5-0 out of 5 stars Bien hecho
5-0 out of 5 stars Wow excellent
I loved the album.
5-0 out of 5 stars Salsa is back on this CD !
Being a salsero from "back in the days" - 60's, 70's, ... It is very refreshing to see the "pendulum swing" back to those days. The rhythm, arrangements and instrumentation on this CD are that of pure SALSA with reggaeton artists riffing within the music. Not, the other way around. The reggaeton artists blend in with the Salsa music. Andy Montanez is a legend in music who is an original member of El Gran Combo. Daddy Yankee, Julio Voltio and other reggaeton artists performed their singing (rapping) style within the framework of Montanez's music. A great CD for Salseros and lovers of reggaeton. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars this bloke is overrated
he was cool in 1999, even his second english album had some decent tracks but that was his creative peak. One would think that after travelling around the world including places like india, ricky would have drawn a lot of inspiration for his music. He tried but he failed. This music just isn't good. I gave this album a second chance recently and it still sounds horrible! He can't decide whether he wants to be hip hop or bollywood or what. He should just stick to what he does best with his latin-fused pop/rock sound instead of trying too hard to appear as a serious, credible artist.

1-0 out of 5 stars Worst Album
I love Ricky and I think he is great at what he does. However, this album did not meet my expectations at all. I only like 1 or 2 songs. I think Ricky could have done way better. If i could return my cd and get my money back I would. There go 15 bucks I'll never see again.

Editorial Review

Why is it that island cultures so often create the most magical, deeply individual sounds? Is it because they are usually miles away from corrupting outside influences? Perhaps it is due to the fact that they are forced to create music from their own inner resources. The powerful voices of Jamaican reggae, Cuban rumba, and Puerto Rican salsa have been joined on the world stage by Cape Verdean Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good, not great, but still fun
"Danca ma mi Criola" is a bouncy love song."Me ki sa oule" is a lilting song of longing."Bomba traigo yo" is joyfully infectious. The BEST songs are "Falso Testemunho" from Cape Verde&"Veinte anos" from Cuba. Both these songs are about unrequited love&betrayal. For popular songs, they are moving."Sonegaly" is an enchanting song from Madagascar.Tarika hasn't been as good since."E I Taurua"&"Olinda Road" are magical songs from Tahiti&Hawaii.
4-0 out of 5 stars One of the best in this series
My whole family loves this CD.My 2 year old daughter dances up a storm and my 4 year old son puts on his jolly roger do-rag and swashbuckles about.A little mellower and less adventurous, musically, than similar compilations, but the quality is higher throughout.

3-0 out of 5 stars Incomplete
Incomplete. What else can I say? This is a good mix, and a good cd, but the title is Islands. So, why not throw something a little more exotic into the mix? Cuba and Hawaii are predictable, but what about music from the Azores? What about the Madeira Islands? A little Luis Bettencourt, some Jose Medeiros, or Katia Guerreiro and this cd would have been a whole lot better!!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Mountain Music of Puerto Rico
This is a wonderful CD that brought back memories of many years ago.So many of my friends really enjoyed the selections and asked where I had found this CD!!I had the opportunity to listen to it prior to purchasing and I am so glad to have purchased it.I would never have found it in the stores.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mountain Music of Puerto Rico
Excellent collection of music from Puerto Rico. These are the sounds of the old time music our parents heard when they were young. It takes us back in time. Love it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply the best....A must have
I am 40 yrs. old and my parents listened to this type of Jibaro music.Jibaro...like it has a negative connotation.Well the truth is as we grow older we learn to appreciate the beauty of music.,the lyrics, the sounds, the meaning. This is by far a true depiction of folk music from Puerto Rico, but many from other countries enjoy it as well. This is a CD that every Puerto Rican household should have because it is classic, it provokes cultural and Puerto Rican pride. It is music that makes you feel it in the blood, in your heart and in your bones.I bought one for my father, for my husband and for my step father. You can listen to tracks of this CD on Smithsonian Folkways Recordings and enjoy for yourself small tastes of jibaro music.Go out and buy it...it really belongs in your home and it will take you back to where you should never leave. You can even get the lyric at Smithsonian Folkways Recordings. You will never hide this CD away and others will beg you for a copy.tell them to go buy it.It superb and it is something to be proud of. A 5 rating is still too little. The price is reasonable and the pleasure is enormous.

5-0 out of 5 stars never gets boring
You can almost never get sick of this CD! I have been listening to it in my car for months. It's so varied and upbeat. It's just an excellent CD- thanks Putumayo!

5-0 out of 5 stars Buena introduccion a la musica Boricua
5-0 out of 5 stars A fantastic album
I love the Putumayo series, as it introduces people to music that they otherwise may not hear. Like this album, for example. I was not really familiar with Puerto Rican music. And some people I know just assume it is like Ricky Martins stuff. But how wrong they are (thank God!). This is a wonderful album, and I will most certainly try to aquire more music from these featured artists. In particular, Eddie Palmieri. I just love his track "Cafe". But each and every artist on here is wonderful that I would like to hear more. The 27 page booklet is written in English and Spanish and features an essay about Puerto Rico, as well as a photo and information on each artist. I recommend this album to everyone who would like an instant pick-me-up. It makes you feel like dancing. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Que Lindo
This is a good Cd if you love Chayanne's songs and don't have all his cd's. All the songs are beautiful as he is. I enjoy listening to it over and over again.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Nobody's Stars are in the sky, we are just workers down here" - Chayanne, Este Ritmo se Baila As documentary 1988
I've been a die hard fan of this man since he was in one of the original boy bands, Los Chicos. I have seen him change from the nice clean cut guy he was until the MAN he is today. As a huge fan and I am and always been, this record is a grea way for you to learn and enjoy him the same way I do every day. El Dicho dice, "Nadie es Profeta en su Tierra" but I really beg to differ.

5-0 out of 5 stars 1 de los mejores de Puerto Rico/1 of the best of Puerto Rico
Great song "Y tu te vas" best of all, SO HOT!!!! You can feel it deep in your veins, especially if you know Spanish as a native speaker. Se siente muy adentro hasta la fibra interior y hace vibrar las venas. "Quisiera" is also great song. Ricky doesn't come close. In fact, his not the best Puerto Rico offers, he's just good looking (or, should I say gringo looking?). ... Read more

This album has all the sweetest songs of Chayanne and they all made me cry.It is the first time that someone's voice squeezed my heart so much.Of course the songs are great, but having him singing to them make every song so special, so tender, and moving. You feel his love toward his work through his voice. This album will be the greatest company for you and your love ones, or just for yourself.

3-0 out of 5 stars THE BEST SALSERO, BUT NOT HIS BEST WORK!!!
I AM PROBABLY THE BIGGEST AND MOST LOYAL GILBERTITO FAN.BUT THE TRUTH IS THAT UNLESS YOU ARE A DIE HARD FAN, YOU MAY WANT TO SKIP THIS ONE.POR LA HERIDA DE UN AMOR, AND HABLANDO CLARO (SALSA VERSION) ARE ABOUT THE BEST THIS CD HAS TO OFFER.I THINK GILBERTO HAS TO GET OMAR ALFANNO BACK TO WRITING HIM HIS TRADEMARK SONGS AND THAT WILL REALLY MAKE A DIFFERENCE.DON'T GET ME WRONG HE IS STILL THE MAN, THERE WILL NEVER BE ANOTHER CABALLERO DE LA SALSA.BUT HE NEEDS TO RETHINK HIS CHOSING OF SONGS WHICH WILL CONTINUE MAKING HIM THE BEST.

3-0 out of 5 stars If you are Santa Rosa's fan, get it; otherwise don't.
This CD has very good salsa tracks. However, about half of the CD is "baladas". I wish Gilberto would come up with another "only salsa" CD like his last release "Autentico". In summary, if you are Gilberto's fan, you should get the CD, otherwise it's not worth getting it. ... Read more

I have to admit I love old salsa songs (Im 36 from Venezuela and adore Oscar DLeon, Dimension Latina, Ismael Rivera, Hector Lavoe), but I must recognize that Luis Enrique and Gilberto Santa Rosa mean the best of the second generation of salsa A must for a salsa rhythm lover! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, highly recommend
I had the pleasure of meeting Los Pleneros at Rutgers in 1995and I was immediately hooked. While Bomba and Plena music is lots of fun all on its own, this group takes it to another level.I can't seem to keep my Puerto Rican hips still when this CD is playing. If you ever get the chance to catch one of their performances, I guarantee you won't be sitting down for long, they'll make sure of that!

5-0 out of 5 stars Puerto Rican Roots
If you haven't encountered Plena before, one of the great musical traditions of Puerto Rico, this album is a great place to start. It's a beautifully conceived project wonderfully well executed.Be prepared tohear great soulful vocals with terrific folky arrangements.

4-0 out of 5 stars Somos Boricuas
This is an amazing CD. When I first discovered it a few years ago, I felt like I found something antique and valuable.I still feel that way.The most interesting cut on the CD is "Tilin", which almost anyAfrican American raised on the East Coast will recognize from Sunday schoolas "He 'Rose".Whether the tune came from Africa tobothBorinquen and the States,or the early Puerto Rican migrants brought it tothe States where itwas adapted by African Americans, it shows a clearoverlap of cultures. The CD should be your first purchase, if you'reinterested in learning about bomba y plena. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the 1970s Salsa era's high points...and a real masterpiece too.
No serious salsero should miss out on this CD as it's one of the greatest Puerto Rican Salsa recordings ever made. Olivencia and company give us some searing-hot and very funky "Salsa Dura" grooves suchas "Evelio Y La Rumba", "Si Estas Herido", "Casimira", "A La Yumbae" and the timeless title track. The late Chamaco Ramirez gives some of his wittiest, funkiest and powerful soneos (improvisations) which serve as a perfect compliment to the musicians' take-no-prisoners and fiery playing. This new and digitally remastered version offers considerably better sound quality than the previously available CD and at a lower price. If you don't yet have this CD all I can say is... Editorial Review

Red-hot rhythms and percolating percussion drive the excellentself-titled debut by this young foursome. But the key to the group's appeal isits splendid vocal harmonies, which blend typical salsa soneos with R&Bflavorings. Think of a Latino Boyz II Men powered by salsa's congas and elephantinehorns, and you get the picture. The leadoff single "A Puro Dolor" quicklyclimbed the charts, thanks to its rhythmic fusion and the magnificent vocalacrobatics of boyhood friends Angel, Pedro, and brothers Javi and Georgi.Elsewhere, there are traditional salsa grooves fueled by heavy trombones ("MiCorazón Te Recuerda"), mellow boleros ("Dónde Está TuAmor"), and spirited merengues ("Lo Que Yo No Tengo"). The bilingual cumbia"Muévelo" showcases additional spice as the foursome show off theirability to sing rapid-fire improvised soneos in English and Spanish. Read more

Oh my lord thank-you once again for giving us music to enjoy and dance.Papo and Quique Lucca along with La Sonora Poncea has smashed Salsa scene once again in the format of Salsa Gorda and Clave with this astonishing production.Hands-down this is the best of 2000 and beyond.Competitors standby...La Poncea...is taking center stage now. After Tito Puente's Birdland Live recording...now La Poncea is on the spanking side of Salsa. It's really a shame that they are not in with the click in the Miami Mafia of Latin music. If you want to hear good Cuban music well step-back and think about it for a minute because La Sonora Poncea 45th Anniversary Live is way much better in all respects.I love real cuban music but La Sonora Poncea from Ponce Puerto Rico RULES. There's just no doubt about it.I don't say these things unless I truly mean it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb cd of February, 2000 concert!
This musical giant is celebrating its 45th anniversary and this cd includes almost all of the songs performed last February at San Juan, P.R. with most of its former lead singers( Luigi Texidor, Yolanda Rivera, etc.) plus special guest stars, salsa legends Andy Montanez, Cano Estremera and Ismael Miranda Only missing is Tito Gomez who sang that day but his record company did not grant approval for the inclusion of his tracks in this cd. For lovers of "Salsa Gorda" by the best musicians from Puerto Rico. ... Read more

The gimmick here is Carnegie Hall. Gilberto is a acceptable singer but he has little to do with the music. The ideas and images are passe and tired. His lyrcis are predictably banal. Santarosa is a symptom of the demise of Salsa. A formula that has been implemented to replace to that vibrant, organic NYC street sound. If you want to hear some real symphonic Salsa get Willie Colon's Baquine de los Angeltios Negros or Ruben Blades' Maestra Vida. Save your money one these.

4-0 out of 5 stars great striaghtfoward salsa
If you're looking for a good disc of straight-ahead modern salsa then you couldn't get any better than this one. The songs are intricate and very listenable, and the musicianship is absolutely incredible.5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent CD
