Editorial Review

It's telling that Richard Marx broke into the music business singing backup vocals for Lionel Richie and writing songs with Kenny Rogers and Chicago, for he kept to the straightforward, middle-of-the-road approach of those acts once he became a recording artist in his own right--not that there's anything wrong with that. A dependable hitmaker throughout the late '80s and early '90s, Marx scored with rockers ("Don't Mean Nothing," "Should've Known Better"), and ballads ("Right Here Waiting," "Endless Summer Nights") alike. 5-0 out of 5 stars So unbelievably talented and underrated :-l
Richard Marx is fantastic. His voice is beyond description. He is so underrated when he shouldn't be.His music is stunning (and he pretty much writes it all) and that combined with his voice is a fantastic combination.
4-0 out of 5 stars solid musician, great lyrics, laid back music
The only reason I purchased this CD in the first place was so I could have a copy of Hazard that I could learn the music from.It is a song that my band is going to be playing soon.I didn't expect to be so surprised by the quality of the other songs as well.
5-0 out of 5 stars Bought it just for Keep Coming Back
I have always liked Richard Marx since I was in Junior High & High School and we danced to his songs at dances. But Keep coming Back is the song that holds a special place in my heart. Every party I went to my sophmore year someone would pop in a tape of mixes and this song was on it at most of them. Well after almost a year of flirting he finally asked me to dance and it was to this song and then he kissed me. Although we were only together for 4 months & I don't know where he is now, I always think of him when I hear this. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Watch the movie...then listen to the music!
I remember when the movie premeired in the 70's with Kris and Barbra. The soundtrack has some great cuts on it but, to get the most of of your listening pleasure, I reccomend watching the movie first. Otherwise some of the cuts seem out of place in this complilation of songs. I've ordered the movie but it hasn't been released yet. I can't wait to see it again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great album title by Barbra Streisand!!!
This album by Barbra Streisand, which is a companion title to the movie of the same name from 1976, is one of her best selling titles ever. It contains 11 songs, 6 of which contain Barbra's beautiful singing voice (including the timeless "Evergreen"), 3 of them have Kris Kristofferson's vocals, and 2 have Barbra and Kris singing together. This was and still is a great movie and this album was a hot seller when it was first released in late '76 and was at the top of the charts for quite a long time. The music on this album is wonderful. I mainly prefer Barbra's songs on this title more than Kris' songs. His material on this was okay; his performance was not too bad in the movie. I am not very familiar with any of Kris' other material that he did during his singing career before or after doing the movie. Anyway, I love this album (and the movie, too). I am looking forward to getting the movie on DVD sometime soon. I don't quite understand why the movie wasn't available on DVD before, but Barbra's fans will be looking forward to getting it soon. I have this album on LP (3 copies, believe it or not) and on CD. No Barbra Streisand music collection is complete without this title. Get it while you can!!! Now, I am going to give a brief summary of each of the eleven songs on this album:

I have become a fan of The Dixie Chicks and this new CD did not disappoint. I would have liked it to have more songs, but the ones that were on it were worth the price of the CD.

Editorial Review

When Brad Paisley sings, as he does on the lead single "Celebrity," "No matter what you do, people think you're cool just 'cuz you're on TV," he ratifies his status as a formidable voice in modern yet accessible and traditional country music. "That's Love" and "Is It Raining at Your House" offer romance freed of hazy metaphor or greeting-card slogans. There's a miniature morality play, "The Cigar Song," and the obligatory closing gospel chestnut ("Farther Along"). The guest shots--by contemporary stars Alison Krauss and Vince Gill, and veterans Bill Anderson, George Jones, and Little Jimmy Dickens--are pleasant but hardly necessary, since Paisley's good musical sense abounds. He also revives a long-vanished tradition: the featured sideman. As Chet Atkins once played for the Carter Sisters and Don Rich picked behind Buck Owens, Paisley spotlights the amazing guitarist, Merle Haggard alumnus Redd Volkaert, letting him loose on "Spaghetti Western Swing." Paisley himself flies free on the extended country-jazz jam in the middle of "Make a Mistake with Me." With wit, heart, and unyielding devotion to the earthy, Paisley follows his 2001 gem, Read more

Editorial Review

No doubt, these suburban cowboys play country music for Friday-afternoon drive times and Saturday nights at the mall, not the honky-tonk, the ranch, or the porch. With harmonies as squeaky-clean as their faces, Rascal Flatts relish the pop and lite-groove direction that the genre has taken at the turn of the century. In fact, they seem to take pride in their distance from hard-core country roots. To their credit, this trio of earnest young men sounds as if they are truly enjoying themselves as they run through their bouncy, bubbly love songs. And at least these boys don't pay lip service to keeping country traditions alive in 2000. Heck, they even find the fact that their label has "the power of Disney" behind it "really exciting." If you're looking for music with instantly digestible pop melodies, tight harmonies, and very little grit, Rascal Flatts will delight you and they will most likely delight their Disney-backed label, who's obviously taken aim squarely at the teenage market. Goes down as easy as a milkshake--a nonfat milkshake. Read more

Editorial Review

As the title of Gary Allan's sixth album suggests, there's no change of pace or lightening up on his darkest collection to date (and first since his wife's suicide). Love goes bad on the bittersweet "Best I Ever Had," gets brutal on "I Just Got Back from Hell," and turns positively lethal on "He Can't Quit Her." The closest Allan comes to an affirmative sentiment is the schmaltzy "Life Ain't Always Beautiful," though an extended guitar solo brings the rock balladry of "Putting My Misery on Display" to a soul-stirring finale. "Nickajack Cave" evokes the mythic redemption of Johnny Cash, but there's no redemption for Allan here. He sounds like he's trying so hard to convey life's hard lessons that the comparative understatement of "Puttin' Memories Away" comes as a relief. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Tough All Over - Gary Allan
Allan's latest outing is a neo-traditional masterpiece. There isn't a throwaway track on the entire album.Raw and powerful, Allan's songwriting and presentation really showcase the pain of loss but also the beauty of having loved.Allan is always a treat to listen to, especially with his unique, gritty vocals and the production of the music. The power of the raunchy yet traditional guitar and drum work invoke some of the greatest traditionalist country of the last decade which include Allan, Danni Leigh and the Bastard Sons of Johnny Cash.As exhibited on "Tough Little Boys" and "Smoke Rings in the Dark", he can really deliver an emotional ballad, and this album doles it out in spades, but he can also really crank it on songs like "Ring" and the amazing and honest "Nickajack Cave".This makes it my pick for the best male country album of 2006.

5-0 out of 5 stars ABSOLUTLY THE BEST!
I am biased - I love Gary Allan. I have every CD - I love every song...but this one...it speaks volumes about the power of music. He could have dealt with his pain in a private way or he could have done this. Putting his misery on display is the only way a musician, an artist, a writer can deal with life. This man is the most amazing musician, honest, raw and true to his own blood. He follows his heart, he stays true to himself and while he may not be CMA Entertainer of the Year or even Male Vocalist of the Year - he is by far the most talented and most unique country artist out there. The true irony of life would be if this intense personal album brings him the overdue credit that he deserves. Perhaps the personal tragedy behind the album will bring a sense of peace to other people dealing with the same inner pain as Gary's wife and they will feel that they are not alone. BTW - a chapter in my book is titled "Life Ain't Always Beautiful"...but I swear Gary Allan has it right, life is a freaking beautiful ride!

4-0 out of 5 stars Gary Allen Scores Big with Darkness
Gary Allen's latest offering "Tough All Over" may be a very dark album overall, but Gary and coproducer Mark Wright do a fabulous job of exploring Gary's pain. Althoughthe album is rather "dark", Gary's voice cuts through with a "true-to-life" hurt. He's literally "been there, done that", especially with the three songs he co-wrote: "I Just Got Back From Hell", "Puttin' Memories Away" and the album's closer "Puttin' My Misery On Display". The Southern California native doesn't need to prove where he's been lately. You can hear it in every song. Tasty lead guitar licks from studio ace Brent Rowan and a sparingly used string section, bring this album home in great style. Two of Nashville's best backup singers: John Wesley Ryles and Wes Hightower compliment Gary's sometimes edgy voice with style. The first hit of the album "Best I Ever Had" will remain one of Country's most haunting ballads, especially after seeing the video. This is a healing album for Gary, who last year experienced the tragedy of losing his loving wife. Gary took very little time off to let the hurt fester, instead choosing to stay on the road and work through his pain. He's an awesome concert performer as well. A great piece of work from a great singer and songwriter. I see this album eventually going Platinum, and deservedly so. ... Read more

One of the signature hits of the late Waylon Jennings was "Are You Sure Hank Done It This Way?" Well, here's Hank done Waylon's way, in previously unreleased recordings from 1985, when Jennings was in fine voice for what was obviously a labor of love. Whatever the reason that this project was shelved for two decades has nothing to do with the quality of the performances. There's a bit more fiddle and steel guitar than was common for Jennings, but many of the arrangements have a stripped-down musical intimacy, as a mournful harmonica serenades its way through "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry," while "Mansion on the Hill" shows Jennings at his most tender. Among the other highlights, Jennings applies his trademark lope to "Hey Good Lookin'" and a goodtime growl to "Honky Tonkin'."A five-and-a-half-minute, spoken-word bonus track finds Jennings reminiscing about his formative musical experiences and the seminal influence of Hank Williams. 1-0 out of 5 stars Waylon Jennings Sings Hank Williams
This was a great disappointment. Waylon must have been in the bathroom and the muscians in the lounge when this recording was made! I love Waylon Jennings but the vocals are so distorted and the music so loud that it was very hard to tell who was singing. I'm sure if the recording had of been better quality I would have loved this.

5-0 out of 5 stars The merging of two distinguished talents
Hank Williams has long been one of my favorite songwriters; however--and I'm not ashamed to admit it--I cannot listen to his recordings; the "nasal" style of singing has never been a favorite of mine. You know what kind of singing I like?Waylon's.Waylon Jennings was one of the best vocalists country music ever had--along with Paycheck, Jones, Twitty, and several others--and he was also a great stylist...he single-handedly invented a subgenre of country music that is imitated even today. That voice, and that style, put to Hank Williams's lyrics...it's a musical masterpiece.

I was extremely excited about this set when it was rumored to be released, and then I was annoyed at the format. We know that the two albums here fit on one disc, so why separate them and make us pay for 3 discs instead of 2?This kept me from buying it straightaway (coupled with the fact that if you have the two-fer disc already, you have the bulk & best of this set already).I, of course, broke down and bought it like any true fan and I was not disappointed in the slightest.Although I have most of these songs already, these mixes are superb -- better than perfect almost -- it's easily the best-sounding Gram Parsons related reissue of the CD era & some of the alternate takes are amazingly good, if in tentative arrangements -- "Hickory Wind", "She", "Love Hurts" & "Ooh Las Vegas" all rival the master takes & "Return of the Grevious Angel #1" is a revelation if for no other reason than to hear another cut of this fantastic song (albeit with Gram flubbing the words a bit and EmmyLou not really opening up on the harmony part). The format is questionable and as one reviewer mentioned, since the albums are kept separated, it would've been nice to marry the SLEEPLESS NIGHTS tracks back up with the Grevious Angel album instead of tacking them on at the end.Similarly, the interviews and radio tracks (while pleasing) are simply fluff: why do we need an instrumental (karaoke) version of a Gram Parsons song?I would like to have seen the two records on one CD, the outtakes on another and all the radio stuff on a third, abbreviated "Bonus Disc" or something.Ultimately this really means nothing, though, since the music in this package is all fantastically performed & remastered & the price tag is reasonable. We can only hope for the same treatment of the Flying Burrito Brothers' first two records & eliminate the SLEEPLESS NIGHTS album altogether, get "Bonie Moronie" on CD and purge the vaults, there's no reason to hold back at this point.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Complete Reprise Sessions - Gram Parson
This was Gram Parsons just as I remembered him.His wonderful voice, command of a song and Emmy Lou Harris harmonies. It had been many years, but when I saw the compilation was available, I couldn't resist. It is a wonderful step back into the past with an amazing artist. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Less idiosyncratic Lambchop = a superb release
Damaged only has 10 songs, but the result is the first Lambchop release that you actually wish didn't end so soon. Previous CDs have tended to be overlong, bordering on tediousness and somewhat same-sounding. Don't misunderstand me, their back catalog is impressive and Lambchop is a great, unique band, but it can be a chore to listen to many of their full length releases from start to finish. Not this one.
5-0 out of 5 stars Lambchop's latest masterpiece
It may take a few listens, but Lambchop's new album soon reveals it's true worth.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is one of my all-time favorite CDs
If you love bluegrass at its best, this CD is for YOU!
5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT BLUEGRASS!
I just recently got into bluegrass and when I heard this album I now love bluegrass. With songs like foggy mountain breakdown, rocky top and old home place this cd is great!!!! I think that I'm going to go out and buy a banjo today.

4-0 out of 5 stars Introducing myself to music
I had no idea about what type of music bluegrass was before I got this CD.Amazon recommended this CD when I used their search function for bluegrass. I don't have anything to compare it against - so I'm judging it on the music and how "I" like it as a person who hasn't listened to bluegrass before.

Editorial Review

Could Kenny Rogers be a continuous, viable presence on country radio today? Probably not. In 1999, "Buy Me a Rose" made him the oldest artist to reach #1 in the history of the country charts. And to the contemporary tattoo-and-tank-top record buyers, that rates the Gambler a great-grandfather--hey, maybe as old as Hank Williams, ya think? Nonetheless, Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars I can't unlove you is the best song in this album. Check out other Kenny Rogers all time best songs listed in this review
First I just want to say that I'm a big fan of Kenny Rogers so I might be biased but I'll try to be objective.
5-0 out of 5 stars Kenny Rogers - Better than ever
Awesome ! Especially love the song done as a tribute to "Superman".

5-0 out of 5 stars I keep coming back to listen to this CD over and over
When I saw this CD promoted on CMT I wrote it off as a sad, washed-up former star trying to make a comeback (I was also put off by his apparent plastic surgery - what happened to this poor guy?).I decided to check it out anyway - listening to "I Can't Unlove You".I was immediately hooked. This is a wonderful song and Kenny's voice is simply amazing.A few of the songs are somewhat corny (as others have noted) but I found them to be a nice diversion from the usual Top 40 fare focused on sex, drugs or worse. After buying and listening to the entire CD I was very impressed - there are some great songs here that will stick with you long after you've listened to them. This is a great CD and will probably be sadly overlooked by many people because of the "reasons" I stated above. If you are as skeptical as I was give it a listen anyway - you will be pleasantly surprised. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Relaxing & enjoyable for all age groups
I have a 4 mth old baby and both he and I enjoy music. He gets a little uptight during changes so I like to play calming music for us both. This CD offers a wide range of beautiful songs.I can see this one playing in our household for many years.

5-0 out of 5 stars We Luv, Luv, Luv This Album
I play this every night for my daughter (17 months).I often sleep in the same room with her and really look forward to playing this softly. We even keep the CD player on repeat and I still like this.Very soothing and interesting.I highly recommend this for any new parent.

5-0 out of 5 stars buy more than one!
I first purchased this cd several years ago for myself, it was a wonderful way to relax. When my son came along I put it in his room among other "kids" cds.My son, now age 9,(who won't listen to anymore "kid" cds) absolutely loves it.He has been falling asleep to this wonderful cd for the past 3 years.I loved being able to share "the world" with him through music.Recently we remodeled and unfortunately the cd was chipped! He was heartbroken... so here I am purchasing another!Soothing rhythms, soft voices, wonderful instrumentation. A cd that the entire family will love and not get tired of hearing.Even familiar lullabies are updated very nicely. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Total garbage.
This collection shows us,Jack and Jill public, how narrow minded the Grammy voters are today. Not one track on this so-called collection is worthy of a listen or a grammy nod.QUIET.

1-0 out of 5 stars The Verdict Is In . . .
YAAAAAAAAWWWWWWNNN! Don't even bother buying and listening to this CD. Every song on here lacks emotion, meaningful lyrics, and any type of memorable melody. Standards are set so low that any untalented fool can get a record deal, sample to their hearts content, and win a Grammy. Skip this and get Stevie Wonders greatest hits collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars You will love it!
This CD collection is great and if some of your favorite singers are Alicia Keys, Maroon 5, etc then you will find it fascinating and uplifting just like me. This is the best of the best and I highly recommend it. ... Read more
