Editorial Review

This is an astonishing collection of works - or parts of works - by Mozart that covers almost every aspect of his creative output: symphonic, religious music, concerti (for piano, horn, violin, clarinet, flute), chamber music, serenades (for strings; winds), a couple of opera overtures and more. Those who know and love Mozart's music will not need this, but it's a great introduction, a great overview. The selections are well-chosen and interestingly organized, with familiar pieces splrinkled among some not-so well known. A good primer. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A nice introduction
This is a good well rounded collection to dip you into the classical world of Mozart.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mozart is the reference point for good classical music.
A good collection of his best work and I find it helps me focus when I'm writing or contempating life.
4-0 out of 5 stars Mozart's music
This is a review of Mozart's music, not the cd.Mozart is praised to the skies by all and sundry, including most musicians, including my father, who no doubt has his reasons. But my feeling about Mozart has always been that there is nothing in Mozart's music that is other than music. There is no logical impressionism, there are no events that seem to be transpiring as in, for example, Beethoven.Mozart is just music.Mozart is to music as pure mathematics is to science. It hints of nothing else and has no application.I find some of his music irritatingly trivial, for example, Eine Kleine Nachtmuzic. This is mechanical music that one can imagine being piped in by a totalitarian government that insists everyone be cheerful. If Disneyland was an eighteenth century totalitarian state, Mozart would be its Muzak. The populace would be awakened, like Chinese train passengers, at 6AM by the strains of some allegro. They would arise and busy themselves with their ablutions in a state of thoughtless cheer, never for one moment leaving the surface of things. That being said, the second movement of Mozart's clarinette concerto is the music that one will hear on going into heaven. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars THE VERY BEST OF THE BEST
This is indeed a very awesome cd for me, because i would not have known which artist to buy, this way you get a variety of them. this cd is great for beginners such as I am.
4-0 out of 5 stars Era issues
This CD is only "classical" in the sense that it is music by an orchestra. It does not mean that the music is from the classical ERA of music. It is still beautiful music, but those of you who are trying to learn to distinguish the different time periods will be disappointed. The CD actually does claim to be from the classical ERA but actually has much baroque era and romantic era music on it (the romantic CD by the same publisher is also not era specific). In regard to some of the other reviews, while the classical era did have an emotionally detatched quality, not all of the music on here is classical!Still, for those of you looking for an introduction to "classical" music, it is a beautiful CD.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pleasantly Surprised! :)
I'm not much of a classical music buff, but I realized not too long ago that I do like many of the "popular" classical music tracks. Since then I have been on the lookout for a collection of "famous" classical music tracks that would appeal to the layman (so as to develop my interest in classical music further, and also to familiarize myself with some of the more famous classical tunes). Saw this CD on sale and bought it on a whim, and I havent been disappointed. The collection is indeed very nice, and my only gripe is that there isnt a single Beethoven track!! (and I wonder why non of the other user reviews mention this). ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars I'd rather watch Bugs Bunny cartoons
I borrowed this disc from a co-worker.Initially, IO was interested in this disc because it seemed like it could be a very clever way to introduce classical music to children.I tried to like it, but I found the singers very cloying and saccharine sweet. The lyrics created for the music were very ricky-ticky and not very creative.Perhaps it is best used with very young children, but my students were less than impressed with the selections available on this disc. When introducing classical music to young children, I have found it is not necessary to find cutesy versions of the music with silly lyrics put to them.Watching old Bugs Bunny cartoons (quite a few use classical music as their background) caught my students attention and interest a lot more than the music on this disc did.

5-0 out of 5 stars Kids love it
I have not actually listened to this one - we gave it as gift and have not heard from them either. But we started with Beethoven's Wig 3 which is OUTSTANDING!My kids love it, as do all the "kid" passengers who have ever heard it.We also have #2, which initially didn't seem as good as #3, but with more listening, we are enjoying it more too.#3 was a winner from the very first song. The lyrics are hilarious and the music is beautiful - and my kids love the instrumental pieces as much as the sing-along versions.

1-0 out of 5 stars Crap/KitchSAVE YOUR CHILDREN FROM THIS!
This is so much worse than silly phrases to remember a symphony and the composer. The singing is horrendous, and so much vibrato, that anyone who thinks it is an example of good musicianship will never learn that there is some good music out there - 'cause it ain't HERE!

Great price for the product.I am so glad I logged onto Amazon.com for things like this.It arrived faster than expected.I will definitely continue to buy more in the future.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent soundtrack and an excellent film!!
Eventhough many kids in school listen to rap and all, I listen to classical. After watching Amadeus, I was moved by the pieces selected to be played in the film. I especially liked Symphony No. 29 1st Movement. Also, when Salieri is at the Archbishop of Salzburg's palace and reads Mozart's piece, Serenade for Winds, is among my favorites. In Serenade for Winds, Mozart creates a very emotional and almost night music feel to it. I was surprised that the director/conductor did not put in a few more famous pieces into the album . . . ex. Symphony No. 40, The Magic Flute, etc. This is an excellent album and anyone who wants to enjoy the genius of Mozart should purchase this. Take it from me, you will enjoy this album immesensely.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good performances, good CD
I prefer the slow songs on this CD, they seems to be a better fit for my baby. The performances are well played by talented musicians. (I have a degree from Peabody so that's a true compliment)

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
My baby is 4 months old and absoletly loves this CD. At 6pm when he gets fussy, this is the only thing that calms him down and allows him to go to sleep. It is well worth every penny!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful
My daughter is now almost 5 years old and she still listens to the same CD she did at 5 months old.She is very bright and is doing amazing in her Junior Kindergarten class. She has always loved music, but she can't fall asleep unless we put on her Mozart CD.I would recomend it to any new or expectent parents, or even to parents who have a hard time putting toddlers to bed.It is a very soothing CD to listen to. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars still great 6 years later
I bought the "Mozart Effect" CD and a few other classical CD's; Bach and another Mozart after my daughter was born in late 1998. We had a difficult time getting her to sleep at night and decided to try playing music to soothe her.The "Mozart Effect" CD worked every time.As soon as she heard the Toy Symphony play she would relax and just listen to the music until she fell asleep. It's been more than a year since we played the CD, and recently when she was ill, she asked to listen to "her music".It still has the same calming effect.Regardless of the controversy surrounding Mozart's ability to make babies more intelligent, I think this music is very comforting and enjoyable.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful CD
I received several classical music CD's as gifts before my daughter was born, and out of all of them (also including classical CD's I had already owned) this is definitely my favorite. It stands out because it is not full of simply "traditional" arrangements but rather is very light and playful - there are all sorts of cute little chirping and whirring noises that add to it as well.It is just a lot of fun, and provides the perfect background for cuddling with your new little one.4-0 out of 5 stars Works as advertised-
The Mozart Effect - Music for Babiesis a pretty good disc. Admittedly not the best Mozart recordings around, but then my child is not exactly picky. I prefer Genie's Angels All Around as a lullaby CD but either The Mozart Effect or Angels All Around would make excellent baby shower gifts. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Better than baby einstein
This is a great CD, with great music, at a great price.Everyone seems to love Baby Einstein, but I don't like the plinking music on those CD's, I like real orchestral pieces to stimulate my child. This is exactly what parents need, at a good price!

5-0 out of 5 stars great music at a great price
I got this cd to use as background when putting my 18 month old to sleep and for car rides. So far it has not made it out of the car. The cd is wonderful. The first song is the Luftansa airline comercial song (that is what my husband calls it) and is beautiful. I didn't think my husband would enjoy the cd at all but he doesn't mind one bit listening to it, he actually will put it on himself when we get in the car. My daughter loves it and will often start nodding her head back and forth to songs. I actually listen to it even when my daughter is not in the car. The music is soft and relaxing but not boring. It is also one of the only cd's that my in laws don't mind listening to when they are in the car with us.

Hello everyone,

My husband and I are musicians so I inwardly groaned when we were given this CD as a gift--I'd rather play the originals rather than some synthesized kiddie version. However, on a recent road trip we got desperate when our colicky son would not stop screaming. We popped this in the CD player and it calmed him down immediately.I swear, it's like aural crack for babies. We now play it at bedtime to help calm him down and it still works. You may not love this CD, but your baby will. ... This is an excellent introduction to classical music.Well performed and presented.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Beautiful!!!!!1
If you are a fan of classical music then you better get this set. Not only is it very cheap, 10 Discs for about 2$ per disk. Now where are you gonna find a deal like this. I actually found mine chaper, $20.00 even and the music is outstanding. If you had a very bad day and very stressed out, just put in one of these cds, lay down, dim down the lights and just relax. It really helped me out.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not A Music Critic ... But A Lover Of All Music ...
Let's not be too harsh regarding this CD. I purchased this as my first baby step into the classical genre and it absolutely made me fall in love with classical music and appreciate it in a way I never could when people tried to make me like it.It is such a wide variety of classical music and I find romance to be joyful, tragic, gentle, harsh & a complete roller coaster that I found all in this ONE CD!It also made my boyfriend who hates, or shall I say HATED classical music NOW like it!That was an amazing feat!We now have many classical cd's and we always go back to this one for dinner parties, romantic baths and other things...I played this CD so much, that it got damaged and I just purchased another one to replace the one I bought years ago.If you are a critic, stay away from this cd, you will rob it of its beauty & innocence. If you are a beginner and want to open your mind to all that classical music has to offer, then this is the best money you can spend.BUY & ENJOY!!!

3-0 out of 5 stars Misleading title scheme
This is what bothered me about the CD.Three of the biggest eras in classical music were: the baroque era, the classical era, and the romantic era. Now, with CD's titled baroque favorites, classical favorites and romantic classics, one would expect these CD's to be era specific.Such is not the case.If you read the back of the CD it even says "from the romantic era of music", but the there are composers like Vivaldi (baroque) and Debussy (impressionism) on this CD.About more than half are from the wrong eras.So this music is romantic in the non-musical sense of the word, which is fine, but a little bit misleading.

2-0 out of 5 stars Don't Bother...Really!
Not what I call classical composers! THis cd is annoying in a way I really can't stand. It lacks the pure elegance of the classical days. Don't buy this cd unless you want a phony all around bad album played by cheap ameteurs. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Retrograde Mozart with undeniable heart
Leonard Bernstein thought that every composer was a romantic because he was. These big, heart-on-sleeve performances of Mozart's great late symphonies use the Vienna Phil. at almost full force--they could slip into the Brahms First without adding personnel. Bernstein lived long enough to theoretically be influenced by the period-instrument movement, but his allegiance never shifted. He belongs with Karajan and Bohm as the last conductors for whom Mozart should sound "important."
5-0 out of 5 stars Mozart: The Great Late Symphonies
What a great album we have here. Leonard Bernstein conducts the later symphonies of Mozart, which are considered to be his most mature and his greatest works for full orchestra. This album is worth the price and a treasure to own for your extensive classical music collection. If you appreciate classical music, you'll truly enjoy this album. Everyone knows that Leonar Bernstein ranks among one of the best conductors of the 20th century, right up there with the great names of Herbert Von Karajan, Bruno Walter, Sir Neville Marriner, all who have held their own when it comes to Mozart's music. Karajan I feel is not quite as good when it comes to Mozart's symphonic works. Bruno Walter and Sir Neville Marriner have long surpassed Karajan in the area of Mozart symphonies. Indeed, if you get the chance be sure to check out symphonies conducted by either Bruno Walter or Sir Neville Marriner. Marriner and the Acadamy Of Saint Martin In The Fields did mostly Mozart and provided the music of the 1984 Milos Forman film Amadeus.5-0 out of 5 stars The best bargain on the market
The new Trio series has to be one of the most welcome and affordable additions to the classical music market. This set shows why. For a budget price one can get pretty much all of Mozart's best loved symphonies, in some of the most highly regarded performances made of them. Bernstein's lush, relaxed, and very romantic interpretations may not be for all tastes, especially those who have become used to period style. But for those who feel Mozart would have preferred his music performed with the warmth and beauty that is missing from the rather cold, analytical period interpretations that have become the norm, these are for you. I cannot recommend this set more highly. ... Read more

I love all of the Baby Einstein DVD's, so the music CD has been just as good as the DVD's. I play it all the time when my son is in the car and it seems to calm him and keep his attention. I even listen to it in the car when my son is not with me.It is relaxing and soothing.I definitely recommend the CD's for the car. ... Read more

I was hoping for more music - there's just too much storytelling for my and my kids' taste. We love the Beethoven's Wig series and were hoping this would be similar.

5-0 out of 5 stars what a road trip
i bought this item after reading some of the reviews on amazon for my nephews who are 2 and 4 years of age.two months after christmas their mom was explaining how they request the cd everytime they are in the car.she groaned when i was in the car and they boys wanted to show me how much they liked the cd.during the trip i witnessed a mother humming along to the music with her children, the boys singing to excerpts, and an overall execptional learning experience about music, culture, and history. if you are looking for something that all children will like, passes the time on a road trip, and teaches important lessons about life without being pretentious then get this cd, it is a guaranteed crowd pleaser. ... Editorial Review

Volume I of the immensely popular Mozart Effect series of music attempts to do no less than "strengthen the mind." One thing is for certain: the music chosen on the disc by author and scholar Don Campbell--excerpts from Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 1; Violin Concerto, No. 3; Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Music for the Mozart Effect
This CD is a compilation of various tunes geared to stimulate the mind. I really enjoy listening to it!

4-0 out of 5 stars Mozard Effect... Which Songs?
It's also important to remember that the Mozard Effect... was mostly studied using Mozart's Sonata in D for two pianos.Although all classical music may have good side effects when it comes to learning and concenrtration and stimulating of the mind, most studies used Mozart's two pianos sonata.Which isn't on this album. And the reasoning behind it's benefits are possibly due to the nature of having "dueling" pianos making complex harmonics.Just remember to buy this because you like Mozard, not because you think you are going to make your children geniouses. That's just a bunch of hype.

3-0 out of 5 stars Important to remember it's not proven
It's important to remember that the Mozart effect has not been proven. The behavioural consequences of listening to Mozart is not unique, and can be achieved with any classical music, since the mozart effect has nothing to do with behavioural consequences, but subtle changes in the brain. The pattern of Mozart's music is thought to correspond to a coding mechanism of brain cells that created more dynamic circuits...but remember, it's not proven. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My daughter loves this CD!
My seven year old is quickly progressing at piano and is playing simple pieces of Bach. She had previously only appreciated Bach (with a Bach children's tape) but now is true to Mozart. Plays every morning on our wayto school--what a way to start the day!

Editorial Review

Karl Bohm was one of this century's great Mozart conductors--a fact that's apt to beforgotten in the flood of authentic instrument productions, many of them on DG's associated labels. He conducted Mozart with real love and affection, maintaining moderate tempos, allowing eachwork's gorgeous melodies a chance to sing and breathe. Mozart's symphonic music has its roots inthe opera house, and so did Bohm. Listening to the witty woodwind interjections in the finale ofSymphony No. 39, for example, you can readily imagine the witty exchanges of differentcharacters in one of Mozart's comic operas. These beautifully recorded versions of Mozart'sgreatest symphonies belong in the collection of every fan of the composer. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Sound Quality and Precision
Precision. That is what comes to my mind when listening to a Karl Bohm interpretation of Mozart.Mozart's final symphonies are ageless masterpieces of music.Anyone can recognize the opening Allegro moto of Symphony No. 40 in G-Minor (one of Mozart's only symphonies in a minor key).Just finding a collection with these wonderful symphonies is a great find.
5-0 out of 5 stars Other than Bruno Walter's
Columbia SO recordings (NOT with the New York PO) , which are OOP, this Bohm is the one to have, the only one you need actually. As I've heard at least 6 other major conductors, Klemperer , Mackerraas, both Levine's etc etc.
3-0 out of 5 stars Efficient interpretations and lovely playing, but there's more to Mozart
I can see someone admiring these recordings, since they are very well executed and crisply presented, with no major flaws. And I can see why Mozart was considered one of Karl Bohm's best composers if you like his foursquare, unsmiling approach. Apparently many other listeners and reviewers don't demand more than what this bargain set of the last six symphonies delivers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for Massage!
I'm a licensed massage therapist, and I absolutely adore using this CD during my sessions! It's a great alternative to the new age-y music styles that are so pervasive in the relaxation music scene -- my clients find this CD soothing & relaxing, and not at all "weird".This music suports a "relaxed but focused" atmosphere -- it serves as excellent white noise in the lobby area, and I even use it at home as a soothing backdrop for reading/ sewing/ paperwork/ etc.Excellent arrangements & clarity -- DON'T MISS!
