    Editorial Review

To gauge the magnitude of Israel Kamakawiwo'ole's popularity in his native Hawaii, consider this: following his death in 1997 (at age 38, attributed to his profound obesity), Kamakawiwo'ole's body lay in state in the state capitol, only the second person to receive such an honor. Kamakawiwo'ole's appeal lies in his love for prestatehood, precondominium Hawaii and the expressiveness of his gently passionate voice, which can float through higher registers with an ease that brings Johnny Mathis to mind. Several selections ("Ka Pua U'i," "White Sandy Beach of Hawai'i," the sun-kissed "La 'Elima") feature Kamakawiwo'ole in a traditional mood, using only his ukulele to adorn the charm of his native lyricism. Others, such as the Jimmy Buffett-like "Maui Hawaiian Sup'pa Man" add playful contemporary touches that suit Kamakawiwo'ole's style. Most touching are the string-backed laments that open and close the album, "Hawai'i '78 Introduction" and "Hawai'i '78," initially a reflection on his father's death, later on the passing of Hawaii's native culture. Best known is his medley "Somewhere over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful World," which played over the closing credits of the film Read more

I heard Iz's "Over the Rainbow" played at a best friends wake several years ago, as slides of my friends life in The Islands showed on a projector. It has stuck in my memory, and always will. Joy and tears come every time I think of it. A truly talent of Mother Earth, always to be remembered.

4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful music
This is wonderful to listen to.To anyone who has ever been to Hawaii, IZmakes it esay to return time after time.Close your eyes and listen and you will find yourself looking out over the vast blue waters of the Pacific.Over the Rainbow and Mona Lisa are great. This is almost as good a CD as Facing Future which I think is his best.Wonderful island music that seems to come directly from his heart.Buy it and go to Hawaii whenever you want.

5-0 out of 5 stars Makes me feel whole
Just like everyone else in these reviews, I too was "formally" introduced to Iz during a trip to Hawaii.I too was familiar with "Over the Rainbow".I had heard snippets of it many times but heard it in full on ER.On my trip to Hawaii I was listening to a CD(radio reception was poor)from some local friends and a song came on that was very calming and, in my way of thinking, very Hawaiian so I commented that I liked it and my friends said "you like Iz?" and when they mentioned "Over the rainbow" I said "i guess i do!".I picked up this cd in the hotel gift shop and could not wait to get home and listen to it and immediately was put back to Hawaii.I cannot choose a favorite song because they are all beautiful.I know the steel guitar is what is traditionally expected by mainland folks but this in my humble opinion is Hawaiian music.A calming voice, the ukulele, the beautiful Hawaiian language and i also like that the mike was just left on to catch all that Iz is in the beginning and ending of some songs "d'you call my wife?" comes to mind.I was also heartbroken to find out he was gone, but I'm thrilled to have a piece of him in this cd.I'm going to get a little DEEP now----I feel like I found a missing piece of myself when i visited Hawaii and this cd reminds me of that, but i digress.Honestly though, IZ HAS RUINED ME TO ALL OTHER TYPES OF HAWAIIAN MUSIC(except some songs by Danny Couch, whoever performed the songs in the beginning of Lilo & Stitch, and a song about a chirping/singing frog).

1-0 out of 5 stars Major Disappointmentfrom The Mountain Apple Company
The music is terrific. However, the music will ONLY play in an old-fashioned CD Player with the CD mounted in it. The music will NOT PLAY (the files cannot even be found!) on a PC or MP3 player. (I had to go sit in my car to listen to it!!!)

    Editorial Review

A lonely Westerner in Nashville, Marty Robbins salved his soul by cutting an album (in one afternoon) of mostly self-composed cowboy ballads. One of them was a four-and-a-half-minute epic, "El Paso," that broke every rule of Top 40 programming to become a No. 1 pop and country hit in 1960. Robbins was arguably the most surefooted and accomplished singer in all country music, and that was never more obvious than on these Western ballads performed to often breathtaking perfection with a very small group and a vocal trio. Other titles include "Big Iron" (also a Top 30 hit), "Running Gun," and Western classics like "Cool Water," "Billy the Kid," and "The Strawberry Roan." Three extra tracks flesh out the 1999 release, including "Saddle Tramp" (the B-side of "Big Iron") and "The Hanging Tree" (title song from the 1959 Gary Cooper Western). Read more

I was thinking this CD would be one of those that I like despite the cheesiness; but it's not cheesy. It's sincerely cool.Marty Robbins makes an even cooler cowboy than even Bob Dylan or Jerry Garcia. And the recording sounds better than most anything else from the 1950s.

5-0 out of 5 stars IZ
We discovered Iz while in Hawaii this past January. We have purchased all 6 of his CD's and all three of his DVD's. He has a beautiful voice, sense of humor, and love of his heritage and Hawaii. I just wish he was still with us to share himself. He is singing to God now and what a beautiful sound that must be. Thanks Iz for giving us your love and appreciation of Hawaii and what it means to the Hawaiian people.
5-0 out of 5 stars I'd say by far his best album.
Though all of his albums are recommended, no Israel Kamakawiwo'ole collection is complete without "In Dis Life." This album, I believe, is his best ever, despite the fact that it doesn't have his "Over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful World" medley on it. If you are looking for that particular song buy "Facing Future."

I have lived most of my life in Hawaii, and have gotten to known the Hawaiian culture and music,my children are Hawaiian and have been blessed to been brought up with this man's music.Braddah Iz will always be apart of the Hawaiian aina, and culture and his music is still listened too this day........ 1-0 out of 5 stars Not pono
This CD is horrible!Whoever the mystery person(s) are, they need to never think of making a CD again. This DVD is some Japanese hack trying to sing Iz sons.Boy was I ever duped.I thought this was officially sanctioned by the Kamakawiwo`ole family, but it is not.It is not sanctioned by Mountain Apple Records. The Kamakawiwo`ole family gets nothing from this. The songwriters get nothing from this. The people who buy it get nothing but ripped off.For instance, the beautiful song Kaleohano, which was written by Louis "Moon" Kauakahi. It is not only hacked up here, but the CD says it was written by "unknown", which means Moon is getting nothing out of this.Oh my goodness, if you heard how they factured "Henehene Kou Aka".They didn't even try to learn the Hawaiian words and therefore just mumbled a bunch of noise. Please do not waste your money on this. This is not a tribute to Iz, it is a travesty.I gave it one star, because I cannot put zero stars. Please do not buy this. Please write to the publisher and tell them they should go to jail. ... Editorial Review

Marty Robbins has more greatest-hits compilations than most artists have hits. This 20-cut single-disc collection is one of the better values, with a representative selection that extends from gunfighter balladry such as "El Paso" (his 1959 chart-topper and biggest crossover success) and "Big Iron" to the calypso-tinged "Devil Woman" to his cover of Gordon Lightfoot's folkish "Ribbon of Darkness." Throughout his 30-year recording career, Robbins combined a tremulous tenor with canny commercial instincts, stretching the boundaries of country music while expanding his popular base. He was equally at home with a cowboy song ("Red River Valley"), a gospel tune ("You Gave Me a Mountain"), and a slice of Hawaiian exotica ("Aloha Oe"). Inexplicably, the album features the schmaltzy "Love Is Blue" at the expense of "A White Sport Coat (And a Pink Carnation)," a '50s pop smash that remained one of his biggest hits. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Reincarnated Cowboy
Marty Robbins believed he was a reincarnated cowboy. Many of his songs came from dreams. All 20 of these wonderful songs take you to another place and time and tell delicious stories of love and adventure.Wonderful places to go - especially if you're a true Marty Robbins fan.
4-0 out of 5 stars Mixed Emotions
You can take any given number of Marty Robbins songs and call them his greatest hits as the man had talent and versatility to spare.Certainly most of the songs on this package are exceptional but there are so many left out."A White Sport Coat (And a Pink Carnation)", perhaps his greatest crossover hit is missing in favor of Hank Williams, Sr.'s "Kaw-Liga" (done to death) and the so-so "Maria (If I Could").And the hit doesn't even appear on the follow-up album of "more greatest hits". What were they thinking?Early hits "I Couldn't Keep From Crying" and "The Story of My Life" are not here. And on it goes. You will probably enjoy most or all of the songs herein but if you can find it, it's better to go for "The Essential Marty Robbins 1951-1982" that covers some hokey early recordings before he hit his stride plus the ones named, other certified HITS and songs that were only mild hits or not hits at all but are a lot more rewarding to listen to than the less-than-blockbuster filler found here.Shop around before you buy.

4-0 out of 5 stars Most of his best.
As always, there's a few songs missing here, but for the most part, it's a great and lengthy collection of most of his best stuff. Of course it has "Big Iron", "Devil Woman", "Streets Of Laredo", and his biggest hit "El Paso". I also like "Love Is Blue", and his version of "Ribbon Of Darkness". If I didn't get this album, I'd probably get one of his more western collections, like "No.1 Cowboy" or "Gunfighter Ballads & Trail Songs". Overall, if you're a fan of Johnny or Willie, you'll be a fan of Marty as well. ... Read more

Better known among his fans as "Iz," Israel Kamakawiwo'ole was a phenomenon in the Hawai'ian Islands totally below Mainland radar. So important was Iz's singing to Native Hawa'ians and Hawai'i residents alike that Governor Ben Cayetano declared a statewide day of mourning when Iz passed away in 1997--this despite his controversial Hawai'i-sovereignty politics. After two outstanding IZ albums (Facing Future and Alone in IZ World), this was my third purchase. What a disappointment. This is just not as good as his other albums. For the man who has a singing voice of an angel, this was a shock. Please note too that the version of Over the Rainbow and Wonderful World is not the one you hear on his other albums and is not nearly as good. There are a few nice songs on this album, but not a good first IZ album.

Odd that Israel Kamakawiwo'ole (formerly a member of Hawaiian Renaissance band, the Makaha Sons of Niihau, and outspoken vocalist in the Hawaiian Sovereignty movement) would hook up with John DeMello, the son of Hawaiian music's whitest bandleader -- Jack DeMello (the latter of whom orchestrated ultra easy listening records in the '60s). Putting that aside, this album is really hit or miss for me.

    Editorial Review

Hawaiian slack-key guitar began evolving in the 1830s, when Spanish and Mexican cowboys brought guitars to the cattle ranches of the Big Island. It became a recognizable style around the turn of the century. The term refers to the practice of slacking some strings from standard tunings to create open tunings; the thumb provides the bass line while the other fingers play melody and improvise. It might thus remind some listeners of the fingerpicking of a country master like Doc Watson, but the style has a wind-blown, wide-open quality all its own. Traditionally an accompanying instrument in a group setting, slack key has recently moved out front, and this all-instrumentals CD shows why. From the light touch of Moses Kahumoku or Leonard Kwan to the bluesiness of George Keo or Ray Kane to the pop feel of Keola Beamer, it offers the best possible introduction to the music. --Read more

On May 15th, 2006, I finally did (!), and the experience was even better than I had anticipated. What I did not anticipate, however, was how beautiful Hawa'iian music is.While driving around the island of Oahu (one of the more popular islands of Hawa'ii) and soaking in the sights, I would just listen to the radio and hum to the music.

IZ's voice is well known to many from his background music on a television commercial for a toy company. He makes everything he sings his own, no matter the genre, the era.He sings traditional (pre-statehood) Hawaiian music with a vibrance that reflects his love of the islands and the early way of island life which he worked to promote. He sings popular standards adding his own soaring improvisations, his own interpretations, revealing music we never knew was there.Buy this recording.Buy all his recordings, as I have.Listen to them all by yourself, then listen to them with your closest friends. They are deeply-felt, deeply-personal works of music that have touched me and broadened my vision of what good music can be.

3-0 out of 5 stars Magical
I love this man's music and spirit, however, this was not my very favorite of all his albums. I loved "Facing Future" the very most. But there is not a time or an album that you cannot be extremely moved by Iz's music and soul and love of his Hawaii.

In the beginning of the movie Contact, our planet earth is shown wildly spinning through space, expelling out transmissions of television and radio. The feeling is that we are representing ourselves to possible listeners from beyond. It's a fascinating thought, and more than a little embarrassing if you think about it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Enough to Satisfy
Just as people called Johnny Cash the "Man in Black" (as to how he usually dressed) and he wrote a song by that name and George Jones was "No Show" Jones (for missing shows) and wrote a song also, Marty Robbins was referred to in a review long ago as the "Cowboy in the Continental Suit" and wrote the song.It was not a spectacular hit. It's included here. Between the two El Paso songs was the middle of the story ("Feleena, the Girl From El Paso"). It's left out here; it was not a big hit but we learned she DID love only that cowboy in El Paso.Marty sings "Red River Valley" as well as it's ever been sung (nobody is sure who wrote it).Two songs written by a man Marty admired, Bob Nolan of the Sons of the Pioneers, are included.("Cool Water", "Tumbling Tumbleweeds").There are also two by Victor Young who wrote movie themes from the early 1930s to 1956, "Strawberry Roan" (previously done by Gene Autry) and "Streets of Laredo".With that history and Marty Robbins doing the vocals, a Western fan can't go wrong. Five stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent introduction to Marty's western material
The other reviews have stated what this exactly is:A compilation of 20 of Marty's classic western songs.William Fairchild, the deal with El Paso being edited is that's what's on the stereo album master which is the source Gusto/TeeVee used for this track rather than the mono 45rpm master which has the additional verse. If you would have bought the Legacy/American Milestones series remaster of Gunfighter Ballads and Trail Songs or the Bear Family Under Western Skies boxed set, you would have known this already.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good, but incomplete :-(((
I love Marty Robbins and all the music on this CD, but was VERY disappointed to discover that an entire verse had been omitted from his all-time greatest cowboy outlaw song "El Paso."In case you don't have a photographic music memory, the missing verse is right after he shoots the cowboy. Here is what is missing:Read more

This cd would be worth buying even if it only had one song on it - the version of "Pu'u Anahulu" with Martin Pahinui on vocals.I get chicken skin just listening to this song and how much he sounds like his father!Of course I love Gabby's version but always wondered what it would sound like without the cheesy strings; this is it.Unlike one other reviewer, I love the vocals.

This album won a Grammy in February 2006! And diservedly so...
2-0 out of 5 stars Please, more slack key without vocals!!!
That's my call to record execs, or George Winston, or whoever, if they ever read these. I bought volume one, absolutely thrilled that finally, after 40 years of searching, I'd finally found slack key without singing. I don't hate the vocals, and the vocals on this CD are less annoying than a whole lot of the vocals I've heard in Hawaiian music (yes, I grew up there, and have gone back every year for the last 30 years, and I've heard a whole lot of Hawaiian music that I didn't exactly ask for.) I love finger-picked ukulele (NOT strummed), and I love the cheesy steel guitar, but if I never hear another vocal, it'll be too soon. So anyway: is everyone who ever published Hawaiian music confident that people like and expect vocals? I see other reviews here that could do without the vocals. I hereby swear that if Dancing Cat (or anybody) ever does another collection anywhere near as good as Vol. 1, without vocals, I will instantly buy it at a premium price. I promise! ... Read more

Great easy listening music with the sound of birds and the tropics--puts you in the relax mode.

5-0 out of 5 stars QUIET VILLAGE MARKS MARTIN DENNY
Perhaps what he's best known for, Quiet Village is an alltime classic marking the exotic islands fad of the fifties. At this time "Islands" tropical food restaurants sprang up with rocks, bamboo, streams and tropical prints with bird calls and Martin Denny music.Denny and Lyman surely made their mark of the enchanted islands. This was post-war America when people needed that lift--relaxation into peace was MD's tropical island gift.

5-0 out of 5 stars Break from the routine!
We all love this album, a refreshing change from our usual choices. The arrangements are imaginative and some of them make you smile (especially the exotic bird noises!) Of course I'm old enough to remember when the Quiet Village song was a hit but my kids all like it too. In fact I've been asked to order it for them. If you're in the mood for an alternative, this is an excellent choice. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not strong enough-this compilation is decaf
If this album is like coffee,it's decaf. It lacks the punch to keep one awake for an early morning drive.I'd be asleep at the wheel.
4-0 out of 5 stars Chill out with a cup of coffee ora Mojito......
Good Putumayo CD.Several very good tracks on this CD. 'Guajira Bonita' is fantastic, and reminds me of my trip to Peru hiking the Inca trail. Tracks 2, 3 are good as well, and then proceed to the wonderful Susana Baca with her bold, beautiful voice on 'Maria Lando'. 'Below the Bassline' is a wonderfully mellow Reggae sounding instrumental track that brings me back to all carribbean trips. 'Dilema' reminds me of my salsa adventure to Cuba, and 'Esa Noche' is a very good instrumental track with fantastic guitar that makes me yearn for returning to Mexico City or Oaxaca. Track 9, 10 are good as well. 'Este Son' will help you chill out with your cup of coffee. Highly recommend this CD if you enjoy Latin music, as well as international music. The pamphlet submitted with the CD about the artists is informtive and only adds to the enjoyment of the CD. A Putumayo Must!

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome for KIDS! Puts them to sleep!
I listened to this music (my daughter is half Hawaiian) when my daughter was a baby ten years ago and it would always soothe her and put her to sleep because it's so soothing and beautiful. Now, my son, when he teeths he is inconsolible! He will not stop for a bottle, to be rocked, sang to, put down in his bed, etc. But I play this, and not even 3 seconds later, he is on his way to la la land. It is wonderful. I recommend it to any parent! Or anyone who wants to de-stress.

I bought this CD on Maui, listened to it while we were there, brought it home and listened to it and, thanks to the included lyrics, learned the words to all the songs.I don't speak much Hawaiian, but I now can sing some songs in Hawaiian.Keali'i Reichel has a wonderful voice, great talent, a love for Hawaiian traditions and his legacy, and I can feel the Spirit of Aloha as he sings the songs on this CD. ... Why is it that island cultures so often create the most magical, deeply individual sounds? Is it because they are usually miles away from corrupting outside influences? Perhaps it is due to the fact that they are forced to create music from their own inner resources. The powerful voices of Jamaican reggae, Cuban rumba, and Puerto Rican salsa have been joined on the world stage by Cape Verdean Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good, not great, but still fun
"Danca ma mi Criola" is a bouncy love song."Me ki sa oule" is a lilting song of longing."Bomba traigo yo" is joyfully infectious. The BEST songs are "Falso Testemunho" from Cape Verde&"Veinte anos" from Cuba. Both these songs are about unrequited love&betrayal. For popular songs, they are moving."Sonegaly" is an enchanting song from Madagascar.Tarika hasn't been as good since."E I Taurua"&"Olinda Road" are magical songs from Tahiti&Hawaii.
4-0 out of 5 stars One of the best in this series
My whole family loves this CD.My 2 year old daughter dances up a storm and my 4 year old son puts on his jolly roger do-rag and swashbuckles about.A little mellower and less adventurous, musically, than similar compilations, but the quality is higher throughout.

3-0 out of 5 stars Incomplete
Incomplete. What else can I say? This is a good mix, and a good cd, but the title is Islands. So, why not throw something a little more exotic into the mix? Cuba and Hawaii are predictable, but what about music from the Azores? What about the Madeira Islands? A little Luis Bettencourt, some Jose Medeiros, or Katia Guerreiro and this cd would have been a whole lot better!!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Sure cure for insomnia
Found this at a local library around 20 years ago, bought a copy and after quite literally about 10,000 rotations it is finally making some clicking noises towards the end and waking me up. I didn't think you could wear-out a cd there being no surface contact with the lasar and all, but the noise is there nonetheless so I guess you can. I'm sure I could probably sleep without this thing but at this point it is so ingrained into my subconsious that it is like audible crack. The delicate decrecendo of the rain over an hour-long period, balanced by the soft chirpings of birds and crickets will lull you into oblivion.

5-0 out of 5 stars Recommended For Sleeping
I love this CD. My wife and I have kept it playing on repeat, every night, for the past 4 years. If you like rain, I definitely recommend it.
3-0 out of 5 stars Rain with crickets and birds
As one reviewer said this rain CD has the sounds of crickets and birds towards the end. If you are looking for only the soothing sound of rain with no birds, crickets, thunder or other annoying things, I recommend "Sounds of the Earth: Rain in the Country".The "Rain in the Country" CD is a clear recording of a steady rainshower. It is so relaxing that I bought 3 copies of it just in case they ever stop selling it. ... Read more
