5-0 out of 5 stars Can I get a margarita with this???
I love the music. Great for dinner and it makes you want to go out dancing. So fun, creative and lively. I wish there were more out there like this one! I love "El Cuarto de Tulo" and "Candela". Even if you aren't a dancer, I dare you- try and sit still with this playing! It'll make you feel like you're on vacation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful
I watched this documentary on IFC a month ago, and while the credit were running I was on amazon ordering the CD. I have played it almost everyday. This is wonderful, even my 16 year old think its good, after I told im the backgound of the band, he was amazed. This is a must for music lovers.

5-0 out of 5 stars BUY BUY BUY!!
I had not bought one of Marc's albums in a while and the playlist looked good, so i bought it, and to my surprise ITS ONE OF MY FAV cds.
5-0 out of 5 stars Nice Collection of Marc Anthony Classics
Forget JLo, and the tabloid press, and just listen to the beauty of Marc Anthony's voice. He shines particularly on the pure hot salsa numbers. The ballads are all a little saccharine with all those violin strings, but the voice is still magic. It's a mystery why the songs in Spanish are always superior to the ones in English. Perhaps English just isn't a very romantic language. Anyhow, if you are looking for arrangements that have the big horn section power of Sinatra and the masculine voice to match, don't go buy Harry Connick Jr., give Marc Anthony a try.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love it
Although the CD is full of all song, which I'm assuming this is a tribute to LOLA, I still love it.I bought it to hear his new song.Well worth it. ... Read more

Raul Malo'svelvety tenor is warm and dirty in all the right ways. As the primary songwriterand frontman for theMavericks and as a member of all-star bandLos Super Seven, Malo'ssoulful croon has bent round the blue notes of country and spread itself thicklyyet pliantly between and on top of the polyrhythms of Latin roots music. 5-0 out of 5 stars What a great voice!
His first solo effort, sans The Mavericks, is a great debut! His rich, strong tenor carries these songs well. The title track 'Today' is a lively upbeat number about being in love. 'I Said I Love You, and 'It Takes Two To Tango' are great showcases of his voice.

It's hardly a stretch to say that Antonio Carlos Jobim--the wonderful Brazilian composer almost single-handedly responsible for all things bossa nova--influenced some of past half century's best and most insipid musics, from bossa nova jazz to elevator Muzak. Read more

This is Jobim's finest album, although Stone Flower and Tide are certainly worth checking out.The songwriting on this album is sublime, the arrangements are brilliant and the execution is flawless. The melodies are minimal, yet strikingly elegant: they are small but very effective, impressionistic tone poems, each exquisite in its own right.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bossa Nova rocks
This cd was the first of many brazilian bossa novas I've bought.I heard the Girl from Ipanema on a complilation jazz cd and was hooked then.I don't aggree w/ the above reviewers who don't like the orchestral arrangements? Are you nuts? This album is fantastic! Its actually two albums, and I love every song. I grew up listening to mostly r/b and this style is second only to that for me.
4-0 out of 5 stars A masterpiece PLUS a great album
As many reviewers have said, tracks 9-14 are worth the price of the album. These tracks are simply astonishing.I first heard three or four of them over the internet and on various mix CDs that my friends had.I was drawn to "Aquarela do Brasil" and "Disse Alguem" especially, and you could tell that it was the same session.I told myself I had to find such an album.(You see Mr. Record Company, many file sharers do go out and buy CDs!)5-0 out of 5 stars Yes, Joao Gilberto Singing
I've heard that Mr. Gilberto, being very shy and a little strange, would not go into the studio for Amoroso, so they went to his house to record and he sang and played in his pajamas. Then Claus came along and added the quite wonderful arrangements afterwards.Perhaps that explains the slight out of synch feel.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Cuban Music
This is a great example of Cuban music. There are 3 cuts on the album that have great 'feeling' and make you 'dream' of dancing with a lovely latin girl. If you happen to be dancing with a lovely latin girl, then you are all the luckier. Cuts 2, 6 and 9 are very rhythmic, and are great for 'close' dancing. Cut 9, is known in the English speaking world as "Green Eyes". I don't know the Spanish lyrics for cuts 2 and 6, but I hope they are very seductive.

5-0 out of 5 stars wonderful
I wasn't a Ry Cooder fan but I've discovered respect for him after these associations. Previous posters seem to think that Ry Cooder was the only guitarist, which would be a surprise to Manuel Galban. Ibrahim's voice is as amazing as his story. BVSC the film is basically a film of the sessions for this album. I think Ry deserves 'props' for bringing this music to a much wider audience than was expected. I'm sure people will read that as a 'whiter' audience as well. Lighten up, shake off the ghost and dance.

Editorial Review

This dynamic duo of Dominican pianist-composer Michel Camilo and Spanish flamenco guitarist Tomatito is an intricate improvisational exchange that traverses the Afro-Iberian world, from the Moorish castles of Alhambra to the azure-tinged Caribbean coasts of Havana and Santo Domingo. Camilo and Tomatito met in Spain in the early 1990s, performed together in 1997, and toured in the summer of 1999. Camilo's florid and fleet-fingered, classically trained pianism is a beautiful counterpoint to Tomatito's passionate, plectral poetry, which combines the precision of the great classical guitaristAndrés Segovia and the flair of Paco De Lucia. Together, they reinterpret the works of several Latin composers with vigor and vitality, including Consuelo Velazquez's immortal bolero/cancion, "Besame Mucho," and Luis Salinas's elegant "Aire de Tango." Camilo's "Two Much/Love Theme" and Tomatito's "La Vacilona" highlight the depth and breadth of their interplay. They reach their zenith on "Spain Intro," their incredible adapted Joaquin Rodrigo's Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A glimpse into their awesome chemistry!
I regularly go the Blue Note here in NYC and got the chance to see Michel Camilo live on this one night.I didn't expect to see what I saw! I've always known how awesome a pianist Michel Camilo is but when I saw Tomatito, I was in awe of Tomatito's technique. I was about 10 feet away from him and I couldn't figure out how he was getting all those beautiful sounds. I was so anxious to get the CD but everywhere I turned to didn't have it.When I got it, I was a little disappointed.Just a little...When I saw them live, THEY WERE 10 TIMES BETTER THAN ON THE CD, if you can imagine that! The CD doesn't do them justice but it comes pretty close.

5-0 out of 5 stars Vergatario!!
The recording quality is superb, and the artistic balance just perfect. Nobody on top of anybody.Camilo's versatility is outstanding: from tango-to rumba-to bulerias with an amazing fluidity. I wish the pair had recorded a few more tunes for this CD.But I am being selfish here.Recommended without reservations and indispensable for those who love "latin jazz". ... Read more

While Antonio Carlos Jobim is an essential figure in the music of Brazil, he also created a significant place for himself in American music as a great songwriter and a key figure in the tremendous popularity of bossa nova. Apart from his unique melodic gift, what makes Jobim's work memorable is the complexity of mood he could evoke--the touch of sadness that colors the brightest bossa nova, the irony in the midst of joy, and the mixture of delicacy and resilience in his voice and piano. He was an artist who worked primarily in pastels, but it was his sense of shadows that gave his work its most enduring qualities. Including his most famous tunes and collaborators--like "The Girl from Ipanema" with Stan Getz and Astrud Gilberto--Jobim's Read more

This 1995 tribute to the late Brazilian bossa nova master draws from the cream of the Verve/Polygram jazz catalog. Saxophonist Stan Getz, who introduced the sublimely sensual bossa nova to North American audiences in the early '60s, is joined by vocalist João Gilberto on the well-known title track and by guitarist Luiz Bonfa on the exquisite "O Morro Nao Tem Vez." Sarah Vaughan ("Corcovado"), Billy Eckstine ("Felicidade"), Wes Montgomery ("How Insensitive"), and Oscar Peterson ("Wave") also turn in classic performances from the '60s. Jobim himself offers guitar and piano accompaniment on several tracks and duets with Brazilian vocalist Elis Regina on "Aguas de Marco." Although subsequent generations of lame lounge singers have robbed bossa nova of its original mystique, in its pure form, this music is unsurpassed in conveying an intimately romantic mood with carefree sophistication. Recognizing that the holiday season really begins at Halloween (and, in some quarters, doesn't end until the Super Bowl), Vince Guaraldi and his record company have wisely assembled the hummable themes from various Charlie Brown TV specials. What we have here is the album's ability to communicate the playful irony and loopy, lovable characters that people Charles Schultz's "Peanuts" comic strip every week. Though only one actual Christmas tune is included--"Christmas Time Is Here," in both the vocal and instrumental versions--kids from ages 1 to 92 will still appreciate the "Great Pumpkin Waltz," the "Thanksgiving Theme," oddities such as "Heartburn Waltz" and "Joe Cool," and, of course, the "Charlie Brown Theme." Marc Anthony is excellent as always. The only reason I didn't give this five stars is that I was disappointed to find out that the album contains "salsa" versions of the songs played on the radio such as Ahora Quien. The version I heard on the radio is more of a ballad style as is Tu Amor me Hace Bien. While North American rap drowns in its own clichés, international artists are invigorating the genre with their own musical traditions. The Orishas, a Cuban group based in France, use Afro-Cuban religion to summon the spirit of hip-hop. Named for gods of Santeria, they came together in 1998 when members Yotuel and Ruzzo hooked up with Roldan and Flaco-Pro (a veteran of Sergeant Garcia) through a cultural exchange program between French and Cuban rappers. Collaborating with French hip-hop producer Miko Niko, they bring the attitude of Havana streets to the rest of the world, appealing to the Buena Vista Social Club crowd as well as the hip-hop heads. When Orishas released this CD I was still living in Cuba. I used to listen to these songs all day long with my friends. Then I moved to US and what can I tell you? 537 Cuba is like an anthem for me because it really tells the reality about the feelings of Cuban people and perhaps every person that lefts his country likes us. On the other hand, these guys are amazing! The mixture of rap with traditional Cuban music is something original, out of this world. I don't like hip hop music at all, but Orishas are the exception. 5-0 out of 5 stars Cuban Love
If you like anything that is Cuban related-this is the cd to buy!

5-0 out of 5 stars Putumayo is amazing
Putumayo has introduced me to so much great music! They have really good taste! They choose music you wouldn't normally hear and yet it's not too folksy- it's great to listen to. This is one of my favorite CDs by them. It cheers you up so much to listen to it and you can just imagine the bright blue sea off the coast of Cuba. In fact, this CD was so good- every song- that it got me into Cuban music and I've been delving into Cuban music ever since.

4-0 out of 5 stars Buena coleccion de son cubano

2-0 out of 5 stars Not strong enough-this compilation is decaf
If this album is like coffee,it's decaf. It lacks the punch to keep one awake for an early morning drive.I'd be asleep at the wheel.
4-0 out of 5 stars Chill out with a cup of coffee ora Mojito......
Good Putumayo CD.Several very good tracks on this CD. 'Guajira Bonita' is fantastic, and reminds me of my trip to Peru hiking the Inca trail. Tracks 2, 3 are good as well, and then proceed to the wonderful Susana Baca with her bold, beautiful voice on 'Maria Lando'. 'Below the Bassline' is a wonderfully mellow Reggae sounding instrumental track that brings me back to all carribbean trips. 'Dilema' reminds me of my salsa adventure to Cuba, and 'Esa Noche' is a very good instrumental track with fantastic guitar that makes me yearn for returning to Mexico City or Oaxaca. Track 9, 10 are good as well. 'Este Son' will help you chill out with your cup of coffee. Highly recommend this CD if you enjoy Latin music, as well as international music. The pamphlet submitted with the CD about the artists is informtive and only adds to the enjoyment of the CD. A Putumayo Must!

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent representation of this genre
Another wonderful cd from the buena vista social club.Excellent variety of fast paced and slow songs.I highly recommend this cd if you have bought any of the others.

5-0 out of 5 stars beautiful music
Very laid back CD. This CD really highlights Omara's skill as a singer, she sings with great emotion. Highly reccomended! One of the best recordings out of the "Buena Vista" series. On this recording, thankfully, Ry Cooder is not mucking about, this recording is pure Cuban soul. ... Read more

Since its 1999 breakthrough, the Cuban rap trio Orishas has been hailed as one of Latin hip-hop's true saviors. But the group's intoxicating third album, Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Magnifico
He sido fiel seguidora del trabajo de Orishas.Este es definitivamente mi album favorito ... distinto!
5-0 out of 5 stars Sensacional!!!!
This album makes my heart shake!!! I can feel it in my blood! I have always been a fan of Orishas (since A lo Cubano), and so far I consider this album a huge growth of the trio, The combination of Hip-Hop and Cuban, old time Cuban, latin flavor and modern sounds is sensational. There is nothing better that music that can be felt in the stomach, in the soul... The kind of music you can turn on as loud as you can and still sounds perfect! Love the voice colors, and the lyrics, that are indeed very sentimental when it comes to understanding just a tiny bit of the Cuban situation, their lifestyle, their swing and the Cuban Groove. This is a wonderful tribute to their culture because it has added on to it in a very positive modern way.
5-0 out of 5 stars Knock-out effort
These guys defy easy categorization.Yeah, they're hip-hop, but they're also fluid and the harmonies and instrumentation are gorgeous. And their political chops are definitely on target. They remind me of a more sophisticated Ozomatli, which aint a bad thing!Just goes to show...the French can gripe all they want about immigrants, but if musicians like Orishas weren't residing in Paris, the French would still be stuck with the worst music on the planet!I love every song on this CD, and I don't say that very often.Give it a try! ...
