Editorial Review

To gauge the magnitude of Israel Kamakawiwo'ole's popularity in his native Hawaii, consider this: following his death in 1997 (at age 38, attributed to his profound obesity), Kamakawiwo'ole's body lay in state in the state capitol, only the second person to receive such an honor. Kamakawiwo'ole's appeal lies in his love for prestatehood, precondominium Hawaii and the expressiveness of his gently passionate voice, which can float through higher registers with an ease that brings Johnny Mathis to mind. Several selections ("Ka Pua U'i," "White Sandy Beach of Hawai'i," the sun-kissed "La 'Elima") feature Kamakawiwo'ole in a traditional mood, using only his ukulele to adorn the charm of his native lyricism. Others, such as the Jimmy Buffett-like "Maui Hawaiian Sup'pa Man" add playful contemporary touches that suit Kamakawiwo'ole's style. Most touching are the string-backed laments that open and close the album, "Hawai'i '78 Introduction" and "Hawai'i '78," initially a reflection on his father's death, later on the passing of Hawaii's native culture. Best known is his medley "Somewhere over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful World," which played over the closing credits of the film Read more

I heard Iz's "Over the Rainbow" played at a best friends wake several years ago, as slides of my friends life in The Islands showed on a projector. It has stuck in my memory, and always will. Joy and tears come every time I think of it. A truly talent of Mother Earth, always to be remembered.

4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful music
This is wonderful to listen to.To anyone who has ever been to Hawaii, IZmakes it esay to return time after time.Close your eyes and listen and you will find yourself looking out over the vast blue waters of the Pacific.Over the Rainbow and Mona Lisa are great. This is almost as good a CD as Facing Future which I think is his best.Wonderful island music that seems to come directly from his heart.Buy it and go to Hawaii whenever you want.

5-0 out of 5 stars Makes me feel whole
Just like everyone else in these reviews, I too was "formally" introduced to Iz during a trip to Hawaii.I too was familiar with "Over the Rainbow".I had heard snippets of it many times but heard it in full on ER.On my trip to Hawaii I was listening to a CD(radio reception was poor)from some local friends and a song came on that was very calming and, in my way of thinking, very Hawaiian so I commented that I liked it and my friends said "you like Iz?" and when they mentioned "Over the rainbow" I said "i guess i do!".I picked up this cd in the hotel gift shop and could not wait to get home and listen to it and immediately was put back to Hawaii.I cannot choose a favorite song because they are all beautiful.I know the steel guitar is what is traditionally expected by mainland folks but this in my humble opinion is Hawaiian music.A calming voice, the ukulele, the beautiful Hawaiian language and i also like that the mike was just left on to catch all that Iz is in the beginning and ending of some songs "d'you call my wife?" comes to mind.I was also heartbroken to find out he was gone, but I'm thrilled to have a piece of him in this cd.I'm going to get a little DEEP now----I feel like I found a missing piece of myself when i visited Hawaii and this cd reminds me of that, but i digress.Honestly though, IZ HAS RUINED ME TO ALL OTHER TYPES OF HAWAIIAN MUSIC(except some songs by Danny Couch, whoever performed the songs in the beginning of Lilo & Stitch, and a song about a chirping/singing frog).

1-0 out of 5 stars Major Disappointmentfrom The Mountain Apple Company
The music is terrific. However, the music will ONLY play in an old-fashioned CD Player with the CD mounted in it. The music will NOT PLAY (the files cannot even be found!) on a PC or MP3 player. (I had to go sit in my car to listen to it!!!)

5-0 out of 5 stars Heat... by way of the cool.
I bought their first album, La Revancha del Tango, on a whim when my favorite D.C. haunt, Olssons Books & Records, was playing them over the store's speakers. The store's music buyer, Werner, was always good at recommending music from classic blues to "electronica" and Revancha was haunting. It is *still* growing on me.While I was excited to learn about the new album, I was also a bit wary as Revancha was so very, very good.I am glad to say that Lunatico actually bests the first album. I am fond of thinking of music as venues so consider "Amor Porteño" a quietly intense tango bar, "Differente" its wildly exhilarating opposite, "Notas" your private living room's dance floor (you're embarrassed by how it makes you want to move), and "Celos" that first date cafe with the man you've been dreaming of... And kudos to them for their powerfully poignant "Paris, Texas" with its pounding drums and wrenching piano and accordion sounds. HIGHLY recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars SF under a groove..new dance music and beyond
Gotan Project is a nice example of good instrumentation in dance music right now. I bought this album because I love a good mix of tango fusion, electronica, and dance. The production is rich and writing is quite good and with interesting melodies from South America with that French touch electronica sound.

5-0 out of 5 stars In passing he gave us his best.!
Ali Farke Toure is to African music and blues what The Beatles are to Rock and Roll, what Mario Lanza is to Opera (sorry pavarotti), what Vicente Fernandez is to mexico. I love his music and have almost all his albums. I have read many opinions wherin people mention what album or albums(s) are his best. I will tell this, as amazing as some of his previous works are, none are better than this! If you like or love anything Ali Farke Toure has ever done, you need this disc.

5-0 out of 5 stars Farewell, Brave Friend
One of the incredible tragedies in Music this year is the passing of Ali Farka Toure. It is impossible to exagerate his importance to African, Malian, Blues, World musics. He is as seminal figure as anyone in any discipline. Last year he recorded the mystically beautiful IN THE HEART OF THE MOONwith Toumani Diabete, and this record as well as Diabete's magical SYMMETRY ORCHESTRA recording just out were recorded nearly simultaneously in the same hotel as the MOON sessions.
5-0 out of 5 stars More than a summation of a career
I agree with the earlier reviewers' 5-star ratings, but for slightly different reasons.Especially if one compares it to Niafunke (1999), Toure's "back to his roots" album, Savane both retains the earlier album's live, desert-dry quality and pushes these centuries-old song structures in intriguing new directions--but doing so without altering those structures.Certain songs, such as "Erdi" and "Ledi Coumbe," sound as though they could be a staking out of new possibilities for Malian music while remaining true to its firm, resiliant foundations.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great songs about the true human spirit, all around the world.
I encourage everyone to listen to this album. Everyone. It's not only a collection of beautiful songs, sung by beuatiful voices -- it's also a reminder of what it is to be human: to love and care, unconditionally. Everywhere on our precious planet, parents love their sons and daughters. This album reflects that, in a careful mix between the traditional and the modern.
5-0 out of 5 stars This is not exploitative - it's a collaboration!
Some of the people writing here don't seem to understand the concept of this album. The producer recorded the original vocals and then brought in guest artists and blended the two together in a way that enhances the original vocals and their messages. The original vocalists knew and approved of every step of the process and were very happy to share their culture with the other singers in this way! This is NOT a "world" music album - it's something altogether new and different.

5-0 out of 5 stars So unusual and soothing/ A spritual and political statement
I've really enjoyed this CD.It's not very often that children's lullabies can transcend their traditional purpose in order to make a statement about the commonality of human experience. The CD is an appeal to peace, rocking the listener gentley into a greater understanding of those who westerners so often typify as "the other."These songs speak of the often ineffable ties that bind mothers to their children across cultures, religions, and races. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars 1980's with some 60s and 70s sounds
Paul Simon's solo work is nothing to overlook. This is an album full of some of his 80s hits. "Graceland" and "Diamonds on the Souls of Her Shoes" and "You Can Call Me Al" are popular songs that many people would know if they heard them. The Everly Brother's sing backup on Graceland and help Simon to harmonize. A few of the songs never became popular but are as good as the ones that did. A classic album for any Simon and Garfunkel fan and for anyone who likes easy listening/rock music.

5-0 out of 5 stars 20 years later, still a classic
Having just purchased Simon's excellent new release SURPRISE, I felt compelled to compare his new work with his past works. To me the ruler to which one measures a Paul Simon album is the 1986 album, GRACELAND.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not what I was Expecting
When I heard that Al Di Meola was going to do an electric record, I was ecstatically awaiting its release.Hoping that Al would return to his earlier works like Land of the Midnight Sun,Tour de Force Live and Elegant Gypsy.Instead what Al made was an electric cd full of lush melodies, complex chord arrangements. This is more like what he has been making over the last decade. Not great as in comparision to his earlier works but definitely not bad. This cd is for his fans.I being one of them wish he would put a little more rock in it as he did with his earlier cds.You want find a cut like "RACE WITH THE DEVIL ON THE SPANISH HIGHWAY " here.

4-0 out of 5 stars Close to His Best
I've been listening to Al since his days with the Return to Forever. During the 70s and 80s I purchased all of Als CDs and his classic Elegant Gypsy persisted as my favorite. In the 90s, Orange and Blue captured my imagination and to this day is my favorite. I've listened with interest to his recent Vocal Rendevous and Cosmopolitan Life. For those not familiar with those two albums Al assumed the role of pop session musician, and in my view, that is not necessarily a bad thing. That brings us to Consequence of Chaos. Longtime listeners will have cause to rejoice. Parts of COC remind me of Kiss My Axe, and at other times the more subtle Orange and Blue. Al is a guitar viruoso, a fact not evident on his last two releases. On COC, we are again blessed with and get to hear his chops. The writing and arranging on COC are complex which makes it very interesting yet COC maintains it's accessability. I suspect COC will find a wide audience, satisfying longtime die hard fans and fans of quality music in general. This is a solid four and 1/2 stars.
5-0 out of 5 stars A first tier c.d. from a musician with few peers
Last night my wife and I were treated to a remarkable performance from the Al di Meola Project. This c.d. was covered extensively in addition to music from virtually every phase of his varied career from electric fusion to World Sinfonia and everything in between.Consequence of Chaos is wonderfully eclectic and his best in many years.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gut Wrenching Chillers, All of 'Em.
I loved Wes Anderson's The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou.I saw the movie three times while it was in theaters and still could not get enough.Seu Jorge's character brought so much to the movie and I was a little disappointed that the soundtrack did not have all of his versions of our beloved David Bowie. The Bowie songs are great. The Jorge songs are great.I could listen to either one for hours on end and still not get sick of hearing them.Knowing the Bowie versions well also is a thrill when you hear this album because it surprises your ears with unexpected turns in tone and acoustic sounds.A definite necessity for any beach BBQ, I highly recommend this album.

5-0 out of 5 stars A BEAUTIFUL SOUNDTRACK: BELONGS IN EVERY COLLECTION!
The beautifully joyful and hauntingly sad sounds of this wonderful soundtrack belong in every music lover's collection. There isn't a track on this CD that I think is mediocre. They're all great! Yann Tiersen is a multi-talented musician, and when I first saw Amelie a few years ago, it was the music that captivated me to the film.
5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have --- one of the best EVER!
This soundtrack will take you right back to the movie Amelie but, even if you've not seen the movie, it is a great CD to have on hand. The songs are all so very French but subtle yet intense. This is great dinner party music or rainy day, sitting at home, reading a book music. This CD is a must-have and one that you will never get tired of.It definitely does the movie justice.

5-0 out of 5 stars i want to be a great pianist because of this
I don't know how to describe the music of this soundtrack... it's just too... I can't even find the right adjective. But the point here is, I love the soundtrack so much. I love how the sounds fit into the film just right, and how it touches me each time I hear the tracks playing. What I love the most is La Valse D'Amelie (piano version) because of its melancholic sound that surely has a great impact on listeners. Actually, this track is one of the major reasons why I wanted to learn how to play the piano. The other tracks are also great, because they make you feel like you have nothing to worry about, thus bringing comfort to your busy mind.

Editorial Review

Though the music of Canadian fiddler Natalie MacMaster remains rooted in her native Cape Breton, it continues to branch in some surprising directions. No purist, MacMaster employs an aggressive guitar and rhythm section, along with mini-Moog and electric pipes on "Matt & Nat's," while the jazzy intro to the "Flea as a Bird" medley seems to channel the style of Stephane Grappelli. Guest vocalist Michael McDonald gives the traditional "Danny Boy" a soulful, somber twist, and "Farewell to Peter" offers an instrumental elegy to Peter Jennings, MacMaster's late friend and countryman. Yet uptempo instrumentals dominate, as the opening "Volcanic Jig" builds to an eruption worthy of its title, "David's Jig" employs her step dancing as percussion, and her flamboyant virtuosity through much of the music finds her rarely settling for one note where she can squeeze in three or four. What an awesome CD!"Volcanic Jig" and "Matt and Nat's" are just plain fun. "David's Jig" cleverly employs Natalie's foot dancing expertise. Great to hear the traditional "Danny Boy" as well.Natalie and her band are truly inspiring.I may move to Nova Scotia. HIGHLY recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!
Natalie continues to amaze. Her ability to craft music with the fiddle front-and-center is a gift.
5-0 out of 5 stars One of her strongest releases to date!
Cape Breton, what a lovely place it must be to produce such captivating music year after year. Yours Truly is an example of ever-increasing skill and talent. One of my personal favorites here is Matt & Nat's, a masterful combination of Natalie and Ashley MacIsaac. Truly inspiring and sensational.

Editorial Review

Shania Twain--recluse, happily married, mother of one--has sold more than 40 million albums with flirty, hook-laden, beat-heavy, country-tinged pop that has all the subtlety of a musical wet T-shirt contest, yet is as irresistible as Swiss chocolate and Pringles. There are a few heartfelt, moon-in-June love ballads on this generous and long-awaited 20-song collection, which includes three new songs along with all the predictable chart-toppers and near-chart-toppers. But it's the mostly nonstop, uptempo booty-shakers--too often with garish overproduction and vapid lyrics--that, for the unconverted, tend to run together after a while. No doubt, this relentlessly upbeat retrospective will keep Twain's millions of fans jumping up and down on their sofas. Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Only some songs are good
I like Shania Twain's songs. This is the second CD of hers that I bought. Of the 21 songs here, 9 are real hits, which I liked. The others are all just ok. So I figure it was better to get the 9 I liked from itunes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Shania's Greatest Hits
I've listened to a lot of greatest hits albums, and I must say this is one of my favorite in all of country music. The album includes 20 of Shania's best songs. One song, Party For Two, has two versions, a version with Mark McGrath and a version with Billy Currington. What I like most about this album is that you get so much in one collection. You get just about all the original chart-toppers, a few popular favorites, and three new (for the time of this album) songs.
4-0 out of 5 stars Some of the Funnest Music Out There!!
Shania Twain's songs and the lyrics 2 them can be very silly at times (My hair went flat-man, I hate that etc. from Honey, I'm Home) yet they r very catchy and fun 2 listen 2.The slower songs on here are also good 2.If u like catchy country/pop music, then you'll love this.If u can't buy the whole album at a store or on iTunes (if u have an iPod), then I recommend u download these songs on iTunes: Up!, Man! I Feel Like A Women!, That Don't Impress Me Much, You're Still the One, Don't Be Stupid (You Know I Love You), and Love Gets Me Every Time. This is especially a good album 2 listen 2 if you're in a bad mood and want something that will cheer u up! :) ... Editorial Review

The voice of Edith Piaf carries with it perhaps more national identity than that of any other recorded artist in the world. Tiny, frail, and tragic in her life, Piaf brought French identity to the rest of the world in a way that was understandable to all. Known as "the Little Sparrow" in her country, her voice was strong, bold, and passionate, even as she grew more infirm. The archetypical torch singer, she had massive popular success with songs like "Milord," "Non, Je Ne Regrette Rien," and "La Vie, L'Amour," included here with 18 other classics. While this is a great compilation of some of her best material, the complete lack of enclosed notes or biographical material may frustrate those not familiar with her fascinating career. However, the work of one of the most original songbirds of all time speaks loud and clear for itself. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars So good it is sometimes hard to play.
I have had this as a CD about 10 years, and had tapes previously, and lps previous. This and most other Piaf recordings I have owned is so good that it is sometimes hard to play. You are afraid you will never get it out of the CD player or hear anything else because it is so wonderful. This is a good introduction to Piaf's large body of work and to French songs of the middle of the 20th Century.
5-0 out of 5 stars Piaf Pleases!
The music from this CD takes me back to when I listened to Edith in the 1960's while stationed in Germany. The quality if grand. The service in purchasing the CD was easy andwithout a hitch. Thank you very much.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant Album by a World Music Superstar
Eva Contro Eva is a beautiful, mature work by the Sicilian rock singer-songwriter Consoli. I love her rock-oriented CDs, including "Felice e Confusa," "Mediamente Isterica," and "L'Eccezione." But "Eva" represents a new direction that should make her the world music superstar she deserves to be. Carmen and her band trade in the amplification for a mainly acoustic sound, featuring guitars, mandolins, bouzoukis, violins, and even a string quartet. Low-key brass and woodwinds appear on several tracks. Percussion, whether traps or African and Arab hand drums, is restrained. One track, "Maria Catena," features the friscaletto, a Sicilian wood flute. It's a lush, gorgeous sound, and the music yields more pleasure with each listening. Some of Consoli's fans have been disappointed that she didn't make another rock record, but it's hard to argue with the brilliant effort she's come up with. Her lyric writing is richer, more subtle, more amazing than ever, full of insight, irony, and compassion. I love the entire album, but some tracks are particular standouts: "Sulle Rive di Morfeo" (On Morpheus' Riverbanks), "Maria Catena," "Tuttu su Eva" (All About Eve, and yes, it was influenced by the classic Bette Davis movie), "Il Pendio di Abbandono," "Madre Terra," and "Piccolo Cesare."Consoli just finished a US tour to promote the CD. I saw her twice in Manhattan, first during a press event at the Istituto Italiano di Cultura, where she talked and played solo versions of her new songs, and then a few days later, at Joe's Pub, where she and her excellent band played a very strong set that included "Eva" songs and older favorites like "Parole di Burro" and "Per niente Stanca." Hopefully the fact that "Eva Contro Eva" has been released in the US by Universal Latino will win greater exposure for this terrific artist.

No doubt this is the best album recorded by Carmen Consoli so far. The aggressive anger of "Mediamente isterica" doesn't belong to this cd. No screams, no aggressivity. On the contrary she gives voice to feelings like compassion and benevolence. In "Eva contro Eva" you find a singer and a woman who wants to be mature and aware, willing to reflect about the customs of Italian society, surely a part of it. And by reading the present scale of values such society seems to impoverish day by day. Instead of talking about herself directly as she has often done in the previous albums (we could find only a few exceptions), Carmen reinvents herself as a storyteller. She introduces different characters, often defeated by a society where slander and lack of human values reign, and give them a story and a dignity. Each one of these characters is somehow lost, victim of prejudices, victim of social expectations. Every story has its glory, I would say. Don't be scared of this new path followed by Carmen Consoli. It is likely that some of the fans will be distracted and disappointed by the lack of electric guitars but, in my opinion, this choice is a need required by these twelve songs. Simply listen without prejudice. "Eva contro Eva" is an acoustic album where Carmen and her band try to recover what musically was getting lost with the passing of time. Therefore you can hear the sound of different instruments belonging to the precious Sicilian culture mixed together to instruments coming from Africa and from Eastern Europe. Such soundtrack gives the album a romantic and ancient colour, as well as turning over the pages of a book of old photographs yellowed with age. Carmen Consoli doesn't pretend she is an American rocker in these songs. Proudly she tells her background, her roots. Lyrics are very important to seize what this songstress intends to communicate through this album and that's why I advise you to buy the internation version of it as you may find the translations into English and French in the booklet. Last but not least, "Eva contro Eva" includes a couple of collaborations with Angelique Kidjo (dueting with Carmen in "Madre Terra") and with Goran Bregovic (his is the music written for "Il pendio dell'abbandono"). Okay, Carmen doesn't scream in this album but she's ready to fight through her words. How? By declaring this society. ... Read more

Beautiful music, but many of the selections are already on the original Celtic Woman.Check carefully to see if it is worth it to you to buy this additional album. If you do, sit back and enjoy pure magic!

3-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful voice? With all of the studio enhancement, how can you tell?
Honestly folks --- I can't be the only one that notices the tinny, electronic overtones that come from excessive studio tinkerings with the human voice.Maybe Chloe Agnew has a nice voice, maybe not --- the powers that be have decided to take no chances & have instead presented the public with something hopelessly artificial.Personally, I prefer a voice with more texture to it.
5-0 out of 5 stars Cloud Nine
This CD is totally amazing! Every time I hear the first song, Walking inthe Air, I feel as though I've been swept off of my feet. My other favorites are Going Home, The Prayer, Starry, Starry Night, Jesu Joy of Man's Desiring, Brahms's Lullabye, One World, and Winter's Light. Sends chills up your spine, and stirrs tender feelings in the heart. Chloe's disinctive British accent is charming. I highly reccomend. Thanks, Choe, for lifting our spirits! ... Read more
