Editorial Review

Latin America has produced dozens of brilliant female singers and composers, including trail-blazers like Violetta Parra, Elis Regina, Soledad Bravo and Mecedes Sosa, to mention only a few. The present generation is also shaping up nicely. There are more women bandleaders than ever before, firmly in charge of their own talent, free to choose their material and back-up players without interference. As they so often do, Putumayo has supplied a short-list of emerging stars; the voices heard on this album are uniformly splendid and worthy of deeper exploration. But there are a few stand-outs: Brazilian Mônica Salmaso's creamy dark voice makes a strong impression, as does Chilean chanteuse Jacqueline Fuentes's plaintive, fado-like mezzo and Lhasa's limpidly nostalgic Mexican ranchera. Some may cavil at yet another gender-based compilation. But they should consider that male-dominated equivalents have existed since the dawn of the recorded era; they were just not labeled as such. 5-0 out of 5 stars Muy Hermosa!
Women of Latin America is truly a sweet treasure. This is the first album that i have bought from this series. I am very glad i did. Each artists from this CD exemplifies a mood in their own way. At times sensual to haunting, sad, and hopeful, these artists truly are talented, beautiful, and powerful. I wish artists like these had more praise and attention than the artists these days that are nothing more but entertainers using just sex appeal to be noticed. This is what real music is about, even when you don't know a single word from the lyrics! I know Spanish pretty well, and im telling you, even the lyrics are "muy hermosa" and just incredible. This is an album worth having if you truly appreciate the passion and beauty of the Spanish language, and beautiful Latin American woman. Gozar de la musica de vida!

5-0 out of 5 stars Vocal Prowess meets diverse styles
The lovely women of Latin America profiled inWOMEN OF LATIN AMERICA were chosen for their vocal prowess, their diverse styles, and their ability to appeal across cultures to a wide audience outside of as well as within Latin America.
5-0 out of 5 stars Epitome of Feminine Vocal Grace
What a perfect intro CD to listeners new to Latin songs performed by some of the greatest female vocalists! The multifarious selection in the CD exposes the listeners to the rich spectrum of melodious, soothing, and sensual musical gifts that those female artists share with the rest of world with their grace. This CD also serves as a perfect ramification tool to deepen one's appreciation of any of the female vocalists listed. I like all of them and intend to purchase each vocalist's individual CD to further my understanding of her musical style and philosophy. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars They're back!!!
I really love the new Los Tres album, it's nice to see these South American rock icons finally get a U.S. release, especially after they got a name north of the border when Cafe Tacuba did a covers album of Los Tres songs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful rock 'n' roll
I was watching the Latin Grammy Awards last week when I learned that La Ley was disbanding.I was dismayed, especially when the group proceeded to perform an electrifying set that rocked the house.
5-0 out of 5 stars Deserves more than 5 stars-Awesome!!!
If you are not familiar with La Ley I recommend you buy this CD and go back and buy the rest of their CD's. Beto Cuevas has a talent he has a remarkable voice it's indescribable. Hear it and you'll know what I'm talking about, you'll fall in love (if your a girl :))pair that up with the music and you have a hit.He can sing unplugged and it's so perfect that you think your hearing the radio version. La Ley is the best Latin rock group out their-it's ashame so many people have not heard of them. Hear them now and buy it-people!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect!!!
I saw La Ley live in concert recently at Webster Hall in NYC.Words can't express how incredible this band plays live.Beto Cuevas is trully a gifted vocalist who comfortably and eloquently uses the full range of his voice and delivers a perfect performance.Their unplugged CD a good example of how talented they are.The unplugged DVD is even better. ... Editorial Review

Chilean traditional music septet Inti-Illimani have spent the last 30 yearsmixing together South American folk styles and a human-rights oriented political agenda.Taking on the largely string-oriented folk music of the Andes Mountains, Inti-Illimanisurround their often unison Spanish vocals with rainstorms of guitars, charangos, ronrocos, and guitarrons. In doing so, the group celebrates the everydayness of Andeanmusic and culture--striking a chord of solidarity with global folk cultural struggles. --Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars You Will Fall in Love
I first learned about Violeta Parra when I read her poetry in Woman Who Has Sprouted Wings: Poems by Contemporary Latin American Women Poets. I was both struck with the poems and the circumstances of her life. Besides being a gifted writer, singer and musician, she painted and wove tapestries known in Chile as Arpilleras and was the first Latin American artist welcomed at the Louvre. A very accomplished woman, she nevertheless committed suicide in Santiago in 1967 at the age of 50.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful
I'm writing this for you English speakers out there... BUY THIS ALBUM!I've been following Lucybell for a long time now and believe that they may just be the best band out there... The music speaks for itself- melodious, haunting, attention-grabbing, heart-wrenching, mesmerizing... With all due respect, by the way, to Francisco (ex-drummer and attempted singer), Lucybell have truly become invincible with the addition of Cote Foncea on the skins! IT'S ABOUT TIME Lucybell gets the recognition they deserve- they sell out shows in their native Chile and pack houses across Latin America... now it's time to do the same when they come to the U.S. ... I'm currently in Japan and pissed that I won't be able to see them live but I will definitely be wearing this CD out like the the others! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice little selection
This is a nice, if necessarily somewhat limited, selection of a dozen of Violeta Parra's earlier recordings, mostly from the period between her career as a duet with her sister Hilda, singing the popular music of the day in the dives or "boliches" of Santiago, and her perhaps better known latter period of more socially engaged work. Only one song in this collection, "Y arriba quemando el sol", is more or less politically oriented - it also seems to be the latest of these recordings; the others are a mix of folkloric songs and her own compositions assimilating the different styles of folk music she had learned from her parents as a child and on her travels and investigations throughout the length and breadth of Chile. There's also one song, "El hijo arrepentido", with text by her brother, the famous poet Nicanor Parra.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Potpourri of Pleasaure
Talk about diverse! This Rough Guide travels from Cuban son and the magnificent piano playing of Ruben Gonzalez to popular Indonesian songs and back again. One must have an open mind and broad tastes to be able to absorb the vastly divergent styles on this CD. However, each selection is superb on its own terms, and most of the music is danceable. If you are truly a connoisseur of world music, try this companion CD to volume two of the revised ROUGH GUIDE TO WORLD MUSIC. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great CD!
I was very surprised by how much I enjoyed this CD! It was a risky purchase since I didn't recognize the artists, but it was definitely worth it. All of the songs on South America:Chile are excellent. The songs I enjoyed the most were Alturas, Toro Mata, La Palmatoria, and both Violeta Parra songs. I agree completely with the other review of this CD - Mejia's voice is wonderful. I highly recommend this CD for all Chilean music lovers!

4-0 out of 5 stars Chilean classics of the Nueva Cancion style
A pleasant mixture of songs composed by Victor Jara, Violeta Parra, Horacio Salinas, the most prominent musicians from the beginning of the Nueva Cancion movement in Chile. Exquisite guitar playing by RodrigoAlvarado and the clear voice of Maria Meija make this CD a pleasure.Concentrating on a few instruments - guitar, bombo drum and voice - makefor a very clear, transparent sound. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Senor Coconut... the best... and it's from my country!
[...]im from chile and since a couple of month i had never heard about Uwe Schmidt (Senor Coconut). I started listening to him and then someone told me that he lived in Santiago, Chile. I bought the record inmediatly (i'm a big Kraftwerk fan). The cd is awesome. Here in chile we do not listen to salsa or rumba or cha cha cha.. that's in the center of america. Here people listen other stuff. This guy is a german person, he married a chilean woman and came to live here. this is a pretty famous guy, but nobody knows him here. it's funny. he started to make this kraftwerk covers, and made an imaginary band "Senor Coconut y su Conjunto". This "conjunto" do not exist. this is only Uwe Schmidt making music here in chile.... well i hope now you know a little bit more about Senor Coconut... [...]!

5-0 out of 5 stars JUSTEXCELLENT...
Fantastic homage to Kraftwerk by Senor Coconut Y Su Conjunto. Wonderful blend of Latin rythym and electronic music that puts me in a trance. It can be played loud or soft and still work.My favorite picks are "Showroom Dummies" and "Neon Lights". I just love it and will keep an eye on this talented group. Highly recommended. Very highly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cool

5-0 out of 5 stars Lucho Gatica- Boleros-Vol.1
This great compilation from "Orfeon" offers some of Gatica's great "boleros". You will be delighted as you hear blockbuster hits like "Amor Mio", "Historia De Un Amor", "NoMe Platiques", "Estoy Perdido","LaEnramada","Tu Me Acostumbraste", "Novia Mia","Encadenados", "Prohibido" and "Como Fue",the latter a great cuban 1950's bolero classic, sung successfully by onlythree great singers, Beny More and Vicentico Valdes of Cuba and LuchoGatica of Chile. The musical background of these songs is different thanthe ones in the original recordings, giving these songs new sound andfeeling. This CD is a must for all Lucho Gatica and bolero fans. ...
