2-0 out of 5 stars Major disappointment
Warning: I can't recommend this Cd due to the sound being so weak.I could barely hear it. Sorry I bought this.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellentsample
This two disc set is a good sampler of Beethoven; I had forgotten how inspiring his work could be.This set has motivated me to order all three of the Deutch Grammaphone two disc which together include all 9 of Beethoven's symphonies.

4-0 out of 5 stars Some of the Best
Some of these songs are the best that I've heard. I also enjoy the fact that this album provides the ENTIRE movement or selection, unlike some of the other albums that I've heard that only play for a little bit of the song. One example is Beethoven's Symphony No. 7 in A Major Second Movement, this movement is one of my favorites to begin with and hearing it so smoothly and masterfully recorded made my heart sing the first timeI heard this all the way to end (the other recordings usually stop after the major key shift after the first theme). Also the Egmont Overture is one of the best full versions that I've had the pleasure of enjoying performed this well. The Moonlight Sonata First Movement I found to be nice, but there are better versions out there. For those people just looking for a nice collection of Beethoven songs that are well recorded and well performed, I stronly suggest that you purchase this album. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Zinman, Tonhalle, Shaham, Mork & Bronfman: Brilliant Beethoven 2
Here we get part two of the ongoing series that seems to aim at getting all the Beethoven piano concertos, safely in the can.The familiar bottom line for this series? Get this CD right away. No matter who else already sits on your fav shelf for this music, you will find it quite easy to add this new recording of the Beethoven Triple Concerto, and the early Septet.Cheap price, too.But nothing cheap, nothing cheap at all about either the recorded sound, or the quality of these performances.

5-0 out of 5 stars Genius Made Manifest
Naxos' "Beethoven; Music for Horns Winds and Strings" is a phenomenal experience. The bubbling, piping, singing, nature of this music, and these instruments, is truly a delight, and whilst the mood is predominantly gleeful, amidst this joy there also lurks profundity, romance, serenity, and pathos.Beethoven did not treat these pieces as mere wallpaper music, but rather as symphonies in miniature; small orchestral works into which he poured the whole of his genius. These pieces move and progress with all the finesse, complexity and guile that we could hope for from Beethoven, and the excellent work of these first-rate musicians brings them bursting to life. The intimacy and passion of the chamber is here, alongside the sweeping movement, variation and grandness of the symphony.Unlike a previous reviewer, I find the Septet to be profoundly delightful and clever, and am willing to bet that the lion's share of listeners will join me in marveling at its beauty and ingenuity; the opening 1:40 of the first movementis particularly breathtaking. This is to take nothing from the quintet and sextet, which are luminous and thoroughly engaging as well.Sound quality is smooth and rounded, an effect (enhanced by the given instrumentation), which brings to mind the qualities of premium vinyl. The instruments don't seem to have been recorded at particularly close range, giving the listener the effect of sitting midway back in a medium-sized hall.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Chamber Music Collection!
This recording becamse an obsession of mine. I had heard of it's existence but could never find it until about a month ago. I was so excited, being a horn player, to see the Quintet for 3 horns, oboe and basson, since it israrely recorded. This is the highlight of the recording for me, itshowcases Beethoven's absolute brilliance in writing for Winds, particularly the horn. The sextet is another favorite piece of mine, thisrecording being a perfect example of impeccable balance between the hornsand strings. The low horn player needs to have absolute agility for thispiece, and this recording shows how it is done! The Septet is playedwonderfully also, but to tell the truth, is not really one of my favoritepieces. This recording is perfect for it's diversity in repetoire and theprice cannot be beat! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!
In his day, George Philip Telemann was more popular than Bach. But, as a Telemann fan, I GREATLY enjoy this CD.Additionally, I especially like flutes and violins. The CD includes one of Telemann's best pieces, Suite in A minor for Flute (Suite a-moll) which is a wonderful delight.Telemann also composed concertos for trumpet and one is included here as well.If you haven't tried Telemann, this CD would be a good bet. It's quite versatile too--can be just listened to, used as background music, meditated to, etc.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fine Collection of Baroque Concertos
Telemann certainly was a prolific composer. For some forty-six years he composed much for both church and court.5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, a great find
I really enjoyed this CD because I couldn't find the Suite in a minor by Telemann, until now.A beautiful Rejouissance I must say.I would love to hear longer samples of all the classical music, because I appreciate it so much. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars I guess I'm not as sophisticated as all of you...
Depth? Genius? This stuff sounds like your watching an old Bugs Bunny cartoon. Its like the background sound effects when Yosemite Sam steps on a rake or Daffy does a double-take. Imagine being Ray Charles or Andrea Bocelli and "watching" old cartoons: it's the same experience. But in this case, I'd rather be Marlee Matlin.

5-0 out of 5 stars A convert
I would like to speak in regards to what some reviewers are saying about the works of Schoenberg.I will admit that the first time I heard Schoenberg, I wrote him off as weird music that I would never like and was not worth listening to.In my defense, the first work I heard was "Pierrot Lunaire" which is a very hard work to understand. But I was assigned a paper of the Second Viennese School and its influences for music history and was forced to really listen to these works among others by much more extreme composers like Boulez and Cage (who I have yet to understand, but I am still young!)Once I stopped grumbling about how much I hated serialism and let myself really HEAR the music, I started to understand it and gained a begrudging respect for Schoenberg, which became a genuine liking. So in light of this, I dare anyone who is so willing to bash Schoenberg outright to really listen to his works and the works of those he influenced with an open mind and see if you can't at least respect the music for what it is.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent performance
Having owned nearly all avaliable recordings of all Schonberg, I have found all of Boulez's recordings on Sony to my favorite.

One of the best barroque recordings I've ever heard. I's musical, it's alive! I enjoyed the balance and sound quality of the instruments, and the incisively beautiful interpretation

5-0 out of 5 stars Fizzy, Rollicking Baroque Delights
This is one of my absolute favorite CDs, and I'm happy to see that it's still available after some fifteen-plus years. In my book, the much-maligned G.Ph. Telemann is restored to the top of the class with this wonderful stuff from Reinhard Goebel and his MAK. Telemann, proflific as he was, did produce some music that will put you to sleep. But none of that exists on this zippy disc. This is rocket-powered Baroque music, played with style, assurance and obvious affection. The instrumental combinations are amazing and a pure delight; every concerto on this disc is a winner. Really. ... Read more

War.Tough subject these days - tough subject since the beginning of time.Yet Americans tend to mend wounds and gradually allow the atrocities of yesteryear to fade into coated cases that signal more memories of 'how things used to be' rather than learning from the tragedies with which war has scarred the planet.National Public Radio issued this excellent memoir at the turn of the millennium and one wonders if it now has the same response that greeted it in 1999.

Editorial Review

Classical music for children has become a genre unto itself, founded on the premise of brain-power building and all too often steering parental buyers away from the full-blown versions of particular compositions toward reorchestrated renditions. It's frequently the case that a brain-tickling classical set will be played on digital keyboards, with softened tonal colors and shapes. Not so with this excellent Beethoven set. Recognized ensembles take up the music, from the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center to the New York Chamber Symphony to the Oxford String Quartet and the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra. The emphasis is on Beethoven's gentler side, from the poetic "Für Elise" for solo piano to the bucolic settings portrayed in the two selections from Beethoven's Symphony No. 6. This is neither a synapse-popping set of virtuoso performances nor an altered look at Beethoven, but it is a well-selected, well-programmed set of works that will ease a child's brain into the works at hand. 5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Music, Beautiful Renditions
This is lovely, soothing music suitable for babies or tired adults!I began listening to it and other "Baby Needs" CD's (the Guitar compilation is wonderful too) before my daughter was born, and have continued to play it for her ever since.Even Classical music purists shouldn't object to hearing just portions of major works-- the compensation is having a complete collection of calm, peaceful music.Highly recommended.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pleasant music to listen to
I am just begining my appreciation for classical music and bought this cd pair to help me begin.I truely enjoy it while doing yard work, cross stiching, studying, or going to sleep.I have not noticed the hissing that other people have complained about, but I do believe that this is not the best quality cd.There have been many times when the second disc would not even work, like the player couldn't read it.This was very frustrating, so I mainly stick with the first disk.I would not recomend this cd, however, I would recomend the music. If you can find these songs on another disc, get it, you will find some time in your daily routine that it will fit right in with.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great selection, poor sound quality
Adagios are beautiful and represent the depth of the composer. However, as one reviewer stated before me, the sound quality is poor. Some pieces have to compete with the hiss to be played as they should be at normal volumes.I hope that another label can come out with such a stunning array of adagios but with a much improved sound quality. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Beethoven's complete music for wind ensemble
It might be hard to believe that the same composer who wrote such monumental and daunting works as the Fifth Symphony, the Hammerklavier piano sonata or the late string quartets also wrote such light and airy tunes like the duet for two flutes (WoO 26) featured in this 4-CD collection.Indeed, such light, galante music was written early in Beethoven's career in Bonn or his early years in Vienna (1794-1800) where he established himself as a serious new composer to watch. In fact, the wind Octet (Op. 103) was composed as "pleasant dinner music" for the Elector of Bonn who had a prized wind ensemble (high opus number but early work). But, after composing many of these delightful pieces, Beethoven never returned to them and focused on more substantial compositions for symphony, string trio and quartet and, of course, the latest, most fashionable instrument to arrive in Vienna - the pianoforte. The rest is history.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Fabulous Introduction to Igor Stravinsky!!
Sony Music's "The Essential Igor Stravinsky" truly lives up to its title. This double-CD set includes nearly every important piece of work (either in part or in whole) by the great Russian composer. The set also presents the pieces in chronological order beginning in 1908 with "Fireworks" and ending in 1966 with his final piece, the short but simple "Owl and The Pussycat". In between, there are excerpts from Stravinsky's most famous works including the first part of "The Rite Of Spring" and highlights from the "Firebird" and "Petrushka" ballets. There are also lesser-known works included as well as his harmonically rearranged version of "The Star-Spangled Banner" (a rendition which caused a stir in the early 1940's). The entire collection concludes with a rare recorded interview with Igor Stravinsky himself in which he remembers the infamous premere of "The Rite Of Spring".Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Stravinsky the Composer, not Stravinsky the Conductor
It is a pretty good collection, lots of music from Stravinsky's entire carreer, but one must keep in mind that Stravinsky was a brilliant composer, and not a commanding maestro. You will not necessarily be getting the best recordings of these works. For example, something like the Boulez/Cleveland Rite of Spring is far superior to those in this collection. He is a vastly better conductor, and is much more capable of making the orchestra perform Stravinsky's intentions than Stravinsky is.All in all, however, I am more than glad I own this set.

5-0 out of 5 stars Staggering! All the Stravinsky I'll ever need!
While I had heard some Stravinsky compositions prior to my purchase, this was the first (and only) Stravinsky material I have ever owned. As a young music enthusiast, the draw to me was to hear these pieces as Stravinsky conducted them and to get so many of them at such a great price, not to have the original jackets for the purpose of reminiscing. So, as someone who needed a good jump start into the works of Stravinsky (by Stravinsky), this set has proven totally invaluable. And while more information could have been packed onto these cds, I do appreciate how closely these discs have stuck to the original releases.I don't know about the portion of Petroushka which some reviewers claim is missing (as I don't know any other version), but I was totally blown away at hearing this version of Petroushka anyhow. In all, for whatever faults some sticklers may find here or there with this set, the value of this material collected in such a way (and at such a price) by far outweighs any possible faults.

5-0 out of 5 stars Magnificent!
A great collection. There is simply no substitute for hearing Stravinsky as the great composer wanted to have his music played. Here is so much and also so varied a collection. I have been enjoying this set a great deal. One of the 20th century's greatest composers conducting his own compositions. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Hard to believe that as early as 1958 there was a 25-year retrospectiveconcert of John Cage's music. But this 3-CD set documents both the concert andits meaning for the history of New Music. Organized by no less than JasperJohns, Robert Rauschenberg and Emile de Antonio, the event sparked heatedcontroversy--some of it documented in the crowd's reaction to Cage's early tape- music piece, Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The ideal starting point if you are new to Cage
This is perhaps one of the most important documents of American Music ever recorded, the Composer John Cage will undoubtedly be veiwed in future eras as not only the most important American composer of all time, but one of the most important Composers of all time. Until this time, also the work ofEdgard Varese, Pierre Schaeffer and Karlheinz Stockhausen, all music in "the west" written after Bach could have been found in Bach, it was even said if all music was lost as long as Bach remained it could all be discovered again. Here's where everything changes. To really appreciate Cage's music it is best to hear him or David Tudor perform or "conduct" it, they are both onboard here for this excellent three C.D. set. Most of Cage's major works are represented here, his percussion pieces, his prepared piano, even his tape music. Start here, then get Indeterminancy, Roaratorio, more preapared piano pieces, and Cartridge music. But DO start here, there are too many poor interpretations of Cage's music available, you can't go wrong with this. And if you already know Cage's music but don't own this, then you should be ashamed of yourself.

5-0 out of 5 stars A primary document of the American avant-garde
It was painters Jasper Johns and Bob Rauschenberg who helped arrange this, what today is a monumental document of the American avant-garde. And this was in the late Fifties a time when these American artists had very littlemoney. Here we have all the Cage classics. The "Sonatas andInterludes" for pre-pared piano speaks for itself. Cowell suggestedthis idea to Cage. So Cage while working on dance accompaniments where nopercussion instruments could be played, saw the availability of a piano.Hebegan placing various screws and erasers between the strings. The sound isgamelan-like with thuds, knocks, clings and pings. But also very beautifuleven enchanting. Also "Williams Mix" is here a very earlyelectronic piece made from the ancient art of splicing tape together in anindeterminate fashion. I believe Earle Brown had helped. "TheWonderful Widow of Eighteen Springs" is also fascinating where thepianist closes the piano lid to strike 5 various parts of the front pianoseated. The effect is not quite bongo-like more dull and thudy with adisarming folksy plain vocal lines singing Joyce. Pure simplicity was anearly Cage fascination which has not lost its power to evoke. The mammoth"Concert for Piano" is also here a seminal work conceived ofvarious graphic(almost encyclopedic) procedural ways of playing. Cage hadidentified some 40 odd ways of attacking, rolling verticalities andhorizontialities on the piano keyboard. The work is also a pure graphicfeast for the eyes, a delight. The orchestral accompaniment(we reallycannot call it that) is made of independent solos, trombone, violin with nodirect synchronization. And can be played with or without the piano orthese various instruments. But the effect can be anarchistic(non-political)mesmerizing,humorous,dead serious all simultaneously,or not, depending onthe performer's energy levels. Cage had opened a chasm of libertarianperforming and conceptual creative fluidity that hasn't been closed yet.His open creativity continues to inspire and redirect itself throughsucceeding generations. This is a monumental document from the earliestdays of the high avant-garde reflecting the full scope of these newaesthetic freedoms,or a turn away from an aesthetic object. Perhaps we willknow someplace in between. ... Read more
