5-0 out of 5 stars Pleasently Suprised
I am a new fan to Sarah Brightman, this is the first CD I have purchased, I am delighted to say I LOVE IT,, her voice is haunting and the lyrics are amazing... I am now a Sarah Brightman FAN... Great CD I higly recommend it!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this !
This is an amazing cd. Sarah Brightman is a great vocalist, who already is a household name in classical music. There are good songs and I finally found the song i was looking for- from the Secret Garden "Anytime, Anywhere." It's an amazing song and alsoAva Maria. A good song. Some other opera singers don't really know how to make their voices pure... as they grow up into woman. But, Sarah has accomplished this role in making her voice still pure, but amazing.

3-0 out of 5 stars Fails to impress...
Now I'm as much a Sarah Brightman fan as the next guy; thought she was terrific vocally as "Phantom"'s Christine.Listening to this CD helps me to remember that was *20* years ago. What Sarah lacks in vocal control and tonality she makes up for in breathiness and her infamous "swooping" up into high notes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Like Floating On A Cloud
My first real appreciation of this sound was from watching the film "Slaughterhouse Five" in the theater, back in the '70s. That soundtrack was just a taste of what you get with this recording. My family pops this CD in the car stereo on long trips, and glide down the highway to some original smooth grooves. Helps the miles pass swiftly. Music for the soul.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bach
Surely you don't need me to review the guy. You know who he is, you've heard his music, and I hope you own some. So let me turn the podium over to a cat named Picasso, and you can read into that whatever you wish. She's in a chair, near the CD player. She has entered the room specifically for the music. Her eyes are squinted, almost but not quite shut, little face concentrating on just how contented those sounds make her feel. Nobody can say why they move her so, any more than we can say why they move us so. If we knew the answer to that one, we'd copy the guy. But anyway, she loves the music, and don't you dare make a sound such as squeaking your computer chair. If you do, her golden orbs will open, fix upon your face, and shame you. Yes they will. But if you are quiet long enough, you can watch a little calico sleep, with the very same sweet kitten face that drew you to her five years ago. Bach is gooooood.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good CD, especially for novices
I was looking for a recommended Bach CD - certain music by a certain orchestra - and stumbled on this.It is an excellent choice for a new library.I think when there was more than one movement to a piece, it would have made more sense to go ahead and keep the movements together instead of separating them, but a novice listener would not notice.A great way to become exposed to a great composer. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars excellent guitar performances
Outstanding guitar performances. I gave it only 4 stars because I do not personally like some of the compositions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential Guitar...
Up until this collection, I'd never heard the "Cavatina" played in the Deer Hunter movie. After hearing it, I could play it all day and not tire of it!It moves me that much, considering that it's almost "not" a classical guitar selection. The rest of the music is first rate! Excellent playing, but the "Cavatina..."
5-0 out of 5 stars Lives up to its Name!
If you only bought this double CD set, you'd have a good starter collection of classical guitar music. It includes most of the standards, as well as rarer pieces. In addition to the many solo pieces, there are several excerpts from orchestral works, with Rodrigo's indispensible Adagio from "Concierto de Aranjuez" topping the list. There are also several flamenco numbers included, complete with heel taps and castanets.

4-0 out of 5 stars a tribute to American originals
John Adams revels in being an American composer, and the two works presented here are each tributes to American mavericks.
5-0 out of 5 stars Difficult to not gush
I was fortunate enough to attend a live performance of "Dharma" at the Walt Disney Concert Hall in 2005, a little less than 2 years after it's first performance. It is a thrilling experience to see and hear this work live. There was an electricity in the air throughout the entire performance. Anyone who has the opportunity to attend a concert of this music should not miss it. But the good news is that for everyone who can't make it to a concert this recording does the piece justice (as much is possible for a CD).
5-0 out of 5 stars 2 great works, but 2 discs?
I have to say I was getting worried that John Adams was becoming a has-been.El Nino's first half was much better than the second, I didn't particularly like Transmigration and I defy anyone to listen to his 2001 piano work American Berserk and tell me it's any good. But after this release, I stand humbly corrected -- he's still, in my opinion, America's, if not the world's, best living composer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun exposure to classical music
I bought Beethoven's Wig 1 and 2 last year, and my children (ages 6 and 10) begged me to get this one!Richard Perlmutter's voice is a little nasal (every once in a while you're reminded of Barney sing-a-longs) but the other voices that are on the CD are nice. This is an awesome way to familiarize children with classical music themes.I'm hoping that as my children grow up, they will be attracted to some classical music because they will have some familiar melodies in their memory banks.I highly recommend this CD to anyone with young children.

5-0 out of 5 stars The appeal of this CD can't be exaggerated
Sometimes pretentious, sometimes downright ridiculous products promising to expose our children to classical music can be as obnoxious as they are ubiquitous. Noise-making machines imitating Mozart do not a classical music lover make, particularly when it comes to plastic devices that light up and play unrecognizable sound.
5-0 out of 5 stars Warning:the fun is contagious!
For those of you familiar with Beethoven's Wig 1 and 2, you already know to expect the unexpected from lyric genius Richard Perlmutter and his very talented Beethoven's Wig crew. They have single-handedly delivered the classical music repertoire to millions of young children in the most innovative, engaging way - marrying the best of the classical repertoire to witty, fun lyrics for children (and adults!) that engage, entertain, and make the music unforgettable with the charming voice of Perlmutter himself and an accomplished operatic ensemble of singers. While so many artists struggle to follow up two gigantic successes with a third that doesn't disappoint, Beethoven's Wig 3 masterfully and refreshingly follows its own act with a new twist on the recipe this time:showcasing individual instruments in the orchestra, appreciating the uniqueness of each, and marrying them to short lyrical stories that are making my nephews and nieces laugh out loud while they learn (and while their parents and grandparents chuckle along -- and learn a few things too). The CD booklet contains not only the illustrated stories, but also interesting and fun questions about classical music and different orchestral instruments.I can really see why Beethoven's Wig has won so many children's music awards - there's nothing else like it, kids adore it, and parents feel great about knowing their children are developing a life-long love and appreciation for classical music at an early age. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A perfectly surreal match for a fairly surreal movie
Jean-Michel Bernard is the man behind the music for this, the music of the latest Michael Gondry movie ("Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind"). I had never heard of him before, but he happens to have a few movie scores under his belt, Gondry's "Human Nature" (2001) among them, along with a few other albums.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Recording I've Ever Heard
I've listened to Handels's Messiah my entire life, so I'm very picky. I can honestly say this is the best recording I've ever heard.

5-0 out of 5 stars Messiah - complete traditional
It is the traditional version of the Messiah and includes all parts - even the songs some people would find obscure. Very well done. Sounds inspiring and wonderful.

4-0 out of 5 stars Genuinely Wonderful
This recording of Handel's Messiah showcases Felicity Lott, whose voice has an wonderfully warm and rich quality (unusual for a soprano) -- particularly on "I Know That My Redeemer Liveth," a song with which I am tolerably familiar as a soprano soloist. In fact, the entire recording's tone resonates with warmth. The only fault lies in the fact that #34-37 are omitted, including one of my favorite pieces, "And He Shall Purify;" hence four stars instead of five. But leaving aside that omission, the orchestral performance is outstanding, the chorus is very good, and the soloists, especially Ms. Lott, are delightful. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great a classic
Totally enjoyable. After a few listens you can't help but sing along.

5-0 out of 5 stars Liked the movie, loved the songs!
Aside from the fact that I loved the movie, most of that came from loving the songs on the movie. I got to a place where I wanted to hear them a lot, but didn't want to skip around on the movie to find the song I wanted to hear. So I bought this soundtrack. It was well worth it.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent overall
The "Fiddler on the Roof" film has a terrific reputation, and deservedly so-the casting was excellent, and it shines through on this recording, both in subtle nuances and changes and in larger, more noticeable things, such as added musical numbers. At a couple points I was disappointed at the omissions of some parts-a handful of lines scattered through, as well as a number from the original, "The Rumor"-but those weaknesses aren't sufficient to lower the rating I give it. ... Not content with the simplistic "crossover" formula, superstar tenor Andrea Bocelli has been pursuing alternative paths since he emerged as a vocal phenomenon in the mid-1990s: operatic classics and contemporary popular song. There is no other voice quite like Andrea's voice.I keep listening to this CD over and over as some of the songs just touch my heart, both with his voice and the written arrangements. One of my very favorites from Andrea. He has the same qualities to his voice with popular songs as he does with opera. When following the English translations in the CD case, the message of each song becomes very clear through the inflections and tonal quality of his voice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for Family listening!
I used this DVD to teach the kids a song from Vacation bible school, and had a bunch of people ask me where I bought it.It was just what I needed.

2-0 out of 5 stars BEFORE it was a musical...
BEFORE it was a musical it was a cantata with orchestra and children's choir. Slicked, glossed, and cheesy, the broadway versions all fall short of the original, concise masterpiece recorded on the ONE AND ONLY ORIGINAL version alas, out of print and available only on vinyl. As overblown broadway versions go, this 1992 version may be the best. But, for those of us who grew up listening to the original, the broadway versions do nothing but disappoint. The Joseph Consortium version of the original cantata recording included Tim Rice singing the role of Pharoah and was released by Scepter Records. Where the rights may be now for re-release, who knows?

Over the years, I have tried in vain to purchase the "real" original version.. Yes, Donny Osmond is decent and all.. I grew up watching him and his family on tv.. But concerning this title, they try to pass off the various versions on this site and in stores as "The Original Version".. It's not... I have the "Real" Original version on vinyl.. I've been looking to replace it on CD..

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Recording I Have Ever Heard
The orchestrations are breathtaking. The cast members act, sing, and play instruments! What talent! Michael Cerveris is phenomenal! Patti LuPone is amusing and wonderful as always as Sweeney's pie shop sweetie. Manoel Felciano is heartbreaking as Tobey, performing the best rendition of "Not While I'm Around" that i have ever heard. Lauren Molina is equally talented as she brings a delicate, yet exotic soprano to the beautiful character of Joanna. I am so happy that i had the pleasure of seeing this in New York and meeting this ever-so-talented cast. How come they left out some of the dialogue/music towards the end? They did not include the Parlor Songs or Tobey in the bakehouse on this recording. Oh well, the music they do give us is positively spectaculer. I love Sweeney Todd!!!!!

3-0 out of 5 stars Not quite right
This is a very uneven recording. I have not seen this production, and am a big fan of the original produciton and album. I think a minimalist produciton can work, and I quite like the musical arrangements which tend to allow the voices to stand out. Sweeney himself is remarkable. Most of the rest of the cast does well too. But Lupone disappoints as Mrs. Lovett -- she sounds flat and monotonic. Bamford also sounds like he is on way too strong medication. And what's with a female Pirelli?
5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect.
Sweeney Todd is the greatest musical that has ever been made, this cast is the best that I've ever heard, Sondheim is the greatest lyricist and composer of musical theatre, and the revival production on Broadway was the single greatest thing I've seen on Broadway in the past 10 years. Cerveris owns the role of Sweeney, it really is going to be the crowning achievment in his impressive career, he's that good in it. Lupone is a goddess of musical theatre as usual, and supporting players like Alex Gemignani and Mano Felciano are standouts among an exceptionally talented cast.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very beautiful renditions of film themes...
I was especially pleased to hear her perform versions of several film themes.Track 9, based on the cue "Rupert Bear" from Gabriel Yared's score for "The English Patient", and Track 10, based on the cue "On Earth As It Is in Heaven" from Ennio Morricone's score for "The Mission".Being both a fan of film scores and Sarah Brightman, these lovely tracks stand as my favorites from "Eden".

5-0 out of 5 stars Quite possibly Brightman's best
Having only discovered the world of classical crossover this year, it wasn't long before Sarah Brightman, the English soprano who crashed the scene with her career defining performance in Llyod Weber's "The Phantom Of The Opera," registered under my radar.

This recording was produced more than 40 years ago, only in mono, but from the day it was released it was a deserved phenomenon. It out-grossed the mega-hit show for months, and it still holds the record for the most weeks as a Billboard Top 40 album: 292. The reasons are many. Start with the 20-year-old Julie Andrews in peak voice, singing no fewer than eight sensational Lerner and Loewe songs, soaring most memorably to high C in "I Could Have Danced All Night." Rex Harrison perfected the art of talk-singing in a clutch of equally captivating numbers written especially for his voice, of which the most indelibly delivered is "I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face." And Stanley Holloway brought the best English music-hall style to an eager American audience with "A Little Bit of Luck" and "Get Me to the Church on Time." There were no scene-changers in Frederick Loewe's best score, and Alan Jay Lerner managed to fashion his libretto and lyrics so close to the language of George Bernard Shaw (on whose play Read more

I really don't like show tunes that much.I listen to rock, blues, some jazz and I have a few classical favorites, but I'm not a show tune person. So, I'm crankin' my vinyl LP version of this very recording right now and I'm loving it (or lovering it) despite myself!

My family had this as an LP when I was young.Great performances!Too bad Julie Andrews was not in the movie.

5-0 out of 5 stars Still the Best
What can you say about MFL that hasn't already been said. Sublime, perfect, classic. This is still the definitive recording of the show, and no one has ever come close to the original cast. Sadly, while the movie is wonderful, had Warner Bros. used Andrew's it might have been one of the greatest film musicals of all time. And while Audrey Hepburn gamely gives it her all, Andrew's had clearly made Eliza Doolittle her own, and she would have been uncomparable on film, and raised the level of the entire movie. Well, the rest is history, Andrews went on to be one of the biggest movie stars of the 60's.

[...] Honestly, it isn't THAT THAT great, but its good enough for its price. I'd say that your $ pays off, for a while. I've noticed how after a long time, it gets aggrivating at times. No harm meant, "Beethoven lover". I just mean don't plunge into this cd with all the hopes in the world. Besides, it's just my opinion, so you may like it more than me. All i can say is; a) listen to some samples before you buy, b)know this is not REALLY the great Beethoven himself, and c) enjoy YOUR music, whatever it may be.

2-0 out of 5 stars Great Price...Not so good itself
This a great priced cd, but the content is why it is so cheap. It's a true-amateur album. Beethoven Lover is over her/his head. This is the real world, not a fantasy-everyone-likes-every-type-of-music world. Deal with it and agree with me. It isn't so great.

Wow! This is really good. I can't believe it's not beethoven himself playing! I really recommend it to anyone who's a Beethoven lover like me! Please, I really need to know if you agree with me... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Too beatiful for words
I'm from the Netherlands, and just got back from my trip to NYC. I saw the show twice, both times at the first row (had to stand in line for six hours both times) and I was totally amazed.
5-0 out of 5 stars The color purple
I'd seen the show on broadway and just had to have the cd.it's cheaper on amazon than it is to buy it in new york at the production.

3-0 out of 5 stars Has some great music
I saw "The Color Purple" on a recommendation of a friend and I was presently surprised with the show. The show has some great music (I am here, The Color Purple, Our Prayer, What About Love) but it lacks something. The show feels slow at times and has a tough time picking up steam. The cast is wonderful and extrememy talented but I don't think that the CD really captures the experience of the show in the theater.

Editorial Review

The screenwriting/directing debut of veteran British stage and screen actor Charles Dance tells of a pair of Cornish spinsters (Judi Dench and Maggie Smith) who discover a charismatic young Polish violin virtuoso castaway (Daniel Bruhl) on the beach below their home. The tale leads inexorably to tender romantic conflicts and a warm concert house finale. Composer Nigel Hess masterfully utilizes his background as Music Director and House Composer for the Royal Shakespeare Company to conjure a score that evokes its quiet, emotional dignity via neo-classical orchestral arrangements that feature real life young virtuoso Joshua Bell on solo violin. Hess' intimate original compositions form a virtually seamless tapestry with the story's requisite classical repertory choices, which range fromMassenet and Debussy to Bell's delightful variations on Paganini's "The Carnival of Venice."Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars what a surprise
The movie has a wonderful soundtrack, but not all the songs I loved to hear in this movie, are on the CD. The CD is not bad, but it's not the big thing, I expected to buy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ladies in Lavender
I had planned to see this film when it was showing in the theater but missed it.Only knew that Judy Dench was in it.The film was full of pleasant surprises. The story, the music, the acting (everyone)the fact that Dance was the director and Joshua Bell was the violinist.I listen to the music all the time and plan to see the movie again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simple but endearing theme
I thoroughly enjoyed the movie 'Ladies in Lavender' which spurred me on to buy the soundtrack. Joshua Bell is a talented violinist and, although the music is not complicated, it is endearing. It may not appeal to listeners who have not yet seen the movie. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Awe inspiring!
What can I say that hasn't already been said about Howard Shore's magnificent score for the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy? A soundtrack can define the whole atmosphere of a film, and this fully orchestrated work certainly does that with sweep, splendor and wonder, alternately humanizing (hobbit-izing?) the characters, imbuing the landscape with magic and capturing the world-shaking impact of events of mythic proportions. And this was no easy task considering the iconoclastic status of the story and the superb quality of Peter Jackson's filmmaking. This is a truly a soundtrack for the ages--a fitting accompaniment to a film for the ages! Every aspect of life, from the extreme to the mundane, is captured in this music. Listening to it can make every remembered moment of the movie come alive again in your mind, from the most horrific battle to the smallest moment of humor or kindness. I think this first one is my favorite of the three "Lord of the Rings" soundtracks. I enj
