5-0 out of 5 stars Flawless and moving
This was the recording that introduced me to Beethoven's 5th Piano Concerto, making me wonder how I had missed it in all my years (15+) of listening to classical music. I listened to my cassette until it was completely ruined. Although I have yet to hear other renditions of this piece, I can compare it to my other Beethoven symphonies (among others). In that light, I find this particular recording to be flawless. The piano is fluid and seems to dance with the orchestra, and it reminds me of watching a pair of excellent dancers--you watch one, then the other, then back, and marvel. It's the same with this piece. It has no hiccups, no glitches.

5-0 out of 5 stars Grandioso...
Beethoven escribio este grandioso concierto, una joya musical.
5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Performance
I have listened to many performances and recordings of this beloved concerto and this one, in my opinion, always ends up on top. It defines musical perfection. The majesty of the Emperor, its delicacy, its sweetness, its passion are all captured with such clarity it is impossible to listen to this performance without getting caught up in the emotions of this great concerto. If one has to choose which performance to get, this should be number one! The quality of this recording is also excellent. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars NOT OF THIS WORLD
Tabula Rasa: Silentium : This music is not of this world.I worship/pray in silence while driving with this music on with a palm facing the windshield. The haunting, surreal background...the two main violins mournfully cries out aloud...yet so beautiful...my heart cries with them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Spare brilliance
Spending a lot of words describing Prt's music seems like defeating the purpose. It is transcendent, haunting, solemn, quiet, and all the other things the other reviewers say.I view it, stylistically, as somewhere between the minimalism of Glass et al, and the ambient textures of Steve Roach -- if that description makes any sense.I find myself a little more at home with his instrumental pieces than his choral work, but that's just personal preference.5-0 out of 5 stars Magnificat: Magnificent!

Editorial Review

So much truly boring ambient music has been made since Brian Eno coined the phrase in the mid 1970s that it's sometimes hard to remember this can truly be a vibrant music that's, you know, musical. And while there are some clicky and smeared sounds courtesy of Mr. Eno that can only result from modern computer software, this album is a return to 1975's lush, pastoral and excellent Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Back in form, and brilliantly.
Whoosh! It's been, wha...30 years since the wonderful two LP's "No Pussyfooting" and "Evening Star" by this pathbreaking duo of Fripp and Eno.Since then we have long hoped for more...more...from these two incredible genii of ambient-electronic music.Well, in 1994 Caroline released "The Essential Fripp And Eno" which had both LP's except for some reason they left out Side 2 of "Evening Star", "An Index Of Metals", but included 4 new tracks "Healthy Colours".Nice stuff, but not what we'd've expected.Anyhoo...here's a wonderful new selection of seven mid-size (5-9 minute) tracks of very atmospheric guitar-synthesizer, sampled synth, who-knows-what-studio-wizardry.Fripp proves to be still a very formidable guitarist, playing meltingly beautiful solos over Eno's very advanced and gorgeous electronic backings. Two tracks have notably catchy backbeats, but the others are mostly airy-ambient cloud-musics of beautiful depth and range.Let us hope that these two top-notch brilliant British musicians don't wait another 30 years to add another chapter to their output!
5-0 out of 5 stars lord, brilliant
the most natural step they could make as a duo, this far in the future. you wonder, do eno and fripp hang out even when they're not creating a once in a billion year collaboration!? fripp. eno. eno. fripp. god bless em. no, i don't say god bless em. other reviewers say god bless em. way better than me.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Truly Remarkable CD!
This is Eno's best work ever and the the most interesting work we have heard from Fripp in many years. The combined talents of Fripp and Eno easily outdo any solo work either have done up to the present. Where have these guys been all this time!!This is an updated, reconsidered,teched-out Fripp and Eno for the new millenium and beyond! (Think of all the stunning world music, rock and avant garde that has passed under the bridge since their last album together!) Best of the 'Three' and a masterwork of the genre! 5-0 out of 5 stars one 3rd of the greatest album of all time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
this is the 1st ever musical geniuses slow collection.it was designed by a scientist who recognized musics power on the mind and harnessed it.this album has been proven to stimulate the same part of the brain that relaxes you.or for you brainy types,it gets your dopamine flowing.then theres the fact that this music is like pure ear sweetness.it will send all your nuerons off to dreamland and you will feel a dramatic physical change.my favorite song on this one is the violin concerto.extremely relaxing and great for the soul.everybody with anything from a cramp to cancer should put this one on.besides all that, its exquisitely beautiful youll fall instantly in love!an abselute tresure and blessing to music and the world!

4-0 out of 5 stars Music for concentration and focus
I first read the research on the positive effects of classical music at 60 beats per minute many years ago. With no commercial options available then, I made my own tape from excerpts of world class recordings I own, largely of Mozart. I rarely tolerate background music while I work because it distracts and diffuses focus. The slow Mozart movements have an astonishingly opposite and positive effect, enhancing concentration and mental clarity. For listening pleasure, I prefer the complete works with all movements, as a prior reviewer noted. However, for calmed focus and concentration, by removing the alternate movements this recording serves that purpose with excellence.3-0 out of 5 stars good news, bad news
Good news:contains famous works of Mozart for a very small cost. The music is eloquent and perhaps stimulates the brain with the Mozart effect. It is definitly good to listen while commuting and stuck an a traffic jam. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars beautiful reflections
Having just returned to England after a long spell living in Spain I was searching for an evocative suite of Spanish guitar music to accompany my extensive array of photographic studies. Being familiar with the work 'Recuerdos de la Alhambra' I was immediately attracted to this compilation: 'Reflections of Spain'. The music was a revelation. David Russel made the guitar sing lyrically, recalling many bitter sweet moments of life in Iberia. The light and shade of the choices included covered such a broad scope as to fit my purpose exactly and give enjoyment better than I could have hoped for.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best
This is the best Spanish guitar CDs that I have found.Even with "Essential Guitar: 33 Guitar Masterpieces" having more tracks and two CDs, this is better material.I am not saying that "33 Guitar Masterpiece" was bad, I actually rate it second. No need to skip through "Reflections" like many other compilations of this mixed type CD.The quaility is crisp but lower overall peak (loudness) sound compared to some of my other CDs.Read reviews of other CDs of this type because there is many that have substandard recording measures.I believe this is a must for the any guitar lover!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Yet another Spanish guitar music....

5-0 out of 5 stars A Noble Performance
I have listened to numerous renditions by different performing artists, for several years, of both Water Music and Music for the Royal Fireworks. The first time I listened to this CD played by the Academy of Ancient Music I felt I was listening to a high class performance. There is something about the clear sound of the instruments and the tempo and dedication to detail that this group of artists put into its performance that it really inspires me into the wonderful world of the baroque classical music and somehow it transports me to the time when Handel himself was composing and directing these beautiful masterpieces. And the bonus is also the beautifully played Duo A Cori concertos. I recommend it!

4-0 out of 5 stars Towards the higher end of the pack
Reading the liner notes, I am reminded that the occasion for which the water music originally was composed was royal river outing that started in the evening and lasted until 4:00 AM (Take THAT you modern clubhoppers!). The music was played three times through the course of this trip. I doubt there were many teetotallers. Soo...royal oarsmen, wine goblets overflowing with the best claret, tipsy nobleman and...hey! don't hit that river barge! Watch where you're goin' mate!3-0 out of 5 stars Recommendable.
I have recently returned to these two CDs (which I bought and listened to for a while some three years ago) and found that they were not quite as bad as I remembered. The tempi are very well sprung, the spirits are high and the "Water Music" in particular is played with some delicacy and finesse (which I hardly take for granted from Hogwood's early recordings). The roughness of the result is mainly due the scratchy tone of the strings and inaccurate tuning of the horns.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A poetic performance of a dramatic work
The problem with Perlman's Bruch concerto version is precisely that...is perfect!, he makes a lyrical or poetic version in a concerto that is more a dramatic piece than a poetic work, and conductor Bernard Haitink is a correct but also a moderate or austere conductor. But in my opinion Bruch's concerto requires passion, fire, emotion, and because of that I prefer Salvatore Accardo-Kurt Masur version with the Gewandhaus Orch. in Philips, now edited in "eloquence" a bargain collection from Universal. Other excellent versions are Arthur Grumiaux-Heinz Wallberg performance with the Philharmonia Orch., and legendary Oistrach-von Matacic version. In Mendelssohn's concerto is also preferable the Christian Ferras-Constantin Silvestri version with the Philharmonia Orch., a 1958 remastered recording, reedited in ROYAL CLASSICS, with an exceptional Beethoven's violin concerto version with the Royal Philharmonic Orch. conducted by the famous conductor Malcolm Sargent, or Nathan Milstein-Abbado version conducting Vienna Philharmonic Orch. in DG. Oscar Olavarra A.

This CD is excellent, as the other reviewers have said. Two of my favorite violin concertos, played sensitively and brilliantly by the masters. It makes for a very passionate, flooring bit of music.

5-0 out of 5 stars Most Chosen Selections
As a wedding officiant, my wife and I are often asked to assist the couple with other services for their ceremony, such as music. For this, we have a very large selection in our music library to choose from. We have put together a catalog of cd's that we loan out to the couple for their review, and most often, their selections come from BRIDE'S GUIDE TO WEDDING MUSIC.
4-0 out of 5 stars Another Great Reference CD
This is a great compilation, CD, along with Bride's Guide to Wedding Music Volume 2, to use as a reference for some of the more popular wedding songs; just about everything on here is standard fare for weddings. All of the musicians are generally superb, and the sound quality is very good. However, this is most useful if you are playing the CD at your wedding, or using it as a reference CD to talk over potential music selections with an organist, a string quartet, etc. Like my review for Volume 2, I only gave it four stars based on practicality, not on quality. If it were just quality, I would give it five stars. I purchased this CD since I am in the process of making my own wedding CD (I am a professional, freelance violinist), and this was nice to listen to, even just as background music for dinner. BTW: beware of reviewers who don't use their names, especially "A music fan." This is most likely the producer of the "Wedding Traditions" CD and he slanders other CDs so his will look better. You'd think that in the wedding music business people would have better ethics, but unfortunately, that's not always the case. The best advice I can give, as a classical musician myself, if to take time to listen to the sound clips, and if possible, try to find them on iTunes where they might sound higher quality. This is the only real way of knowing whether the CD is right for you.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Nice CD

Editorial Review

If it is possible to play the piano charismatically, then that is what Lang Lang does. His total identification with each piece gives his playing a warmth, a personal touch, that is unique. His performance of Mozart's K. 330 is ideally classical. The opening movement seems played with the fingers just touching the keys. The big Chopin sonata is given an imposing, dignified reading, and Lang Lang plays the frisky scherzo--the most perky one Chopin ever wrote--with obvious glee. The performance of Schumann's "Kinderszenen" is filled with characterization: dreamy, filled with wonderment ("Curious Story"), wackiness ("Catch me if you can"), and stillness ("Child falling asleep"); Lang Lang manages to avoid affectation throughout. A bonus CD offers Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsody no. 2 in Vladimir Horowitz's arrangement and is dizzying in its virtuosity. This is a must-have; Lang Lang is not being over-hyped. Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Long Long
Chopin' Sonata slow movement is played sooooo slow, I thought there was something wrong with my player. My opinion? Great composers' music should be played more and interpreted less.
5-0 out of 5 stars Gentle, evocative
Pianist Lang Lang "evokes memories of his childhood pianistic explorations", to quote the CD jacket. It's a recital album with all solo piano music, beautifully played. Very nice.

2-0 out of 5 stars Dancing with odd temp
Lang Lang's powerful and fast fingers just do not work for Chopin.Chopin's music is as dedicated as "dancing with soul" for every note.Lang Lang's fingers are just too rude to interpret these subtle notes. For Mazart Concerto, if you have listened to Horowitz, you will be disappointed with Lang Lang's recording too.I don't even want to mention the rest recordings. As I know Lang Lang performs over 120 shows a year.He is talented and successful at his age. Yet he should spend more time on music itself and understand the virtue of difference. Beyond technical fast fingers, expression is all counts at last. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful tribute to the artist
This CD is perfect in my opinion. The recording is perfect, the pitch is perfect, the tempo is perfect, and the track selections are perfect. I think the album samples Beethoven's most remarkable pieces of work from his early years to his death. I have heard many recordings of the Ninth symphony that was just executed poorly; which is a shame because it is such a powerful piece. However, this album does it superbly. Sir Georg Solti and Murray Perahia did an amazing job with this album.
5-0 out of 5 stars Very emotional and moving!!
I am a big fan of classical music. Beethoven, in my opinion, was one of thebest composers, Mozart 1st, Beethoven 2nd, etc. This album is very moving and filled with emotion. I am currently listening to Adagio Cantabile-from Piano Sonata No. 8-from the film album. This piece is so moving and emotional. Another piece was Moonlight Sonata which I especially liked. Beethoven loads this piece with love and emotion for his one true love. In my opinion, Beethoven was the best at writing emotional and moving music. Whenever I listen to his music, I am immersed in a world of emotion and feeling. His music is truly beautiful. Back to the album, Sir Georg Solti really captured Beethoven's genius and devotion to his music in this album. This album really accents the film. You cannot have one, you must have both the film and the soundtrack. This is a must have for classical music/Beethoven fanatics and people who want to get a great summary of Beethoven's genius. BUY THIS!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars good listen, but needs work

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Buy CD!
If you've seen 'Platoon', and 'Lorenzel's Oil', repeatedly hearing the same traumatic music, and want to own it to your music library, this would be the definite CD to buy. A tiny bit slower than what's heard on the screen, but with more emotive sounds on the strings, the New York Phil under Bernstein's baton would surely put you to tears for sure. I claim this is one of the best recording of Barber's Adagio for Strings (lined with Lenny's performance with the LA Phil on DG).
5-0 out of 5 stars Bernstein + Barber "Adagio" = Best
I love Barber's "Adagio for Strings" -- the mood, the emotion, the pace. However, it is trounced by most beginning conductors. I like the slower paced (around 10 minutes) renditions. This performance is my favorite, but the transfer to CD is not the very best (the LP seemed better on my high-end system). I also like Bernstein with Los Angeles (the recording is better, but the performance is not quite as good). I wish this recording would be remastered with 20-bit or HDCD. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Decca has gotten around the perennial problem of filling Mozart Piano Concerto CDs by splitting No. 25 between two discs, giving us 155 minutes of Mozart for the price of a single top-line CD. The performances are top-line, too, if you like big-orchestra Mozart. Ashkenazy performs this music in a public, large-auditorium style, without the intimacy or niceties we hear from period instruments or from such pianists as Richard Goode and Mitsuko Uchida. His own cadenzas for three of the concertos are also very extroverted--and, alas, not very imaginative. Also, there are a few moments when the orchestra might have benefited from a firmer hand on the tiller than the pianist-conductor can provide. Overall, though, these are dramatic, involving Mozart performances, even if their style belongs more to the past than to the present.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Satisfying, "old-school" Mozart
Vladimir Ashkenazy's complete cycle of Mozart piano concertos was originally issued in the late 70s-early 80s, and holds up well, on the evidence of this bargain-priced 2-CD set of five of the most famous of these works. The pianist's approach tends toward the large-scale and deliberate. This works particularly well in the majestic C major Concerto K. 503 (one is made aware of how this work influenced Beethoven's own G major Concerto) and the tragic C minor work, K. 491. He is supported by beautiful playing from the Philharmonia Orchestra, whose strings lend a magical sheen to the Romantic melodies of the famous "Elvira Madigan" slow movement of K. 467. Ashkenasy's playing is fittingly sparkling in passagework and as transparent as a modern Steinway concert grand can be. By today's standards of historical performance the orchestra is large, some of the slow movements could have used a bit more ornamentation, and the pianist's own cadenzas to K. 467, 491 and 503 wander a bit too far afield harmonically; but these are small quibbles in otherwise enjoyable performances.

3-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good
I grew up listening to Rudolph Serkin play these pieces. He will always be the gold standard on Mozart piano concertos as far as I'm concerned. I gave this album 3 stars instead of 4 solely for Ashkenazy's weak play on the 3rd movement of the 20th Concerto. It didn't have the passion or fire I've come to expect from that movement. In fact, me personally, I think the whole set lacks a certain fire. I don't claim to be an expert, but his work on Mozart is nowhere near as good as his work on Beethoven. And other masters are much better at Mozart, in my opinion.

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT SELECTION AND INTERPRETATIONS
I received this 2 cd set as a gift and have played it many times - especially the slow movements which are so ethereal and soul-wrenching - and notably Vladimir Ashkenazy's interpretations of the concertos numbers 23, 24, and 20.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars AN OPERA OPUS THAT'S A MUST!
Oh, such letter-perfect perfection! This marvel features a two-hour-plus showcase of well-known arias from "Cosi Fan Tuti," "Aida," "Carmen," "Madame Butterfly" and "The Barber of Seville." It also comes with a book --- 762 pages of remarkable facts, figures and illustrations.Encore!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best
This is, by far, the best introduction to opera on the market. It also contains some gem performances for anyone who already has a serious opera collection. Several tracks on this collection of mostly Eastern European singers rival those of their Western counterparts. This is a collection for EVERYONE - from the opera novice to the person who has long collected all the major Western stars. At this price, it's the best opera bargain in the world. GET IT NOW!!! Thank you, Naxos! I hope that some of these Eastern European singers at last get the attention they deserve.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb Modestly Priced Favorite Arias Collection!!!
I received this as my 20th birthday gift from my bestfriend and I was amazed at the quality and the content of this CD. Some of the arias which I am immensely fond of are included, i.e. "Habanera" from Bizet's "Carmen." And who would have guessed that the soprano on track 10 performing Queen of the Night's Aria from Mozart's "Die Zauberflote" was none other than Hellen Kwon? Amazing!Read more

Editorial Review

Rodrigo's two "greatest hits," these works for guitar and orchestra made a convenient and frequent LP coupling, but they are a skimpy CD program. One recommendable feature of this CD is the inclusion of two lovely works for solo guitar along with an equally lovely piece for violin and orchestra. Rodrigo deserves to be more than a two-hit wonder, and bravo to Philips for exposing a little more of his music like this. Still, the performances of the "hits" are our major concern here. Pepe Romero plays with complete command of the music, and in the affecting slow movement of the "Concierto" (composed, as we learned only after his death, to mourn the loss of a child who died at birth), he plays his heart out. Marriner and the not so small orchestra give outstandingly crisp and sensitive support, and the recording manages the difficult feat of balancing guitar and orchestra so that the solo instrument remains audible without sounding artificially boosted. There are many fine versions of the concertos on CD, including one by Pepe's brother Angel, several by John Williams, and one by Manuel Barrueco with Placido Domingo conducting. But this Philips disc is as good as any and does have the advantage of the extra music. Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Do not buy it
Horrible composition, make-no-sense musical arrangement, lack of harmony, sectional, not "together". Buy another Concierto de Aranjuez, not this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars The music will take you away!
Try this for a break from bland music.Play in your car while driving to work. The last few minutes of track 2 while bring joy to your heart and tears to your eyes!

5-0 out of 5 stars tremendous recordings of some favorites and some less well-known works
What a recording. For years I liked both the efforts of Williams/Ormandy (live performance) and Parkening with the RPO. But this is my favorite recording now, hands down. The sonics are top-notch as compared with those two ADD selections, and there is more less well-known Rodrigo that is equally lovely. Romero's interpretations just seem more passionate, which seems necessary for these works, in particular the slow movement of the Concierto de Aranjuez.

5-0 out of 5 stars I would give it more than 5 stars....
I had this CD when my daughter was born 5 years ago, and it gave us such a soothing environment in which to bond during quiet times. We also put it on shortly before we'd put her down to sleep, and by 6 weeks she was sleeping through the night in her own crib.I think it was her sanctuary, and the music helped her feel comforted. We've since then completely worn out the CD (she listened to it through her 3rd year), and will have to buy a new one for our next little addition (coming soon!). I found it on this site and just listened to the samples from each track.Aahhh... very soothing for Mommy, too!
5-0 out of 5 stars Great CD: soothing music by best performers. Worth every penny.
I listened to this CD countless times ever since I first bought it from BMG music service back in 1997.Compositions of this CD are popular classical hits. That is, you will likely recognize at least some of them if you listen to the sampler.
5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic sleep time music
Not only does our baby love this music, but it is beautiful for us adults to listen to as well. There are 24 tunes, all strictly instumental except the last one. It runs over an hour and does not have any major "loud spots" despite a very nice variety of music. Read more

There's something for every Tchaikovsky lover on this disc. From Swan Lake to Onegin, many of Tchaikovsky's most-known melodies are on this disc. I'd have preferred more than an excerpt of the first movement of Piano Concerto No. 1, but this disc is a great introduction to Tchaikovsky's works. ... Read more

I heard this album for the first time at a restuarant in Florenceduringmy trip to Italy. I was surprised it was from the US beacause it hascaptured the very soul of Italy. After 7 years it has remained my favoriteof all Puccini cds I own. I especially like the fact that it is instumentaland can be played for many occassions. It never fails to stir thewanderlust for a trip back to Italy! A must for every romantic!

5-0 out of 5 stars Heavenly.
That is how I describe Maurice Andre's sound. So smooth and suave, and accurate every time. The Michael Haydn Concerto In D is one of the most impressive trumpet works ever recorded.Andre does it better than anyone else ever did, if you ask me.He also takes on J.S. Bach's "Brandenburg Concerto No. 2" and the results are majestic. The essential Joseph Haydn Trumpet Concerto is on here as well, a piece in which Andre plays an especially stunning cadenza on the first movement. The Telemann, Tartini, Handel, Vivaldi and Marcello are all impeccably played.Maurice Andre was the second or third trumpet player I started listening to after Miles Davis.I also discovered Clifford Brown around then, back in 6th grade.Since then, they have all remained in my list of all-time favorite trumpet players and musicians.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have album!
The incredible playing of Maurice Andre fills up all two of these cds. From the incredible brandenberg reading to the Cimarosa. This album from start to finish is a text book on beauty, style, phrasing, and how to play the trumpet. Andre is a true master of the trumpet and even more a true master musician.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pyrotechnics
Maurice Andr is one of those people whom one suspects isn't quite human like the rest of us (Michala Petri is another). To anyone who has ever struggled to get as much as a parp or a toot out of a trumpet, the astounding technical facility and the pure, clear, pitch-perfect sound and wonderful tone of an Andr is a revelation that some people are indeed more equal than others. This collection represents Andr in his prime (he's now sadly semi-retired) and he does a wonderful job. Many of these works are not originally for trumpet, and only a modern piccolo valved trumpet allows them to be played. Nevertheless, they come up shining. ... Read more
