5-0 out of 5 stars The Best One Disc Compilation of the Man That's Out There!
If you had to call modern classical guitar by another name, it would be John Williams.A student of none other than the brilliant Andres Segovia himself, John has shown over the years to have learnt a great deal from the master and has himself developed simply impeccable technique.

This is a delightful compilation. The music flows effortlessly and leaves the listener wanting more.

5-0 out of 5 stars Opera for Children
This is an excellent CD to introduce children to some of the more familiar operas.I would highly recommend this CD for children and also for adults who want to become familiar with opera.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Opera for Children
This CD is an excellent compilation of opera for children and adults alike. The operas that are represented on this disc are: Carmen, Il Barbiere di Siviglia, Faust, Il Trovatore, Madama Butterfly, Die Walkure, Les Contes d'Hoffmann, Aida, Die Zauberflote, and Hansel und Gretel. People love the Children's March, as well as the Toreador Chorus, from the opera Carmen. The well known Toreador Song is performed on this CD by great bass- baritone Jose van Dam. Children who watch Bugs Bunny will recognize "Largo al factotum" from Il Barbiere di Siviglia. Sherrill Milnes performs the role of Figaro expertly, and his falsetto is evident in Figaro's famous patter aria. Great choruses, like the Soldier's Chorus from Faust, the Anvil Chorus from Il Trovatore, the Triumphal Chorus from Aida, and the Humming Chorus from Madama Butterfly make appearences on this CD. The Doll Song from Les Contes d'Hoffmann is performed by soprano Joan Sutherland. She uses her voice to rise up and down, like a mechanical doll. My favorite German baritone, Hermann prey, performs Papageno's entrance aria from Die Zauberflote, as well was the duet with Papagena. Choruses from Hansel und Gretel round the CD.

4-0 out of 5 stars My six-year old liked it!
My six year-old son enjoyed hearing this CD. We like to sing together, so we found many of the pieces quite alot. But to be honest, when we discovered the more recently released CD, The Classical Child AT the Opera, he went wild because all the pieces have been translateded into English, so it's much more enjoyable for us to sing along. So I would recommend it, but check out the other one as well -- your kids will be glad you did. All the best, Steven ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Mahler from a surprise orchestra
This is an absolutely stunning Mahler 6.Quite simply: great sound, great playing and a winning interpretation by a conductor who understands Mahler. This certainly beats recent accounts by Thomas and Abaddo. All four movements have ideal tempos, though Eschenbach is very flexible and knows where to let it breath.Although the andante is liesurely in tempo it is incredibly moving and never drags. The hammer blows in IV are like a bomb blast.Too often we have to settle for poor sound or a dull interpretation, but here we have a great American orchestra and a top recording team.Don't miss it! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Joshua Bell...
This CD is a wonderful CD to see how Joshua Bell interprets some of the standard repertory of violinists of this century. The only thing I was dissapointed in slightly was that it included music from other CD's already produced by Bell, but otherwise, a wonderful gift for someone who has never heard Bell before. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Not A Music Critic ... But A Lover Of All Music ...
Let's not be too harsh regarding this CD. I purchased this as my first baby step into the classical genre and it absolutely made me fall in love with classical music and appreciate it in a way I never could when people tried to make me like it.It is such a wide variety of classical music and I find romance to be joyful, tragic, gentle, harsh & a complete roller coaster that I found all in this ONE CD!It also made my boyfriend who hates, or shall I say HATED classical music NOW like it!That was an amazing feat!We now have many classical cd's and we always go back to this one for dinner parties, romantic baths and other things...I played this CD so much, that it got damaged and I just purchased another one to replace the one I bought years ago.If you are a critic, stay away from this cd, you will rob it of its beauty & innocence. If you are a beginner and want to open your mind to all that classical music has to offer, then this is the best money you can spend.BUY & ENJOY!!!

3-0 out of 5 stars Misleading title scheme
This is what bothered me about the CD.Three of the biggest eras in classical music were: the baroque era, the classical era, and the romantic era. Now, with CD's titled baroque favorites, classical favorites and romantic classics, one would expect these CD's to be era specific.Such is not the case.If you read the back of the CD it even says "from the romantic era of music", but the there are composers like Vivaldi (baroque) and Debussy (impressionism) on this CD.About more than half are from the wrong eras.So this music is romantic in the non-musical sense of the word, which is fine, but a little bit misleading.

2-0 out of 5 stars Don't Bother...Really!
Not what I call classical composers! THis cd is annoying in a way I really can't stand. It lacks the pure elegance of the classical days. Don't buy this cd unless you want a phony all around bad album played by cheap ameteurs. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Best of...
Sarah Brightman crossed over from showtunes to ethereal pop over the years, changing her image with nearly every album. From the velvety grandeur of "Eden" to the sparkling "La Luna" to the surreal "Fly." Several of the best songs from the 1990-2000 period are included here, and except for a few omissions, it's a top-rate collection of singles.

This is the perfect album for the new fan of Sarah Brightman. It is compiled of some of her best songs including Time to Say Goodbye with Andrea Bocelli, Eden, the haunting A Question of Honour, and live versions of Captian Nemo and La Mer. This album also includes beautifully recorded covers of Scarborough Fair and Whiter Shade of Pale. It is the essential "pop" recordings of Ms. Brightman. ... Read more

DG has put together a fascinating compilation of Segovia's art that reminds us what a protean figure he was. Segovia single-handedly put the instrument on the map by making classical guitar concerts popular events, broadening the instrument's repertory through commissions and transcriptions, and convincing even doubters that it could be a vehicle for serious music. He's heard here in brief pieces recorded between 1952 and 1969. Even in those made when he was well into his 70s, his fingers remain nimble and interpretations lively.Listening straight through, one hears many all-time Segovia favorites as Turina's Read more

Editorial Review

Except for one "previously unreleased" recording and two new ones, this is a compilation of segments taken from older Yo-Yo Ma CDs, perhaps to whet listeners' appetite to hear the entire records. The disc represents a triumph of performance over material. The program consists of short pieces and single movements of long ones and serves to display Yo-Yo Ma's extraordinary versatility, his spectacular instrumental and musical gifts, and his remarkable ability to invest everything he plays with the same commitment and emotional concentration. There is no logic to the sequence, except that it begins and ends with solo cello. Bach, whom Ma plays tuned normally when unaccompanied and tuned low with the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra, may justify the CD's title but seems out of place. Moreover, juxtaposing him with O'Connor and Piazzolla is jarring, though the Tangos are beautiful. The transcription of Dvorák's lovely E-minor Slavonic Dance, despite the participation of violinist Itzhak Perlman and his golden tone, sounds like a movie soundtrack: all bravura and cheap effects. The playing's the thing, and it is stunning, not only Yo-Yo Ma's, but that of all his collaborators, from vocalists Bobby McFerrin and Alison Krauss to pianist Emanuel Ax, Ma's duo partner of 25 years. Ax joins Ma for the Finale of Brahms's second cello sonata; that is what you may find yourself humming at the end. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars New Yo-Yo Fan
I had never listened to Yo-Yo Ma before (that I knew of) and then I was at a dance recital a few months ago.Two little ballerinas danced to "Simple Gifts" with Alison Kraus, and I had to have that song.I really enjoy playing this album when my family is just hanging out reading or playing with the baby in the living room. Each piece is unique and beautiful in its own way.Simple Gifts is still my favorite piece on the album, I only wish it were longer!
5-0 out of 5 stars Simply wonderful!
I recently got this CD as a birthday gift. I've been wanting this CD for a while. The first track is a wonderful song in all reality the entire CD is a wonderful experience. The prelude by Gershwin is unique sounding with the cello. The jazz quality is still there and has a bit of classical influence intertwined among it. Yo-Yo Ma's recording of Simple Gifts is a good song and when they had the lyrics sung by Alison Krauss it was a wonderful choice. Her vocals matched the cello incredibly well.Track 8 is a wonderful song that I love to hear being played on the cello. For any person who loves classical music or cello music this CD is a good choice to buy.It will be well worth your money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome
While most people on this site see the "classic" in the title of the album as referring to classical music only, they are mistaken. Classic Yo-Yo refers to his style, not the genre into which his music choices fall. The list of tracks alone should have been a big enough clue that the music isn't all classical.Judging this album, or any album for that matter, on just its title is simply foolish. And while this is technically a solo album, the way Yo-Yo brings in guest artists to perform with him shows his flexibility as an artist. His version of Simple Gifts is so much more than a school chorus; it is an amazing cellist playing the accompaniment on a song that is meant to be sung.

3-0 out of 5 stars It just cannot be the end for Charlotte's classical career! :(
I'm just shocked that Charlotte has decided to end her classical career with this mediocre assortment of her most loved pieces from her other albums!I wish that she had re-sung all of the pieces to make them sound better than ever with her mature voice! To me, it seems disgusting that anyone would want to end their career with a last album that sounds the way this album does!
5-0 out of 5 stars Charlotte Church
Love that voice!!This is a great CD and any one who had not heard this young lady sing should buy it and prepare for some musical enjoyment.

2-0 out of 5 stars Somewhat decent but still mediocre
I am well aware of Charlotte's age. However, I am also aware of her amazing vocals and powerful range. But these things don't make you a good singer. Charlotte chose to stick to opera in most of her songs. And face it, not just anyone can do opera.

Editorial Review

Remember all of the year-2000 nervousness in the latter part of 1999?That was nothing. As the year 1000 approached, people all over the Christianworld were convinced that the Apocalypse--as depicted in the biblicalBook of Revelation--and the endof the world were at hand. In one of the more interesting musical program ideasto be inspired by the turn of the calendrical odometer, Anonymous 4 revisits the original"millennium madness" with a disc of chant from around the year1000--specifically, a Mass for the Feast of the Ascension, one of the fewoccasions on which the liturgy included readings from the Book of Revelation. Thisis the oldest written Western music to have survived, and it's difficult even todecipher (the original notation has no staff lines or clear indications ofrhythm), let alone perform. Yet, the challenges involved seem to have done theseladies good: not only is their performance both assured and confident, but onecan hear new facets in their vocal sound--a sound that, however beautiful itmight be, some listeners find monotonous. (One new facet is JacquelineHorner, the quartet's newest member, for whom this is the first recording.) Thesingers experiment with interpretation of ornaments that are indicated in themanuscript sources (there's a fascinating little trill that sounds rather like acooing dove); in some of the chants, they add an additional line in accordancewith the principles of improvising polyphony that were laid out in 10th- and11th-century treatises. The entire program seems thoroughly considered, as wellas immaculately executed. If you count on the consistently pure, silky tone andmeditative quality that has made Anonymous 4 world-famous, you'll definitelyfind it here; if you've gotten bored with them, you might find this disc afascinating surprise. 5-0 out of 5 stars Year 1000--A Mass for the End of Time
The year AD 1000 appeared to be an apocalyptic harbringer of destruction to the devout Catholics of Western Europe. This collection of medieval chants based on themes of God's impending wrath and the judgement of the world are excellent primary sources for understanding the mystical religious mindset of the days of yore.Gregorian Chant, while different from Byzantine (Greek) and Russian chanting, is a very methodological and otherworldly form of music. It's monotone is radically opposed to the harsh discord of "rock n' roll" and "rap" music which sound like broken machinery that are so popular among all aspects of society, even the so-called "Christian rock."Although the music itself is sung in Latin, the disc is accompanied by a booklet which gives the lyrics in English translation (along with a few other languages). ... DIVE is Sarah Brightman's first work with producer Frank Peterson. The album is all water themed and pop oriented, with mostly ballads, and only one or two more up tempo songs. The tracklist is as follows:
5-0 out of 5 stars "Dive" into Sarah's world
I've read online on so many sites that Sarah Brightman is an artist that "you either love her or hater her", a forced choice. This album introduced the world to Brightman as a solo artist, an artist that has taken many risks in her career. "Dive" is this rock/pop infused album that's great to hear. Tracks like 'Capt. Nemo', 'Once in a Lifetime', or 'Seven Seas' all paint pictures for the listener of the ocean, of its mystery and beauty. Sarah has not failed the listener in stirring their imagination with her beautiful voice and words. It has to be said that "Dive" is not like her other albums, and the best part is that Brightman continues to take risks in her career. I just started listening to her and whether she does a cover song or not, she makes the song her own and turns it into something out of this world

5-0 out of 5 stars Great performance
I love this recording. I love the voice of Joan Sutherland - such a full, warm, beautiful sound. However, I must correct a reviewer who mentions that Sutherland recorded every optional high note; She does end the ensembles with SPECTACULAR high notes, but does not follow suit with "Caro Nome". In fact, before I became one of her BIGGEST fans, after hearing this version of the aria, I was THOROUGHLY disappointed. I was used to hearing the final high e''' (thanks to Moffo, in her EMI recording, and surprisingly enough, Leontyne Price), so when Sutherland ended the aria an octave lower (though sustained for quite some time), I lost what little respect I had for her at the time (late 1994, early 1995?). Shortly thereafter, I heard her 1971 (I think?) recording of the Doll's song from 'Hoffmann', and was instantly mesmerized. She may not have sung Zerbinetta or any arias with a g''', but I believe she is THE coloratura assoluta.
5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome!
I have heard many Rigoletto's during my life, but any like this. Bonyge is an absolute master, conducting London Symphony Orchestra brilliantly. Pavarotti's Duke surpasses the best of tenors, and even though I am not one of Pavarotti's greatest fans-don't misunderstand me, I agree he is very good-I think that, in this performance, he has reached his level best, thus I give him the deserveful credit of five stars.
4-0 out of 5 stars Almost the best
I really do love this recording. But because of several minor flaws, it is not my absolute favorite Rigoletto recording.

4-0 out of 5 stars I'm a fan of slow songs in latter half
I prefer the slow songs, they seems to be a better fit for my baby. I also bought The Mozart Effect: Music For Babies: Nighty Night which I like a lot. The performances are well played by talented musicians. (I have a degree from Peabody so that's a true compliment) ... Read more

Editorial Review

The chorus is at center of Shaw's reading of the score, presumably the more lightly scored 1893 version that Fauré‚ himself created (Telarc does not specify). The account flows very well, and the work of both soloists is highly satisfying, particularly Judith Blegen's airy soprano in Pie Jesu. The recording dates from 1985-86 and is one of Telarc's best, with excellent presence overall and real bass in the organ. Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars The Faure is Great, Not so Much the Durufle
The Faure Requiem (Op. 48) in D minor is a soft, gentle requiem unlike the powerful Verdi, Berlioz, and Durufle. The delicate qualities of this requiem are captured beautifully on this recording.

5-0 out of 5 stars French Choral Classics
This disk has set the standard for performing the settings of the Requiem mass by two great French masters, Gabriel Faure and Maurice Durufle. The Faure setting is an intimate one with occasional moments of tempestuousness. This particular recording features the more heavily orchestrated edition (for an excellent chamber version see the Cambridge Singers under John Rutter).Put in seven parts, additional features include two baritone solos and a lovely soprano solo. The choral parts are not difficult, but require a delicate touch with great articulation, all provided here. The harmonies gently shift with occasional color changes and chromatic mediant relationships. The concluding movement (In Paradisum) sums up the experience with a satisfying contemplative moment devoid of bombasticity.A masterwork not to be missed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Review of Aarom Copland CD: Appalachian Spring
I used this CD as part of a dance history class on American Modern Dance, in conjunction with a DVD on dance pioneer Martha Graham. The music stands alone, and my students got a bit of music history along with their dance history.

5-0 out of 5 stars Appalacian Spring
I bought it as a gift and the receiver LOVED it and plays it frquently.

5-0 out of 5 stars Copland performed at its best
This CD is one of my favorites in my classical collection.Several years ago, I borrowed this recording from the library, and enjoyed it so much that I went out and bought my own Copland CD.I got the CD containing the New York Philharmonic's performance of Appalachain Spring (conducted by Bernstein), but was sorely disappointed. After a few months of searching (this was pre-Amazon days), I tracked down this CD and bought it.The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra is superb.I highly recommend this CD for any Copland fan, or anyone who wants to have a "token" classical CD. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Life Is But A Dream...
This CD is just pure magic. I know that is such a cliche' thing to say, but it really is. Of course, it really won't appeal to those people who are into EXTREME LIVING...whatever the hell that means, because to me, extreme living is living close to the soul, close to the spirit, close to the Invisible Source that makes and creates all things in and out of Itself.
5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, dreamy
This music evokes both emotions and images of life waking up in spring, even being in a magical forest where anything can happen, or floating on clouds. You can just enjoy the music and let your imagination soar or the music can take you into that trance-like state where you can access creative ideas and creative solutions to any problems - and maybe they just dissolve of their own accord.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous collection !
If you like Debussy - whom I have heard called one of the progenitors of ambient music - you will love having his most inspiring and beautiful works together on one cd. These works are tranquil and serene, and yet they don't fade into the background - no matter what you are doing - because they are true art. When this cd is playing you can't help but listen and sigh. My cats love this cd, too. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Joyous Mozart

4-0 out of 5 stars Love this music!
Love the CD (it has two rare favs of mine... the faster Black Swan Variation and the extended Russian Dance) however, I was shocked not to find Black Swan Pas de Deux. How can you have a COMPLETE Swan Lake recording and not include that?!?!?!

4-0 out of 5 stars Which bargain Swan Lake to choose?
This Swan Lake, now offered at super-bargain price, was one of Sawallisch's better ventures in Philadelphia. The orchestra is superlative, the recorded sound quite good, and Sawallishc's conducting fairly spirited. He is by nature a foursquare interpreter, so this Swan Lake doesn't dance as lightly or vivaciously as it might. Even so, I can see why someone would be enthusiastic about it.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Swan Lake!
In my opinion, the greatest of Tchaikovsky's three ballets is "Le Lac des Cynges (Swan Lake)" (Op. 20). This ballet is the longest and the most interesting, exhilirating, and beautiful music he has ever written.
