5-0 out of 5 stars Genuine Inspiration
We bought this CD, along with some others, for a driving trip through Colorado. This was by far our favorite. You need to listen carefully; the melodies are great, but more than that, each song has a clear message about life, choices, and how we treat one another on this journey. And, the CD displays each artist at their very best -- heartfelt and sincere.OUR top 3 song? Three Wooden Crosses, I Can Only Imagine, and The Little Girl; but these are followed closely by the other 14.A GREAT CD.We're getting more of these to share with family and friends.

Editorial Review

Barbara Mandrell hit her commercial peak in the early 1980s, when her only serious rival as the queen of country-pop crossover was Olivia Newton-John. With her TV variety series, glitzy stage show, and commercial success, some questioned whether Mandrell was country at all, though she reasserted her loyalty when she recorded "I Was Country When Country Wasn't Cool," revived here as a kickoff duet by Reba McEntire and Kenny Chesney. The range of artistry assembled for this trans-generational tribute suggests that Mandrell's music remains deeply loved and widely influential, almost a decade after her retirement from music. Younger artists such as Terri Clark ("Singing Single in a Double Bed"), Brad Paisley ("In Times Like These"), and Dierks Bentley ("Fast Lanes and Country Roads") bring a hard-rocking edge to Mandrell hits, though Gretchen Wilson plays against type with the steel-guitar weeper "The Midnight Oil." Mandrell drew inspiration from outside country as well, as LeAnn Rimes reminds us with the string-drenched, rhythm & blues balladry of "If Loving You Is Wrong, I Don't Wanna Be Right," as does CeCe Winans with the sweeping gospel finale, "He Set My Life to Music." Best of all is the teaming of Willie Nelson and Shelby Lynne on the tender "This Time I Almost Made It." Read more

I just got this and it is the best,You all did her justice.I miss Barbara but this is a way to keep her with us still. You all rock and Reba sister friend you rock

5-0 out of 5 stars LONG overdue
This project has been long overdue for this multi-talented, versatile entertainer. The mere fact that every artist contributing to this CD is either a current giant or a legend in the Country Music industry speaks volumes about Barbara's influence in the genre.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great tribute to a missed artist
Since Barbara Mandrell retired in 1997, she has been badly missed by her fans. Having been a fan since 1981, I for one have missed hearing anything new from her. It was great to hear that this new tribute album was coming out. For most part the artists on the album do a great job. The only two songs that I feel are not so hot are Terri Clark's "Sleeping Single In A Double Bed" which sounds very lifeless, a surprise considering Clark is a huge Mandrell fan. The other less than stellar selection is Sara Evan's "Crackers" which again, sounds very lifeless. Reba McEntire & Kenny Chesney do a great job on "Country When Country Wasn't Cool" as does Lorrie Morgan on "That's What Friends Are For". I also liked Brad Paisley's price increase of the nickle candybar on "In Times Like These". Randy Owen of Alabama does a good job on "Years" but Mandrell's version remains the definitive version.

Editorial Review

Given their impact on generations of country, country-rock, and bluegrass acts, it's amazing the Louvins haven't had a modern tribute before. Unlike tribute albums that stumble through inconsistent performances and ill-matched material, this one soars, the selections well matched to the paired artists. Joe Nichols and Rhonda Vincent capture "Cash on the Barrelhead's" sassy humor. Emmylou Harris--who spearheaded the Louvin revival--and Rodney Crowell are relaxed on the Louvin hit "My Baby's Gone." Merle Haggard and the album's producer Carl Jackson capture the anguish of "Must You Throw Dirt in My Face." Glen Campbell and Leslie Satcher wring maximum passion from "When I Stop Dreaming." Obscure gospel tunes receive equally stellar treatment. "Keep Your Eyes on Jesus" teams Pam Tillis with Johnny Cash (handling the recitation) and the Jordanaires. Marty Stuart and Del McCoury establish the Louvins' bluegrass ties on "Let Us Travel, Travel On." By seamlessly blending traditional and modern Jackson's created a magnificent tribute that doubles as a fine introduction to the Louvins' earthy, breathtaking majesty. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT covers of Louvin material!
I'll just pile on here and echo what everybody else is saying. This is one of the best CDs I've bought in a long time. The matching of singers with material is perfect. The harmony singing is imaginative and spot on. The instrumentation is hot when it needs to be and always appropriate. The differing voices make for a nice variety as you move through the songs. Charlie and Ira would surely be proud of what's been done with their music on this CD.
5-0 out of 5 stars Truly wonderful album
This album has become the one I listen to most often. Each song conveys deep meaning, each of the artists truly were inspired. I listen to EmmyLou Harris, if you like her work(from early to present) or that of Gram Parsons, I think this album will be enjoyable for you

5-0 out of 5 stars Lov'in the Louvin Brothers
This album is like prime rib, every bite of it is juicy and flavorful. The duets are fresh, inspired and fun. It's country music at its best: simple, straight forward and foot stompin' good. If this album doesn't spring you to life, better check the pacemaker. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Not Bad At All,
This is a pretty decent cd. The music is beautifully done and it is awesome. It might be a little slow, but it is relaxing. there is only one song i really liked on this cd and it is, Wich Of Couse, Amazing Grace.

5-0 out of 5 stars Country at its best!
This Cd is awesome I've had it for quite some time. Shenandoah does one of my fav versions of Beulah Land. A blessing everytime I listen to it......STILL!

5-0 out of 5 stars Slow, maybe, but Beautifully Slow
I honestly don't understand why anyone would want to hear "Amazing Grace" any other way but slow.Lari White sings it beautifully, with reverence. That's the way most of these tracks are.The females are the highlight.Lari White, Martina McBride, Susan Ashton, Allison Krause, and of course Emmylou. The production values are better than you can find on anycountry gospel album.I think Martina McBride's "How Great Thou Art" is being played on loudspeaker at the pearly gates for eternity.I'm not overly religious or emotional, but this album sooths my soul and brings a tear to my eye. ... Editorial Review

Where so many duet projects seem like shotgun marriages, this one sounds like a labor of love, celebrating Southern music as a common denominator that transcends racial and categorical divides. Among the highlights, the pairing of Lyle Lovett and Al Green finds revelation within the funky groove of "Funny How Time Slips Away," while the album-closing "Patches"--with George Jones playing father to B.B. King's son--achieves a spine-tingling majesty. Though Natalie Cole and Reba McEntire misconnect on "Since I Fell for You," Sam Moore (of Sam & Dave) and the late Conway Twitty are at their soulful best on "Rainy Night in Georgia." Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Natural High for "Cover" Junkies
I recently rediscovered this musical gem (on CD), and now I know why I wore out two cassette versions in the 1990s. As someone who doesn't often listen to songs recorded after 1979, I've become addicted to new twists on old favorites. When these voices combine, the angels weep. RCB is among my top five faves of all time!

3-0 out of 5 stars Passable copies - little to impress overall in interpretations
The Eagles while they may have been country in origin were ultimately class purveyors of pop music that like Fleetwood Mac of the 1970s was an easy fit onto AM radio channels or programming. This CD in providing a number of country artistes (not all well known) the opportunity of doing covers of Eagles songs thus could have been an interesting "back to the roots" concept.
2-0 out of 5 stars The Trouble With Tributes
The trouble with all-star tribute albums to past superstar artists and bands is that oftentimes they are done purely for money, attention, and a sense that certain of those artists can one-up the artists being paid the "tribute" to; and often, the results don't come close to measuring up to the originals.Such, I'm afraid, is the case with the 1993 COMMON THREADS album, where Nashville artists give their props to that renegade bunch of desperados who occupied the Hotel California for most of the 1970s, the Eagles.
4-0 out of 5 stars Nearly Flawless Covers
I picked up "Common Thread:The Songs Of The Eagles" when it originally came out.Back then, I was a sucker for Nashville's commercial country engine and this album seemed to fit the bill.Laden with 90's Country stars, I figured this album would be great.Of course, back then I thought it was. However, my tastes have changed over the years and my love of commercial Nashville has turned into hatred.Posers like Mr. and Mrs. Faith Hill, Big and Rich, and Shania Twain have stolen the spotlight from real Country artists by cranking out easy-to-digest pop songs and passing them off as Country.Even with my transformation though, I've grown to love this particular album more over time.In fact, most of the artists on this project have either been drawn deeper into traditional Country or their careers have faded into dust.I guess Nashville got lucky on this album by picking artists that weren't molded for stardom but found it in their own right.

4-0 out of 5 stars Missing Some Major Duets!!
These tracks are all excellent but frankly several major country duets are not here!! Where on earth are Kenny Rogers and Dottie West??Instead we get Rogers with Sheena Easton and the Rogers/Easton combo makes it almost entirely a pop recording and it should not be on this package. Buck Owens & Rose Maddox have a track but where is Buck with his far more famous duet partner Susan Raye? The Merle Haggard - Janie Fricke track should not have been included since she really only just sings harmony on the record. Why aren't Jimmy Wakely & Margaret Whiting who started the male/female star duet craze in 1949 with Slipping Around here or Kitty Wells & Red Foley, the first superstar duet? And where are Ferlin Husky & Jean Shepard, Jack Greene & Jeannie Seely, David Houston & Barbara Mandrell, Bobby Bare & Skeeter Davis, Roy Drusky & Priscilla Mitchell, Don Gibson & Dottie West, Johnny Duncan & Janie Fricke,to name just a few of the famous country duos of yore.Instead we have too many tracks with the same artists here. It's a very good package but it should have been a great and classic one. ... All that's right with modern country and all that's wrong withmodern country in one cellophane wrapper. You can't deny the currentroster of talented, enthusiastic, and charismatic performers. On theother hand, the omnipresent rock beats and slick production seem toindicate a lack of trust in the talent. As a result, artists with aless-polished approach--BR5-49, Patty Loveless, Lee Roy Parnell--standapart from the pack. Choosing material in modern Nashville is also acrapshoot, as evidenced by lines such as: "Going through the BigD, I don't mean Dallas / I can't believe what the judge had to tell us/ I got the jeep and she got the palace." 5-0 out of 5 stars Two Magnificent and Historically Accurate Song Cycles About the American South
I accidentally ran into the cassette version of "The Story of Jesse James" probably shortly after the cassette was released. My 35 year old daughter remembers well hearing it played over and over again, when she was a child. Naturally, the tape finally wore out and I had no idea where to find another copy. I felt an unbelievable sense of loss because of this for many years, until I recently decided to search "Jesse" on Amazon.com, hoping to find that it had been re-released as a CD.
5-0 out of 5 stars A secret treasure!
I bought "The legend of Jesse James" vinyl LP in 1980 when I was 17 and was immediately struck by the solid writing, emotional narrative and excellent musicianship found on this concept album.I remember "One more shot" got some airplay on country radio stations at the time, but without the rest of the album to provide the appropriate context, the single didn't have much impact. One listen to the entire album, and it's hard not to be impressed by this collection of country/folk/rock jewels.
5-0 out of 5 stars The CD to save if your house was on fire!
White Mansions and especially The Legend of Jesse James gives me chills when I listen to it. I grew up in Clay County,Missouri right up the road from the James Farm. This music is so authentic in the style and the way the voices sound as if they are truly Missouri locals. Anybody who knows the true outlaw story of the James Boys knows this cd is so dead on it will make the hair stand up on the back of your neck. Jesse James is not just a train robber but a true southern farmer turned guerilla who just wanted his money back from the Yankee Feds. This CD has the best I believe of Waylon & Jessi, Johnny Cash and Levon Helm singing in a southern rock style that will have you swilling sweetea out of a mason jar. If you like hog callers and mules, tobacco and whiskey culture and realize the Civil War really started on the southern Frontier in Missouri, buy this you will play it for years!!! ... Read more

It’s Joan Osborne who sums it up best in the promotional material accompanying this tribute album: " Dolly Parton is a gifted artist cleverly disguised as a media superstar and sex bomb." Osborne’s got it right. Beyond and beneath Parton’s well-publicized and oft-caricatured curves and angles, lurks the heart and soul of one of modern country music’s very best songwriters--Read more

Editorial Review

Ray Benson's Asleep At The Wheel deserve admiration for keeping alive the sounds of western swing, but with a rhythm section that's usually straight-up-and-down stiff, The Wheel's recordings mainly just leave you craving their inspirations. The 18-song Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Texas Swing
Tribute to the Music of Bob Wills & the Texas Playboys was definitely toe tapping music.Just a wonder rendition of songs to put you in a good mood

4-0 out of 5 stars Well worth itwith a lot more than What Amazon tells You
Ray Benson and various aggregations of Asleep at the Wheel have been making records for almost 30 years now. The truth is that there are a bunch of standards of Western Swing that just have to be done and done again. Recently he has tried to get the variety in by doing live albums, and so-called tribute albums like this one, a tribute to Bob Wills. They are a nice excuse to do covers of Bob Wills Songs that Asleep at the Wheel has already recorded.Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Good Old Country Gospel
I was very disappointed in CD.Way to hillbilly for me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sing-A-Long
I got this collection for my husband several years ago as a cassette and he listened to it so much he finally broke the tape! I was thrilled to find it on CD to replace it, and got one for my Dad too who loves to sing along with gospel music like the Gaithers, et al. It has all the well-known favorites. If you like "O Brother, Where Art Thou," you'll love this collection. Even our 17 year old son (who prefers rock music) likes to sing along with these songs. Can someone say, "Amen!"

5-0 out of 5 stars A great compliation of country gospel.
This CD has all the country gospel songs I remember from the small churchI grew up in.I listen to a few of these songs and I'm in an upbeat moodthe rest of the day.It was difficult for me to find the CD that had abroad selection of classic gospel sung in a classic country style, but Ifinally found it in this CD. ... Editorial Review

As the Man in Black celebrates his 70th birthday, he looks back on a career not only of legendary performances, but of remarkable songs that capture a bygone America, in vignettes of trains, rivers, rebels, street-corner shoeshine boys, and displaced lovers, moving on, never to return. To honor that contribution, now part of America's musical heritage, more than a dozen luminaries of country, rock, and folk--including Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, and Sheryl Crow--gather to interpret Cash's word portraits of the downtrodden and disenfranchised. Nearly every performance is a keeper, though some deliver a special thrill: Dylan introducing his rendition of "Train of Love" as a song he used to sing before he ever wrote songs himself; Little Richard turning "Get Rhythm" into even more of a rockabilly raver; and Cash's daughter, Rosanne, giving "I Still Miss Someone" a clean, sweet reading that underscores its poignant message. Yet it's Springsteen, in a cover of "Give My Love to Rose," who comes to own the project, laying bare the pain, hope, spirituality, love, and despair that Cash wove into the framework of almost all of his songs. An extraordinary set from, yes, kindred spirits all. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous Tribute Album
I heard Emmylou Harris, Sheryl Crow and Mary Chapin Carpenter perform "Flesh and Blood" during a televised tribute to Johnny Cash.I became "obsessed" with finding this song.Unable to download the song any of the music services, I purchased the entire CD from Amazon. This is arguably one of the BEST tribute CDs I have ever heard. While maintaining the flavor of Johnny's music, each artist takes the song and makes it their own. This is not "Johnny Cash Karaoke."It is some of the best artists in country, pop, folk and blues honoring The Man In Black.Among my favorites (though I like all the songs) are Travis Tritts slow and emotional rendition of "I Walk the Line" and Dwight Yoakum's hillbilly rock on "Understand Your Man."I've never been a fan of Hank Williams, Jr. but LOVE his version of "Big River."I am thankful I wasn't able to just download "Flesh and Blood" or I would have missed what has become one of my absolute favorite CDs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Little Richard Rocks!!!
This is a great album - a wonderful selection of Cash treasures and treasured artists, masterfully produced by Marty Stuart. He said he had to fight to get rock pioneer Little Richard into the studio.Well the fight was well worth it.Although Little Richard makes 'Get Rhythm' a rock 'n' roll track, it is a wonderful tribute to Cash as a songwriter. And if you like rock 'n' roll, this is the only track you'll be feeling. If you don't like to rock, then you may want to skip this track. But check it out, Little Richard hasn't missed a beat in over 50 years of recording!

5-0 out of 5 stars What an Amazing Tribute to an Amazing Man
I saw the CMT Special on TV that was made when this album was being recorded and it was almost as good as the album. They interviewed the artists and Johnny & June Cash.Plus you see the artists sing their version of these songs live. Johnny Cash sure seemed to like them all.
