Editorial Review

It is not just the timbre of Norah Jones's voice that is mature beyond her 22 years. Her assured phrasing and precise time are more often found in older singers as well. She is instantly recognizable, blending shades of Billie Holiday and Nina Simone without sounding like anyone but herself. Any way you slice it, she is a singer to be reckoned with. Her readings of the Hank Williams classic "Cold Cold Heart" and Hoagy Carmichael's "The Nearness of You" alone are worth the price of the CD. Jones's own material, while not bad, pales a bit next to such masterpieces. They might have fared better had she and producer Arif Mardin opted for some livelier arrangements, taking better advantage of brilliant sidemen such as Bill Frisell, Kevin Breit, and Brian Blade; or if the tunes had simply been given less laconic performances. Jones has all the tools; what will come with experience and some careful listening to artists like J.J. Cale and Shirley Horn is the knack of remaining low-key without sounding sleepy--sometimes less is not, in fact, more. Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars How to Market a Dead Man on a CD
This is a good example on how to market a dead man on his miss fortune and cash out on his miss "fortune like Rick Rubin did on this one. If you want to cry buy this discs because it will make you cry because it is highly depressing. I hope that Mr Rubin that God punish you for this one I do not want to play it again and if you could read my mind Rick for this job on a dead great artist like Johnny Cash. I hope you walk the line to his grave

5-0 out of 5 stars the man leaves the stage
I finally did it. Broke down and bought the last album that can be considered "real" by Mr. Cash. I kind of held off 'cause I knew it would feel like an admission that it's over. The well known story is ended. I knew it had but was in a sort of denial, 'cause Johnny made you feel like you really knew him and was your friend and I don't want to let my friend go. It's been such a grand ride, starting when I was a boy and hearing "A Boy Named Sue" and moving into different styles but always aware of the man in black and really finding him when he joined Highwaymen.
5-0 out of 5 stars Stunning departure album
The music industry indeed lost a bit of its soul with the passing of Johnny Cash. This album is a very spiritual one, almost as if Mr. Cash perhaps knew this would be his last chance to sing his heart. No other song spells this out that than 'Help Me'.

5-0 out of 5 stars Welcome relief
I first listened at my computer and found myself slowly relaxing and really enjoying the beautiful music but wondered if it would REALLY work since I find it very hard to get to sleep and stay asleep. Well, folks, if youhave doubts about it working, throw them out the window! I did not make it through Track 1! Not only that but when I woke 5 hours later and turned it on againhoping to just enjoy the music - right----didn't make it through Track 1 again and got another 2hours of sound sleep. This CD is a godsend for those of us who have trouble getting to sleep.I highly recommend you buy this CD - you'll never find a better deal.Kudos to the Mercurios and everyone associated with it who have given us this beautiful pair of CDs. I'm getting several for friends and family.
4-0 out of 5 stars I Haven't Heard the Second Half Yet..........
Usually, when I write a review, I like to let the songs play in the background, hoping that it will inspire me to some new revelation as I write. In this instance, though, I can't risk it; every single time I play either disk from this two-disk set, I start to drift off. I'm not kidding! For insomniacs, this collection could work better than Sominex. My normal procedure for any review is to listen straight through every note of music at least once, and then listen twice more, emphasizing the bits that made the deepest impression. Nearly a month ago, I thought I would do just that, but this disk threw that methodology right out of the window. For three weeks, I listened to this collection at home, at night, in the environment that it is intended for - my bedroom. For three weeks straight, I fell asleep before track five...

2-0 out of 5 stars Boring and tedious...
Producer Kevin Shirley accepts the fact that Steve Harris calls all the cards in the band and we all testified the "high" production values utilized by Steve Harris when he produced the band in "X-Factor" and "Virutal XI"... So, since "Brave New World" produciton is muddled, really bad and it never improves.
5-0 out of 5 stars Wow
I was hoping for a good return by the veterns. I was pleased and beyond. Dance of Death was an average album. It had a few moments but nothing compared to this cd. The rich melodies and twin guitar use is awesome.Yes the production isn't as clean as it could be. But that didn't hamper it to much for me. I know people are going to compare this to anything they have done in the past and say that (killers, number of the beast 7 son ..etc) is better. Well the 80's was the metal age, but old bands can still write good material. True some of it might get recycled but isn't that what all music becomes? Riff's are recycled or manipulated a little.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Musicians
As a person who LOVED Hopes and Fears, I didn't think they could do any better. I'm extremely pleased to say that I was wrong. This is the best album I've heard in years. It is complete from the first song to the last. I just love the fact that it's so different from what is out there (I don't own any coldplay or U2 albums so I can't say if they're similar). The lowest rating I would give any song is 8.5/10. Almost every song gets a 10/10. This album gives me goosebumps it's so good.

5-0 out of 5 stars WOW!
It is perhaps true that you don't like this album like Hopes and Fears in the first hearing, but, man ITIS SO MUCH BETTER THAN HOPES AND FEARS!! The frog prince, Crystall ball and Leaving so soon? are songs to make any band proud of their efforts. Tom Chaplin's vocals in The frog prince are simply awesome. There aren't many singers today that can sustain the chorus (Inherit the earth/ while your prince's crown) at such a high note. The music also is much better and varied than Hopes and Fears, where the songs were much similar from one to another (Listen to the intros of Somewhere only we know, Bend and break and Everybody's changing, for instance). Maybe, simply, I like the new darker and at times eerie sound of Under the Iron Sea more than its predecessor. After considering (and I still do) Hopes and Fears a five star album, I'd rate this one higher, if I could. I do really love this CD.

3-0 out of 5 stars Mediocre
This is not truly a step down from their last album. (I still believe it is above Coldplay.) But this album is too smooth. There are just too many weak clichés and earnest heartfelt vocals. There is nothing original here and the band lacks any real substance. That being said this is a very tolerable album and is not trash and while the other album was not great, not a single song on this album matches "Your Eyes Open" from their last."Is It Any Wonder?" is a little edgy but it feels extremely commercial as it gets old after several listens.

Editorial Review

This teaming of Linda Ronstadt and Cajun folk traditionalist Ann Savoy, billing themselves as the Zozo Sisters, shows how wide is the musical range of bittersweetness. The harmonies and shared lead vocals offer a complementary contrast between Ronstadt's purity of tone and Savoy's more piquant expressiveness. The arrangements turn folk songs into art songs, drawing as much upon chamber strings as Cajun fiddle and accordion. There's an exquisite beauty to the vocals, but the real surprise is how well the album holds together, given a range of material that extends from Cajun songs in French patois to stellar material from Julie Miller ("I Can't Get Over You," with husband Buddy Miller on guitar) and Richard Thompson ("King of Bohemia," "Burns' Supper") to a disarming revival of the Left Banke's 1960s hit "Walk Away Renee." Among other highlights, "Go Away from My Window" provides a showcase for the upper register of Ronstadt's soprano, and Savoy's lead vocals on Bill Monroe's "The One I Love Is Gone" bring out the blues in bluegrass. 5-0 out of 5 stars A Perfect Disc
Awsome, just plain awsome. Every song on here is a pure delight. Linda, if you are reading this then you should know you have put out a wonderful disc and we thank God for you being such a talented artist.
5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Songs
Ronstadt certainly did some nice work as a solo artist, but then she started doing albums with other artists (Trio and Trio II with Emmylou Harris and Dolly Parton and Western Wall with Harris). While those were fine albums, the blending of Rondstadt's voice in this album with that of Ann Savoy is just about as good as it gets. You will swear they are blood sisters when your hear how well the voices blend together.Rondstadt has finally found her musical soul mate in Ann Savoy and this may be some of her best work ever. I never heard of Ann Savoy, but she sure sounds wonderful with Rondstadt.

5-0 out of 5 stars Our own Carrie Underwood!!!
She is the best Idol so far and some day I hope to go to the American Idol tryouts and be just like her!!!
5-0 out of 5 stars Staying power beyond "Bubble Gum" pop....
Although I love watching new talent, I am not much for the hype of American Idol.Still, I saw enough of Carrie Underwood's performance in the competition to decide that I would give her album a shot, and it was definitely worth it!Likely intended as a country-pop album for a "younger" crowd, Carrie's first set of vocals is fun, moving, and powerful enough to cross generations.I can put this CD in and listen to it several times through before I even think about putting in something different.I find the title track to be somewhat annoying, but the rest of the effort is solid.Carrie shows us insightful hopefulness on "Wasted" and "Jesus Take the Wheel," butt-kicking authority on "Before He Cheats," and the pain of loss on "Starts with Goodbye".Overall, I think Carrie earned her AI title, and it should be interesting to see if she can reach Clarkson-like popularity. If you like Faith Hill, Shania Twain, and (of course) Kelly Clarkson, chances are you'll find at least a few tracks to love on "Some Hearts."

4-0 out of 5 stars The best Idol debut yet, and a great pop-country cross over
It was obvious during the top 12 of the fourth season of American Idol, that if Carrie didn't win, it would have been a huge upset. Good as Bo, or any of the others may or may not have been, Carrie was never in the bottom, almost always praised, and was cut out from way back to her audition to go far. She's pretty, and has a great voice to boot too, why wouldn't she win? Well she did win it, and it should have been obvious to everyone that her debut album would be country. It was just naturally her genre from the get go, which is one reason this album suceeds. Unlike many idol contestants, Carrie knew and everyone else knew exactly what genre she fit into, so sticking to her natural genre, and throwing in some pop crossover appeal, we get Some Hearts.

Editorial Review

Some singer/songwriters (think Paul Westerberg and Elliott Smith) develop their world-weariness through the unforgiving trials of passing years and the heart-breaking grind of the music business. Others (Van Morrison, Neil Young) seem to have sprung from out of nowhere with the fully formed soul of a life well-lived. Ray LaMontagne belongs with the latter. On this, his debut, LaMontagne has crafted a handful of quietly devastating meditations on life and love--and delivered them with a raspy vocal all his own. The simple, mournful lyrics of "Burn," "Shelter" and the title track recall a Hank Williams ballad, and the reserved production by alt-country/americana genius Ethan Johns (the Jayhawks, Ryan Adams, Kings of Leon) make this a great disc for smoky Saturday nights, and rainy Sunday mornings. 4-0 out of 5 stars And all you wanted was to run for cover (4.5)
When I use to think of Nelly Furtado I couldn't help but automtically start singing "I'm like a bird". That's all she ever was to me, the girl who sang the bird song. However, I heard, and I kid you not, a 4 second sound clip of Promiscuous in the middle of a store and right then decided I needed this CD. I stalled for the longest time though because I just knew it would be a waste of money. A sudden urge and extra cash summed up my purchase of this CD though. I don't regret it at all. Sure there are some parts that tend to drag a little more than I'd like but for the most part, Nelly has created something special with Loose.
1-0 out of 5 stars Nellie didn't reinvent herself
The music business did. Nellie Furtado is gorgeous, always has been, but I used to respect her music. The industry did the same thing to her as they did to Jewel. They took a fresh, folky act and transformed her into an electronic joke made to sound like everyone else with a top 40 record. That is a shame because she has a great deal of talent. Put her with Timberland and surprise, she's like Fergie and every other fake artist in the game. I know you're asking me what I know about the game. I haven't had many top 40 hits in my life, in fact I haven't had any, but I front some of the best cover bands in southeast Nebraska. My band is called Blisterpuss(the last part is pronounced like bus, but with a "p"). We do covers of bands like Dishwalla, Counting Crows and Live. People in the business have told us we need to be more like 98 degrees or Justin Timberlake if we are ever going to play venues like North Platte or Hamburg, Iowa. Granted, it's tempting to sell out to play places that bring in crowds over 100, but if we did that could we live with ourselves? Jabs might be able to because he seems destined for bigger things since he plays drums and bass guitar at the same time, but the rest of us don't want to compromise what makes us who we are. Sure, we could cover Hasselhoff and win crowds over in a heartbeat, but Hasselhoff's music is in a holy place we are not allowed to touch. So we crank out what we know and fans are all up on us.

4-0 out of 5 stars Gorgeous Choral Music
Eric Whitacre is an amazing composer. He uses just the right amount of tension and release in his chord structures, creating the kind of beauty in music that gives you goose bumps. Some of the cluster chords and progressions are absolutely breathtaking. If you have ever sung in a choir or enjoy choral music, you will understand and appreciate the talent used to sing cluster chords as in tune as the choir on this CD. I would highly recommend this CD to anyone who likes choral music and anyone else who would like to expand their level of music listening.

4-0 out of 5 stars Leave the Trench & Shades at Home
I am a 28-year-old mother of three and I'll have to admit, I just about went to the store in a trench coat and dark shades to buy this CD! I was thinking this was just too "teeny-bopper" for me. Yet, the Making the Band 3 series had me real curious to see what the final product would be. And to my surprise, this album was not a let down at all! I loved the first rack and it had me going all the way to the end! There are a few snoozers on the album, but for the most part, worth the buy (without the disguise).

2-0 out of 5 stars Lukewarm
I was a fan of the show and really liked all the girls that made the group. I think they are all very talented, beautiful, and are ready to work hard to make it in this business. With that said, I was rather disappointed with the CD.. Some of the tracks don't sound very "clean", they sound like drafts still rather than being polished. There are a couple of good tracks on there but I'm surprised that with the kind of talent that went into creating this record that it doesn't sound better. I don't think that's the girls' fault though but rather production.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent debut!! Definately worth the wait!
I first heard Danity Kane's songs on the show Making the Band 3. I watched the show religiously for the two seasons that these extremely talented girls have been there. I really liked the samples of the songs I heard so when I bought the album I was absolutely not disappointed. I love that it is so upbeat and fun(although there are a couple of slower songs). I constantly find myself dancing and rocking my head with the beat of these tracks(People in the cars next to me on the highway must think i'm insane)! I can honestly say that I really like every single song on this album A LOT! Diddy has really found magic in these 5 women. Their voices are absolutely beautiful and the mixture of them is entrancing! I can't wait to see what they create next! ... Read more

Editorial Review

Live country albums are relatively scarce these days, and that's regrettable.Granted, the studio is a remarkable place, yet there's something about a quality concert recording--the immediacy and raw interaction with the audience--that no studio effort can match. While most concert albums are recorded at one location, Kenny Chesney created this collection from tapes of five years of shows at various locales. The material reflects the past eight years of his career, including "How Forever Feels" from 1998, "She Thinks My Tractor's Sexy" from 1999, and "What I Need to Do" from 2000. "When the Sun Goes Down" comes complete with Uncle Kracker, who appeared on the single. There's an edgy version of 2005's "Beer in Mexico" and a remarkable performance of "Anything But Mine" in which a surprised Chesney stands by as the audience takes over the chorus. What's amazing is the blazing-hot consistency of the band throughout. While their backing reflects Chesney's arena-rock influences (no number is shorter than four minutes), his charisma, energetic presence, and ability to connect is pure country. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great live CD, BUT.......
there are several songs "missing" on this live CD! For one.....I am sooooo disappointed that Kenny's version of Conway Twitty's "Love to lay you down" did not make it onto the cd. :( Kenny says that they tried to record it, but it never came out "right". WHAT????? The few times I heard it live it was PERFECT!!!! I am sure other concert attendees would agree with me too! Kenny should have done a "double live" cd like Garth did. He has TOO many hits to just do 1 CD of 14 songs!
4-0 out of 5 stars great performance.....recording quality low
Kenny's performance is as good as it gets, however the mixing of this album could have been alot better. The way they did the crowd noise is annoying and the guitars sound like they are background music. When I bought this cd I also bought ac/dc live, I know what your thinking... but it was a disapointment to listen to a good quality live recording then listening to Live those songs again. Overall it is still worth buying.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Album!!
A great feel good, good times CD throughout...

5-0 out of 5 stars Great CD of a Cassic Show
I had trepidations about this revival. After hearing this CD, I want to get down to B'way ASAP to see it.This recording is wonderful. The few middling spots ("Sing" being the chief offender) are completely outweighed by the most complete recording of the piece, in proper order finally, and the exuberant cast performing a classic score.Charlotte D'Amboise my not have Donna MacKechnie's pipes, but her stirring rendition of "The Music and the Mirror" is a showstopper.Jason Tam's few moments of "Oh God I need this job..." are eloquent and subtle (wish we heard more from him on this disc). But the entire cast is euphoric in their eagerness to please and present character.Easily the best new Broadway recording since "Sweeney Todd" (and that's saying something).Go, go go.And buy, buy, buy. It's "One Singular Sensation."

3-0 out of 5 stars deja vu ???
I was really excited about this revival... and still want to go see it when I get back to the U.S., but in all honesty, this revival album sounds like -- errrrrrr, the original one, only at different tempos.
3-0 out of 5 stars What Who Did For Love?
I was really pumped for this revival...ACL is in my blood, but I can honestly say, I'm not sure why anymore. The guys, are amazing, they all are cast well, and handle their roles well (My roommate walked in on "I Can Do That" and thought I was listening to the OBC), but the girls are seriously lacking.I felt that Deidre Goodwin and Mara Davi were the two weakest (Anyone else notice Mara go flat during "At the Ballet"?), and Jessica Lee Goldyn as Val is way too ditzy, she may be a blonde, but she was smart enough to figure out she needed to get some body work done.Even more disapointing vocally was Charlotte D'Amboise, who really IS Cassie (Just look at her carrer), but sounds more like Katherine Hepburn during "Music and the Mirror." (Maybe we need a revival of "Coco")Then, when you get to he meat of it all, the amount on the recording is barely better than the OBC, there is more extension in the Montage, and more for Zach to have dialogue in, but that is MINIMAL compared to the lack of the song "And..." or the fact that "What I Did For Love" sounds more like a stereotypical sanitized 11'o Clock number ala "For Good."And, big suprise, Paul's monologue was left off (It may not be a song, but to reduce the role to just "Who Am I Anyway?" seems like a slight crime) The Orchestrations make some moments, like the opening sound way to polished to be a rehearsal piano. This was a mediocre recording, nothing to get really fired up over, but still above the level of only being useful as a coaster. ... Editorial Review

Barely out of high school when signed as the first act for Powered By Ramen's new Decaydance imprint, guitarist Ryan Ross and drummer Spencer Smith of Panic! at the Disco had previously cut their musical teeth in a local Las Vegas Blink 182 cover band. It's that familiar, contempo-punk-pop sensibility, bolstered by the amped-up emo-core ambitions of singer Brendan Urie (typified by the snarky gem "The Only Difference Between Martyrdom and Suicide is Press Coverage") that dominates the opening tracks of the album. It's a shrewd hook, one the band steadily expands -- sonically and lyrically -- thereafter. The nervous energy of "London Beckoned Songs About Money Written By Machines" is set off by sonic embroidery that's sounds as intriguing as the vocoder shtick of "Nails For Breakfast..." does dated. Yet "Camisado" quickly shakes up Supertramp's prog-pomp with a double-shot of modern punk-pop smarts, an alchemy the band and producer Mint Squire performs with similarly inventive, genre-blurring ambition (complete with a quasi-Grand Guignol "Intermission" nearly worthy of Queen) on "Lying is the Most Fun..." and such standouts as "But Its Better If You Do" and the arch delight "Build God, Then We'll Talk." Too many young bands are content slaves to fashion; this one has forged a promising debut by shrewdly taking fashion hostage, then standing it firmly on its head. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Good CD
I personally love this CD. It is a mix of rock and tech in a sense, and is different from other things that I've heard. My favorite songs from it were "The Only Difference Between Martyrdom and Suicide is Press Coverage", "Nails for Breakfast, Tacks for Snacks", "Time to Dance", "Camisado", and "There's a Good REason Why These Tables are Numbered Honey, You Just Haven't Thought of it Yet".
4-0 out of 5 stars Awesome!
This was awesome. My favorite songs were It's Time To Dance, Camisado, But It's Better If You Do, Build God Then We'll Talk, but my number one favorite song was I Constantly Thank God...
4-0 out of 5 stars Eh.
When the video for "I Write Sins, Not Tragedies" came out, I never bothered to watch it or listen to the song. When "But It's Better If You Do"'s video was released, it just seemed to pop up on almost every music station. I listened to it once or twice, thinking it's not that great. Suddenly, one day, (mind you, my friends had the album already) I was in love. I borrowed it from one of them and I'd been listening to it for about 2 days tops. Final opinion:
