3-0 out of 5 stars Passable copies - little to impress overall in interpretations
The Eagles while they may have been country in origin were ultimately class purveyors of pop music that like Fleetwood Mac of the 1970s was an easy fit onto AM radio channels or programming. This CD in providing a number of country artistes (not all well known) the opportunity of doing covers of Eagles songs thus could have been an interesting "back to the roots" concept.
2-0 out of 5 stars The Trouble With Tributes
The trouble with all-star tribute albums to past superstar artists and bands is that oftentimes they are done purely for money, attention, and a sense that certain of those artists can one-up the artists being paid the "tribute" to; and often, the results don't come close to measuring up to the originals.Such, I'm afraid, is the case with the 1993 COMMON THREADS album, where Nashville artists give their props to that renegade bunch of desperados who occupied the Hotel California for most of the 1970s, the Eagles.
4-0 out of 5 stars Nearly Flawless Covers
I picked up "Common Thread:The Songs Of The Eagles" when it originally came out.Back then, I was a sucker for Nashville's commercial country engine and this album seemed to fit the bill.Laden with 90's Country stars, I figured this album would be great.Of course, back then I thought it was. However, my tastes have changed over the years and my love of commercial Nashville has turned into hatred.Posers like Mr. and Mrs. Faith Hill, Big and Rich, and Shania Twain have stolen the spotlight from real Country artists by cranking out easy-to-digest pop songs and passing them off as Country.Even with my transformation though, I've grown to love this particular album more over time.In fact, most of the artists on this project have either been drawn deeper into traditional Country or their careers have faded into dust.I guess Nashville got lucky on this album by picking artists that weren't molded for stardom but found it in their own right.

All that's right with modern country and all that's wrong withmodern country in one cellophane wrapper. You can't deny the currentroster of talented, enthusiastic, and charismatic performers. On theother hand, the omnipresent rock beats and slick production seem toindicate a lack of trust in the talent. As a result, artists with aless-polished approach--BR5-49, Patty Loveless, Lee Roy Parnell--standapart from the pack. Choosing material in modern Nashville is also acrapshoot, as evidenced by lines such as: "Going through the BigD, I don't mean Dallas / I can't believe what the judge had to tell us/ I got the jeep and she got the palace." Or "Joined a cult, joined the Klan, on the road with Pearl Jam / buried with the GratefulDead, came back as a Parrothead." Of course, this is a danceableRead more

Not having a background in Country music, I was looking for something that would sample recent trends in the genre for a party I was having. I must say the playlist is a lot of fun and many of the tracks are clever and witty, both musically and lyrically. We all had a good time.

I can't believe that none of these songs were ever on the radio. Now I am a young African-American woman, the first time I heard this cd I fell in love with country music. I would recommend anyone to buy this cd.

I used the Faith Hill song "Somewhere down the road" for my infant daughters funeral who was born stillborn. We love the whole CD.

5-0 out of 5 stars The songs are terrific
I had an opportunity to purchase this CD while on vacation in Nashville, and it's fabulous. I listen to it over and over and never tire of it. Since I didn't see the movie, I don't know how this collection stacks up to the original sound track, but it really doesn't matter -- I like pop/country and all the songs are great and well performed! ... great mix of odd-ball tunes; must-have for demento show fans; great music for people who enjoy music removed from the mainstream.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Twangy Review...
The CD is fabulous, but only if you like the type of music it has. It has some 'twangy' old country, and spoofs of a few "newer" country.A few songs are about beer, which is always good. If you appreciate the Dr. then you should appreciate this collection.

4-0 out of 5 stars Ooooooh...that's corny!
Dr. Demento has compiled a CD of funny country songs. Most of theses songs are very funny."I'm a Nut" is a hilarious song by a Roger Miller imitator."You Can't Roller Skate in a Buffalo Herd" is a hilarious song by the real Roger Miller."Achy Breaky Song" is about the song you love to hate."I'm My Own Grandpaw" is a country classic. The two Jerry Reed songs are great, and so are the two Ray Stevens songs.I also love the songs by Johnny Paycheck and "Little" Jimmy Dickens. The rest of the songs I didn't like as much, but they are still not bad. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars COULDN'T TAKE IT OUT OF THE PLAYER!
I grew up on country music. my family liked it but I didn't.I was just there as the songs played but they did not appeal to my heart. Now days I do appreciate them more than I would ever admit to my brothers. So I groaned when I heard the first song since I am not an active country music listener. I thought the second song was a dog too. Then the theme song to the old tv show came on and I liked that. The last two songs are what are so addictive. Randy Newman's original "Ride Gambler Ride" is superb and the classic gospel "Amazing Grace" is more than wonderful.I listened so much and played it for three weeks solid in my truck. There is not a bad song on the CD.This is a very slick presentation, a well thought out CD and a compendium of the Western spirit in the 19th century.

This is a wonderful collection/story that honors Patsy Cline. It is entertaining and the recordings are great! You will enjoy this CD tremendously, if you like Patsy Cline.

5-0 out of 5 stars Homage at its best!
I saw Mandy Barnett play Patsy at the Ryman in Nashville and was sure she was lipsyncing. I was truly blown away. She has Patsy down to a "T". Of course anyone who expects the real Patsy will be disappointed because this is just an excellent interpretation of the famous country star. I would recommend this for anyone who saw the play or intends to. It is a wonderful reminder of a real friendship between Loiuse (through her story telling) and one of country musics pioneers.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Country Album Compilation Available!
This was the first album to be released under "The Best of Austin City Limits" from their vast library of classic country music. It delivers the best country album compilation I've ever heard. With the likes of Mary Chapin Carpenter's "I Feel Lucky" (and you will if you own this great album) to Waylon Jennings "I've Always Been Crazy" and Tammy Wynette's "Stand By Your Man", all the great country music venues are explored here. From slow, tender love songs to foot-stompin' tunes, the minutes race by like an old iron horse headed west into the sunset as you listen to your favorite hits. It all ends too soon, but lively, with "Boogie Back to Texas" by Asleep At The Wheel. If you don't own this album, get it. Then do someone else a favor--share it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Compilation
From the familiar first words, "Its Austin City Limits" followed by the unmistakeable voice of Merle doing "Silver Wings", this CD captures what the show is all about.I listen to this CD at least once a week!Just buy it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Driving my life away
I thought the movie had good points (the action was dead on as to what can sometimes happen with trucks and cars in accidents) and bad (the theme not all drivers are bad).I'm a trucker and sometimes other drivers don't think before they do things or worse they figure that we have all those wheels so we have to have more brakes. not true. I liked the movie because it gave people a different perspective. The sound track has gotten me through many long miles and long hours. "Highway Junkie" being my favorite because as my trucking uncle and my dad say once the diesel gets in your blood you can't get it out.

4-0 out of 5 stars For those long hours on the road.....
It's ironic really that I hated the movie "Black Dog" but yet I LOVE the soundtrack. "Black Dog" is one of the coolest country soundtracks ever. There are a few love songs on the CD, but the lot consists mainly of trucker anthems, which coincides with the movie's theme. And with people like Lee Ann Womack ("A Man With 18 Wheels), Gary Allan ("Highway Junkie"), Randy Travis ("My Greatest Fear") and Patty Loveless ("On Down The Line") adding their talent, you know you're getting something worthy. 4-0 out of 5 stars A Focus On The Life Of A Truck Driver

Fine Rolling Stones tribute album. Various country bands play well known Stones songs. Most I like "Honky Tonk Women" by Travis Tritt, "Paint It Black" by Tracy Lawrence, "The Last Time" by The Tractors, "Jumpin' Jack Flash" by Rodney Crowell and "Brown Sugar" by Collin Raye.
4-0 out of 5 stars Fun and Forgettable
I love the Rolling Stones, and I have long been amused by their reverance for American country music.I'd like to have a CD of Stones tunes in which the country element shines through, such as "Virginia" and "Honky Tonk Women" and "Country Honk."

5-0 out of 5 stars Almost Perfect
Virtually all tribute albums featuring other artists recroding songs made famous by the recipient of the tribute contain at least one dud and a couple of near duds. That is not the case with Mama's Hungry Eyes, which is the reason I rank it as the greatest tribute album. In fact, a couple (used in the country colloquial to mean any number from 2 to 4) of the versions here I prefer over Merle's, and a couple more I rate as fully equal with Merle's.
5-0 out of 5 stars Loved It.
I would not consider myself an advit Country Music fan, although, I enjoy the music of Willie Nelson and some other traditional country singers. For me, I really enjoy the stories that they tell and the way their messages are so humble and heartfelt. A friend of mine gave me this tape to check out, and I could not stop listening to it. I was only familiar with Merle through his Pancho and Lefty song with Willie Nelson, but, after I heard this CD, I became an immediate fan. Even though the songs here are sung by other people, the lyrics and the stories are all Merle. I was touched by the "Farmers Daughter", "Silver Wings", and, of course, Willie Nelsons rendition of "The Day I Started Loving You Again". And I could not stop laughing when I heard, "The Night The Bottle Let Me Down". If you are a fan of good music, not just Country Music, but music period, this is definitely a CD you would want to add to your collection. It will be worth every penny you invest it in. Enjoy.

I am writing this review before I own this album--I heard it tonight for the first time, and the Doug Stone cut blew me away!Gone Out of My Mind brings to mind "He Stopped Loving Her Today" and a lot of othersad country songs I've heard over the years.Since I don't own the CDyet(I'm ordering it right now!!), I don't even know who wrote thissong--but anybody that's ever cried over a good Merle or George song canappreciate the emotions behind the lyrics of this song.I also loved TraceAdkins' version of "I Never Go Around Mirrors".This album isnot perfect, and it may have been conceived by a marketing major, but thethrust behind the music on this album is unchanged and unaltered from thedays when "country" music was actually different from all therest. As a lover of all music, especially a good sad song--I recommendthis album as a primer for young fans of "new" country.Theyhave already shown some taste, now we just have to urge them on in theright direction. Thanks for listening to me, and thanks in advance forlistening to really great music. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Will the circle be unbroken
This is a pretty good collection of country songs from the Columbia Records vaults, dating from the late 1960s to the 1980s.There are some great songs here, and there are some not-so-great songs here. That is to say, a few of them are not to my taste. But it is still a good representation of country music from the time period covered.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Must for Your Personal Jukebox
The final installment in this excellent series takes country music (on Columbia Records, at least) through the 60s, 70s and 80s and what a long, strange trip it's been.Label stalwart Johnny Cash kicks off the proceedings with "Daddy Sang Bass," one of his personal classics. But then, look: it's Bob Dylan, the Byrds and later, Poco -- rock and roll acts doing country! And what fine country it is; "Hickory Wind" is the absolute finest from the Byrds' Gram Parsons era and "Pickin' Up the Pieces" is a good early selection from Poco.Read more
