3-0 out of 5 stars Tu es mejor en espanol
I love Shakira and have listened to her for years, but honestly she sounds so much better when singing in spanish. I am not a fluent speaker of spanish, but you can tell she has more feeling for the songs she writes and sings in spanish, than those in english. This album is good, but not her best. Hightlights on this album are Hips Don't Lie, and the re mix of La Tortura. I would recommend her first album, Fijacion Oral 1 over this.

1-0 out of 5 stars She has lost her unique identity
The question is: What has happened to Shakira? Where are her familiar, latin, explosive songs? This album has nothing that gives it an original Shakira identity, it's more like Shakira is trying too hard to lose her latina tamperament and become another Cristina Anguilera. I listened to the album once and afterwards could not remember the tune of a single song! The only interesting track is 'Don't bother' where the music is fine but the lyrics are so uninspirational! Furthermore, I'm getting a bit tired of seeing her in every single music video throwing liquids on her body and shaking her hips. Especially when you try to be a rocker, this nonsense a la Jessica Simpson seem so cheap, like you're trying to market yourself, not the music. Plus, she repeatedly 'thickens' her voice which sounds pretentious and at the end of the day, bad.
5-0 out of 5 stars Hits Don't Lie?
When i first purchased Shakira's Oral Fixation vol. 2, i was of course skeptical about what i was getting myself into.I purchased Laundry Service back in 2001 so i was hoping to hear a continuation of Laundry Service.Boy was i wrong and i must say, im glad i am.Laundry Service was an overall adequate listen, nothing memorable besides Whenever Wherever and Underneath your clothes. The first song of VOL. 2, "How Do You do" is so great! The raw beauty that comes out of this womans voice is just compeling yet at times i find myself wishing i could understand some of the stuff she says. I find her pronunciation confussing and tiring at times but with repeated listens to the entire album, i have found that it takes some getting used to.Once you get over the fact that Shakira's voice is unusual, you will see that her voice is a wonderful passionate instrument on its own.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
It is as good as expected and more. All the songs are great, maybe with the exception of 6. Escondite Ingles. My personal favorites are 2. La Pared 7. No and 8. Las de la Intuicion. If you like Shakira this is a must have, especially for those that loved her previous spanish language albums.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not perfect but Shakira's voice makes it great
Shakira is brilliant. Not only does she produce and write her own material, she sings in what I describe as the music business female sex's most unique bleat.Usually my reviews come from a third person perspective (since any critic knows that's the best way to approach a review), but it's hard to describe Shakira's musings without inserting my personal feelings and opinions toward and about it."La Tortura" is the biggest hit here, of course, and deservedly so.It's simply the best Latin pop song to come along in a long time. The beat, the poetic lyrics and that voice all combine to produce one awesome track.Fijacion Oral is a mismash of genres and, unfortunately, only a couple songs can even come close to approaching the instant smash "La Tortura" is.Opener "En Tus Pupilas" (featured on the later Oral Fixation album in English) is decent and sounds somewhat European."La Pared" is one of Fijacion's better moments."Las De La Intuicion" is the record's second best track with its disco-infused melody and charge-forward beat."Lo Imprescindible" use of thundering drums adds rock flavor to Fijacion while "Dia De Enero" is girlish fun.Though I prefer the English language Oral Fixation to the Spanish Fijacion Oral, with each listen this record just keeps getting better and better.

3-0 out of 5 stars The English Oral Fixation is better
Colombian rock goddess Shakira is quite the performer. The talented hip-shaker extraordinaire gives an impassioned performance in her trademark throaty-and-nasal bleat over the course of 12 addictive Spanish language tracks that make up Fijacion Oral Vol. 1.The standout here is, of course, the No. 1 global smash "La Tortura" featuring sexy call-and-response dialogue with Latin singer Alejandro Sanz ("La Tortura" is also presented in a remixed format but sits far below its original mix). The opener (featured in English on the later English language Oral Fixation Vol. 2) "En Tus Pupilas" is soft and sensual with its European-influenced mystique and chordal Spanish guitar, but unfortunately it's not one of Fijacion Oral's most memorable moments (aforementioned "La Tortura" holds that spot deservedly) and could keep listeners from delving deeper into the complex and individual workings of the remainder of the album. The bleaterrific "La Pared" showcases Shakira's rich and unique vocals, and is offered up in both original and acoustic versions."Lo Imprescindible" officially closes the record with its thundering drums and incredibly rock-oriented rhythm and beats. In the end, it's an interesting listen with few highs, but the English language Oral Fixation Vol. 2 is much more consistent and likable. ... frist off i been knowing shakirasince 2000 i was in the ninth gradei know she trying to hard she made it there have been other crossovers who have try and failed liked (kyile minougebjork and rebecca st james) all thesse artists have failed to made a break throught in the us the only one has made in the usa. is here i know her voice sound a littleto highbut what i am saying she made mrs dion all made a break throughtin 97so give the girl a break. people will have to get use to her voiceand she major star in south americanshe did better than janet jackson and mariah carey even that their low point mariah cameback but she didn,t made strong comeback .

4-0 out of 5 stars I can do my laundry service any day!
Shakira was right to call this "Laundry Service". Hearing the opening number "Objection" always makes me feel like I just bought this CD yesterday. This my first and only Shakira CD with English and it is refreshing tohear it every time. She has her fair share of hits on here that I can surely hear over and over, like "Whenever, Wherever" and "Eyes Like Yours". This is a pretty unusual crossover CD, containing both English and her native Spanish. Clearly, she finds it easier in her own language, evident in songs like "Suerte" and "Que Me Quedes Tu". Her English is a bit choppy, but people won't buy music from a Spanish singer to bask in their English. Her voice makes it difficult to listen sometimes, as in "Underneath Your Clothes" and "The One", and I feel that "Fool" and "Poem to a Horse" are positioned well yet often overlooked as many Shakira fans are lured to more her scantily clad dance videos than rocking songs about how her "heart is sore". As for me, I hope that the clothes in this cycle never dry out!

1-0 out of 5 stars La Voz De ShakiraMe Hace Vomitar
Where do I start? This is awful. "Underneath Your Clothes" sounds too much like Alanis Morrisette's "Head Over Feet." "Whenever, Wherever" sounds much better in the Spanish-version "Suerte" and the video to that was alright. The rest of the songs sound like 1980's leftovers retrieved from the trash. Other than that, Shakira sounds absolutely dreadful. It's like hearing someone scratching their nails down a chalkboard. This chick doesn't know if she wants to emulate Jewel, Alanis Morrisette, or Britney Spears. But I guess she was like, "F*** it! I'll sound like all three!" and all you get is chaos. You can't even tell what kind of emotion Shakira is trying to express in a song because her voice is so messed up. "Laundry Service" sucks and "Oral Fixation" Vol. 1 and 2 are even worse. Shakira's easy on the eyes but she's killer on the ears. She needs to dye her back to its original black color and take some singing lessons. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Big disappointment
I've loved some of Shakira's previous songs, and when I heard "Hips Don't Lie", and the fabulous "Don't Bother" (I LOVE those lyrics), I just had to get the album. I put it off for a while, but saw it at a semi-reasonable price, and bought it.
4-0 out of 5 stars Many Layers of Flavor
To dismiss Shakira as a pretty pop star is to miss the point of who this gutsy performer really is. Long before she burst into the U.S. musical scene with her weakest and most pop-sounding album yet, "Laundry Service", Shakira had earned the respect of the Latin and indie rock music world with her uncompromising personality, her intense political views and her complex, sexually and emotionally charged songs. "Laundry Service" took away that credit for a brief period. But with the double release of her albums "Fijacion Oral Vol.1" and "Oral Fixation Vol.2", she gets it back with a vengeance.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just One Word: WOW!!!!!
I've always adored Shakira for the boisterousness and vociferousness that she imports into her music. Be it "Whenever Wherever" or "La Tortura",her music combined with appealing lyrics have always sent a thrill of pleasure and liveliness down my feet and her latest sensational single,"Hips Don't Lie",released from the new album "Oral Fixation Vol.2" and featuring Wyclef Jean is no exception. Shakira lets loose her vibrant music and is so charming in her tone and rhythm. Shakira has really come a long way in becoming a real Latin pop diva and the Colombian singer is surely a big thing in the pop music industry. She looks so killing and sensuous in the video of the song too. "Hips Don't Lie" is another jewel for any pop music lover's treasure closet.

3-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic song; just learned it was remake though
I do not like pop music for the most part (rock and metal are my forte).Yet I find this song to be one of the catchiest (in a good way) I've heard since the stuff on "Thriller".
1-0 out of 5 stars What you say?

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome!
I got this album after I bought Oral Fixation Vol.2 and this is a BEAUTIFUl album with majestic and wonderfully written songs that make you want to dance along. Her songs are beautifully written and touch you deep in the heart. Buy this album if you're considering it!!!
4-0 out of 5 stars "Where are the Thieves?"
Shakira conquered Spanish-speaking audiences with the intriguing "Pies Descalzos", but it is this album that remains the most pivotal moment of her career. "Dnde Estn los Ladrones?" was Shakira's breakthrough, the album that established her internationally as a unique force in the music industry.
5-0 out of 5 stars this is Shakira's breakthrough album...
There are some albumsyou listen to that truly speak to your heart and permeate your soul."Donde Estan Los Ladrones" is one of those albums. This was Shakira's second major rock album release in this country (she had released two earlier albums in her country, Colombia, as a young singer at the ages of thirteen and sixteen).

4-0 out of 5 stars Chill out with a cup of coffee ora Mojito......
Good Putumayo CD.Several very good tracks on this CD. 'Guajira Bonita' is fantastic, and reminds me of my trip to Peru hiking the Inca trail. Tracks 2, 3 are good as well, and then proceed to the wonderful Susana Baca with her bold, beautiful voice on 'Maria Lando'. 'Below the Bassline' is a wonderfully mellow Reggae sounding instrumental track that brings me back to all carribbean trips. 'Dilema' reminds me of my salsa adventure to Cuba, and 'Esa Noche' is a very good instrumental track with fantastic guitar that makes me yearn for returning to Mexico City or Oaxaca. Track 9, 10 are good as well. 'Este Son' will help you chill out with your cup of coffee. Highly recommend this CD if you enjoy Latin music, as well as international music. The pamphlet submitted with the CD about the artists is informtive and only adds to the enjoyment of the CD. A Putumayo Must!

Editorial Review

Latin America has produced dozens of brilliant female singers and composers, including trail-blazers like Violetta Parra, Elis Regina, Soledad Bravo and Mecedes Sosa, to mention only a few. The present generation is also shaping up nicely. There are more women bandleaders than ever before, firmly in charge of their own talent, free to choose their material and back-up players without interference. As they so often do, Putumayo has supplied a short-list of emerging stars; the voices heard on this album are uniformly splendid and worthy of deeper exploration. But there are a few stand-outs: Brazilian Mônica Salmaso's creamy dark voice makes a strong impression, as does Chilean chanteuse Jacqueline Fuentes's plaintive, fado-like mezzo and Lhasa's limpidly nostalgic Mexican ranchera. Some may cavil at yet another gender-based compilation. But they should consider that male-dominated equivalents have existed since the dawn of the recorded era; they were just not labeled as such. 5-0 out of 5 stars Muy Hermosa!
Women of Latin America is truly a sweet treasure. This is the first album that i have bought from this series. I am very glad i did. Each artists from this CD exemplifies a mood in their own way. At times sensual to haunting, sad, and hopeful, these artists truly are talented, beautiful, and powerful. I wish artists like these had more praise and attention than the artists these days that are nothing more but entertainers using just sex appeal to be noticed. This is what real music is about, even when you don't know a single word from the lyrics! I know Spanish pretty well, and im telling you, even the lyrics are "muy hermosa" and just incredible. This is an album worth having if you truly appreciate the passion and beauty of the Spanish language, and beautiful Latin American woman. Gozar de la musica de vida!

What a perfect intro CD to listeners new to Latin songs performed by some of the greatest female vocalists! The multifarious selection in the CD exposes the listeners to the rich spectrum of melodious, soothing, and sensual musical gifts that those female artists share with the rest of world with their grace. This CD also serves as a perfect ramification tool to deepen one's appreciation of any of the female vocalists listed. I like all of them and intend to purchase each vocalist's individual CD to further my understanding of her musical style and philosophy. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My best Columbian CD!
First of all, I own over 400 Latin music CDs because I have a true and devoted appreciation to all Latin American countries being hispanic. But I have to say that it's the Colombian music that always has the magic of simultaneously making my feet dance and touch my heart with its superb beat and lyrics.Of course, I have yet to be disappointed with a Putamayo CD but this one hits home.If you want to get a real taste of the different beats that Columbia has to offer - "Vallenato", "cumbia", "porro", "salsa" from TOP artists, you must get this.To top it all off, each of the artists/bands listed has their own collection of incredible hits.Dan Storper (CEO) not only offers historical information about Colombia in the enclosed booklet, but he also includes background stories of each artist.I bought this at full price when living in NY so this is an even better deal.By the way, if you are ever in NY, check out Chibcha - this Columbian night club has lasted for so many years - they always play good oldies and contemporary Colombian as well as other latino music.Don't forget to check out the collections of the artists listed.Enjoy!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful
This is probably my favourite Putumayo collection. I have several of them, and have played them all many times, but this one most of all. The music is uplifting, though one cannot help but think of the troubled country from which it comes. This helps you understand the spirit of the people themselves. My favourite track is the very well known Fiesta de Negritos, and the version included here is full of vigour and passion. If this kind of music is new to you then I certainly suggest taking a chance on it. Very highly recommended.

I think people should buy this compilation to learn more about Colombia and to embrace it's beautiful culture even though the country has problems. Colombianos are some hardworking, great people. I live in Panama and two nights ago had the great pleasure of going to Carlos Vives' concert, on his "Rock de mi Pueblo" tour.If you have a chance to catch part of this tour, do so.His live act is marvelous, a great way to see him and all of his talented musicians in action. His love for Colombia and attachment to his musical roots are still strong and come across in every piece. This collection is not as traditional-sounding as his previous ones, but he's stretching and trying out new stuff, always with great musical talent and creativity.I just hope he doesn't stray too far from Colombia's beloved vallenato style and lose it in the process.I lived in Colombia in the 1990's, when his career was taking off, and to me, Carlos Vives IS Colombia.I hear him and I'm transported back to this most beautiful but badly maligned country.Que viva por siempre el amor de mi tierra!

5-0 out of 5 stars Viva Carlos!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars The definition of Colombia and its evolution
I heard Carlos Vives for the first time when I was travelling in Colombia (for the first time) for Christmas of 1993.At that time, "Clasicos de la Provincia" had just been released in Colombia, and although at that young age of 22 I was a big fan of salsa and merengue music (and could dance it) I had never heard anything like vallenato music.Throughout my month long trip, I listened to that album over and over again (luckily I can speak Spanish) and fell in love with both the album and the country.Because of this, Carlos Vives' music for me signifies what Colombia itself is.And it continues to do this.True, his music has evolved since then, but so has the country itself.Times do change and music is never stagnant. However, his newest album does not seem to be any big departure from his former albums. While Clasicos and Tengo Fe were more attuned to a traditional vallenato sound, as early as La Tierra del Olvido, Carlos Vives was making these blended types of sounds - his traditional music mixed with some pop and rock.Let's not forget that he was a rock/pop musician BEFORE he did Clasicos de la Provincia and his earlier La Escalona.Rock de Mi Pueblo has some wonderful sounds, and yes a few songs may not be to someone's liking, but in the end Carlos is continuing to speak for a nation, something he does very well.If you are a fan of his music, you should get this album.... it's like being transported to Colombia in a big festive chiva.Que chimba !! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best Spanish albums in a very long time!
I've been a Shakira fan for many many years. My obsession started with Ojos Asi and from then it just kept getting bigger and bigger. I've never heard anyone that has been able to stop me dead in my tracks with just one sentence. And the best part is I barely speak a word of Spanish! True she isn't the Celine Dion of Latin music, but Shakira just has the thing about her that makes you want to listen even if you can't comprehend!
3-0 out of 5 stars Shakira's New CDs
Liked the diversity of her music; still impressed by how talented this young woman is. Not my favorite CD, but a good addition to the rotation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Changed me
I always lisend to play music or as my neighbor always said music without words which is classical music. I listend to Shakira and thought "What a terrible CD" because my sisters favorite was my least favorite but my mom also liked it so i listend to other songs and found one that sounded familiar "Whenever, Whearever" so i listend to the others and they grew on me so now i'm one of the biggest Shakira fans

4-0 out of 5 stars Not Hector singing, but still a decent tribute
1st, let me address the review by "A music fan" below - he's wrong: Hector LaVoe DOES NOT sing on this album (it's impossible as he died in 1993)- it's a tribute album from a Columbian Salsa band - Los Titanes (now known as Titanez de La Salsa due to contractual issues) who have been around since '82 - a very good band, by the way - check their music out.
4-0 out of 5 stars A worthy tribute
As one of the reviewers correctly points out, this is not Hector Lavoe singing. After all, this is a tribute. However, that does not mean this is a bad album.Quite the contrary.
5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Tribute
When I first ordered this cd I didn't think too much of it. As I heard the first song I thought it was actually Hector singing! The orchestra stayed true to his music as well as the singers! I believe if Hector was alive, he'd be proud of this tribute! ... Read more

This cd was just ok, it has some amazing songs like "Fruta Fresca" but i've he has better cds.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Spiritual Music from Colombia
Like many Colombians, I've known about Carlos Vives from his days of Clasicos de la Provincia in 1993. Vives takes provincial music from Colombia (vallenato and cumbia, among numerous others) and infuses them with a spirituality and depth that makes the music all the more worthy. El Amore De Mi Tierra is no different. Vives pulls from various fountains of Colombian music and turns them into flowing, rhythmic world music that is accessable to all peoples. The collection here is very good. While "Fruta Fresca" is the track that most people are familiar with, "La Piragua" is definately the best track on the album. An update of a classic Colombian cumbia song, Vives's take on "La Piragua" turns the song into a lush fable full of earthy melodies and a spirit of the Amazon without forskaing the song's musical roots. For those who are new to Carlos Vives, this album is a great place to start.

5-0 out of 5 stars latin music
Excellent! Carlos Vives has done an amzing job in this record I can feel CULTURE every time I listen to it, even my 10 month old baby likes it...Definetly very talented, all the musicians that play with him are good specially the accordionist.I imagine that colombians must be very proud to have such a good artist. Thank you Carlos Vives.

5-0 out of 5 stars High-Energy Colombian Fun (Llena de Energia!)
Doesn't matter if you don't understand Spanish, if you feel like celebrating, take a listen to this native Colombian sound!Unlike Vives' softer sounds or his latest latin-rock album, this one's pure fun. After 10 years, it's still just as great.(Cuando quieres celebrar/bailar, eschuche a este disco colombiano!Despues de 10 anos, este disco todavia es mi favorito de Vives, es mas tradicional y alta-energia.La mayoria de su discos son mas suaves, y su ultimo es un nuevo estilo latino-rock.)

5-0 out of 5 stars Carlos Vives
I have found it is good to get involved in music that is beyond the narrow sight of the media. This CD has some of the most beautiful forms of Cumbia that originates in the country of Colombia. This dipicts the colture of this beautiful country not to be full of drug lords or what ever else people say but full of love and romance between the people and very strong family ties that shows that we all have things to learn from each other.

5-0 out of 5 stars Shakira Is HOT And She Can Really Rock!
The CD section of this album shows that Shakira is one of the few recording artists around today who sounds even beter live than on her studio produced albums. Her vocal range soars like an eagleand is just as tough and strong. The DVD section of this compilation gives a fascinating insight into this very talented artist and woman. As Shakira says "A mongoose can kill a cobra so there is hope for us all" Amen to that.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Shakira CD?
I'd like to disclose upfront that I am an avid Shakira fan. I have and enjoy all of her albums and compilations, in both Spanish and English.
5-0 out of 5 stars Well worth it.
When I got this, I got a whole lot more than I expected. This is well worth the $15 give or take.
