5-0 out of 5 stars Heat... by way of the cool.
I bought their first album, La Revancha del Tango, on a whim when my favorite D.C. haunt, Olssons Books & Records, was playing them over the store's speakers. The store's music buyer, Werner, was always good at recommending music from classic blues to "electronica" and Revancha was haunting. It is *still* growing on me.While I was excited to learn about the new album, I was also a bit wary as Revancha was so very, very good.I am glad to say that Lunatico actually bests the first album. I am fond of thinking of music as venues so consider "Amor Porteño" a quietly intense tango bar, "Differente" its wildly exhilarating opposite, "Notas" your private living room's dance floor (you're embarrassed by how it makes you want to move), and "Celos" that first date cafe with the man you've been dreaming of... And kudos to them for their powerfully poignant "Paris, Texas" with its pounding drums and wrenching piano and accordion sounds. HIGHLY recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars SF under a groove..new dance music and beyond
Gotan Project is a nice example of good instrumentation in dance music right now. I bought this album because I love a good mix of tango fusion, electronica, and dance. The production is rich and writing is quite good and with interesting melodies from South America with that French touch electronica sound.

4-0 out of 5 stars A new approach to tango
I traveld to Argentina a month ago. One day before my arrival to Lima I entered a music store to get some tango albums. And I exit the store with three new CDs for my collection. This album was a arecommendation of the guy in the store. What a recommendation!

5-0 out of 5 stars Outsider inside out or outside in?
Stop the hating, folks! Just because the record doesn't match your preconceived notions of what you think the artist should do, doesn't mean you should lash out. Think of all the great musicians and other artists who were pilloried in their day for branching out in a new direction - only to have history vindicate their efforts! Think about it!

1-0 out of 5 stars pure rubbish...
I've been a fan of Dj Shadow from the very first album, and have followed him since then. I was super excited to see a new release from him, but upon seeing a few bad reviews, I had to investigate for myself. I sampled each track intently waiting for that wonderfully eclectic sound that Dj Shadow is so famous for... however I was never satisfied. This cd reminds me of a mix you might be handed after a rap concert. Its not worth going into analyzing each track, because its simply a waste of time. My only side 'comment' is that Dj Shadow has been in the game for so long that he probably tried something different, and it failed...just be patient and wait for the next (hopefully better) release.

4-0 out of 5 stars So it's not earlier Shadow...it's still a fine album
This album is quite a bit heavier with guest Hip Hop appearances than any of Shadow's previous work. I believe that explains all the negative reviews. Some Shadow fans simply aren't Hip Hop fans...sad as that may be (Q Tip was quite the nice suprise on this one). Those seeking the tripped out days of Entroducing won't find it here. That said, I still enjoy the hell out of this album. My only reason for not giving it 5 stars is that it didn't get me going quite enough for an immediate repeat listen; with the exception being Track 10...good stuff right there. My recommendation, take a sample listen to the tracks. Too "Hip Hop" for you?....then walk on, but I doubt that'll be the case. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars it's a good one...
It's not as good as the ones from 2ManyDjs but it's real close. The same idea is going on here though and it does have it's moments. The only reason I give the nod to 2manydjs is because their mashes and mixes had purpose behind them. The obvious example is mixing Dolly Parton's 9 to 5 with Destiny's Child's Independant Woman.
5-0 out of 5 stars Sounds of the Last 3 Decades
I love those late night infomercials for CD packages from Time-Life, you know like "sounds of the seventies" or "AM Gold." I love those infomercials because I don't have to sit through the entire song, I just hear the best parts and it gives me a memory from my childhood. This CD takes that idea a bit further. Not only do I get snippets of songs from the 70s, but there are songs included that were popular last month. All of it is swirled together and it don't stop.I've been facinated with "mash-ups" for quite a while, but this fills all of my want to hear any others. The pace of this disc keeps my attention the whole time.I have been listening to it so much I am a little afraid I'm going to memorize it and it will become predictable. There are some highlights: Notorious B.I.G. mixed with "Tiny Dancer," and my favorite, 2 LIVE Crew "We want some P****" playing over Pavement and Paul McCartney "Silly Love Songs."I love hearing Neutral Milk Hotel counting off at some point.I love hearing Ciara mixed in.M.I.A. sounds great in there at some point too.I don't know who does the song "Kryptonite," but on here it's great.I really hope to hear more from GIRL TALK and I hope it doesn't get popular enough to get pulled, maybe I shouldn't even be writing a review.Maybe I should give it a crappy review, but it rocks!

5-0 out of 5 stars The best record of the year
The title may seem a hasty assignment, but I have proclaimed (at last count) five different records that were supposed to be the best of the year. However, just when I think that the industry cannot surprise me beyond belief, artists keep doing it.

This soundtrack serves up a collision of musical styles, as if the coolest radio stations of Tokyo and New York had suddenly melded into a giant hybrid. The Teriyaki Boyz' opening title track is typical: brilliant production by the Neptunes, East-meets-West mood, more hipness than you can shake a stick at. The Japanese hip-hop group's other offering here, "Cho Large," isn't quite as good but fortunately it's the rare lame-ish track on a CD that overall keeps things on overdrive. Highlights include DJ Shadow's collaboration with Mos Def, "Six Days (Remix)"; Japanese girl surf experts 5.6.7.8's (already familiar to Read more

Even better than DJ Shadows Private Press (which is the second best album ever).

5-0 out of 5 stars Massive Attack's Finest Hour
Easily this ecclectic group's best album, "Mezzanine" is really a strong testament to how well developed this band's sound became up to this point in their carreer. Although this album suffers a bit on the back end, the first 4 tracks (skipping the 5th track) and then the 6th track are probably the best rapid succession of trip-hop (with a darker, more organic edge) songs one could wish to hear. My only complaint is that the final five songs can almost be dismissed although to do so would probably not allow the first bunch of songs shine as much as they do. ... Read more

I have loved this cd for many years and while I do not listen to it very often it is one of my favorites. It is the greatest cd to "get it on" to that I have ever heard.Try it and you will agree

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing
I recently discovered Portishead's music and I am absolutely amazed!Beth Gibbons voice is almost heavenly in nature and the production throughout "Dummy" perfectly compliments her soothing vocals. While not a CD to listen to on a bright, sunny day, "Dummy" is one of my favorite CD's at the moment and it sets a wonderfully dark mood. This is trip - hop at its best!

4-0 out of 5 stars It's a trip.
It looks like it's all been said about this album by now. Few would argue that "Dummy" is the essential Portishead disc, and possibly the epitome of the genre. Smooth, creepy, sexy, and hypnotic. It definitely sets a mood. The production and beats are a perfect match to Beth's vocals. If there was a hit here it would be "Sour Times", but the entire disc holds up to that track, and some are much better I think. This album seems to have no equal, and if it did I suppose it would be Massive Attack's "Mezzanine". Just opinion of course. If you suspect you might like this, you won't. You'll love it. ... Washington, D.C.'s Thievery Corporation purvey a very mellow, deliberately international mixture of sounds that might be called "lounge music"--not in the kitschy sense, but in the sense of a laid-back local bar (much like the one the duo happens to run) with no dance floor. Rob Garza and Eric Hilton are professed admirers of Brazilian music, and they're determined to inject as much warmth into electronic music as possible. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Finally
I finally got this album and it is exactly what I have been looking for: short tracks of relaxing trippy house. There are lots of middle eastern effects, which add to the music and rhythm of the album. It is just a joy to finally find a relaxing house album.

3-0 out of 5 stars Fun worldwide electroparty
The kind of album with many decent songs but few amazing ones, Mirror Conspiracy does fulfill on it's promise of one fluid world electronic mystique of an experience, if slightly generic and exploitive of it's supposed influences. Rationalizing aside, this still beats the beats of the majority slop passing for club music to these days. With enough variety to constitute Thievery's eclectic mix, this is good "chillout"(whatever people actually do when calling it that) music for fans already initiated into the Massive Attack legions of somewhat creative beat influenced work, neither overwhelming with innovation nor dulling with a lack thereof. One thing is certain, this unit could potentially have a sound that creates a far more compelling atmosphere then their chilled but less involving style more akin to this album's closer, but that is just my (way to serious for my own good) taste!

5-0 out of 5 stars Top 10 CD
The Mirror Conspiracy is another great blend of electronica, lounge, raga, afro-beat, latin-stylings and downright cool tunes. There are a lot of musical stylings going on. The World element really makes this album shine. I like the Jazzy element too, it reminds me a bit of "Air", "Spicehouse" and "Nuspirit Helsinki". If you're familiar with Thievery Corporation then you'll be familiar with their engrossing downbeat style and sound. If you're not familiar with Thievery Corporation - then you should be. There are a few points where the tracks jolt your ear because they don't blend into the album as well as the others. That said this cd is not one to miss. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars It pays to have a roommate with good taste in music
"Play" was my first introduction to Moby. I remember when I lived in Milwaukee in 1999, I had lived with three other people. One of my roommates had bought the original version of "Play" (which the version of the hit "South Side" did not have Gwen Stefani on vocals). My roommate would have "Play" on his stereo non-stop. It did not take me very long to fall in love with the album. I eventually acquired my own copy of "Play". Personally I think this is Moby's best album I have heard. After picking up few more of his cds, I noticed that "Play" picked up where "Everything is Wrong" left off with the gospel-infused techno sound. The majority of "Play" is good but there were a couple of misses. I hate saying this but Gwen Stefani has an annoying voice. I find her voice quite shrill. She totally ruins "South Side". I much prefer the original version which did not include her on the track. I was not really too keen on "Find My Baby" or "Bodyrock". Personally I absolutely loved the gospel infused "Why Does My Heart Feel so Bad?". It is a gorgeous ballad. Techno music rarely sounds emotional but in this particular case, the heartache in the gospel sample shines through. As overplayed as "Porcelain" was on various soundtracks and chill out compilations, I still love the beautiful melodies. The techno tracks are easily the best tracks on the cd while the more guitar orientated tracks were not as good. Nevertheless, I still consider "Play" a classic album in the electronic genre.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
"Play" is an excellent piece of work and a turning point for Moby as it introduces us to his ambient side.Certainly one of the best electronica albums in recent memory. The CD begins with a bang but the 2nd half flows to a mellow chillout state of mind.... Lately, there has been a great crop of electronic ambient releases, among them: Amethystium, Blank & Jones and Digital Moodz --all are highly recommended

5-0 out of 5 stars Impulse Purchase - Nice Surprise for a non-Moby fan
I purchased this CD a couple of years ago on a whim, after having read the reviews and being bombarded with his name during some election periods. While I don't agree with his political stance and methodologies, I don't let that affect my likes/dislikes in music.

3-0 out of 5 stars Felt Mountain Remains Far Away
If there's anyone else who found some things that were likeable about Black Cherry, but felt wholly disappointed to have lost the beautiful, haunting quality of Felt Mountain, despair further. This rehashing of 80's pop mixed with modern techno continues, inticating that the fame Goldfrapp found through Black Cherry has spurred them to continue the same sound. Unfortunately it appears that the enchantment of Goldfrapp's first CD won't be repeated, as its soft melodies never captured public interest the way Black Cherry did.

Though the downbeat electronica and laconic vocals of Cardiff-born Jem Griffiths find her lumbered with a "Dido-wannabe" tag, she's actually much more adventurous than that. On the whole, Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars just a note
If you're looking for the song "Amazing Life" by Jem that has been featured in a recent t.v. ad, see "Six Feet Under, Vol 2: Everything Ends". Amazon needs a better search engine...

5-0 out of 5 stars Good music all around
I'm not usually into this type of music, being a fan of rock, but I couldn't help falling in love with Jem's voice.
3-0 out of 5 stars A nice Sunday morning listen
I have only heard a Jem song before and it is the first song on this album. I enjoy this album and several songs do stand out, but after repetative listening you realize that most of the songs have a "sameness" and the tracks blur into each other. She has a good voice, but needs to expand her material.I look forward to her future albums. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars The 2nd Layer of DVD will not play in all machines.
Watch out!
5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for Massive Attack fans!!!
Great compilation of songs from Massive Attack, all of their singles plus new never release songs. The videos are great and their new single 'live with me' is a great song (very sad video though). Includes new version/remix of 'I want you' with madonna. The combo is great you can own ALL of the videos, is a lot of fun to see the videos from blue lines until 100th window from the 90s all the way to the new single, the changes in the way they used to make music videos. There's even the first video with Tricky).
5-0 out of 5 stars Massive!

Painless ... don't you wish you were famous?
5-0 out of 5 stars Flawless
Each track on this album has it's own immaculate sound. The powerful lyrics combined with the masterful mixes are utterly intense. The mixes are brilliant. I can't even think of which song I would list as my favorite b/c there is not one song that I would skip over. Simply transcendent You will be in awe when you listen to this album.

Editorial Review

French duo Air's debut album is a superlatively happy collection of experimental disco-mood sound nestled between ambient soundscape and breathy pop. It's jazzy and melodic, and mostly laid-back, but not excessively so. There are a few shake-it, shake-it numbers, too, like the absurdly daft hit "Sexy Boy." It's snap your fingers and hang out (while reading) music or dance around sexy-slow with your mate music. It's also the perfect music to do your ironing or some other chore to; it's hypnotizing wallpaper music. It slips in and out of your consciousness, forcing you to move around with a relaxed smile before you even realize it. Oh, and contrary to sampler fashion, Nicolas Godin and Jean Benoit Dunckel played the instruments themselves. Bravo. Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Didn't take me to the moon
this album just really didn't do it for me. i looove loooove loooove looooooooove Zero 7 and there are many comparisons of Air to Zero 7 and vice versa. but Zero 7 just has a better execution of their music and just kinda has this magic that Air doesn't possess.
5-0 out of 5 stars The best CD I've ever heard OR owned in my life.
It's the CD that keeps on giving, and giving, and giving! I bought this CD 8 years ago, and it STILL sounds fresh and current, Air actually made a timeless record the likes of "OK Computer". Serious. Whenever I buy a new CD case for my car, it's AUTOMATIC to keep the first space open for "Moon Safari". Whether you're driving at night, chilling with your chick/guy, throwing a party, or just feeling reflective, you won't find a better album then "Moon Safari".

5-0 out of 5 stars woth it just for "La Femme D'Argent"
I bought this CD after hearing the tune "La Femme D'Argent" as the background music on a very funny youtube video. These guys make some awesome music with old-school electronic instruments - moog, vocorder, etc.
