5-0 out of 5 stars wonderful and engaging
A collection of music in the vein of the "O Brother" and "Down From The Mountain" albums - but these are original artists or vintage recordings. Includes two very different versions each of "O Death" and "I'm A Man Of Constant Sorrow."

5-0 out of 5 stars original/vintage versions of songs from the soundtrack
Here are many of the songs from the "O Brother Where Art Thou" and "Down from the Mountain" CDs, performed either by the original artists or in vintage renditions, as well as other great songs in the "roots and blues" vein.An interesting and enjoyable comparison/companion to the soundtrack albums. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Definitely worth buying
Some music just isn't well translated into bluegrass.Luckily, the Allman Brothers music is and the various bluegrass musicians on this cd do a great job.You can tell they are themselves fans of the music and capture the bluesy power behind the Allmans.Get it. The only reason I don't give it five stars is that I reserve that for the very best cds--but this is very good.

4-0 out of 5 stars For special tastes, this is a great CD
These are very well done bluegrass arrangments of ABB classics. They lack the gritty edge of the originals, but offer a softer, more melodic take on the songs. Not MUZAK, just a bluegrass-sweetness.The musicianship is superb. But, it's not intended to be the same type of hard-edged, modal jammin' that the Brothers are famous for. There are no vocals. Rather, the vocal melody is typically carried my mandolin or dobro - which adds a real tastiness to the arrangements.I know folks that wouldn't enjoy Fillmore East or Eat A Peach, but will probably find this a pleasant intro to the ABB classics covered by this CD.

5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely Well Done
The music of the Allman Brothers was could not fit better with the bluegrass style. Every song sounds as though is was written to accommodate bluegrass instrumentation. Anyone who likes to play along on acoustic guitar and likes the Allmans will love this album. Not a bad price either. Pick it up, you won't be disappointed. ... Read more

I purchased two of the Patsy Cline CDs as family gifts. They were a big hit to the over 50 crowd. Patsy is a favorite.

This is a wonderful collection/story that honors Patsy Cline. It is entertaining and the recordings are great! You will enjoy this CD tremendously, if you like Patsy Cline.

5-0 out of 5 stars Homage at its best!
I saw Mandy Barnett play Patsy at the Ryman in Nashville and was sure she was lipsyncing. I was truly blown away. She has Patsy down to a "T". Of course anyone who expects the real Patsy will be disappointed because this is just an excellent interpretation of the famous country star. I would recommend this for anyone who saw the play or intends to. It is a wonderful reminder of a real friendship between Loiuse (through her story telling) and one of country musics pioneers.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Its good
There are 2 standout songs that are up-tempo enough for the Blue Grass to really shine "Time" and "Run Like Hell" the rest are solid interpitations of the originals good and in some cases damn good but the harmonic transitions and the banjo work in Time left me flored when i first heard them and i still enjoy listining to it after a year and a half of owning the album. And im a hard rocker

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!

Speaking as a displaced Texan living abroad in the UK, I loved this CD. It made my heart do flip-flops just thinking about my beautiful homeland. This compalation is one all Texans should have in their collection. If nothing else for Moe Bandys Deep in The Heart of Texas and two great songs by the Vaughn brothers. 5-0 out of 5 stars COULDN'T TAKE IT OUT OF THE PLAYER!
I grew up on country music. my family liked it but I didn't.I was just there as the songs played but they did not appeal to my heart. Now days I do appreciate them more than I would ever admit to my brothers. So I groaned when I heard the first song since I am not an active country music listener. I thought the second song was a dog too. Then the theme song to the old tv show came on and I liked that. The last two songs are what are so addictive. Randy Newman's original "Ride Gambler Ride" is superb and the classic gospel "Amazing Grace" is more than wonderful.I listened so much and played it for three weeks solid in my truck. There is not a bad song on the CD.This is a very slick presentation, a well thought out CD and a compendium of the Western spirit in the 19th century.

4-0 out of 5 stars There's Always Another Way To Do Things. . .Your Way.
Waylon Jennings was an influential American country singer and guitarist, born in Littlefield, Texas. He taught himself to play guitar as a young child, and formed his first band two years later. He worked as a DJ throughout his high school years, dropping out of high school to look for a career in music. During his time working as a DJ, he met and befriended Buddy Holly.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Fitting Tribute
This tribute album is filled with beautiful renditions of Waylon Jennings' songs.Dave Alvin's "Amanda", Nanci Griffith's "You Asked Me To", and Allison Moorer's "Storms Never Last" are exceptionally good.Junior Brown's worn, tattered vocals in "Nashville Rebel" sound remarkably like Waylon Jenning himself. The tribute to Jennings' life and music contained in the liner notes is moving; each of the performers briefly comments upon Jennings and his influence. However, as a tribute to Jennings, Kris Kristofferson's rendition of "I Do Believe" is worth the price of the album in and of itself.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fine Set
This tribute to Waylon is a fine set.The musicians all seem to have an affinity for Jennings' music, even some of the less obvious choices.Guy Clark is one of the country outlaws; and "Good Hearted Woman" is given an affectionate dusting.Nancy Griffith's "You Asked Me To" highlights the Jennings/Shaver lovely melody, without grandstanding.Norah Jones' reading of "Wurlitzer Prize (I Don't Want to Get Over You)" is a real high point on this excellent set with her bluesy piano giving the track a new sound.Joe Doe relates to the punk side of Waylon's persona and smokes sassily through "Only Daddy That'll Walk the Line.""Nashville Rebel" has a great trad country feel with Junior Brown's deep bass voice and Lloyd Green's steel guitar diving deep into country.Radney Foster with Roger Credager does a nice job on the catchy "Luckenbach, Texas (Back to the Basics of Love)".Allison Moorer does a dynamite job with Jessi Colter's gorgeous tune "Storms Never Last," highlighting the rare softer side Waylon showed.Kris Kristofferson sang "I Do Believe" at Waylon's funeral; his version here is heartfelt with a great slow build."Lock, Stock & Teardrops" by Alejandro Escovedo works extremely well. The liner notes give great information on Waylon.I forgot he was part of Buddy Holly's band; so the Cricket's version of "Waymore's Blues" fits well.Although it might seem unusual, I really like Henry Rollins' rocking version of the title tune. This is a nice set that Dualtone has put together, a tribute to one of our country greats.Enjoy! ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Some Fun Pickin'
While niether David Grisman nor Old & In The Way, this CD should delight those who appreciate Dead tunes presented in less than familiar ways.Truckin' can't be remastered in a quasi-bluegrass steel pedal version to the satisfaction of any true deadhead, yet this version reminds us that their music is timeless and transcends definition. The little blast of "I Know You Rider", among many others during Bird Song reminisceses of the anticipation at a show, wondering where it was leading.Dark Star done in this particular environment begs the intensity, yet conveys a similar sense of wonder.Overall, the mandolin soloing in this compilation is very interesting and will motivate those basement pickers to relisten to the original show tapes to find their place in an historic place in the evolution of roots americana.

2-0 out of 5 stars A Shame
As both a GD fan and a blue grass one, I was expecting so much more from this CD. It really should have been a no-brainer: take some of the more folkish GD songs (God knows there are plenty), get some top blue grass performers and let them have fun with them. Instead, what you get is a series of songs delivered in a sterile, flat, overly scripted manner with no spontaneity and no improvisation.3-0 out of 5 stars Next time hire a vocalist!
I tend to agree with the one star review below, but not to that extreme.Much of the Dead canon would make fantastic bluegrass music, and it's great that someone is trying. These renditions are clean, crisp cuts of tight bluegrass that don't quite achieve the bounce and spontanaiety of the originals. That's understandable...bluegrass tends to be very tight, rehearsed, and laid out ahead of time.Everyone takes a little lead, and the song's over. But the big drawback is the lack of vocals.Much of what is irreplaceable and addictive about the Dead's music is the lyrics, not just the melody.Friend of the Devil is a great tune, as is Scarlet Begonias, but how much flatter and less interesting they are without the wonderful words behind them!I haven't gotten vol. 2 yet, but I sure hope they have a singer this time.Reccomended, with this caveat in mind. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Pop/Country Music for Your Wedding
Make no mistake; if you're looking for country or pop music for your wedding and you're playing the CD, this is pretty good, although it would have been nice if they had included a few more selections. However, if you're using live musicians, and hopefully if you can afford it you are, the band will sound very similar, but not the same. I am a freelance classical violinist, so maybe I am a little biased, but overall, I still think this is an OK CD for what it is-pop country music.

This is a great cd. Bluegrass music does have a bit of an irish background. So it makes perfect sense. Some of the songs seem to have a bit of a celtic sound which is really pretty. This comes highly recommended.

4-0 out of 5 stars Hard to decide between 4 and 5 stars...

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Foster music
This CD brings back all the childhood memories that Foster's music invokes. It made me want to get up and dance when I listened to "Oh, Susanna" and "Camptown Races" and I felt the need to sing along with "Old Folks at Home." The artistry is as superb as we have come to expect from Joe Weed.I love this CD and enjoyed the historical information that is included.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Measure of a Songwriter...
...is how well his songs outlast their original era and context. That Stephen Foster was probably America's first important songwriter is inarguable.Yet it would be a mistake to _leave_ his songs there. This CD, to my mind, proves that his compositions have staying power.Bluegrass/folk treatments are a natural medium for Foster's songs, and the performances here are assured and approachable.Forget about "anachronism" as another reviewer put it.It would do Stephen Foster even more injustice to abandon his songs to the style of light opera or "parlor" music. They're better than that, and this disc proves it. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Keith's memory
Keith Whitley died in 1989 and my friends sing the soundtrack like "Hard Livin' Style" in 1994. That's not his song on his tribute album. Daron Norwood told Liane Dennis to give up when she sing the harmony of Ten Feet Away with Diamond Rio. Norwood sing "Little Boy Lost" when Keith's son, Jesse did not died when they say Daron told Liane to sing a love song for him.5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended
There's not a bad song on this album. Every song is a pure country gem. And with 4 previously unreleased songs sung by Keith Whitley, make this a must for any true fan. It's one of my few albums where I cannot honestly pick a couple of favourites. They are all so good. Highly recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars As Good As Bluegrass Gets
When the "O Brother" phenomenon struck, I had already been a fan of bluegrass music since the late Sixties.I bought vinyl copies of albums by Bill Monore, Flatt & Scruggs and, of course, The Stanley Brothers. However, it hasn't been until the last couple years that I sought out Ralph Stanley's post-seventies work. And with his inclusion on the "O Brother" soundtrack, there are many titles to choose from. This two-disc set is a no-brainer.It contains 36 tracks and nearly two hours of solid singing and picking.5-0 out of 5 stars Buy It NOW!
36 of the finest tunes, pickin', harmonies & feelings you'll ever listen to... and you will listen...over, and over and over!

5-0 out of 5 stars Mountain music for everybody to enjoy
Ralph's career spans over half a century, yet this album and it's sequel (Clinch mountain sweethearts, which I've also reviewed) may prove to be his most important legacy.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Recommendable
Fine Rolling Stones tribute album. Well known Stones songs recorded instrumental (no vocals) in bluegrass style by excellent musicians. Most I like "Honky Tonk Women", "Paint It Black", "Jumpin' Jack Flash", "Start Me Up" and "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction".
4-0 out of 5 stars Pickin' On The Rolling Stones: A Tribute
Try to visualize Keith Richards wearing a straw hat, sitting on the backof a tractor, banjo in hand and under the influence of speed.Thiscombination will give you a clear picture as to what you can expect fromthis record.Your toes will be tapping involuntarilyto the smooth andmelodic rhythm of the band. You will definitely get satisfaction fromPickin' On The Rolling Stones. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars A few gems in a well-intentioned mess
It seems crazy to even attempt to cover the songs of Patsy Cline and yet if I were a singer I think I'd want to try as well. The trouble is, not many singers can really pull this catalog off as this collection bears out. Only two tracks are outstanding, some are ok, some are depressing for all the wrong reasons.
3-0 out of 5 stars Patsy was one of a kind ...
... and that's why, with a couple of exceptions, I think this CD works. No one else could bring Patsy Cline's combination of soulful emotion and richly textured vocal quality to these songs, so why try? A case in point: Jessi Alexander's rendition of "So Wrong," wherein she tries mightily to imitate Patsy phrase for phrase - and fails.
5-0 out of 5 stars "Sweet Dreams" Are Made Of This
I love Patsy Cline's music as much as I love her voice. She was an artist who took a song and made it her own. I never thought I could appreciate a Cline song by another artist, that is until now. From Natalie Cole's interpretation of "I Fall To Pieces," Norah Jones' gorgeous vocals on "Why Can't He Be You," to Diana Krall's brilliant take on "Crazy" and the finale of all finales, an acapella rendition of "Sweet Dreams (Of You)" recorded impeccably by Martina McBride with Take 6. This CD has something for every Cline fan and anyone a fan of beautiful songs that are brilliantly recorded and arranged. Other artists include, Michelle Branch, Amy Grant, Lee Ann Womack, and the incomparable k.d. lang singing her idols praises on "Leavin' On Your Mind." If you're in the mood for love, or memories of love, this one's for you. What a remarkable tribute to a remarkable artist. Sweet Dreams indeed!
