5-0 out of 5 stars Beyond Music - Exquisite
Sometimes I read these reviews and think they come from insiders in the music industry, I'm not one of them just a music lover. This CD's music is passionate, dramatic, powerful, brilliant, melodic food for your soul, in total it is for me the finest CD in my collection.Alex de Grassi is in a league of his own.I don't know his work well enough to comment on any of his other CD's but this is a Masterpiece!

5-0 out of 5 stars Looking Back While Looking Forward
The interesting thing about a good retrospective is that it really isn't a collection of 'greatest hits,' but an opportunity for the musician to look again at his (or her) own work and select out the pieces from the past that mean the most now.Sometimes, this brings the listener new insights as well.Alex De Grassi is the kind of musician that one doesn't forget easily. His ability is astounding, his instruments include unusual built guitars, and his vision of where he wants to go leaves not stone unturned. While some of the works included here surprised me, all are examples of his best, simply because Alex De Grassi has nothing to give but his best.4-0 out of 5 stars Alex who? Don't worry.
I never was a fan of Alex de Grassi but I got 14 classical guitar tunes ... It's all nice! A greatest hits of sorts. Different harmonies and a piece where mr. de Grassi's heard as accompaniment. One live piece and a few "How'd he do thats." This is a paradigm for what Windham Hill is all about---An unknown muscician that has bested her instrument with mistake-free craft and gives other artisans a way to understand the beauty of music, Ok, Maybe not.But please buy this and enjoy it. ... "Meditation and water are wedded forever," says New Acoustic progenitor Alex de Grassi, quoting Herman Melville in the liner notes to this 10-song cycle of solo steel-string guitar pieces "on the theme of water." There's a stillness at the heart of this Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Crystalline Beauty
Alex de Grassi is one of the best contemporary acoustic guitarists, and this is one of his best albums. Nominated for a grammy award, the compositions, guitar technique, and production quality on this album are all superb. 5-0 out of 5 stars I don't like it, but I admire it.
I do think this album deserves 5 stars, although I personally don't like it. I don't like this style of ultra-precise, sharp, "plucky" guitar-playing in which every note sounds completely separate (I'm not a big fan of "New Acoustic" music, which seems to often sound this way); I like music that is fuller and "flows" together more. This album does make me think of water, but of thousands of individual drops, rather than waves or a waterfall. If you love very crisp-sounding solo classical/New Acoustic guitar music (with a hint of jazz) you will probably love this album. Just not my type of music.

5-0 out of 5 stars Masterful, soothing, flowing, virtuoso guitar playing!
One of the reasons I picked this disc up is because it is encoded in HDCD, myself being an audiophile who enjoys great music and great QUALITY in a recording. That said, I always had heard of Alex, but never bought anything from him.Upon my first play, I was hooked.Alex's technique and sound is incredible! His guitar playing is so liquid and seemingly effortless, it truly does evoke being transported to one of the most tranquil, scenic, aromatic places that exist on earth! His is one of the most unique styles of acoustic guitar playing I have ever heard, and that is a compliment.Bliss= me, this disc, and my Magneplanars!!! ... I own Music CD's from around the world, from the Aborigines of Australia,to the Zuni Indians' of New Mexico, and the music of5-0 out of 5 stars la cream de la cream
Savia Andina is largely the best andean group in the world, unlike Inti Illimani from Chili ( which is one of my favorits too) they never were involved in political issues, so they stayed in Bolvia. Most of Andean groups in the world are inspired by savia andina, they are just the best, they are unique. They have devoted their live to research and to promote music from lost cultures and forgotten towns. No one who loves andean music should miss this group. We, south americans still feel such emotion each time we listen "el minero", music and words, they just touch your hard and bones to make you feel so little.... It's a must

5-0 out of 5 stars Now & Then
This album is AWESOME!If you're not familiar with Alex, check out his website at www.degrassi.comHe's a world-reknown fingerstyle guitarist.Been nominated for Grammy's, toured the world over and is an all around incredible musician. This album is comprised of standard classics like Oh Susannah, When Johnny Comes Marching Home, Swing Low Sweet Chariot and the likes thereof. It's an acoustic instrumental album, but the sounds produced are so right on that you'll be singing along too.Really takes you back. 5-0 out of 5 stars it's good!
This is one of the early Kjarkas recordings with the Lauro label. Those of which made a string albums through the 80's that were their best.Just about every song here is a classic. The cd features a variety of traditional Bolivian rhythms but with great songwriting.Combined, the instruments and singing all create a sound that is often imitated by other acts.I have this on vinyl and I must say I'm pleased with the sound on this cd.The euro label Tumi did a good job with this release.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best Kjarkas cd's
I have many kjarkas cd's and this is one of my favorites. If you don't like the 'Americanized' andean music with the modern sound to it... you probably won't like this one. If your an andean freak and have a large collection, you will realize that the old andean music from the 60's - early 80's is the best. This is one of those. This cd also has a few famous andean songs that were first heard on this cd such as 'llorando se fue' and 'wayayay'. If you are familiar with these very well known andean songs, you will really enjoy hearing it from the original group on the first album they were recorded. A must buy for any andean music fan. ... Editorial Review

A superb fingerstyle guitarist with a mix of harmonic adventure and metaphysical trappings similar to that of steel-string legend John Fahey, California native de Grassi moves ably from dense chordal work to vibrantly ornamented lines. Ethnic touches abound: The urgent motion of "36" is undercut with sunny flamenco gestures, while Brazilian Read more

Alex has such a wonderful technique. His music hits the core of peace and beauty, highlighting the wonderful sound that the guitar is capable of.AG weaves some mightly powerful magic.I highly recommend this treasure!

5-0 out of 5 stars A slice of perfection
This record is a delight from start to finish. Needless to say, the performances are exemplary; Alex De Grassi has a wonderful technique. But what makes this record particularly valuableis its overall compositional strength. The music presented here is purposeful, intriguingly structured and absolutely entrancing. There is a stillness and purity at its core. The listener is drawn in almost hypnotically. Each piece seems to follow on naturally from the one before , and the overall impact is strangely cleansing and therapeutic. I hesitate to highlight particular tracks, but I find EMPTY ROOM a shatteringly beautiful experience. Just listen! This is a special record, a lovely work of art, a slice of perfection.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Andes got the blues
The first thing I thought when I first listened to this CD was that I couldn't decide whether it was transporting me to a cool smoked filled jazz club somewhere in New York or to the fresh pungent mists of the Andes and then I realized that it was actually taking me both places at once! What a trip! 5-0 out of 5 stars Tata Monk
Traditional andean music and jazz may sound like a clumsy blend, but the mix really suceeds on Tata Monk, lending a fresh perspective to both genres. When you listen to Tata Monk, you can simulataneously envision yourself in a smoke-filled basement bar with a lone piano player or gasping for breath atop an Andean peak, but the music doesn't suffer from a split personality and does both genres justice. The whole effort sounds fresh and complete, carving out a sound quite different from the genres I have to resort to describe it. It sounds truly new and different- Tata Monk always draws a lot of people into my dorm room whenever I play it. Pop this in at your next quiet party and you'll feel much cooler than your friends with their Buena Vista Social Club spinoffs and 40 year old jazz reissues. Its a very beautiful work.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Coriolis Force in Full Effect
I've been a long time fan of Alex de Grassi's guitar work and was quite intrigued to check out this new collaboration with Chilean instrumentalist Quique Cruz. Tatamonk, of course, finds de Grassi in top form but, much to my surprise, is also filled with a whole array of exotic Andean instruments such as charangos, kenas, kenachos, antara, toyos, ronroco, rondador and sikus. Piano, bass, drums and brass compliment all of these instruments and the results are scintillating! This CD has a whole array of soundscapes from "Auscencia" which incorporates a breathtaking melody to "Alba" which has a smoky bluesy feel to it to "Sanchaly" which is a tour de force that unites traditional South American rhythms with contemporary jazz improvisation. All in all, Tatamonk is a tasty fusion of North meets South. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Each and every song a jewel
I was given this CD when my son was born in 2003, and it truly has become the soundtrack to his life thus far.I can't reminisce about his babyhood without Alex Degrassi's melodies woven therein. Each and every song is a jewel: calming, relaxing, soothing (but Boo Mamba is my personal favorite). I was really disappointed to learn that this CD was going out of print, since I've given a copy to every single baby born in my family and circle of friends since it was given to me.It's definitely worth buying used, and even if someone is asking $20-odd for it, BUY IT! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Different Generation
I was not even born when Simon and Garfunkel wrote these beautiful songs.I did, however, grow up listening to these songs through my parents.Alex de Grassi captures the emotions of these songs perfectly. The tunes are so familiar and the guitar is very relaxing.I am 21 years old and I love the CD.

5-0 out of 5 stars Recommended for intense relaxation!
We first heard this CD in our Childbirth Education class. The sound of acoustic guitar is quite relaxing on its own, but the melody of Simon & Garfunkel's tunes was just familiar enough to really put you in a comfortable place. We just had to find out who the artist was. We're considering this or De Grassi's James Taylor during our labor and delivery.

4-0 out of 5 stars De Grassi reworks Simon & Garfunkel
Alex de Grassi does a superb job of capturing the unique sound of Simon & Garfunkel while adding his own New Age twist to this timeless music. The disc is haunting, uplifting and inspiring. The beauty of de Grassis'interpretation allows you to relax, anywhere, anytime to this wonderful music. My favorite time to listen to this disc is late on a Saturday afternoon alone, having a conversation with my wife.I hope if you purchase this disc you get great enjoyment from it as I have. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Best Fingerstyle CDs - Ever!
This cd is another great example of the amazing works of Alex De Grassi. When you listen closely, it feels like as if you are in a dream, floating in a dimension of your own, and time just pauses. A great addition to the music world. This is also a great New Age CD.If you are a fingerstyle fan who enjoys Don Ross or Tommy Emmanuel, you'll absolutely love this cd!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Long-Time James Taylor Fan
I was very pleasantly surprised to hear this beautiful collection of James Taylor's music.Alex De Grassi's guitar performance captures the smoothness of James' early hits of the late 60's through mid-70's. "How Sweet It Is", which was not composed by James Taylor, is not one of my favorite selections (although it is a favorite of many of James' fans).I would love to hear what de Grassi could have done with "Copperline" or "Walking Man".De Grassi's rendition of "You've Got a Friend" is superb!

Rough Guides billed this disc as going "beyond panpipes and ponchos", meaning they wanted it to be a sampler of some of the broader musical traditions of the Andes instead of just another "Andean flute music" CD.There's still a lot of pretty typical stuff here, but I guarantee you won't regret finding a copy of this disc. The beats are really addicting!5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing CD!
