I was extremily plesased with this CD. Every song on there was a top hit. Vintage C&W of the late 50's and early 60's.

5-0 out of 5 stars Golden Greats
This CD is one of the best collections of true classic country music I've ever found.Full-length songs by the original artists and a terrific selection, too.You can't ask for anything more.It would have been worth the price for me just to get to hear Carl Butler sing "Don't Let Me Cross Over" one more time, but add Wanda Jackson singing "Right Or Wrong", Dave Dudley's "Six Days On The Road" and all the other wonderful old songs and you have a winning CD that will keep you listening to it over and over again for hours. If you buy only one classic country CD this year, make it this one.It is well worth the money and will give you great country music from a time when it really was country music. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Worn Thin
If it's possible to wear out a CD as we used to with vinyl, then I have already taken several layers off this one.I never tire of the varieties of dobro playing on this one.It was my daily companion for a 2 hour commute for 4 years! It will open your interests to many of the great players of this under-appreciated instrument.

5-0 out of 5 stars Music at its best!
Great instrumental project! Most of the Dobro "Celebrities" are on this album, the great old players like Josh Graves and Mike Auldridge as well as the young players like Gene Wooten and Sally Van Meter. They all have one thing in common - extraordinary musicianship. The danger with instrumenta projects featuring the same instrument is always that it gets boring after awhile, but not here. There are so many different ways to play, also the song selection, from traditional fast-paced bluegrass to modern sounds, everything is here and the Dobro really fits for the complete musical spectrum. I really enjoyed this album!

5-0 out of 5 stars It opened my eyes to a whole new way to play guitar
This CD is a must for country or bluegrass music fans.It features 21 tracks of great dobro guitar accompanied by fiddle, banjo and sometimes mandolin. If you are like me and have never really gave dobro music a whole lot of thought, you will be pleasantly surprised. I think I could become hooked. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely essential
This is a marvelous collection. Along with "High Atmosphere", I consider it essential to orient you to the way the music really sounded. Most people come to Old Time music from some place else...bluegrass, country, or one of the great modern oddities like Old Crow Medicine Show or The Bad Livers.Perhaps you got the bug from "Oh Brother Where Art Thou".Well, you're on the right path with this very big 2 CD collection that not only has achingly beautiful a'capella balads, red hot fiddling, and some really phenomenal banjo work, but also haunting church shape note singing.Get "High Atmosphere" as well, and once you've absorbed them, branch out from there.

GREAT CD. THE CD CASE IS KIND OF DUMB, BECAUSE IT LIST THE ARTISTS AND TRACK NO. ON WHICH THEY PERFORM, INSTEAD OF THE ARTIST AND THEN THE SONG. THE SONGS ARE WRITTEN ON THE CD LABEL THOUGH. STILL A GREAT CD. VINTAGE SONGS, VINTAGE STYLE

Editorial Review

As befits a release on a fledgling indie label, Dualtone's tribute to Johnny Cash celebrates the feistier fringes of the Man in Black's catalog, adding a few mainstream milestones. In what is plainly a labor of love for all concerned, highlights extend from the pop innocence of "Ballad of a Teenage Queen" by Rodney Crowell (formerly married to Johnny's daughter Rosanne) to the folkier strains and husband-and-wife harmonies of "Pack Up Your Sorrows" by Bruce Robison and Kelly Willis to thehonky-tonk majesty of "I Still Miss Someone" by pianist Earl Poole Ball. Some of the more familiar touchstones don't fare quite as well, with Billy Burnette turning in a tepid "Ring of Fire" and Dale Watson singing in a lower than comfortable register on "I Walk the Line," though James Intveld rises to the challenge of "Folsom Prison Blues." The house band and the largely acoustic arrangements give the 18-cut album more unity than many such projects, as the collection shows why one of the most influential and commercially successful artists in country's history remains an icon of alt-country as well. 5-0 out of 5 stars The best tribute (so far)
The whole spirit of this CD takes me back to my teenage years in the late '50s, when we listened to Johnny Cash's Sun singles (along with Jerry Lee Lewis and Bill Haley) on the juke box. In addition to the excellent renditions of Cash's music, this collection introduced me to a few excellent singers who had somehow managed to slip by under my radar. In particular, I love Robbie Fulks' version of "Cry, Cry, Cry"--what a fantastic singer/songwriter! Surprisingly, the singer who sounds most like a young Cash (without seeming to imitate him) is the very Reverend Horton Heat on "Get Rhythm." Another is Chuck Mead's "There You Go." Hank III gives his own unique take on "Wreck of the Old '97." Sounding more like his own grandfather, it's certainly not the way Johnny Cash did it, but he nevertheless captures the bare tragedy and heroic spirit of the song. "Pack up Your Sorrows" was a favorite during the '60s, but I barely remember Johnny Cash singing it. The most familiar version was by Richard & Mimi Farina, and Kelly Willis and Bruce Robinson faithfully capture the spirit of their version. The other song that stands out is "Straigh A's in Love" by Eddie Angel. It's often forgotten that Johnny Cash was not primarily a country singer. Beginning with his classic work at Sun Studio, he pretty much invented the rockabilly sound, and it is this spirit that is well represented here. Get this CD and keep it in your car to brighten up those pesky commutes.

4-0 out of 5 stars Straight A's 4 This Tribute Disc!
There is some excellent music on "Dressed In Black: A Tribute to Johnny Cash."Chris Knight is one of those musicians that always sparks my interest; his version of "Flesh & Blood" is such a plaintive laid back reading of this song that it gives an emotional mix of loneliness, hope & desire. It closes the set, but is one of the highlights for me.Eddie Angel's rockabilly "Straight A's In Love" is a naughty little tune that puts a smile on my face each time it comes on the changer. :) Austin songwriter Damon Bramblett's take on "I'm Gonna Sit on the Porch & Pick on My Old Guitar" may not seem polished, but it does exude a warmth that brings me into the music.Chuck Mead from BR5-49 produced this disc and plays on every track. His lead vocals on "There You Go" set your toe tapping, "You're gone again, I should'a known I couldn't win...He's by your side, you're gonna break another heart, you're gonna tell another lie."The Mavericks' Raul Malo sounds a bit like Chris Isaak to me on the slow shuffle of "I Guess Things Happen That Way."Rodney Crowell has been recording a series of great solo sets as well as with the Notorious Cherry Bombs. Here he turns a straightforward reading of "Ballad of a Teenage Queen."Robbie Fulks' "Cry, Cry, Cry" booms with great energy. No one will ever replace Johnny Cash, but these artists do a great job with songs that he previously polished.Enjoy!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Nice Tribute
Hank III's "Wreck of the Old '97" makes this disc worth owning. His daring to break out of the mold that so many other artists have poured this song into, while still respecting the original, is reason enough to add this CD to your collection. ... Read more

I was born in 1931 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvina. That was way before TV.I remember all these artists and the songs. When they were appearing in Pittsburgh or Wheeling West Virginia (The WWVA Jamboree) I would be right there in the front row.I loved the music when it was Hillbilly, then country western and than The Nashville Sound.
5-0 out of 5 stars A perfect Appalachian honeymoon soundtrack
We bought this - on cassette - in Washington DC on our first day of honeymoon in September 1997. Having flown from Northern Ireland, it provided us with the perfect honeymoon soundtrack as we drove fromWashington to Nashville, along the Skyline drive, down through South WestVirginia, across Eastern Kentucky to Berea, and down to Smoky MountainsNational Park in Tennessee. We are from an Ulster-Scots/Scotch-Irishbackground, and during those three weeks we fell in love with the land thatour forebears had settled in so many centuries before, bringing thierfiddles and folk songs with them, creating what was the core of mountainold-time music and bluegrass. From the Carter Family right through, everysong is a classic. You must buy this! ... Read more

Years ago while I was overseas in the army I bought this tape and have enjoyed it very much. The tape has become old and worn and since I now have a computer the that plays CDs, personal CD player, CD player in my truck, and etc. I bought it on CD so I can continue to enjoy it for years to come. Don't be fooled this CD can be enjoyed by any and everybody of all ages. I am 35 yrs. old but I also own CDs by Britney Spears, NSYNC, CCR, Backstreet Boys, the Eagles, B.B. King, Christina Aguilera, and many others and I enjoy all of them. If you enjoy the samples you well enjoy the whole album.

5-0 out of 5 stars Country gold standard
Mainstream, popular Country music is what you get on this double CD album. From the dawn of the 1950s, when commercial recording interests took a firm hold on this particular strand of America's musical tradition, to the end of the 1980s, when other styles started to squeeze Country out of the charts.
5-0 out of 5 stars Four decades of country number ones
Only one of the thirty-six tracks here didn't make it to number one in the American country singles charts, that being God bless the USA, which the compilers understandably selected to represent Lee Greenwood here in preference to any of his country number one hits. In its way, that selection shows that number one is not the only thing that matters in the music business - some of the most famous songs in popular music never made it to number one in any chart. Nevertheless, the number one position does indicate a certain measure of popularity and this collection contains many great country classics.
4-0 out of 5 stars + 1/2 stars...Nearly Forty Years of Classic Country
This 36-track collection chronologically covers nearly four decades of country music beginning with Hank Williams 1951 hit "Hey, Good Lookin'" and ending with Patty Loveless's 1989 hit "Timber, I'm Falling in Love." For any 2-CD set to adequately cover four decades is a nearly impossible task--especially when both discs run under sixty minutes.

Editorial Review

For whatever reason, the so-called "Lost Provinces" of NorthCarolina--Ashe, Watauga, and Alleghany Counties--were a breeding groundfor fantastic string bands in the late '20s. Maybe it was the isolatedand tough nature of the region that inspired folks to turn to music. Orperhaps all those enterprising record companies were eager to signold-time musicians. Whatever the case, the talent on this anthology ofvintage 78 records is astounding and, at times, surprising. Is itpossible, for instance, to listen to the Woodie Brothers sing "LikesLikker Better Than Me"--a woman's lament for her alcoholic loveinterest--with a straight face? Probably not. And why the heck did JackReedy & His Walker Mountain String Band use a Hawaiian guitar for theintro to "Chinese Breakdown"? Don't worry, there's also plenty ofstraightforward and memorable string band music here from the likes ofGrayson & Whitter, Frank Blevins, the Smyth County Ramblers, and more. Throughout, you'llhear incredible old-time guitar, fiddle, and (thanks to Jack Reedy)banjo playing on a thoroughly engaging collection of laments, traditional tunes, and at least one presidential campaign number("Governor Al Smith For President"). 5-0 out of 5 stars great old-time music
Excellent collection of old-time stringband music. You may not like every song on the album but it is a great assortment of many different styles of playing and singing. A "must have"
5-0 out of 5 stars Super-cool, super rare old-timey music
It's pretty amazing, this late in the folkloric/historic reissues game, to find a whole album's worth of "undiscovered" old-timey music that is of such a high caliber.Old Hat Records, a tiny North Carolina indie label, packs its discs with some of the best music in the style that you're ever likely to hear.(You might also want to check out the "Violin, Sing For Me" and "Folks, He Sure Do Pull Some Bow" CDs...)This disc concentrates its attention geographically, collecting old 78s from artists out of Ashe County, NC, one of those backwoods areas unusually rich in hillbilly talent. The best known of these artists was the team of Grayson & Whitter (who were favorites of Ralph Stanley), but there are plenty of other great Ashe County artists on here, with fab names like The Woodies, The Carolina Night Hawks and (my favorite) Ephraim Woodie & The Henpecked Husbands. In addition to great sound quality and great material, both discs are also quite handsomely packaged; the insert booklets include some really cool archival photos, as well as extensive liner notes of the sort that have been woefully absent on similar recent reissue efforts.

5-0 out of 5 stars Astonishing
Sure, this CD probably isn't for everyone. If you like your music produced in such a way so that all the life, soul, and passion is drowned out in a slick, radio friendly sound, that makes it sound like everything else on the radio you need to steer very clear of this one.But if you like your music real, exciting, and full of life, snatch this one up pronto.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars All Sizzle No Steak
Unlike many "die hard" C&W fans reviewing this album who do not like this becasue they want contemporary dorks singing Hank's calssics or they never heard of artists like Beck; I hate this cd for other reasons. The main one is becasue it blows.A legend being covered by a star-studded lineup would make you doubt this review but it's true.I love Petty, Beck, Dylan and others on here and I also love great county music.Sadly, none of this matters here as the songs are lifeless, awkward, and depressing. It is a $3 cd at best with no songs worthy of any quality jukebox nor has any redeeming value for completists who want the rare b-side. If you must, download Emmylou's "Alone and Forsaken" as it is the best song of the bunch (and that aint sayin much)

5-0 out of 5 stars not country, not supposed to be
I think you country fans are being a little hard on this one. I think the point of this album is to, not only pay tribute to THE greatest singer songwriter of all time, but to introduce him to people who may not otherwise have heard his music. Who wants to hear Bocephus sing more of his daddys songs? He's done that already. When Hank Sr. Was alive and making music , there were only really 2 types of popular music (as opposed to the virtually limitless styles we have now ) being made: country & blues, both styles Hank openly embraced. So this album also pays tribute to that very same spirit of experimenting and cross-pollenation. Every artist on this album is notorious for dipping their respective feathers in many musical inks. Tom Petty, Keith Richards,Lucinda Williams, Ryan Adams & Hank III's contributions are the standouts to me , but there isn't one bad tune here. Anyone with a genuine love for Music, will appreciate 'Timeless'. Maybe modern ''Country'' artists like Toby Keith, Travis Tritt ,Brad Paisley, Kenny Chesney etc. should take notice of this one ,organize a stellar and respectful tribute the way Mr.Bob Dylan did here, and pay a little of their own respect to the Long Gone Daddy that made it possible for their music to be heard today.

5-0 out of 5 stars Truly, A "Timeless" Album!!
Boy,when I first listened to this tribute to the famous Hank Williams Sr., I thought, "Wow, how different this is!".

I liked this CD, but not every track.Beware, you cannot load it onto your computer.Had I known this, I would not have purchased the CD regardless of how much I like the soundtrack.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Music
Although O brother where art thou is not the best of Coen brother's films, this soundtrack is remarkable. "I' man of constant sorrow" is a logical hit, quite a catchy tune, but "Po Lazarus", "Big rock candy mountain" "I'll fly away" or "Down in the river to pray" give all sorts of bluegrass, country and gospel moods, all perfectly executed.
5-0 out of 5 stars A surprise!
I love this CD. Which is a shocker. I can't stand blue grass, don't even like country. But the quality of singing voices and the immpeckable instrumental execution makes me an admirer. I bought this cd because I watched the movie and Goerge Clooney's 'singing' performance made me laugh. I smile alot when listening to this cd. Very well done. ... Read more

great mix of odd-ball tunes; must-have for demento show fans; great music for people who enjoy music removed from the mainstream.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Twangy Review...
The CD is fabulous, but only if you like the type of music it has. It has some 'twangy' old country, and spoofs of a few "newer" country.A few songs are about beer, which is always good. If you appreciate the Dr. then you should appreciate this collection.

4-0 out of 5 stars Ooooooh...that's corny!
Dr. Demento has compiled a CD of funny country songs. Most of theses songs are very funny."I'm a Nut" is a hilarious song by a Roger Miller imitator."You Can't Roller Skate in a Buffalo Herd" is a hilarious song by the real Roger Miller."Achy Breaky Song" is about the song you love to hate."I'm My Own Grandpaw" is a country classic. The two Jerry Reed songs are great, and so are the two Ray Stevens songs.I also love the songs by Johnny Paycheck and "Little" Jimmy Dickens. The rest of the songs I didn't like as much, but they are still not bad. ... Editorial Review

Country music Christmas albums are often the biggest offenders of the holiday music formula: load in the maudlin, the mawkish, the over-produced, string-ridden tracks to make sure everybody knows how reverent they view the season and how important that marshmallow sentiment is this time of year. But the result is often just the opposite for discriminating listeners: after so many of these artists milk the treacle machine, nobody sounds genuine anymore and that rarefied Christmas sentiment is buried beneath layers and layers of pretty paper. That said, Read more

Editorial Review

Fellow songwriters shower their love on Billy Joe Shaver throughout this concert recording from his 65th birthday bash in Austin. Whereas tribute albums typically feature a variety of performers interpreting the honoree's material, here, many of the Texas troubadours choose to play their own songs influenced by Shaver or ones the rough-hewn renegade specifically requested for the occasion. The birthday boy proves his own best interpreter, opening the album with a hard-charging rendition of "Georgia on a Fast Train" and closing with the raucous resilience of "Try and Try Again" (in which he deals with the death of his wife and his son) and the soulful transcendence of "Tramp on Your Street." The between-song patter highlights the proceedings, with the respect Shaver receives from peers such as Guy Clark and Jimmie Dale Gilmore (who brings tremulous heartbreak to Shaver's "Hearts-a-Bustin'") equaling the awe he elicits from younger troubadours such as Todd Snider and Jack Ingram. As Joe Elysuggests, no one has found "a way of combining the spiritual and the honky-tonk" quite like Billy Joe. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A fitting tribute
I was there that night. The love for the man permeated the theater.Billy Joe has seen his share of hard times, but his faith in Jesus (even in these times when that seems to be a politically incorrect thing to say)and the love of his admiring fellow songwriters has gotten him through. The night after his son, Eddie, died (as Todd Snider, dropping his usual ironic stance so eloquently sings about in Waco Moon), Billy Joe was scheduled to play New Years Eve at Poodie's, a honky-tonk in Spicewood, Texas.Billy Joe was, understandably, devastated. His friend, Willie Nelson, himself a Spicewood resident, got Billy Joe on stage and the two just played songs for each other until three in the morning. No dry eyes in the house.
5-0 out of 5 stars 10 stars if I could
Great, such a tribute for such a poet. There are none better than Billy Joe.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Tribute to Billy Joe is one of the best CDs out there
I cannot take this CD out of my player. I love the stories that Todd Snider, Jack Ingram, Joe Ely, Robert Earl Keen and all the others tell about their songwriting hero, Billy Joe Shaver. And the songs are incredible!I highly recommend this album! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars I was thinking of the Other Nashville....
Listenable, but not quite what I was expecting....(dog-gone those expectations, they be little more than "future resentments"). I have it in the pickup for those long drives, so I am getting some enjoyment out of it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A showcase of unbelievable talent!
What can I say, I absolutely love this album. Every track is a guitar masterclass, other than maybe Boomer Castlemans effort which sounds like it was recorded very ad-hoc and thrown together without much thought, but is still kind of clever nonetheless. Other than that though these guys are truly the finest players in the world today, with the very obvious exceptions of Brent Mason, Ray Flacke and Albert Lee.
