5-0 out of 5 stars Joshua Bell's playing is exquisite
Joshua Bell's exquisite playing turns these arrangements into Gold. In the hands of Perlman or Shaham these arrangements would be pure shmaltz, but Bell's playing is of the highest caliber.

5-0 out of 5 stars S'Wonderful
Love it!I had heard of Josh Bell but never had purchased any of his music.I am a full fan now. This cd is wonderful.I am a Gershwin fan and have been for years.Bell breathes new life into the old classics and the result is breathtaking. His touch with the violin is beyound discription. He even plays with George in one cut, Sweet and Low Down. That alone is worth the price of the cd.Buy this cd and expect to be enchanted. It has been in my changer for weeks now, I can't get enough.

5-0 out of 5 stars My Starter Bell CD
This CD was my introduction to Joshua Bell after hearing a track on our local Washington, DC, classical radio station. It was hard not to be struck not only by the warmth of Mr. Bell's playing but also by his phrasing. He is almost never flashy, but his nuances made me find new musical possibilities which I hope -- but somehow doubt -- Gershwin intended. This is Gershwin as you have never heard him before, and it desires a place in anyone's classical or jazz collection. ... Editorial Review

Gorgeously recorded so that all of Shostakovich's eerieness of texture (and harps) can be heard, Haitink's performance of the Fifth symphony is pretty wonderful. The bare landscape of the first movement, with its lonely oboe solos, leads into the very Mahlerian, faux-fun second movement with creepy ease. The Largo is introverted but poignant, with handsome, sustained pianissimo playing, and the finale has great energy, but not quite enough of the grotesque--it's a bit too well-groomed. The Ninth, on the other hand, is ideal, with a finale to rollick over, and a refusal to turn the sometimes sappy second movement into empty emotion. It's one of those moments when Haitink's coolness pays off. A good buy. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Five stars for a sparkling, vivacious Ninth, but set a snooze alarm for the Fifth
Here we have one triumphant Shostakovich performance and one nearly inexcusable one. The praise that Haitink's Shostakovich Fifth has garnered here is inexplicable--this is a plodding reading that barely gets on its legs for the entire first movement. Don't the reviewers below detect the total absence of rhythmic vitality and pace? I guess not. Oh well, one person's nobility is another's long nap.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Soviet Artist's Response to Just Criticism?!
The Symphony No. 5 is one of Shostakovich's greatest masterpieces, which can hardly be ascertained from its origins as a piece to satisfy the Soviet state's artistically stifling demands in music (for example, all other aspects of music had to be subordinate to melody). The previous year Shostakovich was savagely attacked in the Pravda for his opera `Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk District', primarily because Stalin was shocked by its graphic sex and violence, and the fifth symphony was Shostakovich's reaction to this scathing criticism. (He was undoubtedly aware that the article extended further than trying to damage his confidence, if he didn't produce music along the lines of the states prerequisites he would be imprisoned or killed.)
5-0 out of 5 stars Superb interpretation and ultra superb recording
I wish that Haitink made more amazing recordings like this one of the 5th and 9th symphonies by Shostakovich. He is usually thought of as being in the top rank of conductors, but by hearing this disc, you might think that he's just about the best. Maybe the amazing sound quality kind of makes him look good, but not really, this is just a greatly played superb interpretation. The Concertgebouw (which by the way is my favorite Orchestra at the present time) are on their toes throughout this version of the 5th. They are just truly amazing here, just as they are on most occasions. Did you know that this recording won the Gramaphone top prize for it's sound engineering? That was no surprise to me! Haitink alternated between the Concertgebouw and London Philharmonic for this symphony cycle, and of course the Londoners are in really fine form also, but still not the equal (in my opinion) of this fine dutch orchestra. I've never been quite so impressed with a classical cd's sound quality, except for a few cds of the conductors Christopher Hogwood and Trevor Pinnock. I haven't heard more than 8 or 9 different versions of the 5th, but this and Semyon Bychkov's version with the BPO in 1986 are my favorites at the present time. I think the Bychkov version has almost as good sound quality, and it's severely underrated, because I've never heard the Penguin Guide or any other classical magazine rate it, which is quite crazy, because it's a bold blistering performance that does deserve very high praise. This is also one of the best 9th's out there, but that is a symphony that I have not listened to very much to this point in my life, though I plan to listen to it more very soon. Haitink pretty much can't do wrong when he's conducting Bruckner or Shostakovich, but it you haven't listened to his Bruckner or Shostakovich, do yourself a favor and buy some, because he's definitely one of the top interpreters there are. If nothing else buy this for the demonstration sound quality, and I'm sure you'll fall in love with this incredible disc. ENJOY!!! ... Read more

Editorial Review

This unique, 80-minute opera must be heard. The title means "Fountain of Tears" in Arabic and refers to the place in Granada where Federico Garcia Lorca was executed by Fascist soldiers in 1936. The work opens in a theater in Uruguay in 1969. As the actress Margarita Xirgu, who collaborated with Lorca in the 1920s and '30s, is about to go on stage, she recalls memories of him and his death and the survivor's guilt she feels. Musical images take us back as well. The sounds of hoofbeats, a fountain, and gun shots punctuate the otherwise beautiful, tonal, highly Spanish-influenced score, filled with flamenco and rumba rhythms. The vocal lines are all highly singable as well as dramatic. The work is mostly scored for women's voices: Margartita, sung by Dawn Upshaw; Lorca himself, sung by Kelley O'Connor; Nuria, Margarita's student, sung by Jessica Rivera. There is also an ensemble of women's voices that do most of the work. Margarita dies just before going onstage. The trio for her, Nuria, and Lorca is about as beautiful as anything you'll ever hear. "What a sad day it was in Granada / The stones began to cry" isa refrain that recurs throughout the opera, and the whole piece is sheer poetry. This is stunning. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Am used to broadway, but this is a DIFFERENT KIND
I am really not at ease with writing a review on this item, but it is so interesting and good.Quite unexpected.I do not know how to categorize this, is this a modern opera?a folk opera? anyway, whats the use of labels as long as it is good and rewarding to listen to.All i know is i got hooked with the sound.the drama of it all, the quality of the voices, the elements.i bought my copy from itunes, which includes a listeners' guide.
5-0 out of 5 stars Strictly from the Musical Experience without the Opera Visual
'Ainadamar' is a breathtakingly beautiful work for voices and orchestra and while it is conceived and has been performed as a stage work (aka 'opera'), this listener has not had the privilege of seeing that form of this new work by Osvaldo Golijov. And that factor as its drawbacks and its advantages: without relying on the visuals of a stage production the music on this very well produced CD allows total commitment to the music values alone. The music is exquisite!
5-0 out of 5 stars Absolute Masterpiece
There have not been many great opera written in the 20th/21th centuries save Glass and Adams but this one is a real gem.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exquisite
My partner put me on to this CD. It's the most beautiful music I've ever heard. Deceptively simple, profoundly moving.
5-0 out of 5 stars Profound simplicity
Just like writing a short letter is harder than writing a long letter, so it is with music.I hate 90 percent of "New Age" music a la Steve Halperin because it is lazy composition, as if playing fewer notes and holding them longer or repeating phrases endlessly is enough to create profundity. On the other hand, we have this in its deep, deep simplicity, each note purposeful and so well thought out.For example in Spiegel im Spiegel, at one point in what is a sweet undulating melody are these little staccato high notes that are almost jarring in their abruptness and yet delightful, as if to wake you up and listen.Another composer would have just kept the same flow unalteringly, good, versus inspiring.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fǖr Alina, a love song.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally, the wait is over...
I never understood why this opera was not given a recording much earlier. In any event, here it is, almost 15 years later, and the wait has been worth it. The recording is generally of excellent quality. The orchestra sounds lush, and the vocals are strong, over all.
4-0 out of 5 stars Not Glass's best, but better than anyone else
Although not Glass's greatest opera (that title remains with 'Akhnaten' or 'Satyagraha'), this is still a monumental work. All the trademark Glass's trademark touches are there, the chugging chords and rippling arpeggios, but these are leavened by the harmonic freedom typical of his mature work. Although some of the vocal parts are at times underpowered, Glass's choral scoring is among his best. The spaceage parts of the Opera are suitably futurific, and his Columbus section features some charming latin pastiche.
5-0 out of 5 stars Glass' Fantastic Voyage
Philip Glass' latest recording "The Voyage" is indeed one of the composers' most brilliant works for the stage. The opera is an oblique portrait of Christopher Columbus and its main theme is not set on him per se but more on discovery itself. Along with writer David Henry Hwang and the expert conducting of Dennis Russel Davies with the Landestheater Linz, "The Voyage" creates a real adventure in both sound and in imagination.

Perfect music to end the work day. After listening to this I can face the evening. If the morning is hard, a little at lunch time gets me through the afternoon.

I first developed a taste for this music a number of years ago when my daughter started playing in the orchestra. The reason I made this purchase however, was because I have a great deal of difficulty with anxiety and I was looking for ways to find help. I love these CDs. It helps so much to sit and close my eyes and enjoy the music. The CDs are full of beautiful music.

This is a good introduction to Tchaikovsky for the beginner that gives a broad sampling of his work. Considering the price, it's a good value if someone is just wanting to begin exploring classical music or Tchaikovsky in particular.

5-0 out of 5 stars Two Beethoven cycles from the Alban Berg--which one is better?
Founded in 1971, the Alban Berg Quartet of Vienna was the dominant ensemble in the quartets of Mozart and Beethoven for two decades. Such was their pre-eminence that EMI recorded two complete Beethoven cycles with them over the span of less than five years. The first was made in the studio in 1985, the second was recorded live at the Mozart Saal in Vienna in 1989--since the latter contains applause, it's obvious which is which upon hearing htem. But online stores like Amazon, Tower, and Crotchet do not distinguish between the two.The one pictured herer is the studio cycle.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great music - quality control problem with CDs
These are wonderful renditions of these Quartets.I had worn out my records and finally decided it was time to get a CD version of this fantastic music. The first thing that came as a surprise was when Disk Number 4 would not load into Itunes on my Mac.I was able to get it to work on my Wife's PC and copy it onto a new CD and get past the problem that way, but it seemed odd my MAC could not read this disk. Then I discovered all the tracks on each disk are mislabeled after the first quartet. This meant manually correcting each entry on every disk (7 of them) which was labor intensive.I love the music but any potential buyer who purchases these with the intention of loading them into their IPOD should be aware of this quality control problem.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Top Cycle
This set is one of those opportunities to get in on wonderful performances at a great price. I had to weigh in because I was surprised to find some less than stellar reviews of this set- one reviewer below actually wrote a review for a completely different recording, giving this one 3 stars not even having heard it.

5-0 out of 5 stars My very favorite music CD ever
My husband and I used to listen to this every night before sleep. After he passed away, it was years before I could listen to it without crying my eyes out. I know that the original has no lyrics, as one poster mentioned, but I absolutely love that one. "When will we ever touch again"... speaks to my very soul.I am here buying it again because I wore out the first copy. You can't go wrong with this CD...

This CD is great for listening to soothing music while you kick back and relax.I find many of the songs on the CD have a calming affect on me, which is great. The sound quality is not grainy or bad. Some classical music CD have point in the track were it is very hard to hear what is going on.I know that parts of music are supposed to be quite or very quite, but some are to the point where you can't hear anything. This CD doesn't have any of these problems. Overall great buy.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best "Sinfonie Fantastique" for the Price
I concur with what other reviewers have said on this page: this is one of the most exciting versions of Berlioz's classics around. The Philadelphia Orchestra, whose beauty of tone is often praised, can also get whipped up to a lather by the right conductor and score, and having heard Muti in concert many times with the Orchestra, I can say he had that effect more often than did (and do) the Orchestra's other august music directors. A comparison of this performance and the fine old recording with Ormandy on Sony shows just how much more energized the players are here for Muti. The last movement has some truly hair-raising moments in it, moments in which ensemble might have slipped if a lesser body of musicians were involved.
5-0 out of 5 stars Undoubtedly the best "Fantastique"
Even after hearing this symphony constantly growing up, I never once found myself notably drawn in by the music. While I liked to listen to it and was impressed by its historical significance, it never struck my fancy as anything other than background music. Sure, the music itself is loaded with plenty of stuff to enjoy, but I never heard any interpretation of it that showcased it enough and really delivered some actual substance to the hype of this Romantic masterpiece.

I can't say enough good things about this piece. It has quickly become one of my favorites. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars excellent
This is a really good John Williams compilation.Rather than being only a single theme or melody from each of these movie scores, most of the tracks here are abridged concert suites.I usually prefer to hear these shortened presentations of Williams' music; with the exception of Jurassic Park and Memoirs of a Geisha (and possibly the Star Wars scores), I find a full hour of one of his film scores a bit much, considering that a great deal of the complete soundtracks are spent repeating and reorchestrating the same few melodies.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent music compilation
Bottom line up front, this is one of the best John Williams compilations available. It has not only memorable movie soundtrack songs, but also his music from the Olympics. While other John Williams music CDs have lots of songs, this one has some of the best variety compared to others.

5-0 out of 5 stars Williams is the best there is at movie scores
This 2 disc set has some of the highlights of his magnificent career up until 1999. His movie scores total 80+ and include the 'Star Wars' saga, 'Close Encounters of...', 'Superman', and 'JFK'. If you are a movie goer of any degree, you have heard his work. This is a great set to purchase for many reasons whether or not you are a classical music fan. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Totally awesome!
My father was a Marine in the ETC, he told me stories about how they went floor to floor checking for bad guys humming this music. I think it is great music to listen to, I really like track 3, it says so much in the title alone. I hope everybody like this music as much as I do! ... Read more

Editorial Review

What can one say about a 15-year-old composer, after listening to his Fifth Symphony or his string quintet, that won't be either of the "precocious genius" type or the "for his age" type?Don't expect Mahler and don't expect Mozart. Just judge the music by itself: Greenberg is an adept composer. His music is both good to listen to and interesting. A composer now for many years (he began playing cello at three), Greenberg's influences and derivations are clear--here's a bit of Shostakovich, here's some Bartok---but he also is developing a voice of his own and has the technique to do it. Greenberg can write a good fugato, his melodies linger, he knows how to get the oboe's plaintive side into focus, and his climaxes are built up and effective. He writes a good, somewhat sullen waltz (the Symphony begins with it). The Quintet uses two cellos (he seems to like the lower strings) and, in all, is the more engaging of the two works. José Srebrier leads the LSO with sensitivity and the Juilliard Quartet is, as ever, superb. Is this "great" music? It's hard to say--but you can be sure it's strong enough to be taken seriously and programmed at a concert hall near you. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding: please welcome a major new talent.
This new CD of Jose Serebrier leading the London SO in the Fifth Symphony of prodigy Jay Greenberg heralds the official recording arrival of a major new talent to the world of classical music. For those who have been following this youngster's career from the piece on 60 Minutes and radio performances of his early works, you already know that Greenberg is a child prodigy who insisted on starting to play an instrument (cello) at the age of 3, and was composing shortly thereafter. His entry into the Julliard School and subsequent tutelage has been watched with anticipation the world over.
5-0 out of 5 stars THE SEREBRIER MAGIC DOES IT AGAIN
Listening to this Greenberg debut CD, it becomes obvious that the brilliant performance, the beautiful phrasing, are a trademark of the conductor Jose Serebrier. The end result is a magnificent, ebullient performance by the great London Symphony Orchestra, obviously inspired by the maestro. The Symphony No. 5 (are there symphonies 1 to 4?) sounds like the work of a mature composer, not at all a 14-year old (he says in his liner notes that he worked on this symphony since he was 12!). The work does make an impact, in this great performance, and deserves to become part of the repertoire. Let us hope that orchestras around the world pick it up, and hopefully commission the young composer to write new symphonies and concertos.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Beautiful!!!!!1
If you are a fan of classical music then you better get this set. Not only is it very cheap, 10 Discs for about 2$ per disk. Now where are you gonna find a deal like this. I actually found mine chaper, $20.00 even and the music is outstanding. If you had a very bad day and very stressed out, just put in one of these cds, lay down, dim down the lights and just relax. It really helped me out.
