5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent introduction to classical music
This is an excellent introduction to classical music.Well performed and presented.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Beautiful!!!!!1
If you are a fan of classical music then you better get this set. Not only is it very cheap, 10 Discs for about 2$ per disk. Now where are you gonna find a deal like this. I actually found mine chaper, $20.00 even and the music is outstanding. If you had a very bad day and very stressed out, just put in one of these cds, lay down, dim down the lights and just relax. It really helped me out.

5-0 out of 5 stars Still Stuck on Beethoven
I just recently started listening to classical music so I'm certainly not one to compare or critique the quality of this set. However, I do have a few comments...

4-0 out of 5 stars VALUE FOR MONEY
Dame Moura is my favourite pianist. Her great style and sublety of expression comes out in all her recordings. this CD is the best value for money ever!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good bang for the buck.
I was killing some time in the store the other day and was in the mood for a cheap CD for the car for the ride home. I ran across this and saw a few recognizable titles so for about $5 I figured I'd take a chance. I'm fairly impressed, I wasn't crazy about some of her dynamics in Un Sospiro plus her little added frill in there but still enjoyed it...I'd learned that piece myself years back, still can't play it and probably never will! Another piece I've known for years is the infamous Rachmaninov Prelude in C#m. Again, I wasn't crazy about some of the dynamics of her style but she still nails it without a hitch. Then I got to some other interesting pieces, I love the Debussy Golliwog's Cakewalk...really sticks in your head. Sort of a classisized (?) ragtime and it's cool enough that I'm going to dig through my music and see if I don't have it somewhere. I thought the Chopin Etude in C#m was absolutely fabulous, she just cooks through it from beginning to end. I probably have the music for that too...I'm not even going to attempt it! ;-) In fact, I liked all the Chopin she plays here, it seems she had a real flair for his music. Without going on forever here I'll just say that there are several tracks I listen to extensively on here and I'm fairly impressed. For a lousy $5 how can you go wrong? Just buy the thing! I'd never heard of her before so I just did a little 'net searching and I'm saddened to find that she just passed away about 8 months ago at age 88, truly a loss to the classical music world. In any case, even at twice the price I doubt anyone would be disappointed with this CD.

5-0 out of 5 stars Really good price.
This is a great CD and you can't beat the price. These piano compositions are great for restful backgroud music after a hard day.I want to get a second one for when this one wears out. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Our favorite CD for all occasions
This is absolutely my favorite CD that we bought for our baby! We've bought quite a few classical-music-for-baby compilations, and this is far and away the best. The music is fun, flirty, stimulating, sweet, and beautifully performed. It's not syrupy, dumbed-down, or played on electronic instruments like some of those other compilations. We listen to it all the time. I now buy this as a baby shower gift for everyone I know!

5-0 out of 5 stars Bach and Roll!
You can't beat Bach.If classical music is the thing you want for your baby, get this CD.If you are single and have no kids, but classical music is your thing, get this CD.This is fantastic reading music, study music (regardless of what you're studying), and just plain relaxing music.I also highly recommend the CD, BUILD YOUR BABY'S BRAIN 1.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good for the price.....
I listen to this CD while reading or when I need inspiration to play the piano. There are many classic pieces here that will have many recognizable sections to the non classical music fans. The sound quality is not amazing but the essence and technical difficulty of these pieces can still be heard. Most of the songs are under 5 mins and there is a mix of faster and slower tempos.
5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful relaxing and soothing music
This cd of piano classics has become one of my favorites.Since I am a full-time student and work out of my home the music relaxes me during times of rest.

2-0 out of 5 stars The Sound Quality Really Bugs Me
This is a good intro CD to famous piano pieces. However, the sound quality is really *poor*.Of course, what do you expect for the price?I'm sure there are better Piano Sample CDs out there that sound much better. It's worth the extra money, trust me. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars You never have enough Ravel - just never.
This two disk set is one of those that you should add to your collection because it is wonderful music, sounds great, and is extremely affordable.Everyone knows and loves "Bolro".Commissioned by Ida Rubinstein as a ballet and premiered in 1928 was not a musical success. At another performance, led by Toscanini, Ravel complained that the tempo was too fast.Toscanini replied that it was the only way to save the work. But it soon became a mass success to Ravel's surprise and consternation. He felt they loved it for all the wrong reasons. The violinist Hlne Jourdan-Morhange relates this interesting story of one incident involving the work:
5-0 out of 5 stars The Best of Ravel By Master Conductor And Orchestra
French-Canadian conductor Charles Dutoit and the Motneral Symphony Orchestra deliver what is the most musically satisfying collection of Ravel Bolero's French music. At a fine price, this is a fine jewel, with moments that sparkle and burn with a beautiful fire. The first track is of course the famous Bolero, with its hypnotic, singular theme that is expanded into a climatic crescendo which is overtly sexual, primal and sensuous. It was originally a ballet about a Spanish dancer (dancing the bolero of course) in a bawdy cafe. She is spurred on to dance even more erotically by the lusty men until we can assume the men can take no more. The Rhapsody Espagnole is an evocative portrait of Spain, with lyrical passages and tonal beauty. The Valse is another classic of French music of the early 20th century. Ravel's mother had died prior to the premiere. It is a slow, romantic waltz that escalates into a frenzied dance of death. In musical terms, there is nothing too different from La Valse and Bolero. They are both basically one motif that is repeated but changes in volume and pacing. The Pavane For A Dead Princess is my favorite work of his. It is possibly the most gorgeous funeral music one will ever hear. Far from being a melancholy piece, it is a stately, Renaissance-like work that pays homage to exoticism of the East and Romanticism of the West. The Dead Princess we assume is either Moorish or Spanish and the music is lilting and spiritual without ever reaching the heights of frustration or despair that Bolero or Valse take on. The Tomb of Couperin is also a funereal piece but its beauty lies in its imitation of Baroque music. Couperin was a Baroque composer of keyboard works. The music is aptly called neo-baroque or neoclassical since it was composed in the 20th century. This same style is embedded in Valses Nobles Et Sentimentales and Minuet Antique- all works that reflect the music of the Baroque and classical eras, an homage to Handel and Gluck. Daphne Et Cloe is perhaps his most ambitious work, as it expands on the Baroque classic and makes it more operatic and orchestrally grander. All fans of Ravel will want to own this recording. Dutoit knows this music down to a T and the orchestra captures nuance and subtlety in a variety of both light and dark textures. The music is brimming with life and the sound is crisp and beautifully remastered.
5-0 out of 5 stars I love it
This is a great 2 disk set.I am sitting here drinking a heineken and blasting this super loud.I feel like I am marching into town with 2 briefcases jammed full of big bills. I highly recommed this.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding performance
I have to concur with Del Dotto's opinion in the yr 2000, this is as close to definitive as possible.
5-0 out of 5 stars tour de force
Pascal Roges recordings of Ravels great piano works serves as a honest mark of the music that never was, but perhaps might have been. Gently capturing the sheltered aura of pre-novelite Chopin, whilst endowing the music with the acousto-eco-hyperbolies of Keats, this recording is not to be missed. one can almost sense the tragic embrace that beheld Toffy and Dolly in that one moment, that one eternal moment. Ah. I shall never forget it. Ravels piano works are, in all senses, composures of 20th century modernity, suffused with the country-stylised effects of, say, Emmylou Harris, and the impecably marked greenhouse-jubilance connecting all the pieces in one final exotic anti-frenzy makes certain implications on ones ability to hate. I dont hate this cd, for example. the best pieces are Jeux d'eau, what a hit! and Le Tombeau de Couperin. Buy this cd and you will/wont be very very happy.

4-0 out of 5 stars Ravel Piano Works- Pascal Roge
Having searched for ages for a definitive recording of the Impressionistic Masterpiece "Gaspard de la Nuit", I found it in this CD. Roge plays the technical inferno of Ondine and Scarbo with flawless taste and passion. This recording would rival that of Martha Argerich's famous recording of Gaspard that has long been thought to be the best. The Tombeau and Sonatine are also very nicely done. Sometimes however, with the smaller lesser known pieces such as the Minuet, you get the sense that he is sightreading, not truely feeling the music. Nevertheless this is a must have. ... Read more

I love classical music but I dont own very much of it, so I thought I would start my collection with Masters of the Bow. What a beautiful selection it was. I just love the sound of a Violin, Joshua Bell is my favorite,I would love to hear more from him. This collection really helps you get to know the masters. Lovely Lovely!

I love the violin and this collection is one of my favorites. A great choice for someone like me who doesn't know enough about music and never knows what to buy. It has introduced me to some artists and pieces that I knew nothing about and will help me know what to look for in violin music in the future. This is my favorite but I would also recommend The Cello and Voice CDs in the "Masters of" series. I can't wait for more in this series. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars It stays with them...
I enjoyed reading the reviews of parents whose kids have recently discovered "Classical Kids." I'm about to order the boxed set for my kids, ages 21, 19 and 16 because the nineteen-year-old, who has a college radio show and loves a wide variety of music, remembers this series (then only on cassette) with great affection and wants to hear them again. Those of you wondering whether it's worth it or not to try to introduce kids to classical music this way, be assured it works. We've turned one of Mr. Bach's lines into a family "saying:" "the more you study, the more you know; the more you know, the more you appreciate; the more you appreciate, the more you love." A great series!

5-0 out of 5 stars It all started with Beethoven
Many years ago I purchased my first CD in this series, "Beethoven Lives Upstairs." My children and I were delighted with it. I then discovered that there were more and searched them all out, one by one. My children, now 11, 9 & 5, have listened to these stories as they fall asleep for years. They each have a favorite composer and have gone on to learn more about them. These stories are a great introduction to some of our greatest composers. Not to mention a good intro to history, too!1-0 out of 5 stars Not What I expected
I love the idea, but I don't want to expose my children to the stories in these cd's.They contain children talking back to their parents, disrespectful language, sorcery, etc.If you don't like Harry Potter, you won't like these CD's. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Low Price....Low quality
This is not the way Ravel is supposed to be played. It sounds heavy-handed, and too Romantic for my taste. The texture variances and image-making techniques are not there. Also the sound quality is poor.If you just want to know what Ravel's piano music sounds like, then buy it for reference. But if you want to experience the music, I reccomend Martha Argerich.

5-0 out of 5 stars Destined to become a classic
I became familiar with this collection only after I had reviewed Louis Lortie's collection of Ravel's piano music.Although I gave Lortie a 5-star rating, and I believe that still holds true, I reach for Abbey Simon's collection more often. I also indicated that Lortie's recording had become my standard, and I am not sure I would continue to say that -- Simon has challenged Lortie in that position.I completely agree with the previous reviewers who note that this collection is a find at any price, and that the special characteristics of Abbey Simon's artistry finds its most perfect expression in Ravel's piano music5-0 out of 5 stars No better deal out there
More than competent playing. Two full CD's. Though the sound is a bit dry and recessed at times, Simon's tone sparkles enough and comes through when it should (Valses... Gaspard la Nuit, for example). For the price, this double CD cannot be beat. Simon's playing is even and consistent, very scholarly, almost pedantic but never boring, and a great study for those who are interested in learning about Ravel's music, much of which, referring to his symphonic work, pre-existed on the piano. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Sumptuous performances!
Since their early years this curious ensemble has detached due their impeccable phrasing, sublime expression and admirable phrasing. (We should remind the case of the Abreu brothers in the Seventies as other emblematic example of familiar ensembles) This special circumstance has allowed them to achieve a very high place in guitar' s world.
5-0 out of 5 stars LOS ROMEROS TO PERFORM WITH THE EDISON SYMPHONY AT THE STATE THEATRE IN NJ
THIS IS A GREAT CD! COME SEE THE LOS ROMEROS THE ROYAL FAMILY OF THE GUITAR PERFORM LIVE WITH THE EDISON SYMPHONY ON FEBRUARY 19, 2006, AT THE STATE THEATRE IN NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ 2:00 P.M.
2-0 out of 5 stars Content is a disppointment
While Los Romeros had a valid claim to the record's title, and their playing was generally flawless, I found this disk to be a disappointing collection. I thought I was going to hear the unique sound of a four high caliber guitarists playing as a quartet. Its actually a collection of solos, some duets, with only a couple pieces where its evident 3 or more are playing. And, while the performances were technically excellent, most seemed somewhat flat and lacked the personality expected of the classical guitar. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Ravel omnium gatherum in Decca's best sound
Dutoit was Decca's house conductor of French music for almost two decades, and here is gathered at budget price all the significant orchestral works as well as the two piano concertos. The spledid sonics and Dutoit's reputation will probably be enough to attract listeners who want everything from one conductor, but to my ears none of these performances rises to the very highest level.

Very nice set of CD's, very beatiful and relaxing, but don't pay $27, get it for $9 at Sam's Club. I know this will be censored but come on, how can you guys charge those saps that much! Amazon should try to find the best price for its customers, even if it sends them to different vendors. Censoring this message is a crime, DON'T DO IT. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, moving music! You'll recognize many of the pieces
John Cheng's review, below, said it's "an undeniable bargain," and I whole heartedly agree! I especially LOVE Volume 5. I have a Typing/Resume business, and I listen to Volume 5 ALL the time on my computer while I'm doing my work. It inspires me to be creative and calms me down when I'm stressed. Read more
