5-0 out of 5 stars Sensitive modern pianism
Borrowing a phrase from the contemporary political philosopher Fukuyama a case can be made that the world of classical piano music has reached "the end of history". This notion is based on the often heard idea that it only takes two clicks to get superior performances of any piece worth recording at home and that this part of the universe has reached a state of completion. Add to that the ongoing decline in the appreciation of "classical" music and its economic repercussions and you end up thinking twice before advising your children to pursue a career in this field of employment.
3-0 out of 5 stars Suspicious Reviewer
I am sure Emil Gilels' recording cannot be surpassed but why not get both? After all, there isn't much of overlap.
1-0 out of 5 stars A great pianist?
To be called a great pianist doesn't necessarily mean you are a great pianist. What on earth is great with this pianist? I actually don't know. Neither do a lot of people with whom I've talked. Several Norwegian pianists play these lyric pieces of Grieg better than Andsnes. His playing is actually boring. He is not telling me anything. Well, he sure has tremendous technique, brilliant understanding of form, he dress correct, smile at you from behind the piano and so forth, but at the same time he totally lack the creative force that is so important in piano-playing. Yes, his playing is utterly smooth, correct and nice, but unfortunately lack the mysterious extra, this personal touch we always look for in classical music. Never the less he is called great! What kind of great is this! Some say he is a new Horowitz. Well, it must be a Horowitz without a heart and musical imagination - a perfect piano machine. Or perhaps I've missed the point. I really don't know. One thing I know for sure; Andsnes is not a great pianist. I'm sorry. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite classical music album
I first listened to this entire set of music on cassette in 1983 and prior to that I heard parts of it on a CBC radio program called "Gilmour's Albums" in 1979. It remains my most favorite classical music album. The range of sounds coming from the organ and the interpretation of each piece is wonderful. Having this music still available after nearly 50 years, and on CD no less, is a tribute to Fox and his outstanding talent.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good as an introduction to the organ (and Virgil Fox)
I hate to beat a dead horse (with 7 reviews) and to slightly contradict some of the previous opinions, but I can't agree that this CD is one of Fox's greatest. It serves as a fine introduction to those who want to hear the rich tonal palette of an organ and indeed, few are finer than Fox in the jaunty Schumann "Canon" and the oh-so-sweet "Ye Sweet Retreat."However, repeated listenings show the Little Fugue and Handel to be a bit sloppy, and the overall nature of the CD somewhat one-dimensional, with the faster pieces very fast and ending very loud, the slower pieces very slow and ending very softly.
4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Music choice.
Virgil Fox is without a doubt one of the most advanced organists in the new phase of Organs. As an Organist myself, there are many new changes with Organbuilding and how older Organists try to adjust and try to get used to. From the Sound of the Organ it is indeed a rather powerful Organ with what sounds like a Possible 32ft Reed!!! I do not know where this recording was held at, but You need to listen to some of the Samples that there is. There are a wide variety of moods with this organ all the way up to a very scary but demanding Full Organ! Buying this cd is a MUST. If not then at least listen to the samples. You will not consider it a waste of time. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars You get what you pay for
In the Brandenburg Concerti, the tempo varies, trumpet volleys sound like French Horns, and the flute is off tune half the time. The harpsichordist was good but in one of the concerti, decided to enter at a different tempo than had been set by the rest of the orchestra. Since he had to play some very fast runs later, it is no surprise that he wanted to slow down the orchestra, but maybe they should have worked it out earlier. The orchestra sounds leaderless and out of sync at times. Can't find the groove. Violins are competent but playing with an orchestra that needs to practise what they are going to play a little more.

5-0 out of 5 stars Worthwhile, especially if you like Brahms
Johannes Brahms was one of the key figures in Romantic Piano Music. His output for the instrument was varied and large, and this four-disc set is ample testament to that output. As it was with their complete BeethovenSonatas set (by Bernard Roberts), so it it here: Nimbus have enlisted afine artist with a good command of the piano to record all of Brahms' solopiano music, and whilst I am not a Brahms addict myself, I am sure it willgive great pleasure to collectors and serious Brahms fans. The olian-Skinner organ in St.Philip's Cathedral, Atlanta is the finest example on Earth of eclectic organ...and the last- really-marvellous instrument erected by this firm. Flutes and Erzhlers speak directly from Heaven...and the organ, despite electric, seems to have tracker action! Listen to Bach's BWV 731 and 648: they sound like played on a Silbermann instrument! Editorial Review

To speak of Conlon Nancarrow's music for player piano shouldn't be mistaken to suggest some still broader range of musical output of which the composer's piano rolls are but a subset. Quite the contrary: Nancarrow's meticulous scores--generally unplayable, at least by most primates--are the body of his life's work. This five-CD set contains dozens upon dozens of his studies, each a fairly self-contained exploration of tempo, pitch, rhythm, counterpoint--and the interaction between pairings of those core musical categories. Certainly, this is "difficult" music, hard on the ears, off-kilter in a manner that both demands attention and may repulse listeners unfamiliar with experimental composition. After initial exposure, this collection is the sort of thing that sits on the shelf for some time, before your imagination breaks its internal code. Once that code is broken, though, the vast life inherent in this "mechanical" music becomes almost intoxicating. On some of the quieter pieces, the piano's tone is similar to that of a harpsichord. On others, the palimpsest of ragtime is undeniable. Yes, some pieces seem overly chaotic, but spend some time with them and you'll see, in your mind's eye, dozens of hands working the keys. 5-0 out of 5 stars symphony of a thousand (pianos)
Imagine for a moment that you have entered a room full of slightly beat-up upright pianos. These pianos begin to come to life by sputtering out unusual, irregular melodies. The melodies don't fit together exactly, but somehow they seem right sounding together. Before you know it, there are so many pianos playing that you can't keep track of them all and they begin to accrue into an impossibly dense spray of sound. Even if you had a roomful of humans playing these pianos they wouldn't get the overwhelming, unswerving independence of each individual line in each piano. The pianos stop playing and you wonder what just happened....
5-0 out of 5 stars piano revelations.
This stuff influenced Ligeti's "Etudes" for solo piano. The music is mind-blowing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dizzying experiments by a brilliant maverick
A true compositional original, Conlon Nancarrow is best known for these mind-blowing pieces for player piano. Why this particular instrument?Because most of these short works are utterly unplayable by human beings, unless you are capable of say, depressing all 88 keys at the same time. While later in life Nancarrow also wrote a few small pieces for chamber ensembles, his work here is the core of his output and where his imagination truly took flight.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A good budget introduction to Nancarrow's "live" music
Conlon Nancarrow (1912-1997), one of the greatest of the American musical mavericks, is primarily known for a huge collection of studies for player piano (available on Wergo) which were a significant influence on major later 20th century figures such as Ligeti. This disc (which originally appeared on Musical Heritage Society) is a sensible choice for Naxos to reissue on their American Classics series, as by concentrating on music for live instruments it helps round out the image of the composer, as well as providing an accessible introduction to his work for those who don't want to drop $60 on the player piano studies. Much of the music on this disc is early Nancarrow, but Naxos do score by including two late works, the piano piece Tango? and the Second Piece for Small Orchestra, which was written for Continuum, the ensemble performing on this disc.

5-0 out of 5 stars for shame!
[...]Heifetz is incomparable; everyone ought to have a disc of him playing showpieces, and I see no reason why this shouldn't be that disc. He recorded for RCA with better sound quality, but these early recordings are what made him famous. The second piece, a transcription of a Strauss song, is a model of "vocal-style" playing. This is what the violin should sound like. I was absolutely transfixed by this CD, and if you have any emotions you will be too. [...]

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful recordings by the young Jascha Heifetz
These old (1920s) recordings are amazing in the modernity of Heifetz's musical conception and style, as well as in the reliability of his technique. They are among those recordings with which Heifetz created an entirely new aesthetic and technical standard for violin playing, a standard that is controlling to this day.He simply moved violin playing into the modern age.For example, the way Itzhak Perlman, Pinchas Zukerman and Hilary Hahn play violin (strong, smooth, even tone; total technical reliability; carefully restrained emotion; the complete ease and understatement with which even the most difficult passages are mastered) is simply inconceivable without the pervasive influence exerted by Jascha Heifetz. And these recordings let us witness how he did it, how he single-handedly revolutionized violin playing (and, together with Toscanin and Horowitz, classical music in general). It's great stuff, and in many ways he is better, more exciting to listen to, than all those that had the misfortune of coming after him.The review below is exceptionally silly for taking Heifetz to task for minor technical issues. When he recorded these pieces, there was no splicing, no re-recording passages that didn't work out so well, no electronic tricks.not only are these recordings essential to the history of musical interpretation, they're also simply great fun to listen to.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not Up to Par
Heifetz is one of my idols, but sadly enough, he disappoints me here. His La Ronde de Lutins is quite bad. He misses the D harmonics, and tends to be overpowered by Emanuel Bay, his pianist. He tends towards an unnecessary accelerando when playing the F sharp on all four strings. His double artificial harmonics following this passage aren't always clear, nor played as a chord. The song goes smoothly for a while, then you get to the pizzicato section. His pizzicato isn't loud enough to overpower the piano, which is playing annoyingly loud. Antonio Bazzini was a violinist himself, but never really enjoyed the fame of Paganini or Sarasate or Heifetz. He preferred to compose. He went to the Padua school of music and taught such greats as Puccini. Although his music sounds nothing like theirs,I don't really like Strauss' works, but this one I found to be nice. It is melodic and grows on you. You really love this piece after a while. The Concert Polonaise by Wieniawski is one of my favorites. An exercise in virtuosity tempered with delightful melodies. Heifetz as usual, takes it at a blazing speed. Interestingly enough, you don't notice it until the song is over. This is performed as Wieniawski would have performed it - with class and with speed. I have another recording by Aaron Rosand in which he has an orchestra accompanying him. I really like that. The Meditation by Glazunov is really romantic and dreamy. It is a great way to relax and Heifetz interprets this song beautifully. The only setback of this track is the hiss. If you are a person that likes "white noise", you won't be bothered by it. I don't believe in "white noise". For me, the hiss distracts me from the music. The Scherzo - Tarantelle is a real show off piece with little to no musicality. I like it because it is fast and catchy. L'enfant Prodigue is a song with many layers. Superficially it is very nice, but the deeper you go into it, the better it gets. Debussy was a phenomenal composer who helped with the leap from the Romantic era to the Modern era. But, he did it with grace. His early opus numbers are romantic, but as the opus numbers increase, so does the number of new stylistic devises. I love Spanish music, and Albeniz is one of my favorite Spanish composers. The song is a light song that drifts gaily through the air, infecting all that hear it with a sudden happiness. It is truly a wonderful piece. Elgar is a great composer for the violin. He wrote a truly magnificent concerto for the violin that is filled with passion. His La Capricieuse is a great encore piece. It also has a lot of musical value for violinists. If you want to learn how to do really good up bow or down bow staccato, this is a must play piece. The introduction is really stiff, and you don't want to welcome this music, but before you know it, you love it. Moritz Moszkowski was a great composer. His Guitarre, transcribed by Sarasate has become a solid piece in the violin literature. He plays it for all it's worth and doesn't flub a single note. The harmonics are pristine and float above the rest of the music, like it's supposed to. The Danza Espanola Number one is my favorite. It is really mysterious in the beginning, and then flourishes into a lively dance. The ending starts softly, then grows louder and louder to grand triumphant conclusion. The one sad thing about this is the background noise. I am not a fan of modern composers, and the Tallahassee Suite did not really appeal to my ear buds. It was nice, but lacked the depth of the romantic era. The Ruralia Hungarica is a nice song. When I close my eyes, I feel as if I'm in a whirlpool being swirled in sound. Laugh if you want, but it's the truth. The Valse by Castelnuovo - Tedesco is a song that appeals to a selective few. I am not one of those few. I find the notes to be strewn all over the place. The movement perpetuels have a delightful simple tune that just struck me a s genious. How someone make such a catchy tune that uses very few notes? Well, he does. Hora Staccato is a great song that became Heifetz's trademark. This is a good recording, except for the scratchiness in some of his down bow staccato. RCA Victor released the same recording on their CD "Heifetz Violin Greatest Hits". The Vivaldi Sonata was a bit of a disappointment because I remembered the Four Seasons and the virtuoso solo parts. Then, I realized that the Four Seasons was a later composition when he was much stronger technically. This sonata was short brief, but catchy. I think that Heifetz misses most of the musical content in it though.Paganini was the greatest technician that ever lived. Born with Marfan's syndrome, he nearly died at birth. His health was constantly bad, but he continued on. His amazingly elastic fingers allowed him to perform the most impossible feats on the violin. His 13th caprice starts out sounding like a person laughing. The fast section is pretty well played. He misses the chords though, and his attempts to reach them sound really scratchy. I much prefer the one played by Michael Rabin. That one is perfect. The Bach English Suite is pretty nice. The second part is well known Suzuki student. I really don't like it that much though. Cesar Frank was an organist. His Symphony is supposed to be like an organ, in the sense that there are no breaks. His Sonata is very nice. It flows and is very violinistic, meaning that it seems like it was made for the violin. It is really catchy and almost is at a walking speed. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Mystery Solved
First off, thanks to "Not Colin" for his extremely thoughtful and comprehensive review, which helped me decide to purchase this Nuova Era set (his reasoning about the unlikelihood that Demus would record this huge corpus again was especially insightful).
5-0 out of 5 stars Mystery meat
I don't think I've ever before experienced such frustration in trying to assess a product. Here a well-regarded and fairly well-known pianist sits down and records all (even that's up for grabs) the piano music of a pretty well-known and well-regarded composer and barely a peep out there in Internet land.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Cavalcade of Canons
This CD is a true gem. Where else can one find a collection of canons from those in the Musical offering to the obscure dedication canons Bach wrote for his friends to the 14 canons on the first eight notes of the Goldberg ground? This is the only such collection I know of. The playing is superb throughout and the recorded sound brings the ensemble into your living room. For those interested in canon this is a polished diamond.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Bach gem-let!
"A Musical Offering" is the name of an early morning radio program here in the Bay Area [KPFA], on which Mary Berg blesses those who listen each Sunday with beautifully chosen Bachian music. She played this CD last week and I went out and bought it.I've listened thrice now, and each time it brings a smile to my face.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful
The previous reviewers said enough about Nancarrows history so that I won't touch on it.I like the orchestrated versions of the player piano pieces much more than the originals, they're more emotional, have greater dynamics, are less robotic (they swing at times) and the variety of timbres adds a lot to the listening experience. What were originally studies are now fully realized pieces.Perhaps not groundbreaking in the way the originals were, but so what. The beauty of Nancarrows' melodic and sometimes humorous music is really brought out by the orchestration.Very nice.

2-0 out of 5 stars mostly worthless
I couldn't get into this CD. I've heard some of Nancarrow's piano pieces and found them interesting, but when taken to a larger scale with an orchestra or ensemble, it sounds formless, senseless, and lazy. The piano trio is alright, but not worth getting the CD for.

5-0 out of 5 stars Something to behold
Certainly a departure from his work on the player piano, these are very delicious arrangements of some of his most interesting studies. It was one of my first forays into the world of "serious music" and i have, frankly, never listened to anything, anything, quite the same ever again. I had had no idea music could be like this, like what it sounds like insidemy mind.If you are even looking at this page, there is some curiousness;become its slave, and buy this here cd.There is no way you could regretit, even if you do. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Top-rate Organ recording.
This is by far the best recording of an organ I have heard.Credit is due to four virtuosi: the organist, David Higgs, of course... but also the designer of the fabulous Fisk tracker, and Pei Cobb Freed & Partners, the architects of Dallas's Morton H. Meyerson Hall;and finally, but not least, the genius of the recordists in using (if I remember the notes correctly) only two microphones. All four components got it right - a feat that is rarely accomplished.
5-0 out of 5 stars You can't go wrong
The combination of instrument, music, and player is outstanding. This recording will give you hours of pleasure. I recommend it heartily! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Idil amazing
No other performer compares to idil. HANDS down. HEr unique and individual style sets her apart from every other performer past and present.
5-0 out of 5 stars Essential Rachmaninoff at a good price.
Buy this box set.Biret is great. She plays Rachmaninoff straight up and doesn't taint the compositions with any wild "interpretations."And the recording quality is five star, too. I bought this in order to snag some lesser known Rachmaninoff that I loved (Cinq Morceaux, Moments Musicaux, etc.) and I really got what I paid for.Take a look at the huge tracklist - this is the Rachmaninoff you've been missing out on. ...
