Editorial Review

Modern folk and blues rarely sounds as inventive and colorful as the Wood Brothers' spare, soothing studio debut. Currents of jazz, pop, and country also ripple through these 12 lovely arrangements built around Chris Wood's upright bass (previously heard in Medeski, Martin & Wood) and Oliver Wood's gentle acoustic and electric guitars. It's not simply that the brothers' sweet, high voices have the genetic gift of close harmony: they're in absolute synch creatively, too. So when one's singing lingers over a lazy phrase in a number like the languid ode to living "Chocolate on My Tongue," the other hangs back on his instrument until just the right, complementary moment. Drummer Kenny Wollesen, who plays on a handful of tracks, is on the same wavelength--never rushing or pushing the Woods' behind-the-beat sensibility. And the rich dark tones of the bass and, in particular, slide guitars perfectly illuminate their unhurried stories about spiritual discovery and the trials of life. All of which makes Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Another vote for Emmylou's voice....
I definitely agree, that listening to the best of this CD, is pure heaven...and to my ears, if you buy this beautiful album, just enable the following cuts and listen to them over.....and over...that's heaven....
5-0 out of 5 stars To touch the heart.
The fact that Emmylou Harris is breathtakingly beautiful distracts only very slightly from her amazing grace as a singer. She is truly touched and truly moving.

4-0 out of 5 stars One fault---this needed to be a two-disk set!
Otherwise, it's wonderful.Really does span the years, but I think there are some places where more emphasis is needed and would have preferred to see a second disk to do it. ... Read more

Named in honor of the three-word codes used by short-wave radio operators, Wilco's fourth album sounds like a late-night broadcast of some weirdly wonderful pop station punctuated by static and the sonic bleed of competing signals. Songs that begin with simple, elegiac grace--"Ashes of American Flags" and "Poor Places"--end in a cathartic squall of distortion. The results can be initially jarring, but it's these tracks more than the sturdy jangle pop of "Kamera" or "Heavy Metal Drummer" that demand, and reward, repeated listens. Mixed by studio experimentalist Jim O'Rourke and produced by the band, Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Intense emotional beauty
If you don't like this album, you're missing the point. It took me a while to get into it, but its one of those CD's that, when you finally do get it, becomes infinitely rewarding because you feel like you've unlocked something.Give it a few listens, and somehow the superficial ordinary pop will simply melt into something truly powerful and moving. There's no excuse for not appreciating the tremendous beauty and warmth of this album. It captures some ideas and emotions beautifully, and it also has something that just feels classic about it, as if it somehow fits with the albums of Bob Dylan, The Band, Neil Young, and The Beatles, as the product review wants you to believe.Believe it-- this is truly a classic.

1-0 out of 5 stars soft
Wilco is basically just a really soft band that could use a bit more pep if you ask me. I tend to like soft music just fine, but the songs on this CD simply don't have good melodies to offer. If you happen to like Wilco anyway in spite of my review, check out Golden Smog, because they're similar to Wilco but infinitely better. P.S. The cover art is the best part.

5-0 out of 5 stars Breathtaking...
This album is amazing. It took me about 3 listens in order to fully appreciate the album, so don't give up on it if you don't get it at first.I listened to it so much that I wore out my first copy and had to buy a second."Jesus, Etc." and "Ashes of American Flags" are two of the best Wilco songs ever made.Jeff Tweedy is at his best.I'd also suggest watching the documentary "I am Trying to Break Your Heart," which chronicles to making of the album and the troubles that went along with it.It gave me a new appreciation for my favorite artist. ... Torn and frayed, the voice of Lucero singer Ben Nichols epitomizes a band that spends half it's time on the highway driving to the next gig. But judging by the fun the Memphis four-piece appears to be having on its fifth album, that road may go on forever. Produced by David Lowry (Camper Van Beethoven, Cracker), the record draws a parallel with its 2005 release Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent choice
This is an awesome album. The vocals have an almost Springsteen sound. The lyrics are so powerful and heartfelt. "What else would you have me be?" is one of the best songs on the album, and "San Francisco" is my personal favorite. I recommend this album to anyone who can appreciate good, fresh music.

4-0 out of 5 stars Sing me no hymns...
...pour me a tall glass of whiskey and let's have some fun rock n rollers. Lucero plays it on this album. It's a tasteful product all the way around from the album title, cover, art, pictures, song titles, song choruses, lyrics, guitar licks, lead licks right where you need 'em, f***in' lyrics again, f***in' cymbals with base and guts with f***in'...f***in'...vocals and drums! And 1, 2,3,4's! Let's pull out the fine china and f***in dance on it. ... Read more

On his two early-1970s solo albums, collected here on one disc, Gram Parson lends his fragile, aching tenor to music that's the definition of what he called "country soul." Neither of these titles is quite as strong as the work Parsons had previously done with the Byrds and the Flying Burrito Brothers, but with originals as great as "She" and "In My Hour of Darkness"--not to mention backing from Emmylou Harris and the core of Elvis's early-'70s band--both Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars after over thirty years this album still holds up
I was one of the few to buy this album when it first came out. I listened to it daily for many months and then it was forgotten. Until the other night, when I saw the documentaryFallen Angel. After seeing the movie, I pulled out the old record and took another listen and I can tell you that it sounded even better than when I last listened to it. AndI am not a country fan but this is an album that transcends all categories. The words to many of the songs are pure poetry and the singing, sometimes with Emmy Lou Harris, is beyond perfect.I want to be listening to this album the day before I die.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Country Romantic
The first time I listened to this CD (or more accurately, these 2 albums) I was not too enthusiastic--mostly because I had been hearing the name Gram Parsons permanently linked with "country rock." Well, as other reviewers have pointed out, not much rock in here. But the misnomer is not Parsons fault, and I really don't care too much for such labels anyway. Upon further listening, I found myself thoroughly enchanted. Yep, the blue-eyed soulfulness is apparent, even among the twangier tunes. And I can't argue with the notion that Parsons, clearly a romantic for country music, conveys a distinctively "rock 'n' roll" attitude throughout. All of it blends together magnificently. And the kicker, for me at least, is the presence of guitar legend James Burton--his contributions alone make the CD worthwhile.

5-0 out of 5 stars a good saloon in every single town...
What do you say about this CD?When you drive across the country and every single city has its own radio station or five playing the kind of hybrid of traditional country and rock-n-roll invented by this man and essentially perfected on these two albums? My oh my, it takes a lot to leave a loudmouth like me speechless but here goes...

It might be tempting to describe Kentucky's Chris Knight as the poor man's Steve Earle (if the original weren't still doing a pretty good job at it). While the hard twang of the guitar and the hardscrabble lyrics recall Earle's early classic albums, Knight continues to establish himself on his fourth release as one of the most powerful (and underrecognized) artists in alternative country. Produced by Gary Nicholson and mixed by Earle's "twangtrust" partner Ray Kennedy, the album pulls no punches, whether rocking the roadhouse at the end of "River Road," venting anger at the developers who are treating Grandpa's land like "Dirt," or detailing a dead-end life in the title track. Yet the redemptive "Saved by Love" and the yearning "Too Close to Home" evoke equally strong emotions that balance the album's darker strains. If "Cry Lonely" isn't a hit for Knight, it deserves to be one for somebody. Knight's eye for detail and command of tone have the compression of great short stories, though Southern Gothic rarely rocks this hard. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Wolf Outside Your Door
"Enough Rope" continues the excellent work of this excellent artist. The set opens with the hot rocker "Jack Blue" with Kenny Greenberg's electric guitar stinging; and Dan Dugmore's pedal steel crying plaintively, "You don't go looking for trouble.Ain't that what the old folks say?Don't go looking for trouble, it'll find you anyway."This is followed in a 1-2 punch with the aching slow song "Cry Lonely" with Chris' vocal ringing with longing & regret, "You always say your heart is breaking & you hear the wolf outside your door; But I know you're just using me 'til you don't need me anymore."The wolf image is reflected in Wayne Brezinka's cover design."Saved by Love" is another strong song that tugs on the heartstrings with Dan Dugmore's pedal steel aching.Dugmore is a longtime musical veteran from Linda Ronstadt & James Taylor's heyday to more recently Keith Urban & Lee Ann Womack. His touch throughout this set is masterful."Rural Route" is a sweet country throwback to a more gentle time, "I built a fire up on the hill; sat in the woods & drank my fill; Talked to God all night; Took another shot & set me right.""Dirt" oozes anger with Knight letting the fur fly in his ripping vocals, "Company came from out of state to build another stinking factory; Them county politicians think they know just exactly what we need; But I sit down by the highway. I hear those big Cats growl.Where the quail gonna fly?Where will the rabbits run now?""Up from the Hill" is another classic rocker with a churning guitar line that sounds like something from Day Tripper-era Beatles mixed in with backwoods pedal-to-the-metal rock, "2 a.m. in the morning, he done pissed off all his friends; He'll come knocking on Vessie's door; She's the only one let him in.""Bridle On a Bull" is another classic rocker that'd fit comfortably on a Johnny Cash record.Knight seems to continue the saga of "William" from his self-titled brilliant CD that appeared on Decca with "William's Son" with more on the guy raised without enough love."To Get Back Home" is another burning rocker with Chris' voice ripping through mounds of emotion. The set ends with the slower tempo of the title track as Chris looks at a life that has a lot of blessings and a lot of dreams that may never come true."Enough Rope" is a powerful CD.The musicianship is first-rate; and the set is paced well with a nod to the faster tempo.Chris Knight seems to embody the lonely guy persona, a man who wants to do the right thing but every now and then gets just a little ticked off. This CD has hugged my changer repeatedly.Bravo!

5-0 out of 5 stars KNIGHT ROCKS
JUST AWESOME, EVERYTHING STEVE EARLE SHOULD HAVE BECOME AND MORE. NO SELL OUT OR CMT COMPROMISE HERE.

5-0 out of 5 stars Chris Knight's "Tunnel Of Love"
I'm only going to write this review for the people you are already on board with Chris Knight.I wish mass commercial success would open up for Chris Knight because he deserves it.There are very few people who ever came down the pike that are in Chris Knight's league.I always thought that Chris was a country version of Bruce Springsteen. That being said this is his "Tunnel Of Love" album.A little softer, not as dark, dare I say a little pop here and there?Just when you think he has a song that might break on the radio you realize there was one line in the song that said "strung out like some junkie in a back alley".Oops! That won't fly on country radio. There are still several hard rockers on here that will blow you away in concert as much as anything he has ever done.If you haven't seen Chris Knight in concert, go to his web site and find a concert to go to.When your at the concert try at some point during the show get close enough that you can see his face. His passion and intensity will give you goosebumps. No theatrics.Honest, real, humble, and intense. ... A ghost, a band, a troubadour. Easily the strangest co-op project ever, and easily one of the finest and most evocative albums of the year. British socialist and folkie Billy Bragg was given unprecedented access to Woody Guthrie's unrecorded lyrics. Teaming up with alt-country band Wilco and quoting from more than 50 years of country, folk, and rock music, Billy and company bring Guthrie's politics, poetry, and morality to the end of the century and prove he's as necessary now as ever. 4-0 out of 5 stars Woody Guthrie Lyrics to Billy Bragg Tunes
You'll find yourself singing along after the first listen. California Stars and Ain't Nobody that Can Sing like me are new favorites for me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Something to Bragg About, for Wilco ,too.
This is an example of the brilliance that results when two great talents join forces to write music and record the lyrics of American folk music icon, Woody Guthrie.Bragg and Tweedy collaborate seamlessly to set to music the words that Guthrie wrote over 50 years ago, and it still sounds fresh today.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic
This is a reply to those reviewers who think that Guthrie "really wasn't all that left-wing" or that Bragg is, by comparison, too "didactic" or "rabidly left-wing" (as some would have it).The fact is that Bragg can't imagine being as politically radical as Guthrie was, not because Bragg is a closet liberal, but because Guthrie was a part of a radical movement in the United States the likes of which is simply not to be found in the U.S. or Britain nowadays.

As the title of Gary Allan's sixth album suggests, there's no change of pace or lightening up on his darkest collection to date (and first since his wife's suicide). Love goes bad on the bittersweet "Best I Ever Had," gets brutal on "I Just Got Back from Hell," and turns positively lethal on "He Can't Quit Her." The closest Allan comes to an affirmative sentiment is the schmaltzy "Life Ain't Always Beautiful," though an extended guitar solo brings the rock balladry of "Putting My Misery on Display" to a soul-stirring finale. "Nickajack Cave" evokes the mythic redemption of Johnny Cash, but there's no redemption for Allan here. He sounds like he's trying so hard to convey life's hard lessons that the comparative understatement of "Puttin' Memories Away" comes as a relief. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Tough All Over - Gary Allan
Allan's latest outing is a neo-traditional masterpiece. There isn't a throwaway track on the entire album.Raw and powerful, Allan's songwriting and presentation really showcase the pain of loss but also the beauty of having loved.Allan is always a treat to listen to, especially with his unique, gritty vocals and the production of the music. The power of the raunchy yet traditional guitar and drum work invoke some of the greatest traditionalist country of the last decade which include Allan, Danni Leigh and the Bastard Sons of Johnny Cash.As exhibited on "Tough Little Boys" and "Smoke Rings in the Dark", he can really deliver an emotional ballad, and this album doles it out in spades, but he can also really crank it on songs like "Ring" and the amazing and honest "Nickajack Cave".This makes it my pick for the best male country album of 2006.

5-0 out of 5 stars ABSOLUTLY THE BEST!
I am biased - I love Gary Allan. I have every CD - I love every song...but this one...it speaks volumes about the power of music. He could have dealt with his pain in a private way or he could have done this. Putting his misery on display is the only way a musician, an artist, a writer can deal with life. This man is the most amazing musician, honest, raw and true to his own blood. He follows his heart, he stays true to himself and while he may not be CMA Entertainer of the Year or even Male Vocalist of the Year - he is by far the most talented and most unique country artist out there. The true irony of life would be if this intense personal album brings him the overdue credit that he deserves. Perhaps the personal tragedy behind the album will bring a sense of peace to other people dealing with the same inner pain as Gary's wife and they will feel that they are not alone. BTW - a chapter in my book is titled "Life Ain't Always Beautiful"...but I swear Gary Allan has it right, life is a freaking beautiful ride!

4-0 out of 5 stars Gary Allen Scores Big with Darkness
Gary Allen's latest offering "Tough All Over" may be a very dark album overall, but Gary and coproducer Mark Wright do a fabulous job of exploring Gary's pain. Althoughthe album is rather "dark", Gary's voice cuts through with a "true-to-life" hurt. He's literally "been there, done that", especially with the three songs he co-wrote: "I Just Got Back From Hell", "Puttin' Memories Away" and the album's closer "Puttin' My Misery On Display". The Southern California native doesn't need to prove where he's been lately. You can hear it in every song. Tasty lead guitar licks from studio ace Brent Rowan and a sparingly used string section, bring this album home in great style. Two of Nashville's best backup singers: John Wesley Ryles and Wes Hightower compliment Gary's sometimes edgy voice with style. The first hit of the album "Best I Ever Had" will remain one of Country's most haunting ballads, especially after seeing the video. This is a healing album for Gary, who last year experienced the tragedy of losing his loving wife. Gary took very little time off to let the hurt fester, instead choosing to stay on the road and work through his pain. He's an awesome concert performer as well. A great piece of work from a great singer and songwriter. I see this album eventually going Platinum, and deservedly so. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars simply great music
This is a wonderful record. Its moody and moving. There is great spacing in the production meaning there are lots of places in the mix to hear all of the subtle things going on, it is not over produced. 5-0 out of 5 stars Less idiosyncratic Lambchop = a superb release
Damaged only has 10 songs, but the result is the first Lambchop release that you actually wish didn't end so soon. Previous CDs have tended to be overlong, bordering on tediousness and somewhat same-sounding. Don't misunderstand me, their back catalog is impressive and Lambchop is a great, unique band, but it can be a chore to listen to many of their full length releases from start to finish. Not this one.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fine live collection but why now?
It's been four years since Counting Crow's last studio album "Hard Candy". Since then, tille has been heard from the band, other than the occasional live touring. That was the case again this summer, when Counting Crows combined forces with the Goo Goo Dolls for a long (and successful) co-headlining trek.
4-0 out of 5 stars For lovers of Counting Crows
Of course if you love Counting Crows, you are obligated to get this CD. It's nice to hear some of the "old school" songs like Perfect Blue Buildings and Omaha, and there is some newer stuff as well. I was expecting more than a less-than-three-minute new release (Hazy), but even his old stuff is slightly different than what is on the other CD's. Given that this is a live CD Adam of course changes up his songs (as he always does at his concerts). I can never get enough of this band, and I would highly recommend this CD.

5-0 out of 5 stars This huge Crows fan loved it
I've been a fan of Counting Crows since I was 12 when they debued in '92. I have EVERYTHING they've ever done and this is yet another great edition to my collection. Adam Duritz' insomniac groove leaves me craving more. You can't say that these guys are "wicked awesome" or that they "totally rock out" cause thats just not their groove. But on a nite when you want to know that somebody else out there can't sleep and wants to eat ice cream on the couch, its good to know you can pop these guys in and sing along. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The World Begins to Disappear...
Counting Crows are an absolute blast of a band to listen to or play along with. Ever begining guitarist needs to learn Mr. Jones for it's immediatly recognizable party appeal, and almost every other song on this disk can be played by a single acoustic just as well. Films about Ghosts presents a bouncy set of Counting Crows best songs, combing 90's alt pop with a bit of lyrical genius to form an irresistable combo.

5-0 out of 5 stars This album is just great!
This album is excellent, this new version also has "Accidentally in Love" that is a cool song too.

Editorial Review

After Chris Hillman dragged new friend Gram Parsons into the Byrds, they made an album as close to a country masterpiece as a rock act could ever make. In fact, the only tunes better than the definitive covers here of songs by Bob Dylan ("You Ain't Going Nowhere"), Guthrie ("Pretty Boy Floyd"), and the Louvin Brothers ("The Christian Life") are Parsons's originals, especially the incomparable "Hickory Wind." 3-0 out of 5 stars Heretic #2
Gram was pretty (say what you want but that's part of it), now he's dead but he still can't sing.Everybody's riding that wagon about how important this album is and that's an arguable point, but get back to the music and while I still occasionally enjoy hearing a bunch of good ole hippie's try country, it's pretty much amateur hour compared to MH, JC, WJ, and WN. The Stones did a lot better "country" than this.

5-0 out of 5 stars Influential - stands the test of time
At a time when rock bands were beginning to explore other genres, The Byrds released rhis record which took them back to their country roots. A fabulous blend of originals and covers the approach led the way for the country-rock revival of the early 70's and influenced a host of bands not the least of which was the Grateful Dead who's American Beauty rivals this as the best of the bunch.
5-0 out of 5 stars McGuinn's radical masterpiece...
About 30 years ago BYRDMASTER Roger McGuinn got sick of David Crosby's antics and kicked him out of--next to the Beach Boys--America's most successful band.THE NOTORIOUS BYRD BROTHERS is arguably(orginal formation)The Byrds most accomplished studio album and matched-well against Brian Wilson's triumphant GOOD VIBRATIONS(which was to be coda of only recently completed SMILE. Wilson's nervous breakdown is pop legend in its own right, and his vindication as artist is now indisputable. The irony of THE BYRDS

5-0 out of 5 stars What a GREAT underrated band
I discovered the Mavericks after hearing Raul Malo.I think his best work is with the Mavericks. The band is tight and a great backing for Malo's singing.
4-0 out of 5 stars Just makes you want to get up and dance, even if you are by yourself.
If you are a fan of the Mavericks and want to have that one CD to keep near your CD player or in your car, this is the one to buy!! It covers all of the previous CDs by the old Mavericks.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Mavericks - The Definitive Collection is Superb!
Recently I heard "Blue Moon" on the radio and was taken away to "another land".It was so beautiful.I searched online, found it was the Mavericks that recorded it and immediately ordered the CD.The entire CD has spectacular cuts on it.These hits were originally recorded when I was quite young (the 50's), but they're just as fresh as the latest popular Country music of today.Foot stompin', dream away, smooth, an excellent variety in this collection.I can't get enough of it. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Absolute Perfection
I cannot imagine how these two could surpass the beauty of this effort. Proof that true craftsmanship does not need big arrangements. You will not notice the sparse instrumentation while you are listening, and maybe they could carry the songs vocally without any instruments at all.As for the songs your heart will be broken and mended again by the end.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Stuff
Really good , especially Elvis Presley Blues. Could listen to it over & over. What a voice.

4-0 out of 5 stars Understated so the power of purity can reach us.
This CD by Gillian Welch and David Rawlings is a wonderful paradox. At time sounding country, at times blues, and at others sounding folk. The delivery is often understated, underproduced so that the spare purity and the eloquent sincerity of voice, lyric, and instrumentation blaze more brightly.

Editorial Review

A new album from Hank Williams III is always a revelation: first, because it came out at all (his relationship with his label is as stormy as the marriage of his legendary grandparents); and second, because of its content and execution. So it's something of a miracle to see a 2-CD set of some of III's most hardcore Hellbilly (as opposed to the relentless screaming of his Assjack), especially as a number of the songs had been scheduled to appear on his unreleased 2003 album

5-0 out of 5 stars This whisky is old, smooth and tastes damned good........
This is the first review I have written for Amazon, and was compelled to do so, because this is without a doubt, my favourite album of the year!!
5-0 out of 5 stars Straight to Hell Alright
Plain and simple.... This is the new generation of Rebel Outlaw Country music. If you don't like it, then either quit listening to outlaw country or build a time machine and go hang out with his grand daddy. Every song on this album is gold, especially when driving across the southwest like Arizona. The End. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The best whether you like country or crossover
These are all great emotional, introspective songs. I cannot recommend this album enough. Mary has a twang but somehow I can't imagine these songs without it. Only one song doesn't feel like it was written by a person with values sympathetic to mine. Mercy Now, Wheel Inside a Wheel (about Mardi Gras from a Cajun perspective) and I Drink will be classics.

5-0 out of 5 stars Música para tu espíritu
Rodrigo(Valencia-SPAIN)

5-0 out of 5 stars great discovery
I was listening to XM Cross Country. A song really caught my ear. I looked to see who was singing. I even wrote down the name when I stopped, so I would be sure to remember. I just bought Mary's album and every song is great. She has emotion and feeling in every word. She has a new fan. ... Read more
