5-0 out of 5 stars Great songs about the true human spirit, all around the world.
I encourage everyone to listen to this album. Everyone. It's not only a collection of beautiful songs, sung by beuatiful voices -- it's also a reminder of what it is to be human: to love and care, unconditionally. Everywhere on our precious planet, parents love their sons and daughters. This album reflects that, in a careful mix between the traditional and the modern.
5-0 out of 5 stars This is not exploitative - it's a collaboration!
Some of the people writing here don't seem to understand the concept of this album. The producer recorded the original vocals and then brought in guest artists and blended the two together in a way that enhances the original vocals and their messages. The original vocalists knew and approved of every step of the process and were very happy to share their culture with the other singers in this way! This is NOT a "world" music album - it's something altogether new and different.

5-0 out of 5 stars So unusual and soothing/ A spritual and political statement
I've really enjoyed this CD.It's not very often that children's lullabies can transcend their traditional purpose in order to make a statement about the commonality of human experience. The CD is an appeal to peace, rocking the listener gentley into a greater understanding of those who westerners so often typify as "the other."These songs speak of the often ineffable ties that bind mothers to their children across cultures, religions, and races. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Not my cup of cafe
The Putumayo World Music Hour devoted one of their weekly programs (MOSTLY) to this album. While it was perfect as background music for an hourlong drive to Santa Rosa,I was glad I HEARD it on the radio for free instead of buying the CD for myself.
4-0 out of 5 stars Crooning Jazzy Sultry Musique De Cafe
Putumayo presents another well-crafted collection of tunes evoking the mood of a particular place, in this case the much-romanticized street-side French cafe.An interesting aspect of this compilation is that Putumayo did their research and went for authenticity rather than an American idealization of what many would ANTICIPATE hearing at a French cafe.(The solo accordion pieces ain't here, folks.)You'll hear authentic French artists performing their best chops, not something Disney-esque or "Rugrats in Paris"-like.The result is a breezy, easy to listen to, largely club-jazz album that may make one want to whip out a hard baguette to gnaw on.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Music in the Spirit of Oktoberfest
As manager of "The Oktoberfest Webring," I am always on the lookout for CD's of good Oktoberfest music. In this particular CD, all of the songs are played by the German Air Force Band and are taken from another CD entitled, "More German Military Marches & Polkas - Vol. II." As you might expect, most of the selections are not--strictly speaking--Oktoberfest numbers. However, they are played and sung in the light-hearted, breezy manner typical of Oktoberfest. In addition, the band and singers give top-notch performances. So, as a CD of Oktoberfest-like music, I give this product high marks. It would probably make great background music for any Oktoberfest.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Soundtrack to Chubby Lou's Life.
Every Oktober (that's German for "October") Chubby Lou throws his annual Oktoberfest celebration. It's quite well known in the south, as we go on a stint of "bier trinken" (that's german for drinking beer).Seeing Chubby Lou in his Lederhosen is quite possibly the greatest thing ever, it's more memorable than your first born child. His stomach sticks out and he doesn't care, he dances the night away with his chalice full of beer. Everyone makes it out, the whole sizzle chest crew (big frank, cheese grits and lupus fury) we all have superior dancing skills than anyone attending the party.Chubby Lou loves oktoberfest so much that we have to tell him that it's over, otherwise he won't stop celebrating, he once celebrated 3 months straight and lost his job, got evicted, and his car was repocessed, we all had good laughs after that. Chubby Lous mom holds down the cooking, nothing but schnitzel, bratwurst and sauerkraut, pommes frites (that's german for french fries) all night long, she loves it.The track that really puts the party in 6th gear is " Komm Und Tanz" we played this song and danced for 3 hours, the police were called to break the famous shin-dig up, but they always end up joining the party, who can resist fine ladies, german beer, and non stop polka tanzen (that's polka dancing in german). We usually round off the end of the celebration with a 6 hour tribute to Hasselhoff, and score like Robin Yount on 3-2 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th. Anyways, I hope you see now that this is a mandatory oktoberfest keep-sake.

If these truly gorgeous lullabies and songs from all over the world don't soothe the savage beast within your child, nothing will. This hypnotic collection of soft and slow melodies--some ancient, some new--is perfect for lulling a child to sleep or for any evening when you want to escape into a warm bath with candles. Carlos Santana accompanies African singer Angelique Kidjo on the sweet opener, "Naima." Claudia Martinez sings "Arriba Del Cielo (Above theSky)," a lilting traditional lullaby with roots in the Mexican state ofGuerrero. The Letterstick Band, from the small An-Barra clan of Australian Aborigines, performs the moving "Yi-Rrana (Sunset)." One favorite is "Lá Vai Alguém (There Goes Someone)," a hot-summer-night-sounding lullaby sung in velvety tones by Virginia Rosa. Another lovely addition is Kanji Yano of the Sanshin Café Orchestra playing a generations-old lullaby on a traditional stringed instrument from Okinawa called the sanshin. The liner notes, written in English, Spanish, French, and Dutch, provide kid-friendly facts about the countries of origin. A portion of the proceeds are donated to the Putumayo Cross-Cultural Initiative, a non-profit organization that uses the power of world music and the arts to inspire children to connect with diverse cultures. 5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, complex, soothing
This is not your typical "baby music" CD, watered down melodies with sterilized syncopation and minimal instruments. These are luscious, rich, harmonic, melodic songs that my 16 month old twins have loved since they were born. Now, they wait for me to turn it on before naptime and start swaying to the music before it even starts.Mom and Dad never tire of listening to it - an important consideration as it will become a favorite in the nursery! The a capella voices are heavenly. There are male and female artists on the album, and the use of all kinds of interesting instruments from different cultures. We use it for daytime naps - I put the CD player on shuffle/repeat and get a couple of hours peace and quiet.Often I turn the nursery monitor up, just so I can hear the music myself.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful music
I play this CD for my kids as they fall asleep every night. They love it and so do I. Beautiful music; each piece sounds unique but they all blend very well. The fact that most are not in English makes it even more restful...the lyrics are just another part of the music: abstract and beautiful.

Everything about this CD, from its eye-popping cool packaging to its beautiful booklet, is wonderful, perhaps peerless. It's a study that spans 16 countries, catching paeans to childhood sleep from varied traditions. The set traverses the Cape Breton Gaelic tradition with the Rankin Family, Haiti with pop stars Boukman Eksperyans, and the African continent with music from Tonga, Algeria, and Cameroon. Despite their distances from each other, at times the songs sound quite alike. Voices might begin alone but then gather into choral size, with a reliance on wordless passages to emphasize the flow of time as sleep encroaches. In execution, the surprises are many. Algerian Houria Aïchi sounds East Indian; the Traditional Japanese Music Ensemble of New York sounds poised somewhere between a stately concert of historical court music and a touching homage to childhood; and German singer Michelle sounds pop-music ready even as she toes the line on singing a sleep-triggering song. Beyond being a great collection of international music, this is probably the most interesting mix available of cultural voices approaching the issue of children sleeping. Read more

This CD is okay, but has a number of high-pitched, almost whiny songs that aren't very soothing. It wasn't what I was expecting out of a lullaby CD.

2-0 out of 5 stars It sure ain't heroin!
It may sound like harsh judgement but there were only two songs that intrigued me and that I could see someone using on a film score. But as a whole it really is a pretty mediocre and forgetable CD. It actually serves its purpose though as it can put you to sleep as well as any other lullaby but I was hoping for something that would serve me better as background music as I sit at this PowerBook. Bottom line: It's OK but it sure ain't Heroin!

The reason why German albums sold in North America are so often compilations of beer-drinking songs such as this compilation of 14 all-time favorites from the Bavarian Beer Singers is that drinking beer is very important in Germany. Not because the beer is so good, indeed a good reason per se, but because it is a venue to socialize and enjoy the company of other people. All Germans know most if not all of these songs by heart--from "Trink, Trink, Brüderlein Trink" to "Ein Prosit der Gemütlichkeit"--and they can evoke homesickness or nostalgia. The liner notes give these instructions "How to enjoy this album": Read more

What I loved about this CD when I listened to the clips was that it sounded like a party and would make my Oktoberfest sound like even more of a blast than it was.It is everything I hoped it would be - WUNDERBAR!!!Perfect background music for an Oktoberfest Party!!!Just add sauerkraut and sausages, pretzels & beer, a good travel video of Oktoberfest, some blue and white streamers and balloons, a game of Dutch Blitz, throw in some swaying at the table and some line dancing to and from the kitchen, and finish with the Chicken Dance. Oom-pa-pa good!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars amazed by the mixed reviews
I am totally blown away by the fact that this album only gets 3.5 stars.I own all the Buddha Bar CD's up to 6 and love them all, but this one is by far my favorite.I play this whenever we have a party or a few dinner guests, and without fail, people ask me for the name of this CD. It's not as middle eastern sounding as some of the others. It's more of a European groove, but the tracks are very sensual and draw you into almost a chill out state of mind.Out of all the Buddha Bar CD"s this is the set I play the most. After this, Buddha Bar II is my next favorite.

4-0 out of 5 stars Refreshingly eclectic...
I (and others to my surprise) have greatly enjoyed the eclectic mix of music on these CDs..There is an unusual blend of various cultures more traditional music quite tastefully for a 21st century version, and has been found to be pleasing to various generations of music lovers...The most troubling aspect of purchasing this set is the packaging..It does not keep the 2 discs reliably in place...Also, the plastic inserts within the box became unglued, allowing for "more" free movement of the CDs...so upon receipt of the discs, it is best to immediately store them in another CD container to prevent any damage... ... Many subtly varied kinds of music fall under the rubric of flamenco, which is a style of singing, dancing, and even living, as well as playing the guitar. This collection presents a good guitar selection, highlighted by the polished technique of Sabicas, the profundity of Manolo de Huelva, and the sheer brilliance of Melchor de Marchena. There is a drastic change of atmosphere in the transition from track 10 (a Read more

Not only is this CD flamenco puro at its best, It almost defines flamenco puro. The performers are all famous (sabicas, nino ricardo, manolo de huelva and Melchor de Marchena). The performances are old (40-50 years +) and are true to the spirit of flamenco puro.
5-0 out of 5 stars For all lovers of true Flamenco
With all the 'Neuvo Flamenco' and its accompaning popularity. It is nice (and a relief) I might add, to hear the flamenco guitar in its purist form. Not only does this cd contain Sabicas and Nino Ricardo. It also contains four very rare perfomances by Manolo de Huelva. Which are difficult to find anywhere. Also included are Melchor de Marchena performing six pieces. This is truly Pure Flamenco at its best.

What wonderful end of the day music...probably the finest Celtic album that I own, and I own quite a few!!
5-0 out of 5 stars Uplifting, to say the least...
This CD is one of the CDs that makes me glad that we are now in a digital age as opposed to vinyl, for if this had been a vinyl album, it would have been worn flat by now.I play it constantly, in my office, in the car, at home.It has a great, spiritually-uplifting tone that is both inspiring and meditative. It has a great combination of voices, in solos and ensembles, that bring real life and dimension to the music. As the commentator for the introductory essay to these pieces says, the Celts seem to have a real feeling for the presence of the divine, and that can often be heard in these melodies, harmonies, and voices. There is beauty and there is grace in these pieces.5-0 out of 5 stars If angels sing...
If angels sing, this is how they surely must sound.Of all the music I have ever heard I find this to be the purest most transporting experience of pure feminine energy.Never syrupy or pedantic, the female vocals here seem to literally plumb the listener's deepest regions and stir those subtle quiet spaces gently to life. The gaelic lyrics, rather than being an obstacle to enjoyment, serve rather to enhance the entire musical experience by side-stepping the issue of literal meaning, at least to we who speak only English, and thereby freeing us to appreciate the words as sounds whose meaning transcends spoken language.I own other celtic albums, all of which I love for their own particular strengths, but this is the one I save to listen to at those special quiet times when I'm alone and just want to put on the headphones and be carried in the arms of the angels. ... Don't waste your money on something you think is OK and write a degrading review about a heritage you know NOTHING about buddy. Having French Moroccan blood, if you are from North African lineage, Israeli, Mizrahi, Arabic, this is BY FAR THEE BEST belly dancing album on the market. You will surely appreciate the tracks as at least five of them must have been played at a family event. I can not get this out of my cd player and an absolute GEM to dance and lose weight to! My applause and honor goes out to the creator of this album. The best of the series in my opinion.

Hawaiian slack-key guitar began evolving in the 1830s, when Spanish and Mexican cowboys brought guitars to the cattle ranches of the Big Island. It became a recognizable style around the turn of the century. The term refers to the practice of slacking some strings from standard tunings to create open tunings; the thumb provides the bass line while the other fingers play melody and improvise. It might thus remind some listeners of the fingerpicking of a country master like Doc Watson, but the style has a wind-blown, wide-open quality all its own. Traditionally an accompanying instrument in a group setting, slack key has recently moved out front, and this all-instrumentals CD shows why. From the light touch of Moses Kahumoku or Leonard Kwan to the bluesiness of George Keo or Ray Kane to the pop feel of Keola Beamer, it offers the best possible introduction to the music. --Read more

    Editorial Review

This 1995 tribute to the late Brazilian bossa nova master draws from the cream of the Verve/Polygram jazz catalog. Saxophonist Stan Getz, who introduced the sublimely sensual bossa nova to North American audiences in the early '60s, is joined by vocalist João Gilberto on the well-known title track and by guitarist Luiz Bonfa on the exquisite "O Morro Nao Tem Vez." Sarah Vaughan ("Corcovado"), Billy Eckstine ("Felicidade"), Wes Montgomery ("How Insensitive"), and Oscar Peterson ("Wave") also turn in classic performances from the '60s. Jobim himself offers guitar and piano accompaniment on several tracks and duets with Brazilian vocalist Elis Regina on "Aguas de Marco." Although subsequent generations of lame lounge singers have robbed bossa nova of its original mystique, in its pure form, this music is unsurpassed in conveying an intimately romantic mood with carefree sophistication. I've had this cd for about 10 years now, and I've loved every minute of it again and again. Every song has its own beauty, in a very diverse way. The performance in "Chega de Saudade" is particularly riveting, each instrument delivering an absolutely perfect solo.

5-0 out of 5 stars Putumayo is amazing
Putumayo has introduced me to so much great music! They have really good taste! They choose music you wouldn't normally hear and yet it's not too folksy- it's great to listen to. This is one of my favorite CDs by them. It cheers you up so much to listen to it and you can just imagine the bright blue sea off the coast of Cuba. In fact, this CD was so good- every song- that it got me into Cuban music and I've been delving into Cuban music ever since.

4-0 out of 5 stars Buena coleccion de son cubano

5-0 out of 5 stars Smooth Sound Surprises Shakuhachi Skeptic
Well, I finally gave in. While I've generally found CDs of international music by Nonesuch to be consistently high quality, and while I love the way Ensemble Nipponia (of which Miyata Kohachiro is a member) does traditional Japanese music, I held off from buying this particular CD...the shakuhachi flute isn't my overall favorite instrument, especially by itself; I've often found it to be monotonous and screechy. This CD proved me wrong, though, I'm happy to say. Each track is different in its own way, ranging from the smooth subtle calm of "Honshirabe" to the virtuoso trilling flights of "Tsuru no Sugomori"--all the while maintaining an austere meditative tone throughout the album. Miyata's performance is superb, handling the tricky parts with great artistry and skill without showing off, and he really brings out a deep, full sound in the shakuhachi that swims over the eardrums wonderfully. I was a skeptical listener, but this CD won me over.
