or radio music. It is conscious rebel music. It is intelligent. For people with something on their minds. One song, he keeps rhyming the same word for like 20 bars. A style like that takes talent. He has a definite M.C. influence.

The thumbnail description of Matisyahu: File under Hasidic Beatbox Reggae. Despite having markings of novelty, it's really nothing of the sort. Fronted by a man named Matisyahu (born Matthew Miller), they are truly a band. Two independently released CDs brought them a rapid and well-deserved ascent, making their signing with a major label a logical step. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A good second studio album but it does't capture the great live sound
Matisyahu seemingly came out of nowhere last year with the "Live at Stubb's" album, which charted the Billboard 200 charts for a long time but the reality is of course that Matisyahu had a 2004 debut studio album "Shake Off the Dust...Arise" that nobody seems to remember.
1-0 out of 5 stars Why is this guy so popular? Are people really that gulliable for a gimmick?
This album has zero going for it.It's schlocky reggae/rap with nothing new to say except for the lyrics. If you got this guy out of his religious garb and gave him a shave he'd be just another white guy trying to sound "down with those crazy urban youth kids."He is 100% packaging.Maybe he does that so that 30-something white execs like me won't feel stupid browsing in the rap section of Virgin Records or something, but really, folks, don't believe the hype. There's much better reggaeton, rap, and reggae rap out there; all this guy is offering is some color-coding as it were.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
This review comes from the perspective of a Christian who likes rhythm, but has not really participated much in other or mainstream Reggae. The novelty of a Hassidic rapper and my heavy study and love of and for the Old Testament (which Matisyahu is forever quoting) drew me into buying the Album Live at Stubbs.I have not heard their other album. Compared to Live at Stubbs, Youth shows excellent growth for an already talented and passionate group of artists.Live at Stubbs has very much the same sound, and to some extent, tempo in each song and one can only listen to it so many times. The present album shows grand variation with the established 'vibe.'Clearly, a lot of good production went into this album and it is well worth the purchase! ... Even though he's no Rude Bwoy, Sean Paul has expanded the notion of dancehall (at least in the US) more than any single artist since Shabba brought it to Carribean Riddims (BET) back in the day.Without question b/c of Sean Paul future dancehall artists have the opportunity for more visibility and more money.Point Blank.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Traveling Music
I'm not a big reggue fan but this CD is a good one. This CD is better than the last one and has a lot of real upbeat dance tracks. The music is so good you seem to forget the explicit references to the female anatomy, which is hidden behing the accent. Being somewhat conservative I was surprised about some of the lyrics after I listened to it for the 50th time. But all in all, the overall message is that he likes having a good time and that's better than some of the other themes that are on the music scene these days. So overall it will make you feel "Eyeree" which is the point for making music in the first place. :-)

5-0 out of 5 stars BEST BUY EVER!
This Sean Paul album is HOTT! I would say it's the best CD buy I've ever made and now I'm in love with it. Some excellent songs include Temperature, We Be Burnin', Eye Deh A Mi Knee (My favorite song ever, it doesn't get enough attention), the trinity, head in the zone, and send it on. the single "give it up to me" i don't really like, and it shouldn't have been a single, but the rest of the album is GREAT. love to dance? this is the one you've been waiting for.

As if this CD needed another 5 star review. I guess the main question I had going into this was - will Pink Floyd and Reggae actually work together? I like both although I've been around long enough that Dark Side Of The Moon has lost a lot of it's initial thrill. Familiarity with music you like does provide a kind of comfort zone but let's face it... after 30+ years that familiarity can put you to sleep. Well gang, it's wake up time. This CD puts a whole new light on The Dark Side. Just seconds into it I had a smile on my face. It's that good.

    Editorial Review

It's hard to believe that UB40 have been around since the early 1980s, but the proof is right here in the 18 tracks on this album. While most famous for their cover songs, UB40 have written a good portion of original material that's excellent. But songs like "Red Red Wine" and a previously unreleased version of the Doors' "Light My Fire" will attract the majority of listeners to this collection. Following in the footsteps of greats like Bob Marley and Burning Spear, this band from Birmingham, England (led by the two sons of folkie Ian Campbell, have helped keep the flame of roots reggae alive with their easy sound. They've even made over rock standards into their reggae template, including Sonny & Cher's "I Got You Babe" (with guest Chrissie Hynde of the Pretenders). In their own little way, UB40 have been gnawing away at musical barriers for the last 20 years, and this is an ideal summary of their achievements. Read more

Overall I was satisfied, as most of their hits and well known songs are included, but I have to agree with the upset reviewer who complained that some songs were cut short.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great UB40 value with added sound quality
UB40 have been a constant within the music scene for almost 3 decades by now.The first 15 years they were constant hit makers with consistent album sales. It seems that after that period, all of a sudden their time as a big selling artist was up as if the public had had enough.
4-0 out of 5 stars Reegae Kings
There are often times where the feelings of good Reegae music are just widely recognized through so many colors nad performers. That has been definitive through so many visionaries like Jimmy Cliff, Peter Tosh, the legendary Bob Marley, and so many others. Nevertheless, there has been one of the very few definitive that have showcased that worth very well, UB40. Since they've came out back in the 1980's, the group from Britain have been one of the most widely recognized groups that have not just done well with original songs, but also some of the most brillaintly rendered cover songs ever, and that has been graciously shown on this record.

On the surface, any similarities between what is commonly and reductively termed "folk" music (i.e., anything song-based and acoustic guitar-driven) and "electronica" (formless composition, laptops, synths, beats, bloops, etc.) seem tangential at best. Those who scoff at the notion of "folktronica" (or at least the term) have been given plenty of fodder over the last decade to justify their scorn. I'm thinking of the practice of gussying up already-finished acoustic guitar-driven songs with current-sounding electronic beats and hastily packaging them for public consumption.
5-0 out of 5 stars Juana's Most Mysterious
Juana Molina has been putting quiet Folktronica jewels for a while now. Not renouncing her Argentinean moods, Molina chooses here to explore wilder shores of Folk, somewhat reminiscent of Animal Collective, or Devendra Banhart in subdued moments.

I have sung more songs to them from off of this album than from anywhere else. I can't recommend this highly enough.

Tego's first album was a classic but had a few week tracks, his 2nd album was nothing but a collection of old songs and 2 or 3 new songs/or remixes. Editorial Review

Although reggae's religious overtones are often overshadowed by the music's ties to ganja and the hippie movement, there are some socially active or religious leaning artists out there. One of the newest comes in the unlikely figure of a young Hasidic Jew named Matisyahu. Singing with a slight ghetto patois, in Yiddish, and even displaying considerable beat-box skills, the New Yorker is at his best when he works himself into fits of righteous indignation and Old Testament fervor (the limits of his vocal range are laid bare when he croons on ballads). The lean three-piece band on this live recording, his second album, is aerodynamic and flexible, able to do the slow reggae groove or rock out with ferocity. After 12 tracks of stripped-down reggae, however, the music tends to blend into one long groove. Nonetheless, there is an undeniable urgency in this live recording that comes through loud and clear, making it a live document of note by one of reggae's most interesting new figures.--Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Second Greatest Reggae CD I know of... The first will be a surprise to even people who think they know everything reggae!
With "King Without A Crown" getting airplay on many alternative radio stations in the US, Matisyahu expresses an incredible spiritual fervor to the masses--with a quite attractive blend of reggae rhythms and elec. guitar that makes you feel part of an entire religious movement. I'm not religiously inclined by any means, but beyond the arrangements and just the general ambience of the music, Miller's voice is nothing short of amazing, and his delivery comes as nothing less than ethereal. Really, even a casual Marley fan can appreciate the combination of reggae with a decidedly great backing band. Spirituality is traditionally part of reggae, and Matisyahu is no exception, channeling a certain soul of honesty and hunger for a higher power. Like I said, I don't believe, but if I did, this would be the soundtrack to the top. But enough of that. Standouts are "Chop 'em Down", "King without a Crown", "Refuge", and "Close My Eyes", probably the best track here. But there are also the understated "Warrior" and "Exaltation", the two longest tracks. These don't feel like 7 minutes, because the band actually knows how to balance singing and instrumentation, often with the singing supplementing. And the one surprise: "Beat Box", happens to be an amazing display of skill for a human beat box, which at its end, the guitar comes in. Rapping by the MC and Miller ensues. "My mother sang songs in camps of concentration. His mother sang songs inside the cotton plantation. Her mother sang songs while we were bombing their nation. Now I sing songs for much more than just my occupation"... Better rapping skills than most of the [...] flung at us today, and did I forget to say that THE LYRICS MEAN SOMETHING. It's like a revolution or something. Be part of it.
5-0 out of 5 stars Lush!
I heard about Matisyahu through Kimmel on late night and was extremely intrigued, so I got the album immediately.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, But Left Out Important Songs.
Good, (well all Bob Marley is good) but I still have that feeling from what I got 5 years ago when it was released that they left out some very important songs, yes I am delighted that they have put "So Much Trouble In The World" on it as it is a flawless song, but reasons why they have left out "Satisfy My Soul" and the oringinal "Redemption Song", still leave me saying why.
5-0 out of 5 stars Forget "Legend" this is the Best Bob Marley Compilation that's Out There!
For many years, "Legend" was the only truly great compilation of this man's life's work but if you don't already have that album or if you are new to Bob Marley and want to find out what all the fuss is about, this hard-to-find version is really the best that there is.20 great track selections and one track, the last one, that's not even on any other Marley album and most importantly of all, the sound quality is brilliant!Too many albums use the "remastered" claim too easily and sometimes even falsely to get you to "upgrade" from the album you already have but this is not one of them as this disc hasbeen remastered to perfection. If you are not too wild about "live" performances just like me, then don't worry too much about the more expensive 2-disc version as this great one-disc version will more than suffice.Great track selections, great sound quality, great value for money, this is THE Bob Marley one-disc compilation album to get.Highly recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent, underrated Marley compilation

5-0 out of 5 stars Un disco delicioso.
5-0 out of 5 stars lilting?
I don't know what the lyrics mean because I don't speak the language but Juana Molina playing in a room is like lighting a smudge, it fills the room and pushes away a days lament and lets your positive thoughts float.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful from start to finish, a must have!
When I heard the track 'Tres Cosas' on radio one night I knew I had to get the album, and it's quickly turned into one of my favourites - Juana Molina's airy voice floats through a set of mellow and hypnotic tracks that flow perfectly from one to the next. It may create a more subdued mood compared to her album 'Segundo' but in my opinion 'Tres Cosas' is miles ahead of that one - it's more subtle and refined production lends it a warm, enveloping ambience - something that can be enjoyed more and more with each listen, even if you can't understand the lyrics! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Volume in Great Series
I love this CD (and the others in the series) because they instantly create the mood you are after. In this case, if you want Latin sounds and rhythms, you pop this CD into your stereo and you're instantly transported away. I often play this CD at work because it provides a nice backdrop of sound that's upbeat without being too distracting.

4-0 out of 5 stars Draws you in...
Yes,its true. From the first track onward, this album draws you in with its storytelling, spoken word and soothing melodies. At first glance, this wasn't something I would listen to but, alas after my first listen, it was hard for me to listen to anything else for a week!! Putumayo always does it right when they put together a project.Standout tracks are "Reflejo de Luna", "Caminhos de Cuba",and "Carmela".Any Putumayo fan will not be disappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for lounging
This is one of the best Putumayo CDs I own so far. Each song has a particular mood and character to it - from trippy, relaxing, romantic, sexy to dramatic. Love the mix of electronica beats, violins and flamenco guitars. A must have!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Reggaetonline CD Review: Los Benjamins
Franklin Alegria, [...]- October 02, 2006 - The long awaited and most anticipated Reggaeton CD of the year "Los Benjamins" by Luny Tunes and Tainy was released yesterday September 26th, 2006. I was thankful I had my hands on this CD yesterday because I went to three different stores and it was sold out. Finally when I thought I was not going to find it that day I went to Wal-Mart I found the last copy available and purchased it. Knowing what Luny Tunes are capable of in the Reggaeton industry, the public is well aware of the fact that they will do a good job in every CD they release. Once again, after listening to "Los Benjamins" they proved they are still the best producers of Reggaeton.
3-0 out of 5 stars Reggaeton... not as good as before
You can only compare this album to Mas Flow 2. Fact is, it's not as good, not even close. Is it one of the best reggaeton albums of the year? No...
3-0 out of 5 stars Sounds like pop to me...
Ok so I bought this CD expecting another great production from Luny Tunes. I have mas flow, la trajectoria, mas flow 2. They've never let me down until...now...This production feels waayyyyy too much like pop music. I really don't think it's Luny Tunes but more the direction that Reggaeton is taking. I'm really not liking it. Whatever happen to el tigeraje, el tirareo'? This album does have some heavy hitters but I guess I'm just not feeling it. And oh yeah one more thing what in the hell were they thinking when they put RBD on there. Tisk tisk tisk... *shakes head* ... Read more

Jamaican filmmaker Perry Henzell made reggae an integral playerin his gritty 1973 saga of arenegade Kingston singer who becomes a modern Robin Hood, casting oneof the style's earliest stars, Jimmy Cliff, in thelead, and filling this soundtrack--here presented in a remasteredversion--with classics from Toots & the Maytals ("Pressure Drop,""Sweet and Dandy"), Desmond Dekker ("Shanty Town"), the Melodians("Rivers of Babylon"), and the Slickers ("Johnny Too Bad"). Cliffhimself gets pole position, however, getting in the first ("You Can GetIt If You Really Want") and last ("The Harder They Come") words in thisfirst-rate reggae primer, which also features Cliff's enduring "ManyRivers to Cross." The Harder They Come is as close as a 35-minute album with two reprises can come to a perfection. 'Pressure Drop', 'Johnny Too Bad', 'Bridges of Bablyon', and the title track all are true classics.

5-0 out of 5 stars Genius.
When I got this CD there was a sticker on it that said "Even Your Fat Mom Will Like This". That wasn't true nor did I expect it to be but this CD is truly amazing. Granted it's explicit and not at all appropriate but it is ingenius and hilarious. The lyrics are incredibly clever and it is a unique approach to the whole genre of Reggaeton.
