5-0 out of 5 stars $70/40... you do the math.
No, I don't own this collection...yet.However, the price of the collection compels me to review it beforehand.Never have I seen such a complete collection of Vivaldi compositions at such an incredibly low price. At $1.75 dollars a CD, the record producer (Brilliant Classics) isn't making much of a profit. The compilation pulls some of its works from DG Achiv Produktion's vault (see Standage), such as the violin concertos, as well as from unknown producers (the Poland Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra is heavily featured). The collection is so complete that it is academic, and I would not be surprised if music libraries quickly emptied it from Amazon's shelves. The collection is simply worth it for the incredible price (English Concert's recording of the violin concertos cost nearly 30 bucks, and is exactly featured here). Overall, the price alone makes this collection exceptionally attractive, and the ensembles featured aren't bad either. ... Read more

These really work! Ever wonder why listening to classical music may make you more up-tight than relaxing you? Here's the reason...

5-0 out of 5 stars Induces great relaxation, pair with noise-cancelling headphones and sleep on plane.
So far I have only really used the relaxation CD, which works amazingly well.I have been flying more red-eyes lately in part because I know I can sleep on the plane from as soon as I get on.However, I have always slept pretty well on airplanes!

These cds sound like simple classical music, but they do indeed assist you to enter different states of mind. For best effect, wear stereo headphones. But even without, you will find it easier to relax, sleep and meditate. If you don't like classical, the Brainwaves Suite has a new age/environmental sound. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An Unexpected Treasure
I love Bach and Vivaldi.I have lately been accumulating Vivaldi Concertos like they are going out-of-style.I stumbled across this CD at the store while looking for a Bach CD and decided to give it a try.I've heard Albinoni's famous Adagio in G minor, but was not familiar with his other works. If you love Baroque period music, this CD is a must have. The pieces are absolutely beautiful, and have increased my respect for Albinoni.I plan to listen to more of his work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pachelbel Canon
This is the best version of the Pachelbel Canon as far as I'm concerned.

3-0 out of 5 stars poor sound quality and not the best performance of the canon
I agree with the folks that say that this is not the best performance of the canon. It's played at the pace I like, but there is this plucking throughout that is very loud and you can hardly hear the real music.I didn't buy this for the canon, although I wish it was as good as most of the other reviewers say it is.I got it for a couple of other works by Pachelbel which are hard to find. Those are good compositions but it just doesn't sound good on this disc. The sound quality is pretty bad, it was recorded in 1968. I have other remastered discs from this time and they don't sound this bad.Still though if you just want to check out a couple of other works by Pachelbel(or Fasch) I guess it may be worth it.Just don't expect anything that will blow you away.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best and most Beautiful recording of the Canon

4-0 out of 5 stars My Favorite
Taking the role of Orlando is a tall order for a singer that is not Marilyn Horne. She made "Nel Profondo", and "Sorge L'irato Nembo" almost the original "hits", and part of her signature arias. Though refreshing, the execution of these arias can't escape to be overshadowed by Horne. "Sol da te" is one of Vivaldi's best arias, and no doubt that Philippe Jaroussky its best interpreter to date. His singing intertwines with the flute, grows, flourishes, fuses, and finally rings in silence at the end. The aria is so bewitching, and its performance so flawless that his voice blends with the flute into one single musical instrument. Veronica Cangemi sings superbly "Chiara al pari", and elevates it to a virtuoso level. Jennifer Larmore's lung capacity and dizzying speed are phenomenal and super-human in "Andero, chiamero, dal profondo" . If I ever thought that "Andero, volero, gridero" from Orlando Finto Pazzo required high octanage to be sung, Larmore proves that she not only has the fuel in her belly but also the turbo power in her throat. This is one of my favorite Vivaldi Operas.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Unheralded Vivaldi Masterwork Given a First-Class Production
Composer Antonio Vivaldi may always stand in the shadow of his contemporary Handel when it comes to Baroque compositions, and the distinction between the two is further blurred by the fact that both composed operas based on the same epic poem, Ludovico Ariosto's "Orlando furioso". Vivaldi's 1727 opera came about eight years prior to Handel's "Alcina". Unsurprisingly, while several recordings of "Alcina" have been produced (including a particularly strong one of the 1999 William Christie-conducted Paris Opera production with Renee Fleming and Susan Graham released in 2000), this is the first full recording of Vivaldi's work, part of the Naive label's commitment to bring Vivaldi's largely unknown but beautifully composed operas to light.
4-0 out of 5 stars Delightful singers make this recording a joy
It is thrilling to see more of Vivaldi's operas being recorded. However, this recording of Orlando Furioso may not be for everyone. Jean-Christophe Spinosi's style of conducting is described in the liner notes as "physical;" and this is certainly true. He asks the Ensemble Matheus to `punch' Vivaldi's openings and to accent each phrase with sharp articulations. The singers soar through their runs at break-neck speed, which makes for exciting listening. But Spinosi pushes the tempo of every aria, so much so that many of them clock in at under three minutes. Even the adagio arias move along at a quick pace. For listeners accustomed to the heart-wrenching, gentle interpretations of Baroque opera offered by Rene Jacob and John Elliot Gardner, Spinosi's interpretation may seem blunt and over-done. Spinosi is a young conductor leading youthful singers, and all are clearly excited by Vivaldi's music. However, this recording lacks the mature guidance and interpretation of more experienced musicians, and thus may bother some veteran connoisseurs of Baroque opera.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very enjoyable at a great price
This is a collection of lovely pieces at a very reasonable price--for over 63 minutes of baroque music. It has 2 pieces each of Handel & Vivaldi plus an assortment of lesser-known composers.I particularly like the Purcell piece. It does not, however, have any Bach or Telemann. It's fine listening music and could be used for meditation or background music as well.

3-0 out of 5 stars A Nice Collection of Pieces
This is a nice collection of Baroque pieces but as is usually the case with this kind of collection the recordings and performances just aren't that spectacular.I'm not sure I would have gotten this CD if it hadn'tbeen given to me.That being said if you are looking for an introductionto Baroque music this is not a bad CD to start with, at least it gives youa taste of what's at hand. ... I had heard some of Telemann's work on interent classical stations and wanted to learn more. This is a great introduction to a great composer at a great price. I found the quality satisfactory and my stereo is fairly advanced. The music flows nicely, which is not always the case with "best of" compilations. This will become a core part of my classical collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow!
Wow! Rarely a great composer is honored by a stellar voice, an eclectic aria repertoire, and a robust orchestration like in this CD. Lorenzo Regazzo can now die and go to heaven as a primo uomo. His timbre is in the true basso register. His renditions are flawless, creative, and refreshing. He imparts so much passion, pain, grief, and high theater to arias such as "Gelido in ogni vena". He builds instantly the mood and momentum that tear up the heart and soul of the listener. His interpretations are full-fleshed in coloratura and tessitura, and never repetitive. The singing bravura in "Con la face di Magera" is only counter-pointed by the clever and warm end note that brings the aria to a totally unexpected and pleasing anti-climax.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfection itself!
Lorenzo Regazzo is the perfect Vivaldi bass. His coloratura technique is breathtaking - precise and fiery. His expression is feverishly passionate. His voice - sensuous, resonant, and pleasantly "covered", creates a bel canto illusion of a whole range of human sounds from an angry growl to moans and whispers, all shockingly beautiful. Regazzo's vocal ornaments are elegant and thoughtfully composed to fit both music and word. In short, very few modern singers are virtuosic enough to do this enchanting music such justice.

3-0 out of 5 stars If you're really in a hurry to get over Pachelbel's Canon
Karajan was an amazing conductor. Precise, demanding, exacting, but also emotional and deeply sensible to nuances and subtleties of the various works and comosers he conducted. He's amazing with Beethoven and Wagner, for instance.
5-0 out of 5 stars A beautiful way to spend some time
Unlike some recordings of works that demand your attention, as one reviewer pointed out this can be the backdrop for romance, (dare I say) easy listening, or playing with the kids or grandkids. It is a wonderful canvas upon which to paint your day.
5-0 out of 5 stars Gentle, Slow, Reflective...and Wonderful
Karajian's Adagio is, as the title of this 1994 album culled from previous recordings of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, a CD devoted to the "adagio," a slow, gentle tempo that first became widely used in the Baroque period of music. An adagio can be either part of a greater whole (the Allegretto or 2nd Movement from Beethoven's Seventh Symphony in A major) or a complete self-contained composition (the "Valse Triste/Sad Waltz by Sibelius).Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars All-Time Favorite Baroque
This is a CD that you can loose yourself in. The Adagio in G Minor is haunting and melancholy and beautiful. All 19 tracks are fluid and wonderful.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Jewel of Music History...
Thomaso Albinoni has often been overlooked, save his piece for Organ and Strings. This CD should bring any listener into admiration of his works. The first piece on the CD is the Organ and Strings, but the rest are Adagios from his Oboe Concertos. I just adore this CD and think it adds a brilliant touch to any collection. A Must Buy.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Italian master of the classics has been done good here.
If you like classical composers, this release showcasing some of the classical works of the great Tomaso Albinoni is for you.A lot of these releases here on CD are done by a full orchestra and every piece that hehad out is covered here very nicely by the members of it as well.Thepieces themselves have a very simple , elegant, and very melodious air thatis very good to the ears, and has no fancy tricks to it too.All that ison here is the pieces that the great composer himself has done, and isgiven rightful credit here too. There is also a very good way that theyplay here with this release, and the result sounds as if the great composerhimself was in the orchestra and playing the piece with the members, ordirecting the orchestrahimself. And the very simple elegance in thisrelease is also carried through all the very simple and different piecesthat are here, including Adagio in G minor as well. What is even nicer tois that there are other instruments here that play other pieces are equallygiven the showcasing , and not just the pianos. And I for one also likesuch different instruments being played accordingly and them and theplayers being nicely showcased equally. And in the classics , that is whatmatters. It is also a very nice thing too, and in fact it also reminds meof a very smooth and quite lovely musical blending of a tasty treat fromfood , albeit music wise. And it is very good and smooth as well done finesilk too. No static here, not one missed note, and no noise background inthe piece as well too.If only other orchestras would play the classicalmusic masters with as much style , flair, and finnesical class as thisorchestra has with the great orchestral works by the great Tomaso Albinoni. If you want to get into the classics here, try them with the release byTomaso Albinoni called Adagio. It is a very simple, elegant, lovely andvery nice introduction to his works, and it is also done very good serviceby this most talented of orchestras as well. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Tomaso Albinoni
This was my first CD of music produced by Albinoni, and I was quite pleased.I first discovered Albinoni while listening to my local classical station. After hearing a fantastic Baroque piece, I jotted down the name of the composer and looked him up later.Albinoni's music is wonderful, especially if you are a fan of the classic Baroque style (as I am). This CD contains a superb collection of oboe concerti which rival any oboe pieces I have ever heard.Wonderful in your car, at the office, or just relaxing at home with a good book.Very nice collection!

5-0 out of 5 stars Albinoni: Oboe Concerti, Vol. 2~ Tomaso Giovanni Albinoni
Albinoni was a contemporary of the better known JS Bach and in my opinion he is not as good as Bach but compared to modern composers he is quite accomplished. The oboe is a very sensual instrument and when one hears this it can easily lead to various states of emotionality. Albinoni does this quite well and the Naxos recording does this masterfull composer justice with a quite accomplished recording. Anthony Camden is a very skilled oboist and he brings the music to life and is an interesting read from what I read in the well-written booklet that comes with the music. This is a recording that I highly recommend and it is truly a pleasure to listen and experince should a fine recording.

5-0 out of 5 stars Everything is recommendable.
Those who want to hear what other composers were doing during Bach and Handel's time should snap up some of the many CDs featuring the works of Tomaso Giovanni Albinoni in the Naxos catalogue. His oboe concerti are collected on three Naxos CDs.The works are charming, mellifluous and engaging. They are also amongst the first extended series of concerti written for oboe soloist with orchestra.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great sounding concerti for string orchestra
I took a chance on buying this CD.I had purchased another Point Classic CD with Anton Nanut conducting Mahler's Titan and I was very impressed with the quality and value of that CD.This CD is equally impressive. The strings are well balanced. The sound is recorded DDD - clear, warm and open. This CD may very well be the best-sounding Vivaldi CD in my collection. And, for the price, this one should not be passed up. ...
