This may be his first album in over a decade, but veteran Detroit rock icon Bob Seger shows he's lost none of his signature songwriting chops, sense of blue collar yearning or distinctive vocal prowess during his record biz sabbatical. Rather than reinvent himself for a turbulent marketplace that's regressed from alt.rock to teeny-pop in his absence, Seger stays largely true to his roots here. I grew up in Detroit.I saw Bob Seger about a gajillion times with various bands.He rocked and we loved it, and we loved him.
Buy It Now!
This is his best work since the seventies. A case could be made for this being his best disc ever. Don't waste your time, just order it. If you have any Seger CDs or records that you like, you are going to love this one. I haven't been as taken with a Seger disc since Beautiful Loser (okay, Night Moves and Stranger in Town are pretty much awesome). No matter which one is your favorite, order this one because it will be one of your favorites after the first listen.

Disappointed
I got this CD because I loved their radio hits "Bring Me To Life" and "My Immortal." While those songs are beautiful, they are not representative of the rest of the album. Although I tried and tried to get into this CD, the hard rock teen goth style just isn't my cup of tea, and the lyrics are too depressing. If you are a fan of bands such as Linkin Park or Seether, you might enjoy this. However, if you only like "My Immortal" and "Bring Me To Life" because of Amy's powerful vocals, you'd be better off listening to Tori Amos or Sarah McLachlan.

October music
What else can I add that the other reviews haven't already said? For me music usually unlocks feelings and emotions that very often are tied to places in time and seasons. This album feels like October in Maine to me. October is without a doubt the best month there is and if you ever have to be in Maine, October is the best time to be there. This album evokes the early twilight and cool breezes coming off Casco Bay, moving through the autumn leaves. Really an amazing album. Amy Lee is an amazing vocalist and I'd recommend this album to anyone who has an inner goth.

Audioslave
Being a lover of great music, including the political genre of RATM as alot of you like to refer them as, and also Soundgarden and Temple of the Dog, and loving AudioSlave so much because of the devout attention they pay to the fact that they are a band and no one is going to do a solo CD, this CD jumped out as a fantastic result of guys loving what they do, collaborating in that and wanting to test the spiritual, blues, funk and rock envelope.Put some good headphones on, adjust your bass, treble, fade, etc. and listen to the words, the bassline, the drumbeat and the fact that without having to shove it down your throat or make a point, they CAN make you think. Rock snobs, do not apply.Cornell's voice is without a doubt at its best and he seems happy and content.

Another good album, no signs of fading here!!!!
I bought this album the day it came out, and the more you listen to it, the more it grows on you.Sure, nickelback has a sound that hasn't changed much from Silver Side Up, but that's what many good rock bands do, find a sound and continue to evolve it.This album is multiplatinum for a reason.It bridges gaps over many radio formats and listeners.SO they release different songs to different stations, have many fareweather fans, ect...that is what they are in the music business for, to get their music heard by anyone who wants to listen. I myself prefer the heavier songs on the album.But the album as a whole is pretty solid stuff.
Album Number 5 but sounds like "number 2" pun intended.
Title says enough. Rockstar is the last song on the album and it is being played on the top 40 stations. Change the title to Pop star. get them a cover on Teen Dreamz Magazine. "stay skinny"

I am so glad that Apple finally has gapless playback in iTunes 7.0 because I can finally hear this album in the way it is intended: no gaps and seamless segue between songs. I will have to buy one of the new iPods to get the same effect mobiile-wise.
"Hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way"
'Dark Side of the Moon' marks the point where Pink Floyd were catapulted from being a decent size rock/psychadelic band with a healthy following, into the realms of musical immortality. This album is an astonishing and groundbreaking achievement in terms of both its musical, and lyrical content.
I wish I could give this less than 5 stars, but...
it's too damn good.Dark Side of the Moon, perhaps more so than any other album in rock and roll history, tends to be liked because of a certain cool factor (possibly tied with Nevermind and Zeppelin IV).Every stoner and wannabe stoner will put this in their top 5 and say things like "It's a trip,maaaaan", while making to sure to wear a Dark Side T-shirt to let everybody know they have cool status.Nevertheless, I must give credit where it is due, and this truly is one of the most innovative and pleasing works of the past 50 years.In fact, the only Pink Floyd album that tops it IMO is The Wall, which I would rank as the single greatest album of all time.

Craig Finn loves books and bars. It's not just that he pinched the title of he Hold Steady's third album from the ultimate manual for boozehounds, Jack Kerouac's "On the Road" ("Boys and Girls in America have such a sad time together"), but that every leery line of every song is crammed with the wayward poetry and passion of someone who is more familiar with the bottom of a whiskey glass than the sun. Thanks to his raucous Brooklyn band, his music--louder than its predecessors this time, with a few more ballads--also happens to make a great soundtrack for an all-night bender where broken-hearts and broken bottles become one.Read more

nauseating
if i could give this music negative stars i would. no kidding i got nauseous listening to this band. i seriously was on the verge of losing my lunch as one song led into the next and i headed straight to the bathroom after being tortured by them all. a hard-to-believe reaction, i know -- i was wondering myself how it was possible to get physically sickened by a cd, but then i figured it out: it just goes in circles and circles and circles and circles and circles and circles and circles. HOLD STEADY? i WISH! it's TORTUROUS. on top of having a boring-as-hell voice, vocally this guy "sings" the SAME 2 or 3-note "melodies" for every song. wtf? + musicwise it's the same level of Abysmally Boring and Uninventive -- and let me repeat -- CIRCLES. the "band" does the exactly the same "music" for EVERY song. how can anyone say good things about these guys??? bravo to the other two reviewers who gave them one star. i'm happy to see that at least two people in the world have ears. it's astounding to me that crap like this gets recorded. even more astounding that crap like this generates fans.

Good for Hold Steady beginners
Okay, I didn't really care for Hold Steady's previous album, "Separation Sundays."It had great lyrics, but the musical side was lackluster and the lyrics, though the saving grace, were often hard to decipher."Boys and Girls in America" is, however, excellent.The lyrics maintain the same quality, and the musical end has improved drastically.If you've heard a little of the Hold Steady and don't get the appeal, check out this album.Or, if you're looking for a jump-off point, this is it.If you like this album, then you should look into "Separation Sundays," but I would advise going with this one first.

It's always entertaining....
Being an Eastsider a stone's throw from Sweet Payne Ave., I am once again thrilled to know solidarity with a (at one time local) band that makes room for a lot of life in their music--not just romantic idealism and not just defeatist nihilism--they tend to capture pieces of life's dialectic nature, which is nice, nice: Hope/Despair, Progress/Setback, Connection/Isolation--life that always ends in death, but death that has at least lost its sting.The Hold Steady continue to be who they are, you may or may not like them, but it is hard to judge or dismiss something this unapologetically unique.The more you demand likeability from music the less you'll probably like The Holdsteady--not because they aren't likeable, but because you'd be missing the point.This album is good alone and better when put in its narrative context (following Almost Killed Me and Sep. Sunday).I was pleased to get an update on the messed up teenage lives of Holly et al.And was especially glad to hear something resembling a ballad or two (First Night, Citrus, Arms and Hearts), Crucifixion Cruise got me wanting more of that.If you're not into or can't meet the demands of the recorded poetic/talk lyrics of an Ivy League grad, then I beseech you to see The Hold Steady in concert--I've been three times and can testify that what might be lacking in a snapshot recording is made up in the storytelling energy of the moment--stories are meant to be told not recorded after all. ... Boring and tedious...
Producer Kevin Shirley accepts the fact that Steve Harris calls all the cards in the band and we all testified the "high" production values utilized by Steve Harris when he produced the band in "X-Factor" and "Virutal XI"... So, since "Brave New World" produciton is muddled, really bad and it never improves.
Wow
I was hoping for a good return by the veterns. I was pleased and beyond. Dance of Death was an average album. It had a few moments but nothing compared to this cd. The rich melodies and twin guitar use is awesome.Yes the production isn't as clean as it could be. But that didn't hamper it to much for me. I know people are going to compare this to anything they have done in the past and say that (killers, number of the beast 7 son ..etc) is better. Well the 80's was the metal age, but old bands can still write good material. True some of it might get recycled but isn't that what all music becomes? Riff's are recycled or manipulated a little.

Never Gets Old
When you compile the list of the 10 albums you would want if you were stranded on a desert island, this one might possibly get the most votes. Not only is it one of the all-time greats, but it is a double album, which has to factor into it.

The Beatles last album just happens to be their best. Only the Beatles could get together one last time, dispite all the personal acrimony and substance abuse, and deliver the ultimate timeless swan song.

All I can tell you is that this is the way a swansong SHOULD sound.Even though they had major issues amongst each other at this time,they along with producer George Martin put out one hell of an album.This time around George Harrison came up with two of his best in "Something" and (my favorite song on the album) "Here Comes The Sun".Although John's heart wasn't truly in it,he still contributed "Come Together" and "She's So Heavy".Both songs are John Lennon classics .Paul's major additives were the infamous second side/second half medley,and a McCartney classic in "You Never Give Me Your Money" and it's reprise during the medley.It's mind boggling how a group can evolve from "I Want To Hold Your Hand" to "Here Comes The Sun" in six years.

Hi, my name's Joao, I have heard anything by this group from Starclub in Hamburg sessions to Twickenham outtakes and beyond to the Ringo Rotogravure and Wings @ the speed of sound and although this bunch is familiar for burning holes in people's pockets with their trite melodies (i would suggest maladies) and nonexistant depth in lyrics (think: 'I once had a girl', 'one to three four can I have a little more' and for instance 'because you're sweet and lovely girl I love you').
The greatest album from the greatest band
If I were trapped on a deserted island for eternity and could only have one album with me to pass the time, it would be the White Album. It is the most diverse, interesting and well crafted album ever made. The songs range from rock to country to surfer rock to heavy metal to folk to camp to progressive to the just plain weird. The unparelled songwriting genius of Lennon and McCartney is well on display here as is there obvious differences in style. Harrison also emerges on the White Album and showcases his best song ever "While My Guitar Gently Weeps". Some may point to "Sgt Pepper" as the Beatles crowning achievement, I point directly and emphatically to the White Album.

It is the very rare artist who is able to channel indignation and moral disgust in such a coherent and forceful way--without sacrificing any of the vivid imagery, passion, or the high level of musicality that we have come to expect from him over the past four decades. I kneel to Neil.
This is one Neil Young album that the majority of people will judge before they even hear it. Meaning, any anti-Bush, pro-USA, Neil fan will enjoy it. For the most part that's probably true. It is mostly track after track of ripping apart the Bush administration and war, yet also maintaining a sense of hope and love for the country. Lyrically that's what it is. Musically I find it's similar to his mid-90's album "Mirror Ball". It's rocking Neil for the most part, and appropriate for the topics. Not every song is a winner, but I really like the tracks "The Restless Consumer", "Let's Impeach The President", and "Lookin' For A Leader". Subtle? Not really, but I like it.

No throwaway songs here
When I read that the album was hastily put together I expected it to be rough around the edges. Electic Neil always sounds that way to me anyway. Part of the charm. What I did't expect was how musical it would be nor the depth of the lyrics. Surely some of his best work. Pretty amazing for an aging hippie of 61. Makes you wonder how good he'll be when he's 81.

tool is weird because it takes all the sounds I was alredy hearing in my head and is able to make it into a song. when I am coming down,(thanx hofman) that whole whine changing pitch is alredy in my head before I even herd this song. so Its getting a chance to reveb in my head. You dont just listine to it. there is an interaction there. it also amazes me how they get that sound. you can challange every band to make new material and you still wont be able to get that sound and it just wont happen. I also like when they try to put tool in a genre. tool should be its own classifacation until further justifacation on this revelation and plausible hesitation w/o retaliation or condemnation............tion

Not the best from Tool, but still leagues ahead of anyone else...
Tool are, of course, one of the greatest bands on the planet, and are therefore held to a higher standard than other ordinary 'rock groups'. I think its safe to say they've achieved cult status in the course of their career, and each new release is examined by the legions of Tool freaks like some mysterious artefact discovered on a distant planet. 10,000 days was highly anticipated (to put it mildly), and took its own sweet time getting here. Like many other Tool fans, I bought it immediately upon its release, and... was not disppointed. It doesn't cut as mercilessly as Lateralus, but after repeated listenings, I feel I am only beginning to penetrate its mysteries. A measure of its brilliance when most rock albums these days grow tired within a week or two. The band are incredible on this thing, particularly the guitarist, Adam Jones, who we can now consider as the leading master of the instrument. Maynard is Maynard, and does his thing like only he can. The songs are long, yes, but so what? A band this great needs room to explore and that's exactly what they do, taking us along for a wild ride in the process. Although it doesn't quite reach the heights of Lateralus (what does?) 10,000 Days is a fantastic album (in a really cool package) and no Tool fan will be disappointed. The only niggle I have is that there is a bit of filler on the album which shouldn't be there. Not after five years of navel-gazing and rumination (or were they actually working on their tans on the beaches of Majorca?). If there were two more great songs here instead of the noodling bits, this album would get 5 stars, no problemo. Let's just pray the next one comes a bit quicker... ... Read more

Amputate some songs...
If someone were to ask me the answer to today's Pink Floyd, my response might be The Mars Volta. With 2003's Deloused in the Comatorium, the galactic battlefield that is Omar A. Rodriguez-Lopez's guitar work ripped apart the common man while the saucy vocals of one Cedric Bixler Zavala put it all back together again. Their music was weird, trippy and, for the most part, frighteningly original.
Humans as ornaments
This is the first disc I've heard by The Mars Volta (TMV) and I can understand why this could be a negative experience for some. Piercing dissonant guitar tones that could shatter glass, odd time signatures and weird changes during a song usually turn most people off. Adding creepy shrieking sax playing and falsetto vocals that can warp your eardrums and sound Chipmunkish at times, and you have a difficult listen indeed. For me, TMV sound like a combination of Faith No More, King Crimson, and Santana. All songs on this disc, less the beginning and final track, are intriguing and the simple groove of "Meccamputechture" is infectious. The production suffers at times from audible distortion and the drums are buried in the mix, but these are only minor issues to an otherwise solid release. Definitely makes me want to check out more of their discs. ... Read more

The Cornerstone Of All That Came Behind It
My title says it all.As a music historian, the release of this album is one of my top 10 moments in the history of recorded music, because it did something that only a handful of other albums ever did - it changed the entire industry.Until 1967, albums by "youth-oriented" artists were rarely more than collections of singles and never seemed to have much flow or continuity - in other words, nothing more than miniature greatest hits collections.But on June 1 of 1967, the Beatles changed everything.Other artists were expanding their horizons as well - the Beach Boys had released Pet Sounds, a bold experiment of sounds mixed with songwriting we had never realized was possible from a young artist.But the mammoth success of Sergeant Pepper would make other albums like this marketable - and it would lead to other recording stars to become artists as much as entertainers.

Phobia
One of the best rock albums that I own. Just as good as We Are Not Alone and Saturate... probably even better.
Fear Phobia...
As a big fan of BB's first two albums, I found this one to be a little dissapointing.All of the songs sort of blend together in an un-exciting way.There are about 3 songs that I really enjoy on the album, and that is only because they had to grow on me after repetitive play.I think perhaps they have matured in the wrong direction, or not at all.

BB's PHOBIA : Should You Buy?
Breaking Benjamin in definately one of my top 10 bands of all times but I will never give a band bias for any reason .... With that being said.... Phobia to me seems like Breaking Benjamin tried too hard to compete with themselves.Songs like "So Cold", "Follow Me", "Break My Fall", and "Polyamorous" (from a different CD) gave Breaking Benjamin the flare that is oh so good. Little can be done to match their past music ... and yet they tried. They tried to completely change the guitar solos, vocals, beats, harmonics, and feel of each song so that their music would be as new and original as ever. I personally think they tried to hard but some people enjoy it. "Evil Angel"? nothing special...thats all I can say. "Had Enough"? Edgy and Upbeat, uses Ben's vocals at their best. In all its a descent song, I like it. "You Fight Me"? That exact point I was talking about earlier ... Tried desperately to be original and its just not Breaking Benjamin ...Also has some girly sounding vocals ... DOnt like it. Now, best for last."Diary of Jane"? Excellent song .. In my honest opinion, this is the only song on the entire CD that can compete with their old music. Different beat that works, edgy music and vocals that arent over the edge. Lyrics really dont do anything for me but I adore this song's feel and Diary of Jane is in my top 4 BB songs.
