Editorial Review

With the musical maturity of this sophomore release, Ollabelle extend their accomplishment of forging a singular style bridging folk and art songs from the talents of five singer-songwriters. While Amy Helm, daughter of the Band's Levon, boasts the highest-profile lineage, the two-woman, three-man band has the balance of a democratic collective, combining deep roots with soaring, sophisticated harmonies. "Troubles of the World," an elegiac reading of the traditional "Riverside," the call-and-response of "Gone Today," and the closing "Last Lullaby" reflect the spiritual underpinnings of the quintet's signature sound, but the stylistic range extends from the Caribbean lilt of the opening "See Line Woman" and the stately country waltz of "Heaven's Pearls" to the delta blues of "Fall Back" and the Celtic balladry of "Dream the Fall." Except for the lovesick "Blue Northern Lights" and the bittersweet delicacy of "Everything Is Broken," it's difficult to distinguish the band's arrangements of traditional material from the original songwriting that dominates. Larry Campbell, formerly of Bob Dylan's band, provides superb production and multi-instrumental support. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars It took long to release, but it was worth the wait
I discoved this eclectic band in '04 with their first CD and deeply enjoyed it.I also caught a live show in Detroit and was very pleased to find that they are not just a result of studio magic (though the production only both CD's is to be complimented).
5-0 out of 5 stars Ollabelle and their Harmonies
I just discovered this group on XM Radio's The Bob Edwards Show. Does anyone hear a resemblance to Crosby, Stills and Nash with respect to some of the harmonies? Initially I struggled to figure out what I was reminded of in Ollabelle's style. The formal review posted on Amazon gave me the answer: Delaney and Bonnie. I have a vinyl recording of Motel Shots with Delaney and Bonnie along with Leon Russell that makes me want to compare the two bands. This is a Two Thumbs Up album that I will purchase.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tremendous Sophomore Release!!!!
Ollabelle has done it again. I truly enjoyed their first record because of its honesty and respect for the past but this record takes the band to a whole different level. Although very eclectic in nature, this quality works for, and not against the record as a whole. So many well crafted tunes on this one. Everything from the subtle anti-war protest sentiments of "Riverside" and "Dream the Fall" to the heartbroken "Blue Northern Lights and Northern Star" resonate with a beauty and restraint that is rare in modern record making. I can't recommend this one enough. Very happy that real music is still alive. ... Read more

As a superstar who's revered by both the young country audience and traditionalists, Alan Jackson is at his finest when he's steers clear of trifles like "Chattahoochie" and takes those youngerfans to school. Here he does just that by paying respects toHank ("Midnight in Montgomery"), swearing allegiance to George Jones ("Don't Rock the Jukebox"), and calling out all those newcomers who've decided it's time to get twangy now that country's hot ("Gone Country"). All of it pales next to "Here in the Real World," however, as perfect a honky-tonk weeper as mainstream Nashville has produced in 30 years. Read more

Editorial Review

In the late 1950s and the '60s, country music was essentially a singles medium. This album, first released in 1967 and reissued on compact disc in 1988, collects Patsy Cline's biggest hits--all of them from the country singles market--including "Walkin' After Midnight," "Sweet Dreams (Of You)," "Crazy," and "I Fall to Pieces." Producer Owen Bradley surrounds Cline's full-throated, emotionally charged vocals with lush, sophisticated arrangements that set the standard for Nashville's "countrypolitan" sound. Before Shania Twain found a new (though not necessarily improved) way to combine country and pop in the 1990s, this was the top-selling country album of all time by a female artist. Read more

A wonderfully emotive Cd for those of us who were youngsters in the fifties and sixties - how many of us have danced to Patsy's music with our sweethearts?

A lot of her big hits, I enjoyed having so many on the same CD

5-0 out of 5 stars Oh that Voice!
If there is one musical genere I dislike, its Country. Give me some Bluegrass, yet Country music just doesnt reach me. But then there is Patsy Cline, whos voice alone is absolutly breath-taking. Even though these tracks were mostly recorded in the 1960s,I still think that she is one of the best Country singers of all time. Some of the material is a bit dated, as evidence with a little doo-wop thrown in, yet these are a great collection of songs. I encourage people to see to put down thier Britney Spears, Christine Agularia, and Jo-LO CD's, and try on some Patsy Cline for a real amazing voice. No, this isnt going to want to make you groove, but its a voice that has to be heard. This one is a true classic in any music genere. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Soulful and Poetic the next Bob Dylan?
My first opportunity to listen to Josh Ritter came on the radio. When I heard his first song it took me a while to catch onto his style. It didn't take long before I was addicted.I soon bought his cd and was completley impressed.Josh is a trully outstanding musician that is well beyond his years. His lyrics are deep almost to deep.I had a friend walk in when I was playing the cd and their first thought was "I haven't heard this Dylan song."To compare maybe a little premature.Although I feel we need more music like this.I will be sharing these great songs with many of my friends.

5-0 out of 5 stars The next Bob Dylan..but better?
This is, by far, one of the best albums I've bought recently.Oddly enough, it's not because it's perfect. The imperfections on this album make it what it is.
5-0 out of 5 stars America's great new songwriter/singer
OK, perhap's he's not that new, but new enough. I just discovered him this past weekend as he gave a free mini-concert at a record store, and then I went to his concert at night in Boise, Idaho. Wow! Amazing stuff.

Jeff Tweedy might carry the name recognition, but the rest of his band-on-the-side carries the mail on the fourth release from this Midwest all-star group. Though the Wilco leader teams with the Jayhawks' Gary Louris on a pair of nimble pop songs--the elegantly strummed "Listen Joe" and Kinks cover "Strangers"--it's Louris who's clearly at the head of the class with self-assured vocals ("Another Fine Day," "Think About Yourself"), lush harmonies ("Long Time Ago") and those unmistakable guitar leads ("Frying Pan Eyes"). Soul Asylum guitarist Dan Murphy's obligatory rocker "Hurricane" is a high point, as is the album's lead track "You Make It Easy," which has Kraig Johnson warbling over a thumping piano lead and chunky fuzz guitar. But most welcome among the 15 songs are two contributions from Louris's fellow Jayhawk Marc Perlman: the refreshing "Corvette" and "Cure for This," a '60s-speckled pop song sung by Muni Loco, the wife of producer Paco Loco and the first female to grace a recording by Golden Smog. 1-0 out of 5 stars This one goes to the used CD store...
I had such high hopes for this one! However, after about a dozen tries, I cannot stand this music. It is uninteresting and possibly contains the worst songwriting and lyrics I have heard in years.Or maybe it's the schmultzy music that is so unbelievably weak.Whatever it is, it has no magic, no risk, no intelligence.

3-0 out of 5 stars Somewhat disappointed
Maybe a few more listens will help, but this album reminds me in a lot of ways of Bubble Gum music from the late 60's.Way too cute. After eight years I expected a lot more.

5-0 out of 5 stars Subjectively speaking, a great disk. Period.
Okay, these user reviews are plagued by a high degree of subjectivity, though what is objective about music? Plainly speaking, after listening to AFD for four weeks now, I believe this disc is quite exceptional both in its variety, the quality of songwriting, and overall production. This was my first exposure to Golden Smog, but since I have explored (that is, purchased) "Weird Tales." I just don't have the same feeling toward that disc as I do for AFD. For the record, I am not overly enamored with Wilco's recorded output, and had no previous exposure to the Jayhawks. Another Fine Day, then, needs no antecedents to make a salient musical impression. I am not given to hyperbole, but can best sum up my feeling about AFD this way: I have already downloaded it in its entirety from ITMS, but am now ordering two physical discs from Amazon--one for my 24-year old son, and one just for posterity. ... Like Nickel Creek and the Duhks (and Alison Krauss and Union Station before them), Crooked Still employ bluegrass elements as a springboard for an eclectic, expansive dynamic. Behind the sweetly ethereal and occasionally jazzy vocals of Aoife O' Donovan, the interplay of Gregory Liszt's banjo, Rushad Eggleston's cello (both bowed and flatpicked), and Corey DiMario's double bass gives the young New England band a sound that is closer to chamber-grass than hoedown. Though none of the material on this label debut is original, the transformations typically are, with the murder balladry of "Little Sadie" given a surprisingly sprightly reading, Bob Dylan's early "Oxford Town" taken at double-time speed, and Robert Johnson's "Come On in My Kitchen" sounding more meditative than bluesy. The band and veteran producer Lee Townsend enlist a number of guests for harmony and instrumental support, but it's plain that the drummerless quartet has the talent and musical vision to deliver on this album's considerable promise. 5-0 out of 5 stars The coolest music I've heard in a long time
I discovered the latest Crooked Still album by pure chance in Charleston SC... This is great music and O'Donovan's voice gives chills.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good sophmore effort
If you're checking out the reviews for Crooked Still you either already know what a great outfit these folks are or maybe you're poking around based on word-of-mouth.Regardless, they ably follow-up their amazing debut album (Hop High) with another collection of bluegrassy traditional songs and cover tunes on Shaken By a Low Sound.Again, the Still bring it to effect.Standout tracks include an upbeat version of the Dylan gem Oxford Town which comfortably segues into the classic Cumberland Gap, Ain't No Grave which gets the train song treatment, and an airy take on Wind and Rain. The album really is a good all-around listen; however, (and here are my reservations) it lacks a certain quality that made their debut such a fabulous disc; first, gone is the prominent spacey, hypnotic feel that made it sound that something heavy was going down in the studio that day.Additionally, maybe it's the production/arrangements (Robert Johnson's Come On In My Kitchen) or song choice (didn't the great Boston folkie Kris Delmhorst just record a cover of Ain't No Grave?), but it doesn't quite hold the attention as well as Hop High either.I was also hoping for a batch of original songs as well, but I recognize, in obviousness, that this was not the intent here.Like I said, it really is a nice little disc in spite of these trifling issues, and it would be a shame if you overlooked Shaken By a Low Sound for them as Crooked Still are diamonds in the rough of a too often vapid music scene.Looking forward to seeing 'em on tour!

Editorial Review

A poll-winning fiddler since her teens, Alison Krauss was an established bluegrass star when her label persuaded her to step out from her usual projects with Union Station, her crack band, and sanction this compilation of various band and solo guest performances. The ploy worked, yielding a wonderful, odds-beating crossover hit with Krauss's cover of "Baby, Now That I've Found You," a carousing late-'60s pop chant transformed into a delicate, vulnerable declaration of love. Focusing on Krauss's lovely, yearning soprano, the track elevated the musician above her resolutely democratic role in her quintet, catapulting Krauss to the biggest bluegrass success story in over 30 years. Krauss has stayed true to her bluegrass roots, as well as to Union Station, but this cross-section of contemporary bluegrass songs, joyous gospel, and canny rock covers testifies to the young artist's luminous appeal. 5-0 out of 5 stars A City Boy Gone Country
I must admit this CD was in my shopping cart for quite a while given its genre.I finally make the plunge when I needed it for free shipping and the first time I played it, I couldn't believe the beautiful purity and fullness of her voice.
2-0 out of 5 stars Overrated
I've heard all the hype about Alison Krauss and her musical influence on artists such as Nickel Creek.I wanted to see what I was missing out on given Alison's reputation and tried this as my introduction to her music. This highly rated CD was a major disappointment to me.She sounds like a little kid singing and all but a couple of songs sound the same.A little too country style for my taste.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfection
I admit, I'm not a huge country fan or bluegrass fan...but, Her voice! It's so clear and perfect.I get chills each time I listen Alison Krauss.A few of my favorites on the album are "Baby, Now That I've Found You", "Sleep On", "In The Palm of Your Hand", and of course "When You Say Nothing At All."Yes, I'm a casual fan, but there is absolutely nothing casual about her voice...its pure perfection! ... I purchased all 3 volumes of this set, and vol 2 & 3 are much better. Vol 1 is 80% instrumental, I prefer more vocal.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Circle stays unbroken
With this rerelease a new generation can relearn the tradition of pure country that has influncenced not only nashville purists but rock as well. Much as John Hammond preserved blues traditions, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band has recorded tradional songs with tradional artists that would have been forgotten to this generation raised on Nashville star and American Idol. The importance of this music can be seen in the resurgence of traditonal country music and and its impact on rock and roll in the movie "Walk the Line" where the two are virtually inseparable in Sam Phillips Memphis and the million dollar quartet. This Album is a must for anyone interested in the history of country, rock or pop music.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great but lacks a bit of the magic of the original vinyl
This is great American music and I fully agree with all the previous rave reviews that so eloquently praise this performance. I am giving it 4 stars only because the 30th anniversary discs digital transfer though good was not all I had hoped it would be. If you have ever heard this disc on vinyl you would know what I am nitpicking about. I wish the producers had given this disc all the attention it so justly deserves. Hybrid SACD stereo would have been ideal, but even standard CDs can reproduce a bit more of the magic once heard on the original vinyl. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Though Kris Kristofferson has long seemed ageless, the approach of his 70th birthday plainly has the songwriter looking back, taking stock and coming to terms with his legacy and his mortality. The result is his most consistently compelling release in decades, as well as his most stripped-to-the-bone intimate. The spare production by bassist Don Was captures Kristofferson in all his rough-edged, plain-spoken, and big-hearted glory, with occasional support from guitarist (and longtime Kristofferson compatriot) Stephen Bruton and drummer Jim Keltner putting the focus on songs that combine the poetic grace of Kristofferson's early classics with a conviction that has grown stronger with the passing years. "Wild Americans" offers a roll call of outspoken heroes--from American Indian activist John Trudell to country maverick Steve Earle--while "In the News" lambastes the very concept of a holy war. Yet it's the spiritual side of Kristofferson that really touches the soul, from a father's wonder at the "Holy Creation" of his children's birth to the bittersweet benediction of "Thank You for a Life." With the title cut, "The Last Thing to Go," "The Show Goes On," and "Final Attraction," he takes a look back at the life of a troubadour and decides that, for all the bumps, this road has been one of incomparable rewards. The listener shares the riches. Read more

Anything Mr. Kristofferson does recording wise is always super. He needs to keep those CDs coming out.

5-0 out of 5 stars Glad He's Back
It's really good to see Kris has slowed down enough to write again.Usually when they start releasing greatest hits albums and tribute albums ("The Pilgrim"), the singer is over the hill, but he has proven it wrong this time (so has Merle Haggard and, of course, Dylan).Hope he keeps writing and singing forever. By the way, one of his best songs ever, in my opinion, was on the first "Highwaymen" album. It's called "Here Comes That Rainbow Again", inspired from a scene in "The Grapes of Wrath".Check it out. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Probably the Weakest of Johnny Cash's 5 Albums from American Recordings
UNCHAINED is Johnny Cash's second album of 5 albums of fresh recording in a row, for Rick Rubin's American label. This one does not have an official number, II, in the CD title, but III, IV, and V do. UNCHAINED came out in 1996, a decade ago. It is fourteen songs in 43 minutes.

This CD is great. It has up-beat songs and easly listening. If you like Jack Johnson or the Red Hot Chili Peppers, you should definetly buy this CD! Dark Blue is one of the best songs. Their new tour with The Academy Is... will be great. I cant wait to go to one of their shows!

I love SoCo, so I was pretty hyped to hear what Andrew McMahon's side project, Jack's Mannequin, would sound like. After previewing some songs online, and not being able to get them out of my head, I immediately went out and bought the CD. It was more than worth it! Over 6 months later I still find myself putting the CD on repeat and listening to it again and again and again. All of the songs are catchy, well crafted, and incredible lyrically. It is hard to pick out a favorite song because every single one is great. I go through different phases of which song is my favorite (currently it would have to be "Dark Blue" and "Bruised.")

I've had this CD for a couple of years now, but had to buy it in Australia.Great to see that he's getting some international recognition.I saw him perform in Brisbane, and he is such a genuine and humble performer. It helps if you know a little about Oz culture and history, but he's easy to listen to, and enjoyable even if you don't.

True Blue represents what I think as quintesentially Australian songs. But it's also universal in its appeal. You hear the sounds of protest in songs like Rip Rip Wood Chip and the sounds of folk in Mallee Boy.If anyone has visited Australia, this album will always bring you back there.

Moving to Los Angeles after an unproductive stint in Nashville, Kentucky-born Dwight Yoakam made a name for himself by reviving the more robust honky-tonk traditions of the Bakersfield Sound--a bold contrast with Music City's assembly-line approach. In 1984, his independently released six-song EP, Read more

Editorial Review

Though the late Waylon Jennings has had numerous greatest-hits compilations, this four-disc box that encompasses almost half a century of music making is his first comprehensive, career-spanning anthology. While the 1970s and early '80s were plainly Jennings's commercial and creative heyday--when the Outlaw movement christened by his recording of "Ladies Love Outlaws" was in full swagger--highlights here extend from his 1958 revival of the Cajun classic "Jolie Blon" (produced by Jennings's mentor Buddy Holly) through his swan-song recordings with Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, and Kris Kristofferson as the Highwaymen. The trademark lope of Jennings's music and his penchant for self-mythologizing material give him a strong signature sound, but the anthology shows just how much musical territory he covered--from his folkish reading of Gordon Lightfoot's "(That's What You Get) For Lovin' Me" and his bluesy transformation of Little Richard's "Lucille" through his dips into the songbooks of Neil Young ("Are You Ready for the Country"), Jimmy Webb ("MacArthur Park"), and Los Lobos ("Will the Wolf Survive?"). The 140-page booklet provides thorough credits and annotation, as well as an abundance of photos of Waylon with friends, fellow musicians, and every famous person he ever met (from Muhammad Ali to Metallica's James Hetfield). Where Is The Fifth CD ? It Is Missing A Handfull Of Songs That Were Great
5-0 out of 5 stars JUST BUY IT!
Don't think twice, because I've noticed that these box-sets have a tendency to go out of print alot quicker than albums.Everytime I have thought twice about buying an awesome collection like this I came back a week later to purchase it and it was gone, never to be seen again! Yes it's a little more money, but you have to consider all of the great music you are getting on 4 discs! Plus it comes with nice packaging and an awesome book with never-before-seen photos of Waylon throughout the years.I didn't think twice on this one, I got it, and it's mine forever! It is also one of the best box-sets that I own, and I own about 40.It's well worth this price so don't hesitate-order now!!!!!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Here's a 4-CD set that's worthy of its subject
Going toe-to-toe with the monolithic, authoritative import box sets on the Bear Family label, Sony-BMG has finally given American country fans a comprehensive, thoroughly satisfying -- and affordable! -- overview of Waylon Jennings' entire career. From his early years singing in bars in the Southwest through his entry into (and swift departure from) the Nashville establishment, on into his "outlaw" golden years, this captures Waylon at his best.

5-0 out of 5 stars I Love This CD
I absolutely loved this CD from Garth Brooks. Almost every song of his that I like is on this CD, and I can honestly listen to the whole CD and like all of the songs on it. This CD is a perfect mix of his classic songs, and I would definitly recommend this CD to anyone who is a Garth Brooks fan.

5-0 out of 5 stars a must-own
Anyone who likes Garth Brooks will love this album. It contains many of his best songs, including "The Dance," "The River," "Unanswered Prayers," "Callin' Baton Rogue," "Standing Outside the Fire," and "Friends in Low Places." It is a perfect showcase for his music, and I thoroughly enjoy listening to it whenever I do. Even if you are not a fan, you will still enjoy it due to the perfection of song selection. If you can find it anywhere, get it. You will not regret it.

5-0 out of 5 stars The King Of Music!
Garth Brooks is the greatest recording artist in music history. While some claim he never recaptured the magic of his first five albums, I disagree, "Sevens" was one of the best country albums of all time (released in 1997), and "Fresh Horses" was also pretty neat. (Tracks from these albums aren't included here).

Dick Dale's surf-guitar provided the memorable title theme("Misirlou"), for Quentin Tarantino's 1994 smash, and although thatsound runs throughout the soundtrack (along with bits and pieces of dialog fromthe movie), this is a pretty eclectic bunch of really terrific songs.I don'tknow how it all manages to hang together, but it does (you might say the samefor the interwoven stories in the movie).Where else are you going to findChuck Berry, Maria McKee, Al Green, The Statler Brothers, Kool & the Gang, UrgeOverkill (singing a Neil Diamond ballad!), Ricky Nelson, Dusty Springfield, andthe Tornadoes (among others) one album? McKee's beautiful "If Love is a RedDress (Hang Me in Rags)" is a standout, partly because it's less familiar. One of the few soundtracks of the '90s that went into the CD player and stayedthere for weeks and months thereafter. Great album, but what is the song at the end credits? I love that song!

5-0 out of 5 stars Unmistakeably Tarantino
No movie maker in Hollywood can be more relied on to put together a top quality soundtrack than Quentin Tarantino. Perhaps it is the fact that he hand picks his own songs rather than handing it over to someone in the music world to write a score, that makes them such a powerful part of his films.

Carrie Rodriguez is well known to me because of three excellent CD's she made with her collaborator and mentor, Chip Taylor, songwriter, professional gambler, and uncle of Angelina Jolie. The style of the two was mostly down-home folk and country.Carrie's Texas fiddle and twangy voice fit the music.

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic at its best
Just purchased this album yesturday and was very excited to find out how perfect it was.My wife is not yet a fan of Sufjan's, so I am going solo to his only appearance in LA in October to see him, but the wife actually says that she kinda digs this album. So its definetly Sufjan but its more acoustic and more banjo than his newer stuff which is great.Check it out if you can find it until its re-released...

5-0 out of 5 stars Like Iron and Wine, but more spiritual
From the banjo on the first song to the lyrics "Son of Man! Son of God!", Sufjan pulls together an album worth remembering.Highlights include: All The Trees..., To Be Alone With You, Abraham, We Won't Need Legs to Stand, and Seven Swans. At times poetic, at times prophetic, and at times just lush and beautiful, Seven Swans will grow on you more and more with every listen. With its gorgeous overt Christian lyrics and folksy songs, Sufjan has proven that he is an upcoming singer/songwriter that means business. In an industry flooded with such perverse imagery, Sufjan gives us the word of God and the observations of an imperfect man who recognizes God's perfect power.Whatever the subject, Sufjan can tackle it head on without compromising who he is.For fans of Iron and Wine, this CD is a must have.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
This was my intro to Sufjan Stevens, and it was a wonderful place to start.I was at first a little turned off by the Christianity themes, references, etc., but I couldn't deny that I loved the music (and oddly enough, The Transfiguration, perhaps the most blantantly Christian and certainly most Biblical, is my favorite song).Perhaps not as... impressive as Illiniose, but if you enjoyed any of his other albums, you should certainly get this one, too, or if you're just checking it out, at least listen to the samples so you know what you're getting into, or rather, just get it.You'll be pleased with this purchase. ... Less successful when it's sentimental (Waylon Jennings' "My Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys") than when it's wry (Willie Nelson's myth-puncturing "Me and Paul"), this cash-in compilation of previously released cuts was just in time to grab the first platinum record ever awarded a country album. 5-0 out of 5 stars Don't forget Tompall
I agree, this is one of the best albums ever.I grew up listening to it, and bought the cd as soon as it was released (my old LP is still played as well.)The only thing I would add is that don't forget Tompall. He was one of the best, even though this album wasn't his best effort.I would suggest checking out the newly re-released album "Charley" which is one of the two albums on "My Nortorious Youth".If you love the outlaws you will love this album.BTW, anyone know how tompall is doing these days?
