Editorial Review

In choosing to cover the music of John Dowland (1563-1626), who is known as the "melancholy madrigalist" from his output of cheerful ditties like "Flow My Tears," Police bandleader Sting has entered into a whole new realm of austere eeriness. Originally inspired by the gift of a lute, the rock superstar and activist sings the songs, deliciously sweet and tender or spirited by turn, accompanying himself, with Edin Karamazov sitting on lute and archlute. For listeners accustomed to hearing material of this period interpreted by rigorously trained early music stylists, especially countertenors and the like, Sting's sometimes tight-jawed, chest-heavy vocals may seem amateurish. It's undeniable that in four-part harmonies, the singer, tightly overdubbed, comes across like a combination of the Swingle Singers and Queen (meaning Freddy Mercury and crew, NOT the first Elizabeth). But it's important to remember that music of this period was routinely heard as a casual diversion in private homes, even more often than at Court. It was considered a crucial social skill to be able to join in with an adequate degree of skill, but not everyone was able to negotiate the perilous melodic twists and turns typical of the era's music. With this in mind, the overall effect is of a candle-lit, postprandial entertainment in the home of an English gentleman. Muttered readings from Dowland's letters and brief snippets of sampled birdsong aside, it is a courageous effort, displaying heartfelt admiration for the composer and a considerable degree of earnest charm. --Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Gotta Wonder Why?
I knew this was going to be rough when Sting appeared on Studio 60 in a subtle plug to his new CD. C'mon, whose idea was it to have Sting play the lute on a national tv show? I thought it was a cheap plug in the show, even cheaper for the show then for Sting.
3-0 out of 5 stars good effort
I like Sting. And I like some renaissance music. So - lute plus Sting sounded like a good idea. It is a good idea, but about half of one. Unfortunately the tenor of Stings voice gets weary as the songs go on. Part of the problem is either the original music (though I don't know it) or Stings attempt to read it in a certain way. I like about half the cd...which is not bad. I think it might have been interesting to pair some of these songs with original Sting tunes. Glad to see him stretching, always happy to see an artist keep being an artist. His lute playing is enjoyable, even if pooh-poohed by purists. I'll be making my own mix of some of these songs with other Sting songs.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Renaissance Man
This album gives me new appreciation for 16th cent. music and poetry. After I heard it I went online and listened to more "professional" covers of Dowland's music. I honestly think that what Sting has accomplised is a very conversational, more accessible, album of songs than other classical attempts. It has a deep, earnest conviction that charges the music with an attractive passion; Sting deftly executes all the songs, with only a couple examples of a slightly roughened voice. But his voice has aged to perfect, albeit there are no Roxanne high notes here, and the Jonson cover "Have you seen the white lily grow" exhibits Stings amazing voice.Get this album, but dont forget that on iTunes there are a few exclusives, including the most beautiful lute version of 'Fields of Gold.' Go check it out! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars VERY OVERRATED........
I just don't get all the praise for this cd.I approached this project very enthusiastically and was very disappointed.
5-0 out of 5 stars I was questionable...
At first I wasnt sure what to expect from Christina this time around but she gave me a HUGE surprise with Back to Basics. The first cd is just as good as the 2nd. I must say that the 2nd disc inspired me to go to church! LOL thats how good her vocals are. She is inspiring and proves that she belongs in the music industry for years to come. Good job

5-0 out of 5 stars A remarkable CD set. Great songs, great voice, andgreat spirit.
This is a truly remarkable CD set. I grew up listening to Bessie Smith, Dinah Washington, Ella Fitzgerald, and the Motown singers (no, I'm not that old, I was just the guy dressed like a punk rocker, and liking the Sex Pistols, but actually loving classic Jazz, Blues, and R&B best after being introduced to them by a guy I became friendly with who was a music teacher). It is fairly remarkable to see this diminutive woman and pop phenom known for her slightly raunchy Hip-Hop songs show her true range. From the first time I heard Aguilera several years ago I thought: "This woman really has a set of pipes, I wonder if she'll ever begin to explore her full range." Well she has, and the result is wonderful. I have a feeling it must have been infuriating for her to be in the shadow of that Spears chick, the fellow Mouseketeer, who was all package but really didn't have the voice or style to sing anything real in any idiom. Aguilera pays homage to her antecedents; the numbers stylized versions, some deliberately recorded to simulate the kind of "in the can" sound you encounter when you hear an old Tin Pan Alley classic. Still, these songs remain hers. I am quite astounded. I doubt this album will appeal to many people much over forty. I think even octogenarians would be rocking in their walkers, if they gave it a chance, but that probably won't happen. What I hope is that Aguilera's fan base in their teens and early twenties will be inspired to listen to songs like Dinah Washington's version of "Cry Me a River" or Billie Holiday's "Mean To Me" and know where Aguilera is really coming from. Aguilera is a student of the Masters who came before her (she lays this out so well in the Hip-Hop styled intro), yet she can also deliver the goods. It gives me real hope. Not everything in the music business is, in the end, prepackaged, and there are those out there still carrying the torch and passing it on. Kudos to Aguilera! She may be a tiny woman, but she has a giant voice, and a real spirit. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars "Strait Country"... Just not 80's "Strait Country".
This CD doesn't appear to have any powerfully emotional songs in it, and then again it doesn't have many fastbeat songs either. Yet, at the same time, they somehow manage to (and may I say vaguely) keep the traditional country sound that makes him the king, with fiddles, and twangy guitars and all. Regardless of what you think about his music, Strait picks songs he can sing well, and the fact that theresfifteen new cuts instead of only 10? Thats a huge bonus that makes this CD worth it's five stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars George rolls out another GREAT ONE!!Highly recommended!!
George Strait only gets better with time. This is another one of those CDs I'll never get tired of hearing. If you are thinking about buying this CD think no longer just go with your instincts & buy now, you know George won't let you down!!!!

Editorial Review

Capitol raised a few eyebrows when they signed indie stalwarts the Decemberists. There's nothing blatantly commercial about the Portland quintet, from Colin Meloy's quavery voice and hyper-literate lyrics to the band's wide-ranging music, which encompasses baroque pop, prog rock, and dozens of other styles. Then again, he did once sing, "I was made for the stage," and those who've seen the group live know this to be true. Sure, they're storytellers, but they're entertainers, too--just not in the Top 40 sense. Never ones to play it safe, their major label debut takes its inspiration from a Japanese folk tale. It travels from the Replacements-style balladry of "The Crane Wife 3"--which joins words like "Each feather it fell from skin/'Til threadbare while she grew thin" to the melody from "Here Comes a Regular"--to the ELP hoedown of three-part epic "The Island" to the haunting duet between Meloy and Laura Veirs on "Yankee Bayonet (I Will Be Home Then)." It's an impressively eclectic effort that somehow manages to avoid sounding scattered. Co-produced by Chris Walla (Death Cab for Cutie) and Tucker Martine (the Long Winters), the Decemberists' fourth full-length is richer, less immediately catchy than its predecessor (there's nothing as bouncy here as Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars 3 and a half really....But Very Solid and Good
Right then let's get down too it.I'm not going to list the songs and what not as most reviewers have done so already and have pretty much nailed the jist of what they convey.
5-0 out of 5 stars They've Done It Again
I've been counting down the days till October 3rd, and when it finally arrived, I bribed my mom with cleaning my room to go to NYC Virgin Records and get me the new Decemberists album. I put it on my CD player, and I may hav had a small corinary stroke. I love all of Colin Meloy's stuff, including all the old albums and tarkio etc etc. but this CD was great. It still had that Decemberists backround, but was a little more poppy and maybe more major record label-ish. All I know, is that "The Crance Wife 3" and "Sons and Daughters" and "Summersong" will be my most played songs on my ipod within the next 2 months.

4-0 out of 5 stars Slight Disappointment
I really set myself up to be disappointed with The Crane Wife cause I bought the pre-release hype. After reading all the good words, I was expecting to be blown away. Then after a couple of listens I realized I had had tricked myself. The Decemberists aren't the kind of band that blows people away. The Decemberists are a band that charms you and soothes you with loving songcraft and theatrical whimsy. Crane Wife didn't inject directly into my blood stream like the infectious Picaresque (my first of the band's CDs). In fact, some two weeks later, Crane Wife is still slowly soaking in. I dont hear the adventuresome and free spirited Decemberists I've grown to love. In fact Collin even seems a little more uncertain in his singing on Crane Wife. Not the lyrics, just the execution. "When the War Came", "Yankee Bayonet" and "Shankhill Butchers" are standouts. 4 stars is being nice. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars For me a little Aaron Neville goes a long way
When I came across "Bring It On Home..The Soul Classics" I found that I simply could not resist. Here were 13 of the most memorable tunes in the history of soul being sung by a man who has been at his craft for more than 40 years.Sounded like a sure winner to me.Rather what I found was a disc that I would have to describe as a bit of a disappointment. This one is simply not all that it is cracked up to be.
5-0 out of 5 stars Liquid honey....
is Neville's voice.I recently saw him at a local venue, where he performed a lot of the music on this fine CD.I hadn't purchased any Neville music since his great jazz memories album, "Nature Boy" -- but I went right out and bought this.Neville's not afraid to remake Sam Cooke or Percy Sledge, and his take on "Stand By Me" and with Chris Botti's trumpet on a new mix for "Rainy Night In Georgia" permeate your thoughts and just about make you forget the originals.Neville did this CD as a tribute to Katrina victims, and his own family's difficulties as the result of the storm.A consummate performer, with a voice that just doesn't quit, Neville is even more at home with sould classics than he is with gospel or jazz.Run, don't walk, to buy this CD!

4-0 out of 5 stars Cover Songs With A Twist
There are quite a few albums lately with artists covering songs already made famous by other artists. This is one of the better ones because it's a totally new interpretation of older hits. It kicks off with the classic 'Rainy Night In Georgia' and you've never heard it done like this before. With the different arrangements, etc, it's totally awesome as is "Dock Of The Bay'. Neville's falsetto can be sometimes quite annoying but he keeps it slightly under wraps here. An album worth buying. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Man the Dixie Chicks suck
The Dixie Chicks are whiny losers, and I hate them. Natalie Maines is a pig, and she has a major attitude problem. I hate their new music, and I don't even like Bush. If I saw Natalie Maines I'd yell at her and tell her she sucked because she does. Do not buy this cd. It's bad music, and there a million better things to spend money on than supporting crappy people and paying good money for bad crappy music.
5-0 out of 5 stars Ya just don't get it...
do ya Natalie? The problem isn't your extreme dislike of Bush. The issue is your self indulgence - your insistence on stating your political opinions to a captive, PAYING audience. People are touchy about that kinda thing. Maybe they went a little overboard in their criticism. But they pay to hear you sing, NOT to hear about your politics. You're the Dixie Chicks - three of the most talented women ever to grace the music industry. So stop whining, get over it, and move ahead.

5-0 out of 5 stars Let the music do the talking

Editorial Review

When soul music is at its finest, a great vocalist can take you along on a journey into their sadness, loneliness, joy, and passion. When mixing that voice with horns, harmonies, and a bluesy Hammond organ, that same music can seamlessly travel across decades. Many new artists claim to accomplish that feat, but few are sincerely ageless and timeless: Corinne Bailey Rae has those qualities in spades. Rae--a newcomer out of Leeds, UK, with a gospel choir history--has created a self-titled CD that occasionally evokes the feeling of a '70s Bill Withers classic, while bringing inflections of Zero 7 and Alicia Keys to her grooves as well. Straight from track one, "Like a Star" displays a restrained soulfulness that shows her strengths through a whisper soft melody. Other standout cuts include the breakup-ache of "Till It Happens To You" and "Choux Pastry Heart," which discloses her jazz-affected timing and the level of powerful songwriting that she is capable of at her very best. In a day and age where a good voice alone can provide you with a golden ticket, it is refreshing to see that Rae has not only written or cowritten every song on her debut, she also contributes guitar, bass, keys, and percussion to the tracks. Her songs have some room to mature, but as a new recording artist in her mid-20s, so does she. Soul lovers, pass the word: this is one impressive debut. Read more

There once was a significant buzz surrounding Corinne Bailey Rae, but since the release of her self-titled debut, the hype has subsided to the point where it's now little more than a barely audible whisper.
4-0 out of 5 stars A twist of Jones, a dash of Melua
Corinne Bailey Rae's debut album serves to showcase a fresh new talent, and not only does she have a great voice, but she writes the songs, plays the guitars, bass, percussion, piano, organ and whatever else have you.The multi-faceted Jill-of-all-trades adds her own bluesy spin to each track, and with the minimal backing music you get to hear every word and inflection.

Janet Jackson opens her much-hyped, post-wardrobe-malfunction return to the studio with the following proclamation: "I've covered a lot in my 20 years, and I've uncovered a lot in my 20 years." There's a pause, then a giggle. And then comes an honest breakdown of this disc's DNA: "I want to have fun," chimes Janet (or J., or Miss Jackson if you're nasty and can remember that far back). Fun, then, is what we get. With a light heart, a light vocal touch, and no shortage of quips and unstaged-sounding between-song cut-ups, Janet and her Jermaine Dupri-helmed posse pull together a Sunday afternoon picnic of a disc: "Enjoy," among Read more

While the years have passed and artists have come and gone few have remained but a few. Janet Jackson has been around longer than most and this album is her celebration of how she's covered a lot in her 20 years. This CD is about having fun, not being serious, and just feeling great!

So u should definitly pick this up!!! U wont be sorry:)
4-0 out of 5 stars One of Janet's best
For the first time since her "Control" album Janet Jackson uses Executive Producers other than Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis; Jermaine Dupri takes the lead role this time around. I have Janet's entire disography so you can trust me when I say that this is one of her best albums to date. The lyrics aren't really deep or profound, the production isn't the best in the world, and she's very breathy with her voice, but there's something special about it. The album sticks with the listener long after hearing the tracks. Typically, a Janet Jackson album has some depth to it, some social issues, abuse, or even "taking control", but the subject matter on this album is very light. This is probably her simpliest album lyrically.

To fake or not to fake: That is the question consumers must answer for themselves in assessing this feat of aural Photoshopping: an "imaginary concert" created by combining recently discovered soundboard tapes of Ray Charles's vocals from a mid-'70s European show and newly recorded backing by the Count Basie Orchestra--the "ghost band," still on the road 22 years after Count's passing. Charles is in exceptional voice, singing the heck out of standards like "How Long Has This Been Going On?," Genius classics like "Busted," and pop covers like Melanie's "Look What They've Done to My Song." In 2006, Danger Mouse is King Midas of the music world. He has an uncanny knack for creating jagged, dense, frenzied beats and odd, eerie, vivid soundscapes that never compromise the music's natural flow. Meanwhile, rapper and singer Cee-Lo, a veteran of Atlanta's Dirty South scene, has never been one to be constrained by hip-hop conventions, and is a willing partner in adventure. The result is an intrepid psychedelic blend of pop, hip-hop, soul, and rock that consistently challenges and delights. It's no wonder that "Crazy," with its modest riff, irresistible hook, and disarming opening line ("I remember when, I remember, I remember when I lost my mind") became a worldwide Internet sensation a full six months before the official release of Read more

Positive, fun songs. Not complex, but enough to make you want to keep coming back.Good stuff!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great modern-soul.
I am a large fan of both Danger Mouse's production and Cee-Lo's crooning. Now, I admit, I prefer Cee-Lo's rapping to crooning, but the man does have a unique, and intriguingly appealing voice. Danger Mouse is like the RZA for a new millenium; everyone he works with, he knows how to provide the perfect production to compliment that artist. He's done it for MF DOOM, Jemini, the Gorillaz, and others; Danger Mouse is the best modern producer in the industry.
5-0 out of 5 stars A "RAGING SEA" of Music!
I don't want to rehash everything everyone's already said before, but all of the superlative reviews are true. This is one of those albums that the more you listen to it, the more AMAZING it becomes.I have been playing it nonstop in my car on the way to and from work since the day I bought it, and can't seem to get enough.I've always been a Cee-Lo fan, although I confess I was never really familiar with Danger Mouse.Cee-Lo's lyrics are exceptional-- I'd even go so far as to say profound, and coupled with Danger's beats, this album is on another level. My favorite track on this album is "Storm Coming".The beat is just epic in scope, and Cee-Lo really get's caught up in his rendition as the song builds to a crescendo. When he sings "When I sing it's a cyclone, I'm writing a RAGING sea" you FEEL it!That song is great played loud while coasting down a highway.Simply spectacular.Indeed, all the songs on this album are great, with one exception in my opinion- the opening track "Go Go Gadget Gospel".I love "Feng Shui," "Who Cares," "Smiley Faces," "St. Elsewhere" "Necromancer" and "Transformer".A truly outstanding album.Buy it!!!(Oh, by the way, the OutKast double album has NOTHING on this album.I thought Speakerboxx/The Love Below was mostly crap.St. Elsewhere is something wonderful.) ... To start, I find that whenever I mention Grey's Anatomy to a co-worker or friend, they ALWAYS say, " I LOVE that show!! And the music is SOOOO GOOOOOOD!!" You can't hit the nail on the head more than that. Grey's Anatomy prides itself on good music, so to say this cd is bad, well, that's just poor taste. If you go to the Grey's Anatomy website, they go so far as to list every song they're played on every episode. I can't believe they put together this CD and left off what I thought was the best song they used in the entire first season.Unfortunately, I do not know the title or the artist.I'm hoping someone else might be able to provide that information. All I remember is that the song was played in the very first episode (if I'm not mistaken) when Dr. Shepherd chose Melissa for the OR to operate on the teen beauty queen's aneurism.I only recall the repeated line of "put your hands in the fire".Any help?
5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing.
I am a huge fan of Grey's Anatomy, and one of the best parts of the show for me is the music. So when the soundtrack came out, I was really excited, even though I was really only familiar with about two of the songs they included. The first time I listened to it, I fell in love with a few of the songs, but a few of the others took awhile for me to get used to.The songs are all very different, with a wide variety of sounds and voices that you don't hear much on the radio, and it works. It is now my very favorite cd and I listen to it more than the rest of my cd's combined. It's that good. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Bundle up with Sarah this winter.
The great thing about this album is that being a Christmas/winter album, it feels authentic, and not like some lame way to cash in on a holiday. This is mainly because it was released in October, which makes it stand out, and also just because the music is so good."Wintersong" is full of great, wintery tunes.Heck, the cover of Joni Mitchell's "River" is worth the purchase alone, but the whole thing is great.
5-0 out of 5 stars My new Christmas Favorite!
My absolute favorite is "River"- I'm shocked that anyone could "do it" better then Joni Mitchell, but Sara McLachlan has such unbounded talent.I really liked the fact that her music suits so many different ages & tastes within my household.Definitely a CD we can all agree on this winter.

5-0 out of 5 stars Unexpectedly Haunting
for a "Holiday Season" album, but not really unexpected for a Sarah McLachlan album. Even with some of the more traditional Christmas songs she adds her own signature soulfullness that most fans have come to expect and savor. Her voice puts me in a trance. ... Read more

Born to be mild? Amos Lee's sophomore effort for Blue Note follows firmly in the gentle guitar strums of his well-received 2005 debut and opening slots for Norah Jones and Bob Dylan. Little has changed the second time around, which will come as a relief to those enthralled by his first release. He remains a sensitive sort, mixing his insightful, reflective lyrics with lovely, unforced melodies played by backing musicians that stay on low boil. These tunes go down as smoothly as hot chocolate on a cold day, yet Lee brings an unassuming sincerity to the proceedings with his cozy, amiable voice. Comparisons to Bill Withers and James Taylor are accurate if inevitable, but when the gospel organ quivers into "Skipping Stone," it's clear Lee isn't stuck in a folk-pop rut.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Follow Up CD to "Amos Lee"
I love this CD. I love the fact that Amos Lee is the type of artist who is true to his music and although he may not be considered "mainstream", music lovers will "get him" and his style. Sometimes, as I listen to the music of today,I get dishearted because I find no value in the music, no artistry. Well, "Supply and Demand" confirms to me that their is still real, thought provoking, moving, engaging, and creative artists around.Like his previous CD "Amos Lee", I love the lyrics in the songs."Shout Out Loud" is a great song to open with, and my teenagers ask me to play it over and over again...I have many favorites, including "Shout Out Loud", "Skipping Stone", "Supply and Demand", "Sweet Pea" ...o.k., I love the whole CD....In an age where you may get 1 or 2 songs on a CD that you really like, this CD is filled with songs you will love...Buy it, then enjoy!!!!
5-0 out of 5 stars Superb
This CD is a great follow up to his last CD. There are very few artists with the originality that Amos Lee has. If you enjoy any folk or easy listening this is a definite must to add to your collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is an entertaining new CD from Amos Lee
I love this new CD from Amos Lee.The first single is entitled Shout Out Loud. This song really puts me in a great mood. His guitar playing is so energetic here.My favorite track is Long Line Of Pain though. It is a beautiful song about personal loss and loneliness. Sympathize is an another highlight on this disc.Amos Lee's subtle voice is filled with compassion for people who are down on their luck.Southern Girl is Amos' tribute to thecharm of a girl from the south.Night Train is a very pretty love song. Skipping Stone is a bluesy sounding song about trying to move on after the loss of a loved one.Freedom is an interesting track. It is a reminder that the pursuit offreedom should not lead to violence. The lyrics of this song are true and thought provoking. Sweet Pea is a simple and sweet song about coming home to someone special.Careless is an excellent song about the betrayal of a friend.I love the feeling of loss and sense ofhurt in Amos' voice on this track. Supply and Demand is a very entertaining CD by a talented young musician and song writer. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I have faith in music again !!!!
Next to my wife, in my 48 years of life, music has been my passion. In recent times, its been very hard for me to find anything I like. The American music "powers to be" want to do nothing but shove hip hop, fluff & shallow "Pop Tarts" (Britney, Jessica Simpson, Paris Hilton & on & on & on.........) down our throats. FINALLY, after about 20 years, a breath of fresh air !!! I stumbled upon K T Tunstall channel surfing & came accross the tail end of her Soundstage concert televised on PBS about a month ago. I didn't know who she was at the time but was greatly impressed with the couple of songs I heard. I purchased the cd last week & by coincidence, heard she was coming to Buffalo last Friday (9-29-06). I listened to the CD & I couldn't believe my ears. This is the most talented artist to come along in ages. I can't get enough of this cd. The opening tune, "Other side of the world", is as beautiful of a song as your ever going to hear. The chord progressions & KT's sweet vocals send chills down my spine. The next tune, " Another place to fall", has a bit of an edge & shows another side of this multi talented artist. I'm not going to analyze each track, but they compliment each other well. The 2 more "up tempo" songs, "Black horse & the cherry tree" & "Suddenly I see", are excellent. Before I bought the cd, I read various reviews. I heard KT compared to Bonnie Raitt, Carole King, Melissa Etheridge among others. I was a little skeptical. I said to myself, no one can be THAT GOOD !!?? Well guess what, SHE IS. She's a genuine artist who pours everything she has into her music. A great writer, musician & most of all, singer. Oh, & I almost forgot, performer. My wife & I caught her show in Buffalo last week & it has to rank in the top 5 I've seen in my lifetime. Not alot of dancing around, no elaborate stage set up although she has a great band with her, no lasers or fancy lightshow, just her musical talent & thats enough to take you away.I HAVE FAITH IN MUSIC AGAIN !!!!!!!YES !!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally, some good music!
I am neither young nor hip.The music that today's kids listen to is grating on my ears.I have eclectic musical tastes, and listen to everything from classical, to jazz, to folk, to rock; but I can't stand hip hop, dance music, or Top-40 pop.Give me Frank Sinatra, Ray Charles, Stevie Ray Vaughn, or Pink Floyd.I have no use for Britney Spears, Jessica Simpson, or Diddy. In other words, I want more from my music than a beat you can dance to and some sexy choreography. In order to get my attention, music must have some depth to it.I want substance; not just superficial flash.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Album - Great singer/songwriter
I first saw KT Tunstall on a video on VH1 several months ago.I didn't know who she was, but I was really taken by the song "Black Horse and the Cherry Tree".I finally purchased the album a few weeks ago and am glad I did. While "Black Horse and Cherry Tree" is still my favorite, the album is filled with great music. She is refreshingly original, different from most of the manufactured pop songstresses currently on the airwaves. ... Over the last seven years, Mark Knopfler and Emmylou Harris quietly recorded an album by stealing "a few precious hours of studio time here and there," as the ex-Dire Straits singer/guitarist puts it. Good thing they kept it largely under wraps--expectations would have pushed through the clouds, especially as Knopfler conjured 10 of the 12 cuts, and Harris, who writes potently, but little, contributed two ("Love and Happiness," "Belle Starr"). Yet now that it's here,
