5-0 out of 5 stars An Ode to Beauty and Artistry (Lorraine Hunt-Lieberson, 1954-2006)
I've been meaning to review this album for the longest time, but haven't because of my committments at work and other things.Lieberson's voice, in my opinion, is one of the most beautiful instruments of our generation. It is, unlike a certain Renaaay who tries to sing anything and everything as a huge, incoherent slur, a very beautifully and artistically sung Handel recital. The tone is simply magnificent! And no other Handelian artist has connected her singing of the role with a dramatic sense that is so acute as her performances of the role.
5-0 out of 5 stars subtle beauty
I have had this CD for several years now, and also all of the CDs from which these arias are drawn. What a great album; I would not be without it.Ms. Hunt (now Hunt Lieberson) has the voice, phrasing, discipline...the inner understanding of this music. She's "connected" on almost every piece here. 'Angels Bright and Fair' is a particular standout in my view; but almost certainly, if you are a lover of Handel's music, you will find something special here. Her soprano to mezzo soprano on this CD was a subtle and extraordinary voice for performing these pieces.

5-0 out of 5 stars Handel at his best
Of all the wonderful (and not so wonderfil) Handel CDs Iown, this is the one I return to over and over. The combination of musicianship, beauty of voice, and complete dramatic conviction makes this collection of (generally) very obscure arias a pleasure that intensifies with repeated hearing. Among the highlights: "Vieni o figlio" (from Ottone) which becomes, with Hunt's interpretation, one of the truly great arias of loss, a precursor of the great Romantic standards; "Angels, Ever Bright and Fair" (from Theodora), with unbelievable diction and sweetness, making Engish sound as beautiful as Itaian; and "Qual nave" (from Radamisto), again a miracle of delicate phrasing and conveyed deep feeling. But Hunt finds real meaning in all the songs -- she's never just vocalizing. Best of all is the way she manages to intensify meaning in the da capo section without excessive decoration. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Anna Magdalena Notebook-- a treasure trove of Baroque music
This is music for contemplating number and time and not realize you are doing that. These pieces from Anna Magdalena Bach's notebook are a significant part of the history of western culture, and the music is brilliant, lucid, and passionate. Just as, I suppose, Bach's wife was. Played on harpsichord and clavichord, the work-- not all by Bach-- seems rigourously, mysteriously modern, and the anonymous "Musette in A Major" one could even say had in it the roots of ragtime piano. Last but not least, it's quite possible that Lorraine Hunt Lieberson can never be less than sublime.

5-0 out of 5 stars Music for Bach's Katy
Luther had his Katy who supported him and the Reformation magnificently and faithfully.Bach who was real student and follower of Luther's, had his second wife, Anna Magdalena who was so much for him and his family and music.
5-0 out of 5 stars Charming and beautiful
This CD is a collection of music from the notebook of Bach's wife, who was a singer. It includes dances, arias and other favorite songs. Most of the pieces range from peppy little dance tunes(like Musette in A Major) to delicate baroque airs (like Prelude no.1), all played on the harpsichord, clavichord or cello. The pieces that really stand out are the arias, sung beautifully by Lorraine Hunt Lieberson in German. Most are religious, but there is one that is a nice love song "Willst du mein Herz mir schenken." The website on the back of the liner notes has the lyrics for the arias and they are worth reading. Besides the fact that this is good music, it also provides interesting insight into Bach's life and family and the liner notes have some interesting information about Anna and her notebook. This is a charming collection of music that is a great and cheap addition to any classical music collection. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Browns are Great
I had vaguely heard of the Browns before I popped their CDs in my player.WOW!! What playing & what great enthusiasm. They obviously have fun making music together and they have the chops to make it exciting for the listener. Especially fun are the excerpts from Bernstein's West Side Story & Grieg's Peer Gynt. The DVD video bits are a nice bonus.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Young Pianists
I was fortunate to see the 5 Browns in person therefore, it has been enjoyable to listen to the music that they performed in the concert. These 5 siblings are so refreshing and so talented. I recommend this CD to anyone who is looking for a CD that has outstanding piano music performed by 5 very talented young people.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
BUYER BEWARE! When the CD Cover warns you that the "...audio side of this disc does not conform to CD specifications and therefore not all DVD and CD players will play the audio side of this disc." THEY ARE DEAD SERIOUS.I bought the album, tried it in FIVE different CD and CD/DVD players - NONE of them would play the CD.Fortunately, the retailer who I bought the CD/DVD from was willing to allow me to return it (sounds like they have had similar problems!)The 5 Browns are great artists, however, it is VERY disconcerting that their CD producers/manufacturers are putting these kind of limitations on their product. ... Editorial Review

This album, which catapulted Polish composer Henryk Gorecki to into the internationalspotlight, takes texts born in pain and turns them into statements of affirmation through the use of musicthat ebbs and flows in mystic minimalism. The clear voice of soprano Dawn Upshaw, singing the Polishtexts, is a large part of the success of this particular recording, but the music, contemporary without eitherdissonance or movie-music mawkishness, clarifies and uplifts the words. This is a moving and essentialelement of the modern repertoire. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Gorecki - Spiritual and Emotional
Written for the 50th anniversary concert of Hitler's invasion of Poland and the ensuing tragedies, Henryk Gorecki's Symphony No. 3 is a powerful, prayer-like setting of memories of those events. While considered a modern composer, the work is firmly rooted in the tonal world, often creating a mantra/meditative feel; the 1976 composition is as emotional today, as it was in its own time.
5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing piece of music
This opera is absolutely amazing.I used it to help process the grief that I experienced due to the death of my closest Aunt.It worked.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Symphony for Humanity
I believe that Gorecki was uniquely inspired by grace when he composed Symphony No.3. Each of the three movements in the symphony is a prayer: mother to child or child to mother. Each prayer pleading for grace to be bestowed upon a loved one that has suffered much pain created by man's inability to cherish life and spirit above pride. The first movement contains the words of the Lamentation of the Holy Cross Monastery. It is Mary's prayer for her son during his time of greatest need. The second movement contains the words of a prayer found on a wall of a Gestapo cell, written by an imprisoned young girl. It is the young girl's prayer for Mary during her time of greatest need. The last movement brings the symphony full circle. The words in the last movement is a mother's lamentation of the death of her son who was killed at war. Again, we find a mother praying for her son during his time of greatest need.I can not imagine anyone who would not be touched by this symphony or would not want it to be apart of their collection once they have it. The musical composition, on it's own ground, is truly inspiring and Dawn Upshaw's voice truly resonates the deepest sense of emotion or understanding of what each movement should reveal.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not as great as fans would have you think
Like the film, the Crash soundtrack is highly over-rated. Don't get me wrong--it's not bad by any means; indeed, Mark Isham is one of my favorite artists, and his score is much better than the film for which it was composed. But to claim this work is groundbreaking or the best soundtrack of the year/decade is naive and myopic.
5-0 out of 5 stars One the best sountracks in the 2005!
The movie crash was outstanding but one the most thing i loved from "Crash" was the soundtrack Wow! there is a lot amazing songs like "In The Deep","Maybe Tomorrow" and "Crash" all them are excellent,"Maybe Tomorrow" is my favorite song in this sountrack is a well made song and deserves to be nominated for best oringinal song beacuse in the deep was great but maybe tommrrow was way better, the song Crash was a little weird but still on the greatness, with an excellent mixed genres, the crash sountack is must to have for those who enjoy an oringinal and unbelivably beautiful sountrack.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Music Experience
This album is an experience. The songs are remarkable.I dont know if the movie makes the songs amazing or if the songs made the movie amazing or a little bit of both but this is the best soundtrack to a movie I have ever heard.I listend to this soundtrack on the bus on the way to my state track meet and it really kept me relaxed and even motovated. It might seem a bit odd that a down tempo album could motovate a runner, however, these songs were uplifitng and lively.Dont wait, get this album, I cant say enough about it. ... Editorial Review

This piano-playing team of five siblings could be easily dismissed as just another crossover ploy, but that would be a mistake. My initial surprise turned into an hour of pleasant listening and, on rehearings, to admiration for this unique ensemble of talented young artists. For one thing, they've got the chops to bring off some fiendishly difficult works. Listen to the way sisters Desirae and Deondra tackle modernist Witold Lutoslawski's Variations on a Theme of Paganini, or brother Ryan's colorful romp through Ginastera's tricky dance rhythms. The fivesome also achieve carefully balances in their concerted works, with a scrupulously turned version of Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue and their arrangement of highlights from Stravinsky's Firebird. Those in doubt should hear tracks two through four, for irresistible versions of Lecouna's popular Malaguena, a fetching combination of Dvorak and Copland, and a piano rag by John Novacek. A delightful, spirited disc that never fails to please. Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Hug your pillows girls
THe only reason I am writing anything about this album is because it contains the Odyssey by Incubus, and its probably some of their best work and will go down as their most unnoticed. While the rest of your nerds are huggin your pillows at night thinking about your video games and the "gnarly instrumentals" on this album you sit there and bash Incubus' work. The first track by them, Follow, is not all that great however it was re-released on an additional cd with their Alive at Red Rocks DVD and it sounds sooooooo much better on that cd (with some real lyrics)But after listening to the Odyssey I was really hoping this to be a new direction for Incubus, a more proggressive/conceptual sound.Whether this is the direction they go on with their new album is yet to be heard. Its a shame that this work will go unnoticed, and the only reason it will be that way because a bunch of losers decide to try and impress people with (what they think) is a sense of music just because its of a classical nature.Yes, the rest of the music on the album is amazing, and I give big ups to its composition, but come on people, show some love to good music when its presented to your faces.

5-0 out of 5 stars best video game soundtrack ever.
i understand that many people are a bit angry with breaking benjamin and hoobastank being in here. i'm not particularly happy myself with the last track, but i think contemporary music is appropriate here, albeit lyrics may not be the greatest form of expressing the mysterious feeling behind everything. i think o'donnel and salvatori have what it takes to compose a score of music, but it's not a score, it's a soundtrack. i found that if you don't like them you can just skip them. the second to last track is a great way to end the soundtrack.

5-0 out of 5 stars classical music listeners stop complaining
The worst part of this album was songs with lyrics (breaking benjamin, techno, hoobastank)...i dont understand then why people are upset with the incubus - follow has one word the whole song (two if you count "yeah") and their instrumental songs are brilliant, floyd-esque at times.for those of you reading others criticizing this album, ignore them, ignore the three bad songs on this album, and purchase it and enjoy it. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A wonder indeed
When I first bought this CD I was a bit disappointed with Gould's humming (it mainly affects the 1981 version). I was irritated by it especially knowing that Gould was a kind of a music purist. Whether you like it or not, this "singing along" is really a blunder.
5-0 out of 5 stars Please have this CD!
Often we listen with different approaches - the sound engineer listens to how it has been recorded; pianist will listen to how it has been played (if all the right notes were there :-) ), musician will listen too, may be also paying attention to singing as well. And as a musician, I used to pay attention to now little details like that, as later I realized - this is about the music primarily, and he was closer to God (as J.S.Bach intended) as we try to. Yes, he was emotionally unstable, but it doesn't matter. What matters is what you want to get out of it - stop judging his playing, or singing - listen to what BACH wanted to tell you!!! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Better than baby einstein
This is a great CD, with great music, at a great price.Everyone seems to love Baby Einstein, but I don't like the plinking music on those CD's, I like real orchestral pieces to stimulate my child. This is exactly what parents need, at a good price!

5-0 out of 5 stars great music at a great price
I got this cd to use as background when putting my 18 month old to sleep and for car rides. So far it has not made it out of the car. The cd is wonderful. The first song is the Luftansa airline comercial song (that is what my husband calls it) and is beautiful. I didn't think my husband would enjoy the cd at all but he doesn't mind one bit listening to it, he actually will put it on himself when we get in the car. My daughter loves it and will often start nodding her head back and forth to songs. I actually listen to it even when my daughter is not in the car. The music is soft and relaxing but not boring. It is also one of the only cd's that my in laws don't mind listening to when they are in the car with us.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful CD for all ages

4-0 out of 5 stars enjoyable
I have enjoyed this cd thus far.If you have the money to spend, this is relaxing and enjoyable, however you can get similarmusic for free on your local classical station. So if you would rather save your money...just tune in on your radio dial.I am glad I bought the cd for the familiarity of the songs, but I also love just plain old classical radio.

5-0 out of 5 stars Play in utero, sooths out utero
My wife put the headphones from her portable CD player on her pregnant belly every night before bed."Ultrasound" played for 30 minutes to an hour every night to our unborn son.Once he was born he'd sometimes get cranky in the car. We'd turn this CD on and he'd INSTANTLY settle down.It was amazing. He's 15 months old now and it still calms him down after a frustrating car ride, and he goes down for naps like a champ with this CD playing. I HIGHLY recommend this technique to all pregnant mothers!

3-0 out of 5 stars staggerinly complex music makes for music hard to listen to
This score features one of the greatest violinists of our day and was written by a master composer, but those who do not appreciate dissonant, modern classical music will not enjoy this album. It is not pleasant-sounding melodic themes that most movie scores are.The writing in this music is terribly complex and theoretically intriguing, but this is not a score that I sit down and listen to as I read a book or something. This is not background music. With the exception of a couple tracks, this is not music that will please the lay people of the film music world.I give this score 3 stars because it has brilliance behind it, but will only appeal to very (modern) classically minded listeners.I'm sorry to say I don't fancy myself one of those.I recognize this piece for what it is, and honestly admit that I don't enjoy it much.

5-0 out of 5 stars It'll leave you breathless!
John Corigliano like Leonard Bernstein or Aaron Copland-known more for his symphonies than any film music-has created one of the best scores ever. Many people are not familiar with "The Red Violin" and it's such a shame! This soundtrack contains some of the most beautiful and heart-rending music you could ever imagine. It's so powerful that you could relive the entire tale told in the movie just by listening to the music alone. Joshua Bell's performance as the violin soloist is brilliant! I gave this sountrack five stars because six wasn't an option. Anna's theme, the one that circulates throughout the entire movie...whether it is sung, hummed, bowed...it can be the most mysterious, the most beautiful, and the most disturbing melody-sending shivers down your spine. That's one of the reasons the score is so great, because of the adaptability Corigliano gives even this one theme. It's funny how one change in timbre, execution-style of playing, etc. can change how the melody affects you. Buy this soundtrack.

5-0 out of 5 stars Haunting
I love this movie.I love the soundtrack, too.The music is haunting and I can't get it out of my head.I really like the way the story follows the violin and correspondes this to the present. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Music, lyrics still pack a pleasing punch...
Although it sure isn't the 60's anymore, mostly a good thing since the decade had many tragedies, the music from the original Broadway show is great fun. It's hard to beat this combination of energy and poignancy, with its caste of politically naive, sexually aware, substance-abusing, wounded but funny characters. A milestone of American musical theater, for good or ill, anyone who loves Broadway should own a copy of "Hair."

5-0 out of 5 stars The Age of Aquarius brought to life onstage!
One of the best shows ever to hit Broadway! I am in a theatre group in my town and the teens did "Hair" for a musical. It was my first, and I fell in love with the show and all its unique characters. The show is about a young man named Claude who is going to be drafted to Vietnam and feels confused about how to look at the situation he's in, and, with the help of his hippie friends, learns to "let the sunshine in." From Berger and his imaginary girlfriend Donna, to Jeannie and her enviormental concern, to Sheila and her protests, to Woof and Mick Jagger, to Crissy and her dream boy Frank Mills, Ragni, MacDermot, and Rado have created a one-of-a-kind cast of oddities set in NYC in the 1960s, who get by by as a tribe and live a free and meaningful life.
5-0 out of 5 stars "How dare they try to end this beauty?"
"Hair" was before my time (coming out nearly a decade before I was born) but I fell in love with this soundtrack circa 1992 (I loved the song "Donna" as I was 16 years old when I first listened to it).

5-0 out of 5 stars Aladdin Soundtrack- Really DOES take you to a whole new world!
ONE OF THE BEST CDs, BY FAR! I've been buying many of the major disney soundtracks, -the Lion King, Tarzan, Beauty and the Beast- and then I came across Aladdin. This is definantly one the top with them all! I never get tired of this soundtrack. Some very amusing dialogue and songs, Robbie Williams does a great job, especially in soundtrack 8, Prince Ali! You'll be singing it all day.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful soundtrack!
This soundtrack, a joy to the ear when watching the movie, is just as wonderful to hear on cd.It's fun revisit favorite songs from the film like "Prince Ali," "a Friend Like Me," or "A Whole New World." Then too it's grand to hear the instrumental score to the film on disc.My daughter and I play the cd in the car and it makes our drives so dramatic!I like that she enjoys the more classical music at age 3 in addition to the vocal/character parts she recognizes from the movie. For me as a parent, it's delightful that some of the Disney films like Aladdin have music and characters adults can truly enjoy. A gem - clevel lyrics, beautiful music, fun to listen to and sing along to!

5-0 out of 5 stars More Great Fun
Like the first volume, this CD encourages young children to enjoy classical music. The silly lyrics sometimes impart factual information on the composer or the piece. There are 11 sing-along symphonies and then the 11 symphonies are replayed without the lyrics--total of 22 tracks.Booklet with lyrics and trivia is included. All our children (aged 2-12) enjoy this CD, as do we.

5-0 out of 5 stars One is better but this is still awesome!! Gotta have it!
My children loved Beethovens Wig 1. I checked this one out at the library. Then, we decided we had to have this one too.
