2-0 out of 5 stars Not strong enough-this compilation is decaf
If this album is like coffee,it's decaf. It lacks the punch to keep one awake for an early morning drive.I'd be asleep at the wheel.
4-0 out of 5 stars Chill out with a cup of coffee ora Mojito......
Good Putumayo CD.Several very good tracks on this CD. 'Guajira Bonita' is fantastic, and reminds me of my trip to Peru hiking the Inca trail. Tracks 2, 3 are good as well, and then proceed to the wonderful Susana Baca with her bold, beautiful voice on 'Maria Lando'. 'Below the Bassline' is a wonderfully mellow Reggae sounding instrumental track that brings me back to all carribbean trips. 'Dilema' reminds me of my salsa adventure to Cuba, and 'Esa Noche' is a very good instrumental track with fantastic guitar that makes me yearn for returning to Mexico City or Oaxaca. Track 9, 10 are good as well. 'Este Son' will help you chill out with your cup of coffee. Highly recommend this CD if you enjoy Latin music, as well as international music. The pamphlet submitted with the CD about the artists is informtive and only adds to the enjoyment of the CD. A Putumayo Must!

5-0 out of 5 stars Awsome CD
I am a native spanish speaker and this is an excellent CD.It puts my baby to sleep every time.A great mix of different Latin cultural songs.

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this CD
After listening to electronic sounding classical music for my baby after so many months, this beautifuly sung/played CD does the trick to ease her to sleep. I play it just for me sometimes!

5-0 out of 5 stars The BEST LULLABY ALBUM en español!
As an educator planning to raise my children bilingually, I was very happy to discover this CD. My collection of materials would not be complete without it. It is absolutely beatiful and I can't wait to sing along to many of these songs to put my little one to sleep. I find listening to it now (baby is on the way) very soothing and would actually recommend it to anyone who wants to add traditional music in Spanish to their collection. This album is easy to listen to again and again.

In 1950, at the dawn of an era of musical exotica (in which composers such as Esquivel, Martin Denny, and Les Baxter would test the limits of hi-fi strangeness), Yma Sumac entered the scene. She was a diva from the Andes with a four-vocal octave range, an unrelenting trill, and great looks, and she became an overnight sensation. 5-0 out of 5 stars Yma Sumac: The Power of 4 Octives
Although Ms. Sumac could sing in 4 octives, her material ran from pretty exotic and lush to absolutely dreadful. Who cares?? In some ways she was the "Ed Wood" of the music world, and so over-the-edge, you could hardly believe it. I remember when she was popular and yes, we really did take her totally seriously. But let's face it, we never heard anything like her... and she was incredibly entertaining. This colllection will amaze, delight and completely blow you away. It's like nothing else in popular music you have ever heard.5-0 out of 5 stars Sheer power and beauty in an amazing vocal range
I love this recording!Wow!!!! I have been singing for over thirty years and this is the first woman I have EVER heard who can sing both higher AND lower than me! "Chunco" is unbelievable! Her singing, coupled with the brilliant music of Vivanco, makes her recordings an essential part of any serious musician's collection.Folks, don't wait, don't think, just buy this woman's music!I will say that I enjoy her voice more on the earlier music, as they seem to be more fitted to her big, vibrant, exotic, Incan priestess vocal pyrotechnics.I find myself just listening over and over - she is truly amazing, and is in a class head and shoulders above all other coloraturas, because of the sheer power she has in the entirety of her range.

5-0 out of 5 stars Which singer has the greatest range?
Having been aware of Ms Sumac since the 1950s, I am still amazed at her voice range.Has there been anyone else with a greater range?I have heard that Julie Andrews also has a 4 octave range. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Latin America has produced dozens of brilliant female singers and composers, including trail-blazers like Violetta Parra, Elis Regina, Soledad Bravo and Mecedes Sosa, to mention only a few. The present generation is also shaping up nicely. There are more women bandleaders than ever before, firmly in charge of their own talent, free to choose their material and back-up players without interference. As they so often do, Putumayo has supplied a short-list of emerging stars; the voices heard on this album are uniformly splendid and worthy of deeper exploration. But there are a few stand-outs: Brazilian Mônica Salmaso's creamy dark voice makes a strong impression, as does Chilean chanteuse Jacqueline Fuentes's plaintive, fado-like mezzo and Lhasa's limpidly nostalgic Mexican ranchera. Some may cavil at yet another gender-based compilation. But they should consider that male-dominated equivalents have existed since the dawn of the recorded era; they were just not labeled as such. 5-0 out of 5 stars Muy Hermosa!
Women of Latin America is truly a sweet treasure. This is the first album that i have bought from this series. I am very glad i did. Each artists from this CD exemplifies a mood in their own way. At times sensual to haunting, sad, and hopeful, these artists truly are talented, beautiful, and powerful. I wish artists like these had more praise and attention than the artists these days that are nothing more but entertainers using just sex appeal to be noticed. This is what real music is about, even when you don't know a single word from the lyrics! I know Spanish pretty well, and im telling you, even the lyrics are "muy hermosa" and just incredible. This is an album worth having if you truly appreciate the passion and beauty of the Spanish language, and beautiful Latin American woman. Gozar de la musica de vida!

5-0 out of 5 stars Vocal Prowess meets diverse styles
The lovely women of Latin America profiled inWOMEN OF LATIN AMERICA were chosen for their vocal prowess, their diverse styles, and their ability to appeal across cultures to a wide audience outside of as well as within Latin America.
5-0 out of 5 stars Epitome of Feminine Vocal Grace
What a perfect intro CD to listeners new to Latin songs performed by some of the greatest female vocalists! The multifarious selection in the CD exposes the listeners to the rich spectrum of melodious, soothing, and sensual musical gifts that those female artists share with the rest of world with their grace. This CD also serves as a perfect ramification tool to deepen one's appreciation of any of the female vocalists listed. I like all of them and intend to purchase each vocalist's individual CD to further my understanding of her musical style and philosophy. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An Entire Genre of Music In A Single Voice
My parents had both of the 10" records that were eventually combined on one LP, available now as a CD. The music caught my ear as a child, and then I rediscovered it as a young man, when experiments with pot and psychedelic drugs lead to this music being in heavy rotation on my turntable. But you don't need chemical augmentation to enjoy this incredible stuff, just an adventurous spirit; there is nothing else like either the music of Yma Sumac, or her voice, and few have bothered to imitate her (it's impossible, anyway; with the help of Les Baxter, Bas Sheva tried and failed). What, exactly, IS this music? Is it exotica?Opera?Avant-Garde?Latin Dance Music? The answer is "all of the above," and then some ... it harkens back to primitive times and anticipates acid rock.It would be at home in a tiki lounge, yet not be out of place on club dance floor.Check out a lounge/remix album called (what else?) ELECTRO LOUNGE, which samples Yma Sumac's music on a couple of tracks.Back to VOICE OF THE XTABAY, what was once a 10" record called INCA TAQUI makes up the second half of this album, and includes some of Ms. Sumac's most astounding vocal work.Among the first artists to play with vocal double-tracking, Yma's performances on 'Chuncho (The Forest Creatures )' and 'Maylaya! (My Destiny)' may be heard yet still not be believed. The first half of the LP features the musical arrangements of Les Baxter, and is slightly more conventional than the more ethnic sounding second half (arranged by then-husband Moises Vivanco), yet taken as a whole, this is probably Sumac's most powerful effort. For a look at the beautiful Yma Sumac in person, see the campy 1954 Charlton Heston adventure film SECRET OF THE INCAS, in which she pantomimes to a couple of songs from VOICE OF THE XTABAY.The cover of this album is taken from the set of that movie. For further listening, seek out the stereo version of FUEGO DEL ANDE (my personal favorite Yma Sumac record). I am still waiting for a CD issue of 1972's MIRACLES, a failed attempt at a comeback, which is, nevermind the dismal reviews it got at the time, a stunner, sounding like a cross between the Yma of old and Led Zeppelin!Unfortunately, this album did see digital reissue as YMA ROCKS for a brief time and, drat it, I missed it ... I think its time has come again. Is anyone listening?

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Unusual And Incredible
This album is incredible. I am 15 years old, and a massive fan of hip-hop, RnB and pop, and yet this unusual indescribable album is incredible and I love it! The music and that stunning voice is completely in a league of its own. The songs are incredible; a heady mix of mambos, salsas and sambas along with steady and engaging beats. The voice itself has the 'stop you in your tracks to listen' effect as it is mesmerising and incredible; it truly has to be heard to be believed. The best song, by far in my opinion, is the incredible 'Chuncho'. The range, technique and beat in this song is unique; out-standing. This album is a musical and vocal masterpiece.

4-0 out of 5 stars if you like exotica............
Yma Sumac had an unbelievable range as a singer.Although this is not my favorite Yma Sumac album , it still is great, the arrangements are by the one and only Les Baxter, who is on of my all-time favorites. This album was very unusual for the time it was released, not the most "commerical" of albums. ... Read more

Editorial Review

The burgeoning genre of Latintronica has already combined shimmering electronica soundscapes with Brazilian bossa nova, Argentine tango, Mexican banda sinaloense and Colombian cumbia. So it was only a matter of time before a collective of trendy musical gourmets attempted a similar fusion with the rootsy folklore of Peru: the Afro-Peruvian sound made famous in this country by Susana Baca. That collective is Novalima, and its four members, who live in different corners of the world, have been successful in creating yet another Latintronica sub-genre.At times, the group's choices are a bit shallow (a dub version of the classic "Toro Mata" is strangely lifeless), but for the most part, Novalima strikes the perfect balance between reverential homage and joyous futurism."Mayoral" is an irresistible dancefloor stomper, whereas the atmospheric "Mandinga" mixes crystalline female vocals with nostalgic touches of muted trumpet.Novalima's most inspired idea was to include guest spots by seminal artists from the Afro-Peruvian field such as singer Lucila Campos.Afro manages to be comfortingly authentic and playfully innovative at the same time. I received this album as a gift for my birthday.Although I had heard of Yma Sumac, I had never heard her sing.Imagine how excited I was to open this gift!
5-0 out of 5 stars One for all you lounge lizards!
Yma Sumac is completely insane! Like they released her from a mental hospital for opera singers and just handed her a microphone. GET THIS CD if you dont already have it!!! Awsome stuff!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Ow...my ears
Let me first warn you...this cd and artist are not for the musically faint of heart.Yma Sumac's musical style is...different to the extreme.I have likened her to an operatically trained vocalist who went to town on mambo music. She basically uses her voice as another instrument in many parts of the cd and jumps from octave to octave, it is very rare to actually hear her sing lyrics. That being said, her voice is simply awesome. It is one of the most versatile and powerful voices that I have ever heard, I truly believe that she would have been a trip to see live.If you are a fan of hotfire mambo music with a twist, or are looking for something new and totally not-normal I would highly recommend this cd.It is an excellent way to become introduced to one of the most unique musicians you will ever hear.My personal favorite is Chicken Talk. However, the entire cd is just a fascinating listen. But be warned, I have worried a lot of people in my dormitory when I have played this cd, and you probably will too. ... I expected to get a CD of Andean flute music, which I greatly enjoyed hearing on local radio in South America. And this CD delivered! I don't listen to this CD as often as I expected to, probably owing to that it is a collection of different styles and formats rather than a continuous listening format.
5-0 out of 5 stars wonderful
The compositions herein are comparable to Beethoven in terms of their ability to evoke emotion. However, unlike Beethoven, they are simple and sublime and retain a close connection to nature that is characteristic of all Native American music.I especially like track #15 with its grave and intricate beauty. This is now my favorite song. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars I'm SO glad I found the CD's....Have original recordings!
I have always been impressed by this woman's range - ever since her first record was pressed.Don't know what the "true" story is behind her short career but I do remember that she was promoted as an Inca Princess...whatever - I have always enjoyed ALL of her albums because of her vocal abilities.I believe that somewhere I might still have the original 'records' but I am so glad to now be able to add the CD's to my library.5-0 out of 5 stars The best Yma album
This album had been accused of being too Hollywood like.Mambo has been declared as the best of Yma's albums.I always have to decide between the two, but Legend wins mostly because of the fun Zana, why it isn't on the Ultimate album is questionable.5-0 out of 5 stars An unforgettably exotic expedition into the high Andes
In this unbelievably lush and haunting CD, Miss Sumac unfolds the saga, in song, of an Inca Princess and Virgin of the Sun who falls in love with a mere mortal and is cast out to wander the mountains singing of her love. The songs are in Quechua, language of the ancient Incas and Spanish. One does not have to know either of these languages, though, as her vocal artistry surpasses all boundaries, even that of mortality. This can be viewed as the companion album to ' Voice of the Xtabay', which is also chilling and unforgettable. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Consistently good music
This CD has 5 star music for the majority of it's tracks, the one downside is that it does not have a version of El Condor Pasa. However, I am a collector of World Folk Music and Andes music inparticular, and this is overall my favourite Andes flute CD.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful music
If you have any interest in this style of music, BUY THIS CD! I own several in this genre and despite its relatively low price, this one is still the best. Beautiful harp/flute melodies are accompanied by Spanish/Quechua vocals; the tone is lively, yet mournful at the same time, very powerful combination. My only complaint is that the liner notes are limited to a short history of Andean music--there is no commentary on any of the individual songs, and no credit is given to the very talented musicians. ... Chilean traditional music septet Inti-Illimani have spent the last 30 yearsmixing together South American folk styles and a human-rights oriented political agenda.Taking on the largely string-oriented folk music of the Andes Mountains, Inti-Illimanisurround their often unison Spanish vocals with rainstorms of guitars, charangos, ronrocos, and guitarrons. In doing so, the group celebrates the everydayness of Andeanmusic and culture--striking a chord of solidarity with global folk cultural struggles. --Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Album
Of all of Yma Sumac's albums, this is one of my all-time favorites. Being her first stereo album also helps, though the first Right Stuff CD reissues used the monophonic masters by mistake, which were recorded separately from the stereo ones. They are a bit different - in fact, the monophonic version sounds better on many of the tracks, but is impossible to find now. There were actually three different versions of this 1996 reissue but all look exactly the same on the outside. Fuego del Ande is a Folk album through and through and it is especially interesting to hear Yma's revival of her 1943 hit that she recorded in Argentina in her first sessions there, "Virgenes del Sol," which she sings here in fantastic "Vocalese" style. This was my first Yma Sumac album back in the '60s and is still my favorite - and that is from someone who owns nearly every pressing that exists from all the corners of the world, including many live recordings.Additional general comments: Yma Sumac says her range is five octaves, but the "official" range is 4 1/2 octaves, to answer the reviewer who wondered about it. Also, as a comment to another reviewer, Yma Sumac and Moises Vivanco were divorced by the time this album was released, the divorce having become final in 1957. Supposedly they remarried for the long Soviet Union tour in '60/'61, then divorced a second time after that. Her 1970 recording (released in '71/'72) was reissued on CD as "Yma Rocks!" and is available exclusive through the Official Authorized Yma Sumac Homepage. It is her second best, in my opinion - next to Mambo, of course. She sued to have it pulled because of the liner notes and credits (Les Baxter's claim to have produced it which he did not, and the liner notes making him seem responsible for her earlier career), not because of the recording itself. A note to Capitol Records / EMI (Right Stuff) should they see this: consider a rerelease of the monophonic version of "Fuego del Ande" to go along with this stereo one! They were recorded separately so are like two different albums with the same cover art and songs. Market one as "High Fidelity" (as the originals were) and the other "Stereo."

I wish that reviewers who review albums would learn a little more about the facts of music. A four octave range does not mysteriously become an "almost five octave range".

1-0 out of 5 stars Yma is great, but not here.
I'm a great fan of Yma Sumac, but must admit that this CD is her worst. Acualy, there is a worse one yet produced in the 60's by Les Baxter, whic she demanded to be taken off the market. The rest of her CDs are pure joy.Listne up and compare. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Potpourri of Pleasaure
Talk about diverse! This Rough Guide travels from Cuban son and the magnificent piano playing of Ruben Gonzalez to popular Indonesian songs and back again. One must have an open mind and broad tastes to be able to absorb the vastly divergent styles on this CD. However, each selection is superb on its own terms, and most of the music is danceable. If you are truly a connoisseur of world music, try this companion CD to volume two of the revised ROUGH GUIDE TO WORLD MUSIC. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Nostalgia for Peruanos-- and Good Music for Everybody Else
Wonderful stuff here-- smoky, sexy music from coastal Peru.I lived there for three years, and the clubs sometimes featured these performers-- especially the sublime Susana Baca. She peformed in her bare feet, her face upraised as if she were communicating with angels.
