I play this at the office and it reduces my reaction to the stress. A keeper!

Editorial Review

Leon Fleischer is the extraordinary pianist who lost the use of his right hand to a neurological ailment in 1964 at the height of his career. Undaunted, he took up teaching, conducting, and performing the left-hand literature so brilliantly that it was hard to believe he was using only one hand. When he returned to two-handed playing after years of medical treatments and determined, arduous rehabilitation, the public greeted him not only as a great artist but a conquering hero. This disc is his second two-handed recording (the first, Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A worthy successor to "Two Hands"!
Glad to note the recording's just that touch less distant and reverberant than "Two Hands" (far from dry!) that makes this sound so much like Fleisher does in concert, if closer, perhaps more ideally intimate than in real life. If anything Fleisher's playing now sounds even more technically secure again (jaw-dropping, actually, given his life"journey"), musically of course, I've become so partial to anything he's recorded at any stage in his career, I dare not say much: I can see why one critic has already referred to his interpretation of Mozart's K. 282 Sonata as "fussy" - it is indeed intricately detailed. So what? The better the stereo system one uses to listen to this, the more it becomes apparent no grace note's running against the flow - nothing wrong with seeing old warehorses in a new light, or is there? As to the Bach pieces, comparing the 'Traumatic' (!) Fantasy and Fugue to recordings by Edwin Fischer and Wilhelm Kempff (live on BBC Legends), I can only say that hearing it in another great interpretation is again improving my appreciation of what has always been one of the most fascinating, if never the easiest Bach to me to fully grasp. It's fascinating that Fleisher manages once again (as on "Two Hands") to set a mood for the whole disc (right away with Bach's "Arioso: Adagio" from the "On the Departure of a Brother" Capriccio, the whole of which he plays with genuine simplicity) and yet give each of these diverse compositions its due. The Bagatelle wrongly titled "Für Elise" receives one of its finest interpretation here (right now comparing it to Hungerford's more "daring" reading), for example. As happens to me so often with Fleisher, I'm also increasingly impressed with Stravinsky's Serenade, a piece I may so far not have taken seriously enough. In short, the riches here are once again far too many to enumerate...

Perfect music to end the work day. After listening to this I can face the evening. If the morning is hard, a little at lunch time gets me through the afternoon.

5-0 out of 5 stars Greatly enjoy!
I first developed a taste for this music a number of years ago when my daughter started playing in the orchestra. The reason I made this purchase however, was because I have a great deal of difficulty with anxiety and I was looking for ways to find help. I love these CDs. It helps so much to sit and close my eyes and enjoy the music. The CDs are full of beautiful music.

This is a good introduction to Tchaikovsky for the beginner that gives a broad sampling of his work. Considering the price, it's a good value if someone is just wanting to begin exploring classical music or Tchaikovsky in particular.

Hello everyone,

My husband and I are musicians so I inwardly groaned when we were given this CD as a gift--I'd rather play the originals rather than some synthesized kiddie version. However, on a recent road trip we got desperate when our colicky son would not stop screaming. We popped this in the CD player and it calmed him down immediately.I swear, it's like aural crack for babies. We now play it at bedtime to help calm him down and it still works. You may not love this CD, but your baby will. ... I actually found mine chaper, $20.00 even and the music is outstanding. If you had a very bad day and very stressed out, just put in one of these cds, lay down, dim down the lights and just relax. It really helped me out.

5-0 out of 5 stars Barbirolli at his most warm-hearted and passionate
In some ways the greatness of Sir John Barbirolli was masked by his devotion to the HalleOrchestra, an ensemble that was in a shambles when he arrived in WW II and was raised to the level of pretty decent. Despite their love affair, the Halle wasn't worthy of Barbirolli's talents, and on the rare occasions when he recorded with other orhestras--especially his late-life engagements in Berlin--the veil dropped away.
5-0 out of 5 stars Desert Island Disc
If I were stuck on a desert island and could only have 1 disc, this would be it.Sublime.Words won't do justice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Music to break your heart
I was able to attend several of Sir John Barbirolli's concerts in the last ten years of his life and particularly remember his Verdi's "Requiem" and Schubert's Ninth Symphony. He was, however, most noted for his Elgar. On this disc Elgar's already heartbreaking music is invested additionally with Barbirolli's own sense of "the tearfulness of things". His interpretation of Vaughan-Williams' "Variations on a Theme of Thomas Tallis" is sublime. These performances go beyond what is on the page and become transcendental. Anyone not moved by this disc truly has a heart of stone. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Ragtime Marvel
This collection of Scott Joplin's piano music is outstanding. As a lover of ragtime which was a prelude to jazz, I am thoroughly enjoying this collection. If you are not a lover of jazz, you may be a lover of ragtime. Jazz can sometimes be grating on the nerves, whereas ragtime lifts the spirit.

3-0 out of 5 stars Complete, but poor quality
I have been learning some ragtime and wanted to hear more to find other selections to learn.Listened to Maple Leaf Rag, my favorite, first and was disappointed.Listened to others and was more disappointed.Maple flies - much faster than anyone would play it, you can't make out some of the phrases. And talk about ad libs - Tempo, dynamics, embelishments, nuances - I really think he plays some wrong notes too because he's going so fast. It's really a poor recording - and that's just on Maple Leaf.Others with "intros" start quick and then there's a grand pause, not a rest, but nearly a five second break. It's hard to argue how Joplin would have played it, but this is hardly anything I want to try to imitate. The only qualitating factor is the number of songs for the price.A lot of variety of a poor interpretation is only worth 3 stars.if that.Look for Rifkin or a copy that is as written to listen to first, then go for the ad libs and "artistic interpretations"

5-0 out of 5 stars Joplin on a budget?
Are these the best renditions of Scott Joplin's compositions?....probably not....Is each and every piece played measure for measure the way he wrote them?....Definately not.

5-0 out of 5 stars beautiful reflections
Having just returned to England after a long spell living in Spain I was searching for an evocative suite of Spanish guitar music to accompany my extensive array of photographic studies. Being familiar with the work 'Recuerdos de la Alhambra' I was immediately attracted to this compilation: 'Reflections of Spain'. The music was a revelation. David Russel made the guitar sing lyrically, recalling many bitter sweet moments of life in Iberia. The light and shade of the choices included covered such a broad scope as to fit my purpose exactly and give enjoyment better than I could have hoped for.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best
This is the best Spanish guitar CDs that I have found.Even with "Essential Guitar: 33 Guitar Masterpieces" having more tracks and two CDs, this is better material.I am not saying that "33 Guitar Masterpiece" was bad, I actually rate it second. No need to skip through "Reflections" like many other compilations of this mixed type CD.The quaility is crisp but lower overall peak (loudness) sound compared to some of my other CDs.Read reviews of other CDs of this type because there is many that have substandard recording measures.I believe this is a must for the any guitar lover!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Yet another Spanish guitar music....
Like every one else I have probablyheard all other worthy versions of most of these tunes....I happened to find out about David Russell via reading a bio of Barrios and recommended recordings....it said...Dave Russell is the man...I had not heard of him before that...I got the CD...and WOW...!!then I got interested in his music so I bought anything I could from him including the Aire latino , plays Bach and this one....this guy was born to play the classical guitar...

There's something for every Tchaikovsky lover on this disc. From Swan Lake to Onegin, many of Tchaikovsky's most-known melodies are on this disc. 5-0 out of 5 stars Incredibly Musical Peformance
In my opinion, this is one of the best Classical CDs ever produced.I listen to it often and I am amazed at what an incredibly MUSICAL performance Branford Marsalis had.If you like saxaphone, I think you will love it.If you don't, I think you will still find it valuable because the technique, the phrasing are quintissential.

3-0 out of 5 stars Just a small point of rectifition
None of the works presented here precede the invention of the saxophone. Please look this up. You will find the saxophone invented around 1840, yes early romantic. And in addition, I believe many of the composers here used the saxophone at least once in their music. This is certainly true of Stravinsky, Debussy, Ravel and Villa-Lobos. (Villa-Lobos used the saxophone in at least 40 works!)

2-0 out of 5 stars What am I missing?
I think it is very admirable that Marsalis has attempted to produce a classical CD, however, this is not the sublime, masterpiece that so many previous reviewers have labelled it. His tone is particularly unstable, and not very even, his soprano playing is miles better than his alto however. This is a real shame, as the primary solo instrument in the saxophone family is the alto, anyone beginning study in classical saxophone would need to get this sorted first. His tuning is barely acceptable, but only for a jazzo, he would be shot if he played so out for a real saxophone teacher. Please have a listen to some real repertoire for saxophone, played by a real player, such as Bornkamp, Rousseau, Delangle, Fourmeau, Michat, Londeix, etc. This is a good INTRODUCTION to classical music, if for the first time, but please don't accept this as being the be all and end all of classical music, and of saxophone. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Superb, lush and enchanting!!!
It is very hard for me to be objective when reviewing this CD. I'm in the same situation as one other reviewer said, my father used to play this record frequently when I was growing up. Of course, as a little kid, you will not always make a note of such things, and may not even care about it. I had not listened to this record since the mid eighties (when our last turntable broke and we made the transition to CD's). As soon as I started listening to it I was taken back to that time of my life, and all of these memories which I did not knew I had came back to me. This record had been part of my life's "soundtrack". It would be easy for me to be over-analytical, since I happen to have a degree in music, but I would not dare to do so. The music is pure, absolutely beautiful. If anything, even though back when it was recorded it won awards for its sound quality, nowadays we have been spoiled with modern sound recording quality. You can certainly hear that the recording was not made recently, but it is the performances that count, and these will always sound as fresh and magnificent as the day they were first captured on tape. At the first Grammy Awards in 1959, Salli Terri was nominated for Best Classical Performance, Vocal Soloist, along with Callas, Tebaldi, and Ferrell (Tebaldi won). The album did win the Grammy for Best Engineered Classical Record, a honor richly deserved as evidenced by the glorious sound of this CD.5-0 out of 5 stars An all-time romantic classic
I first heard this as an LP in a coffee shop in Monterey, CA, just before proposing to my wife.I gave it to her as a wedding present and we wore it out playing it so much. Now I have finally found it on CD.It is (and always has been) composed of double duets, guitar and soprano and guitar and flute. It is hauntingly beautiful and extraordinarily performed. You will find its themes running through your mind for days after hearing it. This is an all time classic to give to your best lovers and friends. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Tchaikovsky and Tchai
I wondered what do Tchaikovsky and Tea have in common, and then I remembered that in many countries across the world - the word for tea is "tchai".That aside, yes, this is a refreshing blend of music, perfect for tea time - relaxing and reviving at the same time, and quite a bit dreamy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Teatime...or otherwise.
I've owned this for years & play it often. It IS perfect for teatime, as it makes pleasant background music which you can talk over....but is also great w/volume up in car w/it's rambunctious side and incredible instrumentation.A really nice blend of Tchaikovsky's pieces.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tchaikovsky's Dreamier Music:A Soothing Album
"Set your Life to Classical Music" is a fine album series that feature beautiful classical music for background music of any occasion- weddings, barbecues, breakfast, beauty sleep, bathtime, reading a book, romantic dinner, massages you name it. And indeed many classical pieces are perfectly therapeutic sessions in themselves. This album features the more intimate-sounding, soulful, sweet and relaxing tunes of Tchaikovsky. He did compose heavier and more dramatically intense music- his later symphonies, his Overtures and operas. But here we hear no Russian fire or harshness. Instead we are treated to the charming Mozartian style works of the Roccoco Variations and the Piano Trios. The disc also features the Andantino from his Piano Concerto No. 1 - and that piece is almost a Chopin Nocturne, with beautiful soft rubato and dream-like qualities. Included here is also the Pas De Deux and Odette and Siegfried theme from his ballet Swan Lake, lilting and graceful as the dancers movements themselves. The dance divertissements from Nutcracker round out the ballet segments with charming allure. The melancholy String Quartet and Serenade For Strings is here as well and not to mention the beautiful, wistful excerpts from the ballet Sleeping Beauty, his greatest ballet. The Panorama and Vision of Aurora played with delicate strings and sublime technicality. This is indeed a "refreshing blend for body and spirit" and is in fact perfect to listen to while drinking tea cosnidering you drink tea. I have tried it and believe me the experience is very soothing and refreshing. Try putting this on in your miniature CD player with headphones, then go out into an outdoor, natural environment, a park or a backyard garden or patio, and drink tea or read a book and you will find this is a fine companion. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Simply put, an excellent bargain!
Philippe Entremont may be better known as a world-class pianist than a conductor. As a pianist, he collaborated with prominent figures including Leonard Bernstein and Eugene Ormandy, but he himself turns out to be a very good conductor.
5-0 out of 5 stars Totally Excellent
I was listening to a biography of Tchaikovsky on cassette and5-0 out of 5 stars Among the best Serenades available
The previous reviewer talked about Souvenir de Florence on the CD, which is indeed very good. However, I am less familiar with Souvenir than the Serenade, so I'll comment on that instead. At the risk of sounding trite, the performance here is among the best available.Vienna Chamber Orchestra does a wonderful job trying to maintain the clarity of the work, allowing the listener to hear the individual parts of the work. For example, I've never really noticed some of the beautiful countermelodies in the Waltz until I listened to this recording. The interpretation is also first-rate.Entremont brings out the warmth of the music well, plus the tempo never drags. The result is a finely performed work that will captures the listener's attention throughout the piece.Oh, did I mention that the recorded sound is VERY good?Read more

Editorial Review

The Segovia heard in these recordings, made between 1927 and 1939, is quite different from the somewhat enfeebled legend who toured and recorded through his 80s. The flashing virtuosity and color of the best of these 78s compares better with the virtuosic standards of the '90s. Just hearing Tárrega's familiar Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Great Track Selection but Not So Great Sound!
This is a good sampling of the great master's earlier works and I suppose given the age of the recordings, it's inevitable that the sound quality would suffer. It doesn't help when this album is recorded in Mono from an ADD master source as well. What this means is that the sound quality is very poor indeed.Given the state-of-the-art sound engineering technology that is out there these days, I hope EMI decides to revisit the vaults and dig up the best preserved master tapes and remaster these in stereo and clean up as much of the sound as is possible for re-release.That would be the only way to do justice to the memory of this all-time guitar great. They've already done this with Django Reinhardt's early work and so it's about time they got around to updating and remastering the Segovia catalog.I, for one, will be waiting for the day with great anticipation...

5-0 out of 5 stars ALL SEGOVIA IS GREAT
Gotta have that slow spanish guitar when things get hectic.Spanish guitar by Segovia (not the more frenetic flamingoists which is another mood) and other slow subtle spanish greats fits a special mood.I usually mix it with nature music, oud, sitar, and Anouar Brahem (all).

4-0 out of 5 stars I'm not a music expert
I don't know too much about music.I own over 700 cds, but I don't play music and I don't have much experience with this music. My only point of reference was the ninth symphony, seeing as every other piece in this box set was new to me.It sounds fine, nothing wrong with it as far as I can see.
