5-0 out of 5 stars This is one of my 'desert island' discs
I'm a huge Willie Nelson fan and I love all sorts of music so this was a real treat.I bought it when it came out about a thousand years ago and it was money well spent. When I pull it out of the case, and listen to it, it never disapoints. If you get a chance to pick it up for $5 do it.You won't regret it.
4-0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable
I am a huge Willie Nelson fan so I bought this cd not knowing what to expect; alternative artists doing Willie Nelson songs, i thought to myself, "What do these artist really know about Willie Nelson besides that fact that everyone has heard on the road again?" Well even if they dont know much about him, they do a good job covering his songs. The cd starts out with this powerful electric guitar riff breaking into a great rendition of Time of the preacher; Johnny Cash on vocals does the song lots of justice. L7 does a good job making Three Days pretty heavy. The rockabilly version of Shotgun Willie is one of the jewels of this disk and Tenderloin does a remarkable job. When Jerry Cantrell preforms I've seen all the world I care to See, you can hear a sencerity in his voice that put you in a mood that Willie must have been in when he wrote the lyrics. One of the original outlaws Waylon Jennings almost makes I never cared for You, his own with his unmistakable voice. Angel flying too close to the Ground is very bizarre and as much as i like Kris Kristofferson, i have never listened to it all the way thru. The worst song, which happens to be a great song by Willie, is Still is still moving to me by Jello Biafra. Just like everything that involves Jello, the band is good, but he has such a horrible voice it makes it unlistenable as his voice sounds like Katherine Hepburns'. All in all this is a good cd and i would recommend giving it a listen.

5-0 out of 5 stars So Great I bought it twice!
I had this CD when it first came out years ago, and then lost it. I looked everywhere...even online file sharing, and could not find it anywhere. Enter Amazon.com! This is one of the best CD's ever!!! Everyone recognizes Willie's vocal style, but with this album, you really get a feel for his writing style too. This album is out of print and will be very collectable...so buy it while you can! My fav songs: L7, Presidents of the USA, and Jesse Dayton. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Just Like the Cover
You can tell what you're gonna get from the cover art on the CD.This is without a doubt hell-bent-insurgent country.I hadn't heard of most of the groups on the CD, and I'm glad I got this chance to explore some new bands from the goodole midwest. If you haven't heard of these bands, don't worry about it, Bloodshot Records will hook you up with some rockin country twang.

5-0 out of 5 stars scrappy, packed with toe-tappin' tunes
This 1995 compilation was an early sign of the greatness of the Bloodshot Militant Honky-Tonk Faction of alt.country.If you liked the 5-year anniversary comp, DOWN TO THE PROMISED LAND, then you're bound to like this one just as much. There are 17 cuts, by the Waco Brothers, Robbie Fulks, Richard Buckner, the Bottle Rockets, and the Old 97's, to mention some of the better known artists. The following songs are all absolutely brilliant, and deserved to be blasting out of radios everywhere back in '95:

4-0 out of 5 stars All American Special for country fans
This cd is pretty good although it will be really good if you like all kinds of artists whats good about it is not the same artist song after song. You have many great acts like Terri Clark, George Strait and Leann Womack and many more. Personally though the songs that they picked for the various artists are not there best they have sung better than that and the cd ends with Americas tribute with God Bless the U.S.A from Lee Greenwood. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Very best 'couple of cds' country collection on the planet
I have all the time life country as well as some more, around 900 old country classic songs. Most of them that I did not have before are issued on these series 1-4. I would buy it, even if it costs a lot now. Great old style country, from good vocal classics to fantastic banjo solo's!
4-0 out of 5 stars Traditional Music
Hey, this music sucks. But then did you expect polish from the Skillet Lickers and the Fruit Jar Drinkers? This is the real McCoy for traditional hillbilly music, straight from the billy's mouth.Folk music performed by the folks, from a time when nobody was embarrassed to sing, before country music became "pop rock" and sterile. It aint gonna hit top 40 today - and that is a compliment.

4-0 out of 5 stars Something for Texas to brag about
Even though this is an anthology album containing selections from other CDs made by Texas artists, all this music was new to me.I don't think it's as good as the Tex-Mex edition of this series, which offers a greater variety of styles.(This one has too many traditional blues style cuts and Grade-B vocals that on a few occasions give it a generic sound). However, there are some cuts on this CD that I think make it essential listening.I flipped over Delbert McClinton's "Same Kind of Crazy."I love its sentiment and its exuberance. It really expresses the joy of a particular kind of infatuation.I could listen to this one over and over again.I was similarly impressed with Slaid Cleaves' lyrically very sophisticated "Broke Down."Cleaves' sensitive yet manly performance is also appealing. It took me a couple of listenings to appreciate Marcia Ball's "She's So Innocent," but it has become one of my favorite cuts.At first it sounded like a bad lounge act, but when I listened more closely, I found the wistful lyrics really interesting, and Ms. Ball's jazzy arrangement and performance give the whole CD sophistication it might not have had otherwise.Ditto for Asleep at the Wheel's "Choo Choo Ch' Boogie."There are also cuts from such internationally famous Texas performers as Willie Nelson, Boz Scaggs and The Dixie Chicks. (Where's Lyle Lovett?)It's all quite entertaining. This CD and the Tex-Mex edition ("Don't Mess With La Musica de Texas") of this series are must-haves for anyone who is even mildly curious about contemporary Texas music. The "Don't Mess With Texas Music" series is very impressive.Texas rightly has something to brag about here.

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't Miss 'Don't Mess With Texas' music

1-0 out of 5 stars Buffet skims another pond
Buffett has for years figured ways to make inane phrases into buzz words and cheap hooks. Simple minded poetry thrown together with inferior musical ablility has for thirty years allowed this guy to be the McDonald's fast music appeal to the middle class without taste or brains. It's a real shame that he gets royalties from the sale of yet another insipid waste.
5-0 out of 5 stars Parrot heads will love this
I am a Jimmy Buffett fan and not a bluegrass expert by any means. I can't comment as to how authentic this is as bluegrass music but I love this CD! It is great to listen to as background music. That this is Buffett music is very obvious but it is refreshing to hear these different instruments playing it. Calming and relaxing to listen to. If you are worried about how this sounds I suggest listening to the free music clips here on Amazon first. I am sure the Parrot heads will love this CD!

4-0 out of 5 stars A Parrot Heads delight
I do enjoy this cd. Even though it isn't blue grass it has a tint of it in the music. I think the only reason why it even mentions blue grass is because thats what "pickin' on" is associated with. On the back it states "down-home flavor to tropical folk-rock" which is exactly what this is. If you are looking for nice background drinking music I suggest you purchase this. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars WOW!
As someone who grew up in the 70's and 80's, I was turned off country by the Conway Twitty/Ronnie Milsap style cheese that dominated country radio.Unfortunately, country radio has not improved at all since then.Today, all that seems to distinguish "country" from the prepackaged music played by pop and rock stations is a little twangy Southern flavoring (as opposed to the hip-hop flavoring that makes today's pop-rock "edgy"), as well as artists for whom cowboy hats are apparently a part of their anatomy.5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant alt.country musical essay
After nine years of writing about music, the editors of "No Depression" have cut out the wordy indirections with this thirteen track essay on alternative country music. No doubt they've been pieced together compilations like this for friends, but now those outside the immediate circle now get to share in their obsession. This thirteen track collection has the breadth needed to stake out a genre as hazy as "No Depression." There are founders (The Carter Family) and legends (Johnny Cash, Doug Sahm, Emmylou Harris), alt.country darlings (Whiskeytown, Robbie Fulks, Alejandro Escovedo, Lucinda Williams) and artists from the various spokes of the alt.country umbrella. And as if that weren't enough, there are frictional sparks thrown off by several surprising collaborations.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Christmas novelty, strictly for fun
If you enjoy the sound of good ol' country pickin', you'll love this. Now you might not be used to the sort of treatment "Oh Come All Ye Faithful" gets, but it's all good clean fun.The tempo does slow down some for "Silver Bells" (which features some great steel guitar), and the "White Christmas" rendition is surprisingly slow and soulful.Basically though, these are great bluegrass & country stylings of Christmas favorites, and I recommend the CD quite highly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
I purchased this cassette from the weather channel when they offered their holiday music for sale a couple of years ago, I received this cassette along with the one being offered. It gets more mileage every Christmas than any of my other Christmas music. It has a very upbeat tune. It is very relaxing and enjoyable to listen to in the car after a long day at work. I came across the CD last year and I had to purchase it, in the event my cassette tape breaks, I have a backup. I may have to buy another CD to backup my backup.I would definitely recommend this CD and I was never a bluegrass fan.Very, very well performed. The musicians are outstanding.

5-0 out of 5 stars CD is perfect Complement for DVD...
I read the review warning to not buy the CD and skip straight to the DVD.Fortunately, the DVD/CD set was already bought for me as a birthday gift before I could act on the review and bypass the CD.Simply put, the CD has some great songs by some incredible artists. The sound quality and performances are excellent. If you attended the 2003 TBF and had to pick 13 tracks I'm sure most of us would come up with a different mix of songs than the next guy but these tracks do well in capturing my experience.Plus... this CD is listener friendly (which I appreciate)and if you play it in fornt of people who aren't into bluegrass they may begin to understand why you are.(DVD is excellent too)
2-0 out of 5 stars Buy the DVD instead!!
I think that the choice of music on this CD is poor in comparison with what they had to choose from at the festival. The selections on the CD are few in number and shallow in depth. One would have thought that with four very long days of music to choose from, they could have come up with more tracks and better choices. The DVD has better music and as a bonus you get to sit right in front of these great musicians as they play and get a real feel for the wonderful personalities behind the music.Better yet....make the pilgrimage to Telluride and endure the hail and rain and brutal sun. It's worth it every year!

4-0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable
I liked this album myself. My favorite tracks being Gillian Welch's In Tall Buildings and Tim O'Brien;s More Love. This really isn't a John Hartford album, but rather a tribute to himThere are a few great numbers by him however that are wonderful and amusing in a dark humor sort of way.

2-0 out of 5 stars A heartfelt tribute...............but a mediocre album
I've loved John Hartford's music for years, and was very happy that a tribute had taken place and was preserved for posterity. But I found the disc that resulted disappointing. The breadth and depth of Hartford's music calls for a towering tribute.Unfortunately, this isn't it.3-0 out of 5 stars Goodbye John....
I'm a huge fan of John Hartford's and have been since I saw him live in Austin many, many years ago. Those who gathered together to play John's music were better musicians than I, but not necessarily bigger fans! In any event, this is not the album to get as an introduction to John -- Aereo-Plain, Live on Mountain Stage or Good Old Boys are far better for that.Read more
