5-0 out of 5 stars A mainstream release for Shanty Music?Thank You, Mr. Depp!
Hi friends, my name is Dean Calin, one of the singers with Bounding Main.We have released two CDs and are working on our third.I've been performing sea shanties since 1995 and am personal friends with many of the Big Name Performers in this genre.I love the traditional stuff and think that it is Important Music, both for our culture and history. That said, Bounding Main delivers traditional sea shanties and maritime music with arrangements for the modern ear. There are people out there like Tom Lewis and David HB Drake and Lee Murdock doing the songs the traditional way and doing them well.It was our choice to perform in Elizabethan mariner costumes (if you want to call us "pirates," okee-dokee) and to write and perform harmonic and theatrical arrangments. Some of the traditional performers are kvetching like mad about this CD:"Johnnie Depp is going to make tons of money with mainstream artists who don't even know what this music is about, when (this traditional artist) and (another traditional artist) have been out on the ships and the cold, getting wet and bringing the history to the people!"My take is that if Mssrs. Depp, Verbinski, et. al. can bring maritime music to the mainstream, it will only benefit ALL of us!
4-0 out of 5 stars Eclectic mix of singers and styles reinvigorates these ballads
The two-disc 'Rogue's Gallery' is a fun and rollicking collection of singers and styles. Forget that it could be misconstrued as a sloppy cash-in by Depp and Verbinksi from the 'Pirates of the Caribean' sequel (which it doesn't feel like) and, on listening, just take it as a reimagining of sea chanties and old english ballads. On first listen, it seemed as though the discs were thematically divergent, with disc 2 having more of the songs sung traditionally while disc 1 contained more individually flavoured covers. While the second disc is pleasant, it was the first disc that made the set worth its money. Some of the standout performances include Bono's aching 'A Dying Sailor to his Shipmates', Mark Anthony Thompson's earnest 'Haul Away Joe' and the nearly mechanical droning of 'Cap Cod Girls', by the fascinating Baby Gramps. Nick Cave returns to the bloody stomping grounds of his seminal 'Murder Ballads' as he does a burningly ferocious 'Fire Down Below', and Gavin Friday has the most fun with the sinfully hilarious 'Baltimore Whores'.
4-0 out of 5 stars Hilarious Responses To This Recording From Those "Traditionalists"
Nothing like reading the "purist" reviews of this collection, who seem to howl like hungry dogs who haven't eaten in a few days as they wrote, to give you a good laugh. The irony is, of course, that for people who claim they study this genre of music and are very familiar with it and advise you to seek out the "real" thing, they didn't do their own homework on who was producing this record or look at the list of artists who were on it. If they had, they would have found out that the producer is Hal Willner who has done this kind of "tribute" record, or better yet, reinterpretation for two decades.

4-0 out of 5 stars Hidden Gotcha
I liked this CD, but not every track.Beware, you cannot load it onto your computer.Had I known this, I would not have purchased the CD regardless of how much I like the soundtrack.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Music
Although O brother where art thou is not the best of Coen brother's films, this soundtrack is remarkable. "I' man of constant sorrow" is a logical hit, quite a catchy tune, but "Po Lazarus", "Big rock candy mountain" "I'll fly away" or "Down in the river to pray" give all sorts of bluegrass, country and gospel moods, all perfectly executed.
5-0 out of 5 stars A surprise!
I love this CD. Which is a shocker. I can't stand blue grass, don't even like country. But the quality of singing voices and the immpeckable instrumental execution makes me an admirer. I bought this cd because I watched the movie and Goerge Clooney's 'singing' performance made me laugh. I smile alot when listening to this cd. Very well done. ... Read more

We love this CD.The songs ring true even today - how important peace is, how we should treat our fellow man, how what we do effects everyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars A "Must Have" for Peter, Paul and Mary Fan's
I would like to Thank Amazon.com for carrying this CD, as it has many of the songs I listened to during my childhood along with some new songs. This is a great selection of songs from Peter, Paul and Mary it has some of my favorite songs Lemon Tree, 500 Miles, Puff the Magic Dragon and Stewball just to name a few.So if you are a "Peter, Paul and Mary Fan" you will want to purchase this CD as you won't be disappointed, you'll be glad you made the purchase as it will be a great addition to your CD collection!
5-0 out of 5 stars Enduring Legacy
Peter, Paul and Mary harken me back to a time when there was hope and trepidation.Whenever I hear their music I get misty eyed and it takes me to a place where there was a crackle in the air, the place of my youth where Bob Dylan, The Beatles, Donovan, Billy Preston (bless his soul)and all of the music that defined that era was awash with hope, anger, love and the possibility that we would change the world.I love them and listening to them now just re-inforces how good they were and how pertinent they were to their time and, to this day, endure and leave a wonderful legacy. ... I got Vol 1 and Vol 2. But my daughter doesn't like them. She prefers children singing. So it is not a successful purchase for us. I also agree with some other customers that one person singing all the songs is a little boring.

I love these cd's!(Volumes 1, 2 and 3) I had these songs on LP when I was a child, and treasured them.It is the same man singing, which I am very glad of.His voice is so easy to listen to, unlike some of the other kid's cd's that are out there. My daughter is 2 and she dances around the kitchen and sings along in the car whenever we have this music on.She loves them just as much as I did when I was young. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great Music in the Spirit of Oktoberfest
As manager of "The Oktoberfest Webring," I am always on the lookout for CD's of good Oktoberfest music. In this particular CD, all of the songs are played by the German Air Force Band and are taken from another CD entitled, "More German Military Marches & Polkas - Vol. II." As you might expect, most of the selections are not--strictly speaking--Oktoberfest numbers. However, they are played and sung in the light-hearted, breezy manner typical of Oktoberfest. In addition, the band and singers give top-notch performances. So, as a CD of Oktoberfest-like music, I give this product high marks. It would probably make great background music for any Oktoberfest.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Soundtrack to Chubby Lou's Life.
Every Oktober (that's German for "October") Chubby Lou throws his annual Oktoberfest celebration. It's quite well known in the south, as we go on a stint of "bier trinken" (that's german for drinking beer).Seeing Chubby Lou in his Lederhosen is quite possibly the greatest thing ever, it's more memorable than your first born child. His stomach sticks out and he doesn't care, he dances the night away with his chalice full of beer. Everyone makes it out, the whole sizzle chest crew (big frank, cheese grits and lupus fury) we all have superior dancing skills than anyone attending the party.Chubby Lou loves oktoberfest so much that we have to tell him that it's over, otherwise he won't stop celebrating, he once celebrated 3 months straight and lost his job, got evicted, and his car was repocessed, we all had good laughs after that. Chubby Lous mom holds down the cooking, nothing but schnitzel, bratwurst and sauerkraut, pommes frites (that's german for french fries) all night long, she loves it.The track that really puts the party in 6th gear is " Komm Und Tanz" we played this song and danced for 3 hours, the police were called to break the famous shin-dig up, but they always end up joining the party, who can resist fine ladies, german beer, and non stop polka tanzen (that's polka dancing in german). We usually round off the end of the celebration with a 6 hour tribute to Hasselhoff, and score like Robin Yount on 3-2 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th. Anyways, I hope you see now that this is a mandatory oktoberfest keep-sake.

4-0 out of 5 stars water-soaked tunes
In a very happy move Smithsonian Folkways has taken to plumbing Folkways' deep catalog for a series of "Classic" anthologies of American roots music. The previous five are variously focused on Southern styles: blues, bluegrass, and mountain music. In the sixth of the series, SF turns to a non-Southern genre which has passed into neglect in recent years: songs of salt- and freshwater sailors. These are not field recordings, but the work largely of revival singers, who include such familiar names as Dave Van Ronk, Paul Clayton, and Lead Belly, along with others not so well known. They are taken from albums released between 1951 and 1997.Read more

Editorial Review

By 1958 "Tom Dooley" was already in circulation in the growing folk movement, but it was the Kingston Trio's hit that ignited the boom. These three clean-cut Hawaii residents may not have looked like accomplished musicians, but they were.David Guard first learned the open-G Hawaiian guitar and took up the banjo after a Weaver's concert; lead singer Bob Shane was much influenced by Harry Belefonte, and he sang with studied clarity; and Nick Reynolds contributed steady, old-timey guitar and signature harmony. Most of what the neophyte needs is here:"Tom Dooley," "Greenback Dollar," and the Carter Family tune, "Worried Man." 4-0 out of 5 stars 8.9/10.0
IT was the coldest winter on record. Some of the guys and I from the Chase-Plaza construction site decided to hustle into one of the Village's basket clubs. We huddled together at a small table, coffees and creamers all around. Wooden chairs creaked under our weight, and the place was filled with a bustle so common to small restaurants- the clattering of plates and silverware, the beat of rubber soles upon wood floors.
5-0 out of 5 stars It's a long way from Highway 51 to Highway 61
But if you've stayed along for the ride, you've seen Bob Dylan progress from a bluesy folksinger to a full blown rock and roller, from a Minnesota kid from the sticks who took New York by storm, then the world. This is the record that started it all and it's as good as any Bob Dylan's ever put out. Yes It was a long way between those highways, a long trip, but for Bob Dylan those few short years were only the beginning and if you're new to Bob Dylan, this is the place to start, no matter what anybody says, because the best place to being is always the beginning, don'tcha know.

5-0 out of 5 stars Up Tempo and Slow, Sad and Promising
For me "House of the Rising Son" is the stand out song on this record, though they are all good. Bob Dylan without backup, just his guitar and harmonica.I particularly liked the up tempo "Talkin' New York." He nails that city, cold and promising, big, but with coffeehouses too. "Song to Woody" is a tearjerker if you know what it's about, sad even if you don't. Gotta love Bob Dylan's sound on this record, gotta be glad that he got a job in New York town. It's been an awful long time since I've played this record. I don't know why, because it's so good. I'm glad I came back to it for this short review. I'll be playing it more often, that's for sure. ... Read more

The reason why German albums sold in North America are so often compilations of beer-drinking songs such as this compilation of 14 all-time favorites from the Bavarian Beer Singers is that drinking beer is very important in Germany. Not because the beer is so good, indeed a good reason per se, but because it is a venue to socialize and enjoy the company of other people. All Germans know most if not all of these songs by heart--from "Trink, Trink, Brüderlein Trink" to "Ein Prosit der Gemütlichkeit"--and they can evoke homesickness or nostalgia. The liner notes give these instructions "How to enjoy this album": Read more

What I loved about this CD when I listened to the clips was that it sounded like a party and would make my Oktoberfest sound like even more of a blast than it was.It is everything I hoped it would be - WUNDERBAR!!!Perfect background music for an Oktoberfest Party!!!Just add sauerkraut and sausages, pretzels & beer, a good travel video of Oktoberfest, some blue and white streamers and balloons, a game of Dutch Blitz, throw in some swaying at the table and some line dancing to and from the kitchen, and finish with the Chicken Dance. Oom-pa-pa good!!!!

With his songwriting muse on pause, Bob Dylan spent the mid-'90s recording old folk and blues standards with just himself, a harmonica, and an acoustic guitar. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of Dylan's most underrated recordings, and unjustly trashed....
Dylan said after he recorded his 2 acoustic solo albums (Good As I Been to You and this one), critics wrote him off, saying he was done.He said it make feel so free and alive in a way he hadn't felt like in years. From now on, he could do just what he wanted. When Dylan toured in the 70's and 80's, he did mostly older material, with occasional new songs. On his current tours, he does whatever he wants for the most part, similar to the Grateful Dead and Phish, who did whatever song struck them at the time. While grunge was exploding, Dylan does 2 solo acoustic albums of old folk and blues standards. That's a beautiful thing.Dylan is always at his best when he follow his own voice. The songs here never date. They're incredibly haunting, and they're all brilliantly performed. Thanks, Bob...
4-0 out of 5 stars Above Par Dylan Opus
I'm not the world's biggest Dylan fan.Not to insult the man, but his unique style is definitely an acquired taste. However, I bought this album in order to acquire one song--"Love Henry"--after hearing it on a radio show featuring acoustic music.Gruesome folk tunes are a weakness of mine and a sub-genre unto themselves.(Bob's incomprehensible ramblings in the liner notes aside, this tale of unrequited love and bloody vengeance has been around for ages and, like many of these morbid gems, may have some basis in fact.)
5-0 out of 5 stars DYLAN'S BEST ALBUM SINCE NASHVILLE SKYLINE!
Dylan interperts these traditional blues and folk tunes as good as he interperts his own material. My favorites are Blood In My Eyes,Delia and Love Henry, but every song is a gem.

I actually heard this cd while having a root canal done at the dentist's office. I find the music so wonderful and the vocal segments are great. It does make you feel like you are walking the Appalachian Trail...and makes a root canal painless! ... Read more

Editorial Review

Despite denied claims that it's about marijuana, "Puff the Magic Dragon" now ranks as one of the finest children's songs in musical history. It's sung around campfires and in nursery schools to this very day (while still occasionally taking a tug at adults' heartstrings as well). So, it only made sense when Peter, Paul & Mary released this "kiddies" LP in 1969, beginning a trend they've returned to throughout their career. Mary Travers had indeed recently become a "mommy," and the trio celebrate here not only with a new version of their classic tune and the traditional "Mockingbird," but clever children's songs from the likes of Tom Paxton, Gilbert & Sullivan, and Shel Silverstein. 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent CD!!!!
I absolutely love this CD!!!My 5 month old son and I listen to it ALL the time.I am going to purchase "Peter, Paul and Mommy Too" here real soon.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sweet treat for all ages
This album is so wonderful for the whole family. We listen to it with our 1 year old and she loves it. We can play it over and over without getting tired of it. Such a difference from those saccharine kids' cds my friends play!! I hope that lots of people having kids now will get this album so we can teach the next generation that music doesn't have to be dumb or full of 'attitude' to be enjoyable. Beware, though: if you don't cry during "Puff The Magic Dragon" you should hurry to the doctor and have your heart checked!!

Editorial Review

Before Joan Baez, the closest thing to a white female folksinger was Jo Stafford. Baez made her professional debut in 1959 at the Newport Folk Festival and started recording for Vanguard the next year. Her early association with Bob Dylan and performances of his songs did him no harm. The material in this CD comes from later in her career, when she had left Vanguard for A&M. Listeners who enjoy this CD will probably want to hear her earlier work. She is among the classic American voices. Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Unfortunate
If you want just one CD that gives you an overview of Joan Baez's career and contains her greatest hits, well...you won't find one.Her career has been too long and varied for that. She was at Woodstock and at Live Aid.She covered traditional English, Spanish and French folk songs, protest and mainstream pop.
1-0 out of 5 stars Don't buy it for "Night They Drove Old Dixie Down"
I'm not particularly a Joan Baez fan.I just wanted the song "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down", which I've always loved.I saw that this CD was from A&M, which is a very respected recording company, so I thought I could trust that I was getting the recording of the song that I heard on the radio in the early 70's.Nowhere in Amazon's track list for this CD or on the CD insert itself does it say that this is a LIVE performance of the song.NOT the song that was on the radio. It's definitely inferior!I found the correct track on the CD "Blessed Are...", which was the album that the song first appeared on in August, 1971.She recorded that song for the VANGUARD label, not A&M!A&M doesn't have the rights to that recording and they stiff you with a live version.

Editorial Review

In the late 1950s and early 1960s, folk was one of the hottest trends in pop music--particularly among listeners who considered themselves too mature for teen fare--and the Kingston Trio were the hottest act in folk. The success of the trio's clean-cut, fun-filled, depoliticized presentation inspired lots of imitators (the Brothers Four, the Highwaymen, the Chad Mitchell Trio, etc.), but it also precipitated a backlash among those who considered such collegiate acts sterile and hungered for folk music that was more authentic and socially conscious. This comprehensive two-disc anthology puts the Kingston Trio's accomplishments in perspective but also suggests that they were something of a period piece. With their rousing harmonies, engaging personalities, and ear for catchy material, the trio earned their popularity through favorites such as "Everglades," "Where Have All the Flowers Gone?," and "Greenback Dollar" that still sound fresh today. Yet some of the humor directed toward their source material (Mexicans and rural Southerners) wouldn't pass contemporary standards of taste, while their ode to a not-very-attractive woman, "Take Her Out of Pity," is simply cringeworthy. Though the Kingston Trio were derided for their lack of authenticity, the more "credible" Peter, Paul & Mary were even more of a manufactured act, while even Bob Dylan soon ran afoul of the folk purists. Judged on its musical merits, the best of the Kingston Trio still sounds pretty good. Read more

Editorial Review

Woody Guthrie offered some sage advice in his liner notes to this collection of children's tunes. "Don't just buy this record and take it home so your kids can listen to it while you go off and do something else," the legendary folksinger counsels. Folk-music fans won't find it difficult to follow those directions. First released in 1956, Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Loved it in 1978; Still love it in 2006!
I originally purchased Songs to Grow on when my daughter was born . . . way back in 1978.I continue to sing many of those songs to her today."Grass, grass, grass, tree, tree, tree, leafy, leafy leaf, 1-2-3."I purchased three CDs so I could give them to my grand-nephew, grand-niece, and soon to be grand-daughter.The songs are not your typical children's songs, but they are much fun to sing and the kids love 'em!

4-0 out of 5 stars Much loved by all
My brother and sister-in-L are expecting twins in the UK and asked me to send this to them so that they can learn some of the tunes before the babies arrive. I was curious, so bought an extra copy for my music loving children (2 year old and 5 month old).My bro, as usual, was spot on. The CD is top notch with wonderful songs that we all love to listen to over and over again, both my children respond to it as do all my friends who I have given this to as a shower gift.

5-0 out of 5 stars Aptly Titled -- Easy and Fun to Sing
"Songs to Grow on for Mother and Child" is aptly titled. The first listen disappointed me sorely. The second pass through wasn't much more satisfying. Now, I love it.

5-0 out of 5 stars charming!
well recorded-strong voices. Great sound for this genre. Buy it if you like the shanties!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent CD, and well worth the price.
They picked a good selection of shanties for this CD. The recording is crisp and clear, and sounds decently authentic, if a bit too structured. The lack of instruments such as the concertina is an interesting touch, but the tracks sounds good without it. If you're looking to get into shanties, this is a great place to start. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sailing the Seas
This CD takes you on board with the sailors of old. One can picture them raising the sails and doing other hard labor chores singing these shanties. Some are upbeat and others have a melancholy feel, especially those sung as the sailors head out to sea.Life was hard on these ships, and the sailors' music and shanties helped make life more bearable. It is all so very authentic and done superbly by Johnny Collins and crew, who do not use accompanying music. If you love the sea, buy this CD. ... Read more
