4-0 out of 5 stars Walt Disney Concert Hall premiere recording
A few thoughts, Disney Concert Hall produces bass powerfully. Ok. It's huge. Not boomy. The sound engineers are top. It's very balanced. It's smooth, deep, and rich. This SACD is a sonic show piece for bass. The only place were it may have been over the top is in the opening of The Miraculous Mandarin, the organ enters as if it's a monster. (If that's the point, they've succeeded.) Though, only the suite, this version of the Mandarin is one of Bartók's versions which is "essentially the first two thirds" of the longer score--it is all of the best parts. The disc as a whole is fun, shimmery (rather than icy), colorful, and liquid. The bass seems to stand out, but I'm not used to powerful bass. All the instruments (strings, horns, percussion) are well voiced throughout. I'm happy with this premiere recording.
5-0 out of 5 stars And Now The Musical World Can Hear!
Esa-Pekka Salonen has become one of the foremost conductors of Stravinsky's masterpiece 'Le Sacre du printemps' and finally there is a recording to match the brilliance he reveals in this score. This astonishingly superb CD is the first recording made in the perfect acoustic of the Walt Disney Hall in Los Angeles, the home of the Los Angeles Philharmonic. While no recording can capture the otherworldly magic of sitting in this hall surrounded with the most perfect sonics ever granted an orchestra by an architect, an acoustician, and the power of the premiere orchestra under the baton of Salonen, this recording comes as close as possible!

5-0 out of 5 stars whoa.
"Atmospheres" was enough to make me buy this album. just try to imagine what eternity might sound like. okay, now you know exactly what Atmospheres is. wow. who else could having captured the feelings that are in this score? this is above talented. this is above genius. this is above avand garde. this is too good to be labeled as anything at all.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Music for Halloween, very creepy
I bought this CD to use for a haunted house program, the music will creep you out.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bleakest of Futures...
The atonal, unsettling atmosphere of much of the music of Ligeti is fitting to the bleak vision of a human future reigned by nothing but cold technology and of humans drained of emotions except for the deepest animalist fear originating from our inner reptilian brainparts which have not changed for over millions of years. The incongruity of Johann Strauss' lovely 'An der schnen blauen Donau' with the cold technicality of spacefaring as depicted here could not be more complete, but what a perfect find on Stanley Kubrick's part! It makes the uneasiness and confusion even greater. And then, to top it of, the complete and flabbergasting irony of using Richard Strauss' Fanfare for the 'rise of Man' in his 'Also Sprach Zarathustra': what a great destiny for 'Man' indeed, this bleakest of bleak visions of the future!

Editorial Review

This release comes from Sony's immense backlog of famous recordings ofLeonard Bernstein and the New York Philharmonic. In fact, these works trace theevolution of the New York Philharmonic into a world-class orchestra in the late1950s under Bernstein's hand. At this remove in time, we can almost hear NewYork in these works. Bernstein deftly captures the shimmering glamour of hismusic, particularly in Overture to Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One to remember Lenny by
A composer/conductor at the peak of his energy level in some of his own most vibrant music, working with an orchestra that (in these recordings anyway) was an extension of his personality--what more could you possibly want? In later years Bernstein re-recorded most of this music for DG (including the WSS "Symphonic Dances"), and while those readings are technically fine, they miss a lot of the verve and New York atmosphere that this CD exudes. The version I'm writing about is a 2004 reissue with remastered sound and a bonus in the form of Three Dance Episodes from "On the Town."

5-0 out of 5 stars Fundamental recording icon !
I am not a hard fan of Leonard Bernstein , but there are exceptional cases like this in which you simply have yo say : Bravo Maestro !
5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific performances
I bought this CD a few years ago just to for the "Symphonic Suite from On the Waterfront," which is one of my all-time favorite classic film scores. The NYPO's performance is very robust and energetic, and easily the best version available of the piece.Bernstein recorded this same piece again many years later with the Israel Philharmonic, but I found it lacking the same drive and passion as the earlier one.The NYPO really captures the mood of New York and the struggle of the dockworkers, as Bernstein envisioned for the film. And they also splendidly perform the love theme, too.Read more

There's something for every Tchaikovsky lover on this disc. From Swan Lake to Onegin, many of Tchaikovsky's most-known melodies are on this disc. 1-0 out of 5 stars Dreadful, isn't it?
What you get here is one more review from a person who has not heard this compilation. But don't be hasty to skip it. I will try to make it informative.
5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful compilation of classical music.
This is a perfect introduction to classical music and I do not understand some of the overtly negative criticism from others. It is an excellent way to "get your feet wet," so to speak and then you can decide which composers you wish to become more familiar with. You would have to buy quite a few CDs to experience all this set has to offer.Although the CD title is tongue-in-cheek...and perhaps that is what people object to...there is nothing to criticize here.

1-0 out of 5 stars I doubt people who hate classical music would buy this
I figure this set is mainly for people who want to teach themselves to appreciate classical music. However, it's not how I started out (age about 17). In those days nobody seemed to think anyone would want to learn how to listen to classical music. I was held up by my family as a real freak. :-) Anyway, at the time, World Record Club was run by people with a wide knowledge of classical music (whereas today it's run by market-driven managers who know nothing about it) so I was able to buy LPs at such reasonable prices it didn't matter if I later found I didn't like what I'd bought. I could have done with some guidance, of course, because I honestly couldn't tell the difference between Bach and Bartok; that's how bad my listening skills were. One of my first Bach recordings was definitely not one I would recommend to a beginner (Menuhun's performance of The Musical Offering) so I could have landed up deciding I didn't like Bach. If this type of production is what it takes to bring more people to classical music, then I guess it has to be a good thing. I've given it only one star because there is no way I would want to own it! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Just for kids?? No way!!
This is wonderful classical music. If the kids like it, great! But, make no mistake about it, this is good for anyone. This is wonderful study music, reading music, or just plain relaxing music.Highlights include "Parade of the Wooden Soldiers"; "March of the Toys" (from BABES IN TOYLAND -- the reason I bought this CD); "The Sorcerer's Apprentice"; "The Little Train of Caipira" (no longer little when the music is over); and the audience favorite "Hoedown" (i.e. "Beef, it's what's for dinner!").
5-0 out of 5 stars The best classical album for kids!
This is a wonderful album. Very high quality, and every selection is beautiful. My daughter (who usually asks me to turn my classical music off) loves to pretend to gallop like a horse during "Rodeo" and march like a soldier during "Parade of the wooden soldiers". This is a pleasure for the whole family!

The sound quality is out of this world!! you just want to get on the floor and dance!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Gold Record for Mantovani!
This remarkable CD was first released on LP in 1953 and re-released in stereo sound in 1958. It was one of Maestro Mantovani's classic gold records, an enormous favorite then and now. These are the original London/Decca recordings so you will hear the brilliance of the authentic Mantovani sound. To some, it may be hard to imagine today, but this album of Strauss waltzes meticulously orchestrated by the late Mantovani stayed on Billboard's charts for about 60 weeks, reaching as high as #7. For those who cannot get enough of Mantovani LPs on CD, scoop this one up fast and enjoy Vienna through the creative lush sounds created by the world's greatest light orchestra leader.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Strings Everywhere!!
This CD has strings galore. You'll never hear strings sound so beautiful as on this particular recording of Strauss waltzes.Mantovani and his orchestra have achieved something quite special and lovely. The waltzes have an added lightness to them.Instead of heavy sluggish playing by the strings, you hear a bouncy sheer beauty in the string section---truly the gem of this CD.These pieces were recorded in the late 50's but sound magnificent. The sound that London/Decca was able to create back then was astounding.Highlights (personal favorites) on this disc are of course the Blue Danube, Emporer Waltz, and Du und Du.On top of the great sound, playing, and conducting, you'll get this CD at a bargain basement price. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars the last disc of 3.the greatest set in music history.
this is the last disc of the 3 disc set.its supposed to stimulate the creative juices.it gets your seritonin going like prozac.well,ok.but,anyway,its quite good.my favorite song on it just goes to show how inspirational the genius mozart was.he was alive in like 1770 and was dead by 30.he did this song and it was catchy.much later it was put to words with the tune still intact as "twinkle twinkle little star".so itll help the kids off to bed,but then someone else took the old indian created english alphabet and put it to music."the abc song" was also put to the same tune and now teaches millions of children to take thier 1st steps towards learningto read and write every day.it was also the very first recorded music when thomas edison 1st tested the phonograph sucessfully.its what he used.on this album thier are many fast paced[as fast as they get]songs that stimulate your brain.i dont personaly need any help in the creative department and just listen for the wonderful music.the twinkle twinkle little star song is like 12 minutes long and the performer uses mozarts innovative style to play it in literaly dozens of different ways.ballad, bedtime, frenzied, more notes, less notes, you name it!then theres a whole bunch of other great songs on it.if you call yourself a music lover and havent at least heard these songs, then you are sadly mistaken.a musical landmark!

4-0 out of 5 stars Upbeat, but pleasant

Editorial Review

Two hundred years after Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's death, French physician Dr. Tomatis discovered a relationship between listening and learning. Remarkably, he found that children develop their listening ability in the womb. According to medical studies, we now know that the music of Mozart in particular has a profound effect on the human mind, body, and spirit. Working in accordance with this philosophy, internationally known teacher and musician Don Campbell wrote Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars We Love These!!!
Our whole famiy loves these CDs! They are very relaxing to listen to while playing games, drawing, or building! I'm no music expert, but I thought the sound quality was good. We listen to them almost everyday! In fact, our kids request 'Mozart music' when playing and it does seem to help keep them focused on one thing for quite some time. :)

I listen to this CD while reading or when I need inspiration to play the piano. There are many classic pieces here that will have many recognizable sections to the non classical music fans. The sound quality is not amazing but the essence and technical difficulty of these pieces can still be heard. Most of the songs are under 5 mins and there is a mix of faster and slower tempos.

Stravinsky summons the raw, primitive power, and emotional intensity of this work, and gives it a fresh, almost light touch, very different from other versions of this work. The Petruska is also very good, but Stravinsky tends to take everything at a slightly too quick pace.
5-0 out of 5 stars From the Master
I had the great good fortune to attend a concert of Stravinsky's music partially conducted by Stravinsky himself in Beverly Hills, CA.I don't remember the exact year, but it would have been in the late '60s.In other words, just a few years before his passing.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars You never have enough Ravel - just never.
This two disk set is one of those that you should add to your collection because it is wonderful music, sounds great, and is extremely affordable.Everyone knows and loves "Bolro".Commissioned by Ida Rubinstein as a ballet and premiered in 1928 was not a musical success. At another performance, led by Toscanini, Ravel complained that the tempo was too fast.Toscanini replied that it was the only way to save the work. But it soon became a mass success to Ravel's surprise and consternation. He felt they loved it for all the wrong reasons. The violinist Hlne Jourdan-Morhange relates this interesting story of one incident involving the work:
5-0 out of 5 stars The Best of Ravel By Master Conductor And Orchestra
French-Canadian conductor Charles Dutoit and the Motneral Symphony Orchestra deliver what is the most musically satisfying collection of Ravel Bolero's French music. At a fine price, this is a fine jewel, with moments that sparkle and burn with a beautiful fire. The first track is of course the famous Bolero, with its hypnotic, singular theme that is expanded into a climatic crescendo which is overtly sexual, primal and sensuous. It was originally a ballet about a Spanish dancer (dancing the bolero of course) in a bawdy cafe. She is spurred on to dance even more erotically by the lusty men until we can assume the men can take no more. The Rhapsody Espagnole is an evocative portrait of Spain, with lyrical passages and tonal beauty. The Valse is another classic of French music of the early 20th century. Ravel's mother had died prior to the premiere. It is a slow, romantic waltz that escalates into a frenzied dance of death. In musical terms, there is nothing too different from La Valse and Bolero. They are both basically one motif that is repeated but changes in volume and pacing. The Pavane For A Dead Princess is my favorite work of his. It is possibly the most gorgeous funeral music one will ever hear. Far from being a melancholy piece, it is a stately, Renaissance-like work that pays homage to exoticism of the East and Romanticism of the West. The Dead Princess we assume is either Moorish or Spanish and the music is lilting and spiritual without ever reaching the heights of frustration or despair that Bolero or Valse take on. The Tomb of Couperin is also a funereal piece but its beauty lies in its imitation of Baroque music. Couperin was a Baroque composer of keyboard works. The music is aptly called neo-baroque or neoclassical since it was composed in the 20th century. This same style is embedded in Valses Nobles Et Sentimentales and Minuet Antique- all works that reflect the music of the Baroque and classical eras, an homage to Handel and Gluck. Daphne Et Cloe is perhaps his most ambitious work, as it expands on the Baroque classic and makes it more operatic and orchestrally grander. All fans of Ravel will want to own this recording. Dutoit knows this music down to a T and the orchestra captures nuance and subtlety in a variety of both light and dark textures. The music is brimming with life and the sound is crisp and beautifully remastered.

The recording is well done.Eric Satie is not the type of music that many people will appreciate.I like his music and this particular recording.

5-0 out of 5 stars Got Satie?
... Well folks. This may be the perfect album to get started. This features some of the best-known works by the wierd and witty Erik Satie, including the Gymnopedies (both the original piano and the orchestrated versions), the Gnossiennes, just to name a few.

Editorial Review

For the parent looking to ease their child into a familiarity with classical music, this is a very well chosen set of Beethoven works. It begins with a generous selection of airs composed late in the composer's life. The presence of the flute as the lead instrument on these selections has a soothing quality that moves the ear in an ideally subtle way, especially as it gives way to the more excited piano sonata pieces. Zoltán Kocsis's reading of "Pathétique" is followed by Claudio Arrau's take on the 7th, 15th, and 18th sonatas and Sviatoslav Richter's lyrical take on the 20th ("Pastoral"). Programmed amidst the piano pieces, which are great studies in dynamics and musical spacing, are some fine orchestral snippets, none longer than five minutes. The collection does a fine balancing act, condensing works that don't inherently lend themselves to shortened renditions and carefully managing moods, entry, and egress to each segment. This is fine anthology work. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Nicest classical CD I have found for my baby (& me)
This is a very pleasant CD to listen to, and I think the quality of the music is excellent. I enjoy listening to this with my 10 month old son, and we also listen to the radio and lots of modern music. I recently purchased 5 of the classical "Baby Einstein" CDs and I consider them to be inferior to this Beethoven for Babies CD. The Baby Einstein are very synthesized sounding and I think they are annoyingly mellow and kind of dopey. This Beethoven CD is beautiful. In fact I'm going to buy 1 or 2 more from this series.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ode To Beethoven
The actual reason I bought this cd is for "Fur Elise" but it turned out to be much more than I bargained for. Before road rage sets in while sitting in a traffic jam during rush hour, play this.If you need to take it easy and escape from your reality, play this.Need something to play at work that's not explicit or offensive, play this.Of course, it's not Beethoven himself, but if you need some quiet time, play this.Even while you read, you could play this.If you want some authenticity to your collection, get Beethoven for Babies.

3-0 out of 5 stars Pseudoscientific crap, but some of the music is good here
The 3 stars is only because the hucksters that put this together at least had the decency to tracks featuring Arrau & Richter on this CD.A lot of these "turn your baby into a genius with classical music" CDs and tapes feature only lousy musical performances from hack musicians you have never heard of.Read more
