[...] Honestly, it isn't THAT THAT great, but its good enough for its price. I'd say that your $ pays off, for a while. I've noticed how after a long time, it gets aggrivating at times. No harm meant, "Beethoven lover". I just mean don't plunge into this cd with all the hopes in the world. Besides, it's just my opinion, so you may like it more than me. All i can say is; a) listen to some samples before you buy, b)know this is not REALLY the great Beethoven himself, and c) enjoy YOUR music, whatever it may be.

2-0 out of 5 stars Great Price...Not so good itself
This a great priced cd, but the content is why it is so cheap. It's a true-amateur album. Beethoven Lover is over her/his head. This is the real world, not a fantasy-everyone-likes-every-type-of-music world. Deal with it and agree with me. It isn't so great.

Wow! This is really good. I can't believe it's not beethoven himself playing! I really recommend it to anyone who's a Beethoven lover like me! Please, I really need to know if you agree with me... ... Read more

This is a beautifully played collection of Chopin's work. It was a birthday gift,
5-0 out of 5 stars Well worth the money.Wonderful!Wonderful!
I am not a classical music expert but I am an expert when it comes to a great product.I have listened to the works of rubenstein and Horowitz, but nothing is comparable to this great collection of polands favorite son.The nocturnes are dreamy and romantic. The other pieces though not as mesmerizing have plenty of depth and feeling. This is a collection that you will listen to over and over again.Although this music is great anytime, it's especially meaningful during a light rainfall.Go ahead and make this investment. It's only $100.00.For the next 100 days save a dollar and you will have it paid for.I promise you won't be sorry.Excellent!Excellent!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best investment to make
In my opinion, this is the apex of classical music. You will not find a better CD for Chopin or any piano recordings. There may be plenty of comparable CDs, but nothing can claim to surpass this.

5-0 out of 5 stars It stays with them...
I enjoyed reading the reviews of parents whose kids have recently discovered "Classical Kids." I'm about to order the boxed set for my kids, ages 21, 19 and 16 because the nineteen-year-old, who has a college radio show and loves a wide variety of music, remembers this series (then only on cassette) with great affection and wants to hear them again. Those of you wondering whether it's worth it or not to try to introduce kids to classical music this way, be assured it works. We've turned one of Mr. Bach's lines into a family "saying:" "the more you study, the more you know; the more you know, the more you appreciate; the more you appreciate, the more you love." A great series!

5-0 out of 5 stars It all started with Beethoven
Many years ago I purchased my first CD in this series, "Beethoven Lives Upstairs." My children and I were delighted with it. I then discovered that there were more and searched them all out, one by one. My children, now 11, 9 & 5, have listened to these stories as they fall asleep for years. They each have a favorite composer and have gone on to learn more about them. These stories are a great introduction to some of our greatest composers. Not to mention a good intro to history, too!1-0 out of 5 stars Not What I expected
I love the idea, but I don't want to expose my children to the stories in these cd's.They contain children talking back to their parents, disrespectful language, sorcery, etc.If you don't like Harry Potter, you won't like these CD's. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Brendel, Beethoven, and Vox can't be beat
These VoxBox series of Brendel playing Beethoven are wonderful: beautiful playing and a great price! This set is very impressive, particularly the 32 Variations On An Original Theme In C Minor.Brendel's playing is very expressive, and the sound quality is excellent.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fine job, Mr. Brendel!
This collection of piano variations and smaller pieces by Beethoven shows Alfred Brendel in excellent form as an interpreter of that composer's work. However, four sets of variations are missing! The Variations on a March by Dressler (Beethoven's first extant composition published in 1783) is only mentioned in the liner notes. The Twelve Variations on Haibl's "Minuet a la Vigano" SHOULD have been given the characteristic Brendel stamp. They deserve to be heard more often. Also absent are the now considered spurious set on "Ich Hab Ein Kleines Huttchen Nur" (published 1832).The "Diabelli" Variations have been recorded by Mr. Brendel in a separate recording on the Philips label. Also, some of the piano sonatas and little pieces (excepting the C Minor Allegro and the Op. 89 Polonaise) were better left off.

5-0 out of 5 stars A treasure!Buy it!
I can't believe no one has reviewed this album. These discs are a complete and continual joy! The sound is brilliant beyond compare, and what Brendel gets out of the piano is amazing--an incredible range of moods and dynamics.I also own the variations in a (much more expensive) set by Buchbinder, and they seem cold and stiff compared to these. The longer I live the more I admire Beethoven, and these discs add immensely to my awe at his genius. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Dorsey Rocks It Out in Beethoven Style
This is one of the very first CDs I bought, way back in 1988 when it was released, and, as it turns out 18 years later, it's still one of my favorites. Why would a near-20-year-old classical recording -- of synthesized origin, no less -- continue to be a favorite?
5-0 out of 5 stars Good Clean Fun
First off, one needs to understand that Don Dorsey has a great sense of humor in order to fully appreciate his recordings.Years ago, he made a splash with his Telarc release titled "Bachbusters" which presented Bach keyboard pieces on the Synclavier with explosive sonics. This disc is a followup to Bachbusters and although it didn't sell as well or receive as much praise as its predecessor, I actually like it more.I find this disc to have more artistry and musicality and still provide plenty of sonic punch. If you doubt that claim, then que up track 11 (Fur Elise), crank the volume knob to 11 and get ready to see the coil from your subwhoofer get launched across your listening room floor. For more good clean fun, try track number 1, then perhaps skip up to the Moonlight Sonata (tracks 5 through 7).This is great stuff, but to enjoy it to the ultimate, your sense of humor will need to approach that of Mr. Dorsey's.

Editorial Review

This 15-disc set, recorded from 1990 to 1992, is a truly complete survey of Chopin's piano music, including juvenilia and the works for piano and orchestra. It may not be quite the triumph of Biret's Brahms set, in which the performances are competitive with the best to be heard anywhere. But all of this playing is thoroughly worthy of the music, and Biret's technique is strong enough to deal with such hurdles as the Études and Scherzi without flinching. Her style is a bit more straightforward than that of the most famous Chopin poets (such as Rubinstein and Cortot), making these recordings a particularly good bet for students and listeners who are first learning to love Chopin. One can often come up with a (more expensive) recording that expresses even more of the poetry of the music than Biret does:Moravec's Nocturnes,Rubinstein's Mazurkas,Zayas's Études, and so on. And occasionally some of the lesser-known music (such as the First Sonata) might be better skipped except by scholars and curious listeners who want to know why these pieces Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars 5 stars for performance, 3 stars for packaging and mastering
I got this box set because I wanted to have all of Chopin's piano music without investing in the redundancies of various artists' recordings. Much has been said about Idil Biret's playing and I find it splendid.
3-0 out of 5 stars Worth the price, but you get what you pay for
Ms. Gerber sums it up very well above: the playing is not what you'd find from Rubinstein, Cortot, or Ashkenazy, but it is still better than many recordings out there, and is a tremendous bargain.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great!
I really enjoyed listening to Biret's approach of chopin on these 15 discs. I have heard other pianists play and i personally find every one of them comparable and each have their own pros and cons. The price of this influenced me over the grammophon's boxset. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A good deal to enjoy
Though Beethoven could play the violin he was not a virtuoso on the instrument. The piano, on the other hand, was changed as an instrument by him.He was always on a quest for more sonorous and richer sounds and piano makers did their best to oblige. Many of Beethoven's avant guarde ideas about composition and the role of music in self expression started as piano sonatas and piano works. With this in mind, Beethovens compositions for the piano are some of the most outstanding, brilliant, and technically pure works to emerge from any composer. It is impossible not to feel the emotions Beethoven wishes to convey from piece to piece.
5-0 out of 5 stars Jazzy Ludwig!
An excellent set featuring Ludwig van's sets of variations wherein he gets jazzy and swings on catchy tunes!Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great "lost" Beethoven...
Whether it's rock and roll, classical, jazz, or any type of music, I always find some of my favorite works in a composer's "B-side" stuff, items that aren't always the best known pieces in their repetoire. And that's what I've found here.So these are not even near "trifles."There's plenty of melody, drama, and humor--the same as in all of LVB's compositions.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Magnificent Playing!
I first heard most of the selections contained on this CD on an LP issued in the early 1970's on RCA, "Josef Lhevinne: Master of the Romantic Piano." As, indeed, he was. I have rarely heard such outstanding, luminous Chopin playing. Rubinstein is the only one I can compare him to in that regard. The piano transcription of Strauss' "Blue Danube Waltz," which Lhevinne frequently played as an encore, is delightful, campy fun, and his duets with his wife, distinguished pianist and teacher Rosina Lhevinne, give a new dimension to his artistry. I read once that Van Cliburn, Mme. Lhevinne's most famous student, expressed his admiration of the Debussy duet to her, and was astonished to learn that the Lhevinnes recorded this complex duet as an afterthought, in one take, at the end of the Mozart session!
5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Topmost Pianists of the Golden Age
Are there any real comparables in our time?Arrau is close, so is Richter or even Casadesus, all Titans of our time. But it seems obvious that as a whole, none is quite his equal. Earlier on, Dohnanyi has long been brushed aside by the younger audience, so has Hofmann and Backhaus, and Rachmaninov is simply unreachable and then Busoni's recording is so abhorring... So, Lhevinne shall for sure prevail.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant!
I found this CD more satisfying than the previous two. I play it constantly while driving. I have no idea how I came to this CD. Maybe one of my daughters bought it for me. I prefer the renditions of Mozart, Beethoven and Dorsey himself to those of Bach (personal taste, I guess). By the way, I found tracks 20 and 21 on this CD, "Dimensions" and "Birthday Dimensions," the best of the lot. Both were composed by Dorsey. He should do more. I am waiting for his next CD. Dorsey is a gift to our generation, as much as Beethoven was a gift to people of another time.

1-0 out of 5 stars Make him stop!
I can't believe this guy even has a recording contract. He is completely without talent and just plays a bunch of machines that any 15 year old with an IQ of 80 can operate. This music is some kind of bad joke.

2-0 out of 5 stars Busted is a bust
This CD is a big disappointment after hearing BACHBUSTERS and BEETHOVEN OR BUST. It contains duplicates from these previous albums and a lot of other music that isn't especially pleasant to listen to and has no central theme. The Mozart additions are not very exciting and sound a lot like cuts from the previous albums. I had hoped to hear some great Mozart stuff on this disc, but it isn't there. ... Read more

Editorial Review

This all-Chopin disc marked Mikhail Pletnev's debut as a pianist on Deutsche Grammophon. Although Pletnev's interpretive approach was castigated in some corners, his playing is admirable and extraordinarily manly, with a decidedly Slavic cast and yet with all kinds of elegance. One is struck repeatedly by Pletnev's crystalline arpeggiations, the velocity of his passage work, his singing tone, his rhythmic suppleness, and, above all, the grandeur of his sound. And does DG ever do a number on that! If you've ever turned pages or played on a real stage, this is the sound you hear: big, resonant, incredibly solid, rich in overtones, and slow to decay. The weight and immediacy of the lower octave are better captured here than on most other recordings, as is the action of the dampers. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A dazzling Chopin recital
Along the path of one's classical music journey, certain performers in particular seem to connect deeply and captivate one's musical senses much more than others. For many like me, Russian piano-wizard Mikhail Pletnev is one of these special performers whose unique and electrifying style really stirs the spirits and emotions, regardless of the music being played. There is a dynamicism ... an excitement ... an unfolding drama Pletnev brings to music - and this well-conceived Chopin recital is no exception.
5-0 out of 5 stars Chopin the Pletnev way
Today I listened to this cd for the first time. I have not heard such a unique, personal interpretation of Chopin for a long time. You may not always agree with some of his interpretative choices, but this is undoubtedly a very exciting and surprising cd.

I am truly astonished that this CD, despite the fact that it has been released for nearly five years, has not been rated by anyone at Amazon. Among my very bulky collection of Chopin's oeuvre this release of Pletnev I consider one of his best. So far he's released three CDs entirely with compositions by this composer. I admire the interpretation of Chopin's works on the other studio recording (Sonata No. 2, Scherzo No. 2), however, I find it quite inferior to this one as far as the quality of sound is concerned.Particularly I dislike the excessive amount of reverb. This recording, however, is simply superb in every possible aspect. The whole of it represents a wonderfully compiled recital, each piece rendered with gorgeous and stylish interpretation. You can feel how each representation is a result of the interpreter's devotion to each piece. Pletnev's Chopin is thoughtful, poetic, beautiful, and brilliant. Above all, Pletnev's Chopin is new and individual. Unlike the plethora of pianists busily recording Chopin, Pletnev is releasing only the compositions as a result of true artistic reconsideration. Here, in my opinion, he brings an incredibly inspiring Fantasy in F minor as well as the Sonata No. 3 in B minor. In the Finale of the Sonata he puts to shame all other grandiose interpreters. Yes, Chopin requires devotion! All the other smaller works on this CD are simply an infallible approach in the rediscovering of the Slavic composer. When it comes to its sonic qualities the entire CD is an unquestionable success.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for Piano Students
Perfectly performed versions of classic piano pieces for the advanced beginner/early intermediate piano student. Very useful and enjoyable to listen to for such piano students and pleasant enough for others.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great listening, any time
I purchased this cd after hearing one song from it on classical radio. Because it is a cd meant to show students how to play songs, the songs are played simply, without embellishment. They are lovely. This is a great cd to play when you want to relax and just hear simple melodies played beautifully.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have for piano teachers
I am a piano instructor at a large conservatory where I instruct many younger players. This disc stays in the CD player in my studio almost constantly. Nowhere else will you find such a great collection of pieces which are in the standard teaching repetoire. The playing on this disc is very clean and clear, with great attention to each and every musical detail. My students have all benefitted from this fine recoding. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Chopin Reincarnated
This recording is a must for any music lover! Mr. Ohlsson will help you emerge from the cave of musical shadows, into which you were perhaps driven by lesser performers. You will get no schmaltz from Mr. Ohlsson; he is as far away from the schmaltz as Tolstoy's Anna Karenina is from the Harlequin Romances. You will be brought out from the shadows to the goodness of the musical sun, by this supreme performance in which Mr. Ohlsson has reincarnated Chopin. At the end of the second CD there are several bands by another fine performer, Ronald Smith, which fit nicely. ... This is a wonderful CD.It's narrative is quite pleasing and of course the music is fantastic. We listen to this in the car and my 7 yr old daughter just loves it.It has sparked some interesting conversations.I am very pleased with it and will most definitely purchase others in the series.

5-0 out of 5 stars You will not regret this purchase
I bought this CD and the others in the series - Mr. Bach Comes to Call and Mozart's Magical Adventure and my oldest son, who is 4, will put this CD in first thing in the morning and listen to it and all the others 2-3 times a day. They all are charming and intelligent enough that I don't mind listening to it over and over again with him.All of the CDs in the series have well told stories that integrate the music beautifully and give you a brief but complete history of these musicians and what life was like for them.Enjoy!

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome for young and old!
I just got this monday and we've already listened to it twice. I have 3 kids under the age of 4 and we all love it. I happened to listen in on my middle child playing with a doll and telling it it must be Beethoven because she wasn't listening.I will definitly buy more of these Classical Kids CD's! ... Read more
