4-0 out of 5 stars Walt Disney Concert Hall premiere recording
A few thoughts, Disney Concert Hall produces bass powerfully. Ok. It's huge. Not boomy. The sound engineers are top. It's very balanced. It's smooth, deep, and rich. This SACD is a sonic show piece for bass. The only place were it may have been over the top is in the opening of The Miraculous Mandarin, the organ enters as if it's a monster. (If that's the point, they've succeeded.) Though, only the suite, this version of the Mandarin is one of Bartók's versions which is "essentially the first two thirds" of the longer score--it is all of the best parts. The disc as a whole is fun, shimmery (rather than icy), colorful, and liquid. The bass seems to stand out, but I'm not used to powerful bass. All the instruments (strings, horns, percussion) are well voiced throughout. I'm happy with this premiere recording.
5-0 out of 5 stars And Now The Musical World Can Hear!
Esa-Pekka Salonen has become one of the foremost conductors of Stravinsky's masterpiece 'Le Sacre du printemps' and finally there is a recording to match the brilliance he reveals in this score. This astonishingly superb CD is the first recording made in the perfect acoustic of the Walt Disney Hall in Los Angeles, the home of the Los Angeles Philharmonic. While no recording can capture the otherworldly magic of sitting in this hall surrounded with the most perfect sonics ever granted an orchestra by an architect, an acoustician, and the power of the premiere orchestra under the baton of Salonen, this recording comes as close as possible!

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT VERSION
This version of EMI Classics "Bach: Brandenburg Concertos No 1-4" [with the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields under the direction of Neville Marriner] is definitely one of the best in existence. 5-0 out of 5 stars Crystal-clear performances bring out real beauty
When I first heard Lux Aeterna performed, I immediately went out and purchased the premier recording, performed by the Los Angeles Master Chorale under the direction of Paul Salamunovich. I still enjoy that recording, though it is at times dark and quite thick. This new recording by Polyphony and the British Sinfonia moves the work from a rich romantic full choir to a more personal and intimate chamber ensemble. The differences are stunning. While the LAMC's recording melts the harmonies into one rich, thick sound, Polyphony's recording showcases each and every line, part, and harmony. In addition, The chamber sound is well-suited for the madrigali, especially so for Ubi Caritas et Amor.
5-0 out of 5 stars Proving the Durability of a Modern Masterpiece
Morton Lauridsen is a fine composer whose works for chorus and orchestra are among the best being composed today.Since the premiere of his now famous 'Lux aeterna', a repertoire staple with the Los Angeles Master Chorale and Orchestra, this incredibly moving work has enjoyed frequent performances not only in the United States but with European ensembles as well.

Editorial Review

Robert Shaw, despite being a fine choral conductor, was often a pretty boring interpreter--like most choral conductors, in fact. However, there were times that he really put everything together, particularly in his many fine recordings for Telarc, and this is one of the best. Of course, it helps that the music itself is largely pretty subdued, but Shaw directs a performance of exemplary clarity and genuine nobility of utterance. Gorgeous recorded sound too. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Excellent Shaw Recording
It becomes hard after awhile for me to comment on maestro Shaw's work, because I love all of it!Obviously, he definitely does not fall short with this CD.His talent of conducting was matched only by his love of music itself.
4-0 out of 5 stars A steadfast. well-prepared performance.
There are many recordings of the German Requiem of Brahms, and I have seven of them in my library. Robert Shaw'srecording on Telarc is no longer one of them. Amazon states up front that this is the recording people "ultimately" buy.Maybe so, but I wouldn't click on "Buy Now" until I had heard samplings of some other recordings.Yes, Shaw and his musicians are amazing in their dedication to the work. It is a great performance.I have always found it necessary to boost the treble and perhaps reduce the bass to get a clear sound with this recording.
3-0 out of 5 stars Very good
I have owned this recording since it's release and find it a wonderful piece. Robert Shaw has sought to convey a deeper understanding of Brahms thoughts and emotions brought to life in music. There are precious few conductors who take on this work because they know this work is more than a symphony, it requires the study and emersion of the conductor into the mind of Brahms and the trajedy that spawned this work. I am very grateful that Shaw took on the challenge and delivered an excellent interpretation.

Editorial Review

If it is possible to play the piano charismatically, then that is what Lang Lang does. His total identification with each piece gives his playing a warmth, a personal touch, that is unique. His performance of Mozart's K. 330 is ideally classical. The opening movement seems played with the fingers just touching the keys. The big Chopin sonata is given an imposing, dignified reading, and Lang Lang plays the frisky scherzo--the most perky one Chopin ever wrote--with obvious glee. The performance of Schumann's "Kinderszenen" is filled with characterization: dreamy, filled with wonderment ("Curious Story"), wackiness ("Catch me if you can"), and stillness ("Child falling asleep"); Lang Lang manages to avoid affectation throughout. A bonus CD offers Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsody no. 2 in Vladimir Horowitz's arrangement and is dizzying in its virtuosity. This is a must-have; Lang Lang is not being over-hyped. Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Long Long
Chopin' Sonata slow movement is played sooooo slow, I thought there was something wrong with my player. My opinion? Great composers' music should be played more and interpreted less.
5-0 out of 5 stars Gentle, evocative
Pianist Lang Lang "evokes memories of his childhood pianistic explorations", to quote the CD jacket. It's a recital album with all solo piano music, beautifully played. Very nice.

2-0 out of 5 stars Dancing with odd temp
Lang Lang's powerful and fast fingers just do not work for Chopin.Chopin's music is as dedicated as "dancing with soul" for every note.Lang Lang's fingers are just too rude to interpret these subtle notes. For Mazart Concerto, if you have listened to Horowitz, you will be disappointed with Lang Lang's recording too.I don't even want to mention the rest recordings. As I know Lang Lang performs over 120 shows a year.He is talented and successful at his age. Yet he should spend more time on music itself and understand the virtue of difference. Beyond technical fast fingers, expression is all counts at last. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good soundtrack
I own this on vinyl and yes an exellent soundtrack from an exellent movie

4-0 out of 5 stars Easier to experience than the movie!
Having purchased this soundtrack along with its respective CD score (by Wendy Carlos), it is a wonderful installment to any soundtrack fan/buff. The awesome sound of classical music, contained in the CDs, in which director Stanley Kubrick chose for the picture, is so juxtaposing it is brilliant. Even if one does not know a lick of classical music, one can easily suggest this soundtrack as a useful introduction into the genre. Though the film may not be as easy to experience as the music contained inside, the soundtrack stands as a milestone for music in film perhaps only beaten by the director's previous work in '2001 A Space Odyssey'.

5-0 out of 5 stars Horrorshow Lomticks of Music to do the old Ultra-Violence By.
Bolshi Yarblockos, my droggies. Viddy thou this incredible soundtrack from the film A Clockwork Orange. Cued from the novel by Anthony Burgess, the musical selections mainly focus on the Beethoven obsession of the main character Alex, however Carlos's deep knowledge of the classical repetoire and Kubrick's neurotic perfectionism combine to fill out this album.I love most of the tracks here, and have listened to them since 1972.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful tribute to the artist
This CD is perfect in my opinion. The recording is perfect, the pitch is perfect, the tempo is perfect, and the track selections are perfect. I think the album samples Beethoven's most remarkable pieces of work from his early years to his death. I have heard many recordings of the Ninth symphony that was just executed poorly; which is a shame because it is such a powerful piece. However, this album does it superbly. Sir Georg Solti and Murray Perahia did an amazing job with this album.
5-0 out of 5 stars Very emotional and moving!!
I am a big fan of classical music. Beethoven, in my opinion, was one of thebest composers, Mozart 1st, Beethoven 2nd, etc. This album is very moving and filled with emotion. I am currently listening to Adagio Cantabile-from Piano Sonata No. 8-from the film album. This piece is so moving and emotional. Another piece was Moonlight Sonata which I especially liked. Beethoven loads this piece with love and emotion for his one true love. In my opinion, Beethoven was the best at writing emotional and moving music. Whenever I listen to his music, I am immersed in a world of emotion and feeling. His music is truly beautiful. Back to the album, Sir Georg Solti really captured Beethoven's genius and devotion to his music in this album. This album really accents the film. You cannot have one, you must have both the film and the soundtrack. This is a must have for classical music/Beethoven fanatics and people who want to get a great summary of Beethoven's genius. BUY THIS!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars good listen, but needs work

2-0 out of 5 stars Oscar Wilde plays Barber?

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Buy CD!
If you've seen 'Platoon', and 'Lorenzel's Oil', repeatedly hearing the same traumatic music, and want to own it to your music library, this would be the definite CD to buy. A tiny bit slower than what's heard on the screen, but with more emotive sounds on the strings, the New York Phil under Bernstein's baton would surely put you to tears for sure. I claim this is one of the best recording of Barber's Adagio for Strings (lined with Lenny's performance with the LA Phil on DG).
5-0 out of 5 stars Bernstein + Barber "Adagio" = Best
I love Barber's "Adagio for Strings" -- the mood, the emotion, the pace. However, it is trounced by most beginning conductors. I like the slower paced (around 10 minutes) renditions. This performance is my favorite, but the transfer to CD is not the very best (the LP seemed better on my high-end system). I also like Bernstein with Los Angeles (the recording is better, but the performance is not quite as good). I wish this recording would be remastered with 20-bit or HDCD. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't let the price fool you... This is a WONDERFUL album!
I knew I was getting a bargain [price] when I purchased this CD, but I'm happy to say both musically and technically, it's knocked my socks off!The warmth and vigor with which the London Symphony Orchestra (no slouchy establishment, needless to say) interprets and delivers Elgar's lush compositions is remarkable. What impressed me most, however, is the quality of the recording itself. The stereo separation of the instruments simulates sitting on the front row of an orchestra hall nearly perfectly, and the sound is crisp and clear.Priced under [small amt], this was a welcome suprise and bonus!Read more

Editorial Review

Robert Shaw learned from Arturo Toscanini, and in his stupendous 1987 recording for Telarc he managed to surpass the master on some points. He is unerring in his pacing and staging of climaxes, and draws phrasing and dynamics from the chorus that other conductors can only dream of. Points are made with exhilarating effect throughout the account: never has the bass drum in the Dies irae been as splendidly hammered as here, and the whooping brass in the Tuba mirum is breathtaking. The all-American solo quartet sounds a bit driven, especially the light-voiced Susan Dunn and Jerry Hadley, but their contribution is a strong one nonetheless. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb
I don't have anything to add to the excellent reviews, I just want to chime in with my vote. This was rated as the top recording of this piece when I bought it on recomendation of a tenor friend back in 1990 or so and it is probably the best sustained operatic performace I have found thus far. The power and the majesty of this piece needs to be heard to be believed. So... Buy it, make sure the neighbors are out, turn the lights out, it in your best listening spot, turn up the volume and press play.

Further to my review of the 18th of June below,it's just been brought to my attention by a kind reader that I have inadvertently ascribed the composition of the famous aria,"Nessun Dorma" from Turandot to Verdi himself.First of all,my sincere apologies to Puccini (probably still revolving in his grave !),and my apologies to you for grossly offending your musical sensibilities as you pass this way. That will teach me to spend a little longer editing my reviews before submitting them ! ... 3-0 out of 5 stars ... Symphony No. 8 isa Charm for Philip Glass
Philip Glass' Symphony #8 is arguably the best symphony he has written to date and one of the most spirited instrumental works he has created in years. Under the always faithful baton of Dennis Russel Davies with the Bruckner Orchestra Linz performing. Glass' most recent symphony proves that this mostly film and opera composer can create something in the world of (in his own words) abstract concert music worth listening to.
4-0 out of 5 stars An impressive new work
The purely orchestral Symphony No. 8, composed in 2005, is a change of pace from Glass' previous three symphonies which each had some type of involvement from a chorus or vocalist. The eighth symphony is cast in three movements. The brisk first movement is based on eight themes (coincidence?), none of which are particularly melodically distinctive; however the rhythmic drive keeps the listener engaged (for the most part) through this 19 minute movement.Compared to most of Glass' quicker movements, this one is unique. As opposed to the repetition of a handful of themes which gradually build in intensity until the work suddenly ends, this movement has several climaxes, which subside making the way for the appearance of the next theme.Although the rhythmic drive of this movement does not decrease, with the music pushed forward by pulsating strings and heavy use of the percussion (woodblock, tambourine, snare drum), the dynamic range of this movement is quite large.Surprisingly the first movement ends softly.
5-0 out of 5 stars glass reaches the summit
In this new symphony Mr. Glass deepens his musical language.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gould's unique sound
No pianist has been able to play these pieces as steadily and with as much control as Gould, nor with his reverence and clarity in fugues such as the c# and e-flat minor. In the C# major prelude in Book I Gould plays a wrong note in bar 37--a b natural for b#--but this more minor-sounding wrong line actually sounds interesting and maybe even better, and it contrasts with bar 45.I did not realize this elusive sound was a wrong note until relistening after a break of many years. It had to be either a deliberate change or a finger slip--no edition of the piece contains that note. There is also a finger slip in the C# major fugue on the 'and' of beat one in bar 17 where Gould bumps into an f#--that could not be deliberate. These are the only note errors I have found inGould's recordings, and I don't know that any outtakes have been released of the WTC.
5-0 out of 5 stars Listen to a more conventional recording first.
I highly recommend Gould's recording of WTC books one and two with the caveat that his performances reach the peak of the unpredictable and can be rather traumatizing to the uninitiated.
5-0 out of 5 stars Bach's individual fugual voices are crystal clear
I laughed out loud reading the extreme range of these reviews; some reviewers felt a need to not only insult Gould but anyone who recommended the CD as well (!)Well, you can place me squarely in the "You need this CD" category; this is my favorite WTC performance, and one of my favorite classical recordings. Gould seperates and clarifies the individual fugal voices like no other; to me at least, listening to this is a Bach experience of the highest order. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This is so beautiful
I've been a massage therapist for seven years, and I have lots and lots of relaxation music. I have owned this c.d. three different times because I have listened to it to the point of wearing it out several times over. It is so beautiful and rich in perfection, and if your smart its really easy to time your massage to. If your not an M.T. just get it to have in your collection when you'd like to relax, you won't be sorry.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Musical Tranquilizer
This is a terrific collection of many of Mozart's best known and mostbeloved pieces. You will probably recognize many of the melodies - and withthis CD, of course, you'll learn their names. This CD is really aptly named- it is a very 'relaxing' collection of beautiful music. One reviewer saidthat its great for the car - but also after that long, grinding day at work- you know, the kind of day where you feel especially eaten-up. You justwant to go home and sit in your favorite chair and put on some music...It is also an excellent album to get the kids started on lovely classicalmusic. Highly recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars guaranteed to relax you whether at home or in the car
this assortment of melodies is the perfect gift for the new mother, the new baby, or anyone else who wants to be stimulated by the classical sounds and soothed by the melodies. a definite must for the car - where muchstress occurs in traffic jams. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Dreadful, isn't it?
What you get here is one more review from a person who has not heard this compilation. But don't be hasty to skip it. I will try to make it informative.
5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful compilation of classical music.
This is a perfect introduction to classical music and I do not understand some of the overtly negative criticism from others. It is an excellent way to "get your feet wet," so to speak and then you can decide which composers you wish to become more familiar with. You would have to buy quite a few CDs to experience all this set has to offer.Although the CD title is tongue-in-cheek...and perhaps that is what people object to...there is nothing to criticize here.

1-0 out of 5 stars I doubt people who hate classical music would buy this
I figure this set is mainly for people who want to teach themselves to appreciate classical music. However, it's not how I started out (age about 17). In those days nobody seemed to think anyone would want to learn how to listen to classical music. I was held up by my family as a real freak. :-) Anyway, at the time, World Record Club was run by people with a wide knowledge of classical music (whereas today it's run by market-driven managers who know nothing about it) so I was able to buy LPs at such reasonable prices it didn't matter if I later found I didn't like what I'd bought. I could have done with some guidance, of course, because I honestly couldn't tell the difference between Bach and Bartok; that's how bad my listening skills were. One of my first Bach recordings was definitely not one I would recommend to a beginner (Menuhun's performance of The Musical Offering) so I could have landed up deciding I didn't like Bach. If this type of production is what it takes to bring more people to classical music, then I guess it has to be a good thing. I've given it only one star because there is no way I would want to own it! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Just for kids?? No way!!
This is wonderful classical music. If the kids like it, great! But, make no mistake about it, this is good for anyone. This is wonderful study music, reading music, or just plain relaxing music.Highlights include "Parade of the Wooden Soldiers"; "March of the Toys" (from BABES IN TOYLAND -- the reason I bought this CD); "The Sorcerer's Apprentice"; "The Little Train of Caipira" (no longer little when the music is over); and the audience favorite "Hoedown" (i.e. "Beef, it's what's for dinner!").
5-0 out of 5 stars The best classical album for kids!
This is a wonderful album. Very high quality, and every selection is beautiful. My daughter (who usually asks me to turn my classical music off) loves to pretend to gallop like a horse during "Rodeo" and march like a soldier during "Parade of the wooden soldiers". This is a pleasure for the whole family!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for Preschool Children

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a brilliant assembly of Debussy.
After listening to his "Greatest Hits," I know why he is considered one of the best.
5-0 out of 5 stars THIS IS THE STUFF RIGHT HERE!
I BOUGHT THIS BECAUSE I WAS TRYING EXPAND MY HORIZONS, YOU KNOW? CULTURALLY AND MENTALLY, YOU KNOW? SERIOUSLY THOUGH I WAS IN THE SHOP AND I WAS HAVING A GAZE AROUND THE PLACE AND THEN THIS PICTURE JUST JUMPS OUT AT ME, AND I PICKED IT UP AND IT WAS THIS DEBUSSY CHAP AND ID HEARD ABOUT HIM ON THE BBC LEARNING ZONE SO I THOUGHT ;why not?; SERIOUSLY THOUGH I DRAGGED IT HOME AND I POPPED IT IN THE OLD CD PLAYER AND IT FLOORED ME.......I MEAN SERIOUSLY THIS THING...AMAAZING STUFF..I MEAN TODAYS MUSIC HAS NOTHING, NOTHING NOTHING ON THIS STUFF RIGHT HERE.
5-0 out of 5 stars Debussy is the best. Ever.
I love Debussy and all of his brilliant work. I barely listen to any other classical music, so I am not an authority, just an honest lover of music. I play piano and love piano music, so I was not disappointed at a piano Flaxen-Haired Girl. I've never heard an orchestrated version and don't need to. This is a good introductory CD to Debussy's work, I love it! The only thing I don't care for is the Arabesque #1 (Track 9). The horn is kind of grating and clunky to hear in such an otherwise beautiful piece. Still, its interesting and different. Everything Debussy made is purest gold. ... Read more
