Editorial Review

It’s Joan Osborne who sums it up best in the promotional material accompanying this tribute album: " Dolly Parton is a gifted artist cleverly disguised as a media superstar and sex bomb." Osborne’s got it right. Beyond and beneath Parton’s well-publicized and oft-caricatured curves and angles, lurks the heart and soul of one of modern country music’s very best songwriters--Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Two Magnificent and Historically Accurate Song Cycles About the American South
I accidentally ran into the cassette version of "The Story of Jesse James" probably shortly after the cassette was released. My 35 year old daughter remembers well hearing it played over and over again, when she was a child. Naturally, the tape finally wore out and I had no idea where to find another copy. I felt an unbelievable sense of loss because of this for many years, until I recently decided to search "Jesse" on Amazon.com, hoping to find that it had been re-released as a CD.
5-0 out of 5 stars A secret treasure!
I bought "The legend of Jesse James" vinyl LP in 1980 when I was 17 and was immediately struck by the solid writing, emotional narrative and excellent musicianship found on this concept album.I remember "One more shot" got some airplay on country radio stations at the time, but without the rest of the album to provide the appropriate context, the single didn't have much impact. One listen to the entire album, and it's hard not to be impressed by this collection of country/folk/rock jewels.
5-0 out of 5 stars The CD to save if your house was on fire!
White Mansions and especially The Legend of Jesse James gives me chills when I listen to it. I grew up in Clay County,Missouri right up the road from the James Farm. This music is so authentic in the style and the way the voices sound as if they are truly Missouri locals. Anybody who knows the true outlaw story of the James Boys knows this cd is so dead on it will make the hair stand up on the back of your neck. Jesse James is not just a train robber but a true southern farmer turned guerilla who just wanted his money back from the Yankee Feds. This CD has the best I believe of Waylon & Jessi, Johnny Cash and Levon Helm singing in a southern rock style that will have you swilling sweetea out of a mason jar. If you like hog callers and mules, tobacco and whiskey culture and realize the Civil War really started on the southern Frontier in Missouri, buy this you will play it for years!!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This Bluegrass CD is Excellent!!!!!!
There are 19 tracks on this CD and with the exception of 1-2 songs, this may well be one of the best bluegrass CDs I own. What a buy!Eight More Miles with Laurie Lewis, Claire Lynch, Lynn Morris and Rhonda Vincent steal the show here.I have been a lover of bluegrass for over 25 years and this CD is a must have for everyone.

3-0 out of 5 stars Lacks the Cohesion of her Brother
The collection of songs on "O Brother" was made very deliberately, with a wonderful ear toward a "comprehensive" overall sound. But there was no such brilliant and strong guiding force at work for "O Sister", which is essentially a compilation of various female Rounder artistes.5-0 out of 5 stars wow
I was just thummin' through some free downloads when I ran into this cd and thought I would give it a try.thinking nothing of it I started playing them.after listening to the samples rour times I decied to get it for myself.the songs are equally catchy up deat and addicitve.the banjo is a beautiful insterment which the cd contains a lot of is old time sound.if you like bluegrass your collection wont be complete without this cd I imagin the frist one is just as good. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars worst of the totally country series
Can't recommend this one. I am a huge fan of country music especially the new stuff. Not this collection. Where is George Strait? Where is Gary Allan? Not even the best from Dirks Bentley. Save your money on this one. Miranda Lambert is hardly on the charts. Why does she have a selection let alone being first on the album?

5-0 out of 5 stars It Just Keeps Getting Better
The fifth issue of the Totally Country series delivers another great set of recent country hits that are frequently broadcast on the radio. Many of these hits were also made into videos that can be seen on country music TV networks.

Editorial Review

As the Man in Black celebrates his 70th birthday, he looks back on a career not only of legendary performances, but of remarkable songs that capture a bygone America, in vignettes of trains, rivers, rebels, street-corner shoeshine boys, and displaced lovers, moving on, never to return. To honor that contribution, now part of America's musical heritage, more than a dozen luminaries of country, rock, and folk--including Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, and Sheryl Crow--gather to interpret Cash's word portraits of the downtrodden and disenfranchised. Nearly every performance is a keeper, though some deliver a special thrill: Dylan introducing his rendition of "Train of Love" as a song he used to sing before he ever wrote songs himself; Little Richard turning "Get Rhythm" into even more of a rockabilly raver; and Cash's daughter, Rosanne, giving "I Still Miss Someone" a clean, sweet reading that underscores its poignant message. Yet it's Springsteen, in a cover of "Give My Love to Rose," who comes to own the project, laying bare the pain, hope, spirituality, love, and despair that Cash wove into the framework of almost all of his songs. An extraordinary set from, yes, kindred spirits all. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous Tribute Album
I heard Emmylou Harris, Sheryl Crow and Mary Chapin Carpenter perform "Flesh and Blood" during a televised tribute to Johnny Cash.I became "obsessed" with finding this song.Unable to download the song any of the music services, I purchased the entire CD from Amazon. This is arguably one of the BEST tribute CDs I have ever heard. While maintaining the flavor of Johnny's music, each artist takes the song and makes it their own. This is not "Johnny Cash Karaoke."It is some of the best artists in country, pop, folk and blues honoring The Man In Black.Among my favorites (though I like all the songs) are Travis Tritts slow and emotional rendition of "I Walk the Line" and Dwight Yoakum's hillbilly rock on "Understand Your Man."I've never been a fan of Hank Williams, Jr. but LOVE his version of "Big River."I am thankful I wasn't able to just download "Flesh and Blood" or I would have missed what has become one of my absolute favorite CDs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Little Richard Rocks!!!
This is a great album - a wonderful selection of Cash treasures and treasured artists, masterfully produced by Marty Stuart. He said he had to fight to get rock pioneer Little Richard into the studio.Well the fight was well worth it.Although Little Richard makes 'Get Rhythm' a rock 'n' roll track, it is a wonderful tribute to Cash as a songwriter. And if you like rock 'n' roll, this is the only track you'll be feeling. If you don't like to rock, then you may want to skip this track. But check it out, Little Richard hasn't missed a beat in over 50 years of recording!

5-0 out of 5 stars What an Amazing Tribute to an Amazing Man
I saw the CMT Special on TV that was made when this album was being recorded and it was almost as good as the album. They interviewed the artists and Johnny & June Cash.Plus you see the artists sing their version of these songs live. Johnny Cash sure seemed to like them all. He said Keb' Mo's version of "Folsum Prison Blues" was great and he thought Travis Tritt's rendition of "I Walk The Line" was the best he ever heard. Seems to me he ought to know if anyone does and I must say I agree with Johnny. I love this album and every song on it. I also have them all sung by Johnny Cash, also GREAT. As to the whiners that complain about the different interpertations of these songs.Who would want to hear a Johnny Cash song sung by someone else if they were just trying to sound like Johnny Cash?(As if anyone could) Now that would suck! If you want to hear Johnny Cash singing Johhny Cash then buy a Johnny Cash album there are plenty out there and all of them are GREAT. Anyone who does not like the tracks on here dosen't know Jack about good music. This is a TRIBUTE to Johhny Cash by some of the best artists in country music singing the songs their way, making them their own and doing a great job of it. Oh by the way "Meet me in Heaven" is sung by Janette Carter, a member of the Carter Family who won many awards including a Grammy, not June Carter Cash Johnny's wife, with Johnny joining in.Janette's voice like Johnny's matured with the years. Take it for what it is a loving tribute to a Great Man. This album would be a bargin at twice the price. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The finest set of western swing ever. Timeless fun!
Western swing fans will be dancing in the streets over this brilliant box set. It features 99 cuts dating from 1932 through the late 40's. They run chronologically and features all the great architects of western swing: Milton Brown & his musical Brownies, Bob Wills & his Texas Playboys, Light Crust Doughboys etc. Even if you're not a fan of country music, you may enjoy this one. It is genuine feel-good, stomping music with honkytonk pianos, fiddles, drums, guitars and even saxes. This is without a doubt the best buy for any fan of this genre. It is timeless fun! Crank it all the way up, pop open a cold one and all of sudden it's 1938 and you're in a Dallas honky tonk.By the way, the liner notes in the booklet are outstanding with dates, pixs, stories. Most interesting was that the Crystal Springs Ramblers from Ft. Worth were a favorite of Bonnie and Clyde's at a popular dance hall down there. Great job by Proper Records!

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Luck in trying to find something better !
I read some of the other reviews and I can apperciate a lot what other folks are saying. I really agree with the one who said that todays Country Music makes them sick. What in the name of God does a naked Faith Hill rolling around a bed under the sheets singing some half baked so called Modern Country have to do with the music that I was raised on and grown to love. As the Great Bill Monroe stated "That junk ain't part of nothing",(I saw that on a FH video that was being played on cabel TV). What a moral let down, instead of appearing as one of our Country Stars she looks a lot more like a B-girl- that's where we are today. I said all that to say this: If you love WesternSwing like I do then you will love this set - it really has a lot of good stuff and takes you back to the days of Bob, Milton,Tommy,Leon, Spade and many other outstanding Western Swing artists. This set was a real welcome to my Swing Collection.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Overview Of Western Swing
This 4 volume box set by Proper is a fantastic overview of that great American musical art form Western Swing.

4-0 out of 5 stars Should've Had Bocephus on it
In case you don't know who I'm talking about, "Bocephus" is the nickname for Hank Williams Junior. This cd is awesome, but if they had put Hank on the album, it would've been perfect.I say this because, in my opinion, Hank Jr is the country artist in the history of country music, period.George Jones was a great pick for a duet partner with Kathy Mattea on the song "You've got a friend in me", but personally, I would asked Hank to sing it instead.I guess that's because I think that Hank has the most unique country-singing voice that I've ever heard, and also because the style of musical arrangement for "you've got a friend in me" sounds kind of like "Family Tradition".At least, to me, it does. (Listen closely to both songs, and you'll notice the similarities and differences). When I heard George Jones singing his part on the album, I could easily hear Hank singing it instead. All that said, the cd is still awesome.I don't much care for Collin Raye's or Tanya Tucker's recordings here, but the album is still definitely worth the money I spent to buy it.In fact, I think the Disney company should put out another country-Disney album like this, and have some of the new country artists on it, and stop putting out this "Disneymania" bubble-gum pop crap that they've been putting out in the past few years.

5-0 out of 5 stars BEST CD
I've been a DJ in country bars for the last 15 years. When this CD came out, I had to have it. I figured it would be just for my personal enjoyment, but I found that these versions filled my dance floor. Pam Tillis' "Colors of the Wind" is a crowd favorite and in my opinion she owns that song now. "Kiss the Girl" by Little Texas is still a favorite for the County Line line dance.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best of Both Worlds
This CD has everything. If you love country, it has twelve songs sung by different country singers and groups. If you love Disney, it has some of the best known Disney songs ever. The singers picked to sing each song are phenomenal!A different review pointed out that you don't need to be a lover of Disney AND country to love this, because you can truly appreciate this CD for what it is, some of the most beautifully sung Disney music out there.Oh, and if you feel that you've heard these songs too many times anyway, you should also know this. Some songs, especially SOME DAY MY PRINCE WILL COME, have been redone completely.I'd actually have to say in that case it was an improvement;)But don't just take my word for it.Listen and enjoy! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great bluegrass -- Excellent value
All-instrumental collections of bluegrass are hard to find, and if you like it when a band takes a break from singing and just plays their instruments, here's your chance for total immersion. All the songs on this compilation are from Rounder Records albums released 1976-1998, by artists with familiar names like Alison Krauss and Tony Rice, and others you may never have heard of.All are first rate, foot stompin' renditions of bluegrass traditionals, with a few great originals -- Bill Monroe's "Bluegrass Breakdown" and Earl Scruggs' "Foggy Mountain Chimes." Best known for most listeners is a rousing version of "Orange Blossom Special" by the Johnson Mountain Boys. If you like bluegrass with plenty of pickin' at breakneck speed, this CD will keep you smilin' through many, many replays.

2-0 out of 5 stars Bluegrass Breakdown: 14 Instrumentals

5-0 out of 5 stars US country covers of Beatles songs that works brilliantly
The concept of different music styles being applied to another e.g. Dylan songs having had both spiritual choirs and reggae tribute CDs, is one of those gambles that when it works can be brilliant. This is one of those succesful cases taking the great Beatles songbook and having a range of different country and western (not all of them well known to me) apply a range of interpretations.
5-0 out of 5 stars NOT A NEW IDEA
Literally 100s of country artistes have made Beatles songs and one of the best was Emmylou Harris' "Here there & everywhere" from the 70s.5-0 out of 5 stars This album worked it out

5-0 out of 5 stars Blue Grass Gospel Classics
If you love Blue Grass Gospel - this one is for you.Mountain Gospel at its best.

5-0 out of 5 stars Angels, yes indeed!! Sweetest sounds in Bluegrass
It's really about time the women got their due.For many years men seemed to dominate bluegrass music, but with the resurgence caused by "O-Brother.." and "Down From The Mountain", the ladies are making their way to front and center.4-0 out of 5 stars An anthology that wears well, very well
This collection begins with an old standard by the Cox Family setting a familar tone which is quickly broken. "Wayfaring Stranger" is the only other standard Gospel number but its execution with a bluesy clarinet is anything but standard; bluegrass clarinet works splendidly. Hazel Dickens provides a mother/memory piece in "Faded Pressed Rose" - she delivers an intensely emotional piece without ever sounding sacchrine. The Stevens Sisters' bluesy rendition of "In My Time of Dying" balances death and faith in well balanced close harmony. And OlaBelle Reed cuts us all down to size in a riveting performance of "Six Feet of Earth Makes Us All of One Size".Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Nashville's attempt at alt-country
As soul-less a compilation of alt-country as I've come across..."This is Americana" (or at least how Nashville supposedly has defined it) rarely gets off the ground. The few good songs on here get dragged down by annoying filler.
1-0 out of 5 stars EXCUSE ME, BUT WHERE ARE
Chris Hillman and Herb Pedersen, Bernie Leadon, Steve Young, the Woodys and even Burrito Deluxe?
5-0 out of 5 stars How can you NOT buy this for such a low price?
Whether your perspective on this CD is as an introduction to broader musical interests or a supplement to your current collection of Americana material, you simply can't pass up this bargain.I was already a fan of large amouts of bluegrass and alternative country, two genres intertwined with the "Americana" scene, so I knew several songs on this compilation already. However, it's a good listen in itself, and it sent me off to buy more good music I'd just discovered.

5-0 out of 5 stars good instrumental
a very pleasant and somewhat haunting cd, easy listening at it's best for western songs,cd only has 10 songs on it but they are all very good and easily worth the price. This cd would be good to play for background music also.I would like to see more of these cd's.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice Cowboy CD
i really like the CD. it has nice instrumentals of many classic cowboy songs. the quality is very good too. the only downfall is that the CD is only about 30 minutes long so it is quite short. but other than that, i recommend it for anyone wanting to hear these nice classic songs.

1-0 out of 5 stars Hmm...
Mainstream "country" is pretty much all watered-down crap these days, so this CD naturally doesn't appeal to me. However, the one surpisingly bright spot on this otherwise dull compilation album is "I Want You to Want Me" by Dwight Yoakam. Kudos to whoever decided to put him on this CD, because it shows that at least SOMEONE in the corporate Nashville music industry has real, honest-to-God taste in good country music.
5-0 out of 5 stars Totally Country, Finally
1. Only In America - (5/5) This is a great song and a nice message. It's not neccessarily like Toby Keith and Darryl Worrley's "worship the US" songs (although i like those to, hehe) yet simply a song that points out the positives in the good 'ol USA.5-0 out of 5 stars Great Stuff
It's not often you find a CD with 17 of the very best selections. This is one of those special buys that you are destined to play over and over. I made a copy to keep from wearing out the original. The selection of songs, themes, and styles is varied, yet they blend well enough together to keep you singing along. I discovered some new favorites after just one listen. Even if you are not a die-hard country fan you will enjoy this CD, I did.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wife loves it
I purchased this for my wife and she listens to it weekly and really puts her in a great mood. The selection of songs and the diversity of the singers styles keep it fresh and one never tires of listening to it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not as great as seen on TV
The album has a good selection of songs although it is skinnied down from the cable-advertised double CD set. My only disappointment was that the arrangements were generally not as rich as the originals of some of the songs. For example "i don't want to miss a thing"....maybe it just shouldn't have been covered as a country song at all. The CD is still on my car CD playlist , so there's definitely some good in it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not the same as shown on TNT
I was very disappointed with this CD. After receiving the CD's we ordered we saw the TV ad on TNT again and discovered this CD is not the same as seen on TV. The CD on TNT is a 2 CD set with 32 songs while this is a single CD with 18. For the $3.00 difference I would rather have the other CD. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Listen All Day Long
As an owner of the original Ultimate Country Party CD, I was skeptical when I saw the play list, as to whether this one could live up to the standard set by its predecessor. However, one listen through reveals that YES! it is a great listen. What I love about both albums in particular is that they are mixed so well. This album goes from fast to slower songs with out missing a beat.It makes excellent background music at a party (no need to switch discs), perfect car trip music (for people who can't agree on just one artist), and I love to listen to it at work because the variety of artists keeps me from feeling like I am hearing the same thing over and over again. For ultimate country fans this is a great compilation.

4-0 out of 5 stars Ultimate Country Party 2
I never bought the first one, but this one is definitely a must buy!Ever since I bought it I can't stop listening to it.There were only one or two songs I hadn't heard before, but the rest are popular country songs thatwill rock any party! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Music the Whole Family Can Enjoy
If you're looking for something that isn't Eminem to play for your kids in the car, perhaps some good ol' trucking music is your speed. My two boys (3 & 5) love to sing along. Give me 40 Acres is a huge hit, and some of the ballads are laugh out loud corny. Definitely worth the minimal investment for all these great tunes.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Songs but incomplete info
Wow! What a great compiliation of trucking songs. It's a pity they didn't include more artist info & recording dates.(We IPod'ers need this info.)

4-0 out of 5 stars hit the road jack
this could be consolidated to an AMAZING single cd compilation. as it stands, there's a lot of filler on this; some of which has little or nothing to do with truck driving. kansas city? tie a yellow ribbon? a harmonica driven version of take me home country roads? damn it, neither john denver nor tony orlando was ever behind the wheel of an 18 wheeler, so why are they here??? other gripes include duplication of the same song by different artists in basically the same arrangements, and some just plain ordinary boring numbers. that said, you get lots of red sovine & dave dudley, some cool tunes by minnie pearl, grandpa jones, and the willis brothers, and a killer (no pun intended) stretch on disc 2 concerning trucks wrecks. unless you are an insane truck driving music collector (and frankly, who isnt?) (billy joel isnt, thats fer sure), this will be good enough for you. PUT DOWN THE STROKES CD AND BUY THIS, YA PUTZ!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars They Just Keep Cranking Them Out
Here comes the third release of the "Totally Country" series, a collection of 17 relatively recent country hits (fairly new at the time that this album first became available, in 2003).Generally, these songs were popular on the radio and on music videos in the past couple of years immediately preceding this album's breaking out onto the shelves.
