2-0 out of 5 stars Blueberry Fields Forever
This album features instrumental bluegrass versions of Beatles songs played by session musicians. It's not very interesting. It's competently played (more or less), but without any feeling.I don't anyone that this would appeal to.

5-0 out of 5 stars Some good old friends an some discoveries!
Essential 60's-early 70's country-rock collection. Before owning this, in my record collection there were Byrds, Gram Parsons, Flying Burrito Bros, International Submarine Band, and Gene Clark records (a man whose music, personally, I love as much as Gram Parsons'). But I suposse it's difficult to find/own/have heard before many of the gems contained in this CD. I have bought it recently, and in my first listenings I've been amazed by the Corvettes tune or the Praire League, and by the songs of some people who didn't made too much country rock stuff: John Philips and my beloved ones, The Loving Spoonful. And there are songs that I've compilled for me and my friends and relatives many, many times: Gene Clark's Why not your baby and Tried so hard (such a wonderful song which has been covered by the Fariport Convention, The Flying Burrito Bros, Yo la Tengo... a song I will never get tired of). Perhaps, the only thing I miss is some Buffallo Springfield-early Neil Young songs which I thing could have shared the spirit of the compilation. Anyway, I must say that (compiller and folk-rock-garage-pop erudite) Alec Palao has given us again a must for the 60's music aficionado. He sure had disscussed the tracks for hours with Sid Griffin, maybe one of the few other people who I would trust on doing this compilling work. ... Read more

Editorial Review

This tribute album doesn't go out of its way to cater to fans of Identikit late-'90s country stars; a surprisingly high percentage of these tracks succeed, thanks largely to an artist list that retains ties to Wynette's generation, whether musically or personally. Ex- husband George Jones writes a final chapter of his relationship with the star on a painfully dignified version of "Take Me to Your World" that ironically reverses the song's situation; here, it's the woman who's the barroom habitue, Jones the longsuffering spouse. Equally affecting is Rosanne Cash's "D-I-V-O-R-C-E," a typically wise-shaded performance. Less adventurous, but nearly as touching, is "'Til I Get It Right" by Trisha Yearwood. As is usual with such projects, though, the bad stuff is really bad--not least Elton John's schlocky reworking of "Stand By Your Man," which seems to miss the joke in a way that Lyle Lovett's 1989 recording didn't. 3-0 out of 5 stars SOME GOOD COVERS, SOME NOT.....
Let's begin with Track #1:
4-0 out of 5 stars A fine tribute that could have been better
This tribute album is dominated by country ladies who owe a debt of gratitude to Tammy for helping to open the doors of country music to female singers. There are some other singers here too, but their contribution is variable. The standout track is Brian Wilson (of the Beach boys) joining Tammy for a duet version of In my room, a Beach boys classic - it was the last recording Tammy ever made. George Jones does a great version of Take me to your world, but sings it as I'll take you to my world. Given his past drinking habits, this is intriguing. I love Elton John's music, but Stand by your man really doesn't suit him. Both David Allan Coe and Lyle Lovett have covered this song superbly, so it can be done well by a man. Melissa Etheridge's version of Apartment number nine is also weak. Kate McGarrigle joins Emmylou and Linda for a fine version of Golden ring.5-0 out of 5 stars LA Times Reviewer Made An Oversight Here
If only the LA Times reviewer had actually "reviewed" this CD, he/she would have noted that ALL of the participants in this project were personal friends of Wynette. This was the first release by Evelyn Shriver as President of Asylum (a "first lady" in that field) and the "Star Power" that the LA Times was looking for completely missed the point of truthfully and sincerely "remembering" an artist.Get it, LA??? "Tammy Wynette...Remembered."Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Smokey Mountain Hymns, Vol 3
This CD is a tremendous addition to Volumns 1 and 2. The musical arrangements of familiar songs is wonderful. The sounds of the handmade instruments are truly pleasing to the ear. This CD would be highly recommended as soothing, relaxing background music as well as good ol' foot stomping music. The fact that the entire album is instrumental is a definite plus. I highly recommend the purchase if this album. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Just what I was looking for!
I enjoy listening to the music of the Dave Matthews Band in any form. The melodies are just as beautiful done this way.The perfect accompaniment for your Dave Matthews collection.

3-0 out of 5 stars Worth a listen
I have a very big fan of DMB, I've seen them 11 times and I have total appreciation for their music. This CD only brings up another notch. It is a great CD, but I listened to it once and haven't picked it up since. For a hardcore DMB fan, it's a must have.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very cool for a DMB fan, yet lacking juice
If you are a Dave Matthews Band fan, this CD is really cool. This definitely isn't the right CD for a first time listener, but I know for me as a fan it really helped me to appreciate the original recordings more. The musicianship on this CD is definitely top notch. They manage to play through all the songs without the need of drums for extra background! My ownly complaint, besides length, is the lack of dynamics. As a musician and lover of music I know and can appreciate the importance of crescendos and decrescendos, and that's one reason I love DMB so much. They do a superb job of building and winding down throughout the song which adds a lot to the energy. This Breathe CD, on the other hand, is very musical and creative and together yet it seems to lack that original DMB juice. It is a pretty cool CD that's worth the 15 bucks, but don't expect it to be as great as Dave. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Set Of Western Swing
"Stompin' Singers & Western Swingers" takes up where Proper's last Western Swing set, "Doughboys, Playboys and Cowboys", left off.
4-0 out of 5 stars Uneven but worth the price for one GREAT song
Not what I expected. I was hoping for lots of Western swing here but many of these songs do not qualify for that category - there is no way that some of these songs could be considered Western swing. Lots of filler. But then you come upon Wade Ray's "It's all your fault!" What a find! This is one GREAT song. Sheer perfection: great lyrics, great music, a perfect vocal, wonderful guitar and fiddle. I uploaded that one in my ipod and have been listening to it ever since. If my ipod was a jukebox, I would have spent the equivalent of this set's price in quarters for all the times I have played that song. If you love Western swing, get the Bob Wills box set. He was the king of Western swing and his band was red hot.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Deal in Town
Over 100 western swing masterpieces, most not available elsewhere, are here for your dancing and listening enjoyment! Most of them are up-tempo and have jazzy and jivey themes with hot solos and impassioned vocals - nothing called "country" music today compares to this. If you have the previous set in the series (Cowboys, Doughboys and Playboys), you'll know how good the Proper label sets are, and this one is at least as good. There's also an informative booklet included, with pictures, which will teach you all you need to know about the music and the artists. If you have ever heard of Cab Calloway, Fats Waller, Buck Owens or Asleep at the Wheel and appreciate this kind of music you simply can't go wrong here. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Country before It Veered into Late-Seventies Pop
This Time-Life collection of four CDs (sixty songs) offers a solid representation of how country music adapted during the turbulent '60s and early '70s. While some performers (Barbara Fairchild, Donna Fargo, the Statler Brothers) relied on novelty to preserve their careers, others began to see how addressing controversial issues, offering more direct questions about romantic relationships, and expressing the dignity of country roots could offer induring messages. This set offers pioneering women singer/songwriters like Loretta Lynn and Dolly Parton. You'll find three Kris Kristofferson songs ("Why Me," Sammi Smith's "Help Me Make It through the Night," and Johnny Cash's "Sunday Morning Comin' Down"). You'll find George Jones and Merle Haggard, too. While, as one reviewer on this site notes, the set contains no bluegrass (bluegrass didn't enjoy much radio airplay during this period of country programming), it does demonstrate what the country traditionalists were doing before URBAN COWBOY contaminated country radio with a pop sensibility that still infects it. Excellent song selection and ear-flattering remastering of the original material earn this set a solid five stars.

4-0 out of 5 stars Will the circle be unbroken
This is a pretty good collection of country songs from the Columbia Records vaults, dating from the late 1960s to the 1980s.There are some great songs here, and there are some not-so-great songs here. That is to say, a few of them are not to my taste. But it is still a good representation of country music from the time period covered.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Must for Your Personal Jukebox
The final installment in this excellent series takes country music (on Columbia Records, at least) through the 60s, 70s and 80s and what a long, strange trip it's been.Label stalwart Johnny Cash kicks off the proceedings with "Daddy Sang Bass," one of his personal classics. But then, look: it's Bob Dylan, the Byrds and later, Poco -- rock and roll acts doing country! And what fine country it is; "Hickory Wind" is the absolute finest from the Byrds' Gram Parsons era and "Pickin' Up the Pieces" is a good early selection from Poco.Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars YAWN. This is a sleeper.
WOW!I was really excited when I heard this record was out!I'm a huge Lynyrd Skynyrd fan, and also a fan of bluegrass music....I figured this would be a PERFECT combination, so I bought it ASAP.And really, it's not horrible, it's just dull. This sounds like a bunch of session musicians playing for scale, no heart, no passion.Nothing interesting or unique about the arrangements. To borrow from Skynyrd's album title, this is Nothin' Fancy. It makes ok background music, plesant enough to play in our retail store....THAT's disappointing in itself.

4-0 out of 5 stars Dobro Heaven
Very good from start to finish... and WOW... what a finish! An epic 9-minute banjo-driven version of "Freebird" with the melody hammered home by a wailing fiddle and a honking harmonica. The pickers on this CD sound like they're real Skynyrd fans, not just guys out to make a profit off of somebody else's music. They don't just cover the songs, they respectfully pay homage to them. I listened to this one once or twice and then stopped playing it5-0 out of 5 stars Its about time!!
I've been waiting years on an Emmylou collection to include the song "Only the Heart May Know" with Dan Fogelberg. It was missing from her duet album a few years ago and this collection finally includes it. There are many songs making this a memorable compilation since Emmylou leaves her mark on every song she collaborates on, even for background vocals only. Since it would be tough to buy all the individual cd's everything is on, this is a find to someone who loves her work.
