ENJOYED ANDRE RIEU ON PBS SO I BOUGHT THE ALBUM I WAS NOT DISAPPOINTED!

3-0 out of 5 stars Songs were omitted
I agree this CD is awesome BUT, and big but here, a LOT of songs on the DVd were omitted here. Especially L'Italiano which is one of my favorites. I have both the DVD and CD. The DVD is much better.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of my Favorites!
Tuscany, both the CD and DVD are absolutly wonderful! I love the setting in la piazza de repubblica in Cortona, Tuscany...it just adds that much more to the atmosphere. The song choices are beautiful, as well as the orchestra. Another one of Andre's which i highly recommend ... Read more

Perfect music to end the work day. After listening to this I can face the evening. If the morning is hard, a little at lunch time gets me through the afternoon.

5-0 out of 5 stars Greatly enjoy!
I first developed a taste for this music a number of years ago when my daughter started playing in the orchestra. The reason I made this purchase however, was because I have a great deal of difficulty with anxiety and I was looking for ways to find help. I love these CDs. It helps so much to sit and close my eyes and enjoy the music. The CDs are full of beautiful music.

Happy is the composer who has an advocate as passionate and talented asLeonard Bernstein. These Copland performances have been the preferred versionssince they were first issued--better even than the composer's own, laterrecordings. Originally they were spread over two discs, but thanks to theextended playing time of the compact disc, you can now get all three greatCopland ballets together, along with the ever popular Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Sound paints pictures of America
Copland shows us why it's called classical while still giving audiences something anyone can enjoy. I highly recommend this CD to people who want to learn to appreciate classical music or introduce their kids to it. Aaron Copland blends American history (sounds of "Simple Gifts") with sprightly sound and sweeping romance to create treasures that paint a visual picture for the listener. Highly recommend. The drive to work would be unbearable without this CD!

5-0 out of 5 stars AN absolute treasure
I believe that for a person not to have this CD in their collection woujld be a sign that they just do not know what great music is.
5-0 out of 5 stars Copland/Bernstein on SACD
These pieces are now availible on SACD, and as great as the CD is, the SACD version is breathtaking. I have owned these pieces on LP and cassette in my youth, but these works really "open up" in multichannel SACD with an extremely wide dynamic range and soundstage. Lenny was a personal friend of Copland and was a great admirer of his works. The performances here show his love and respect for these works. I have heard other conductors, but none come close to the exciting interpretations given here. Leonard Slatkin and the St. Louis Symphony come a close second...but these are the definitive interps. The SACD multichannel version really out classes the CD version...but, alas, it doesn't seem to be offered on Amazon! ... Read more

good song selection, but horribly recorded. the sound is too contaminated.

2-0 out of 5 stars hmmmm
definitely not the best rendition of the popular suite.on the other hand, try finding another one.
2-0 out of 5 stars Good Introduction but poor quality
This is a good introduction to Tchaikovsky for the beginner that gives a broad sampling of his work. Considering the price, it's a good value if someone is just wanting to begin exploring classical music or Tchaikovsky in particular.

3-0 out of 5 stars 3 1/2 stars for interpretation, sound and packaging
The reviews here of this performance remind me of the reviews a few years back of a woman's rendition of a couple Bach cantatas. They focused on the beauty of her singing and nothing else.
4-0 out of 5 stars Tchaikovsky: Violin Concerto
I ordered it because I like Joshua Bell who is the violinist on this recording and because I like Tchaikovsky.I was not dissapointed.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Tchaikovsky concerto has rarely been peformed with such beauty and finesse
Nothing helps a warhorse like a great artist applying a new twist. Right now the world is flooded with fire-eating Russian virtuosos who play the Tchaikovky violin concerto with abandon. Joshua Bell's technique is as good as tehirs, and his tone excels almost everyone in sweetness and purity. Combining those strengths, he's recorded a refined, often reflective reading. Tilson Thomas concuts in perfect agreement. There's plenty of dazzling display, but Bell has decided to take the music seriously. He carefully molds every phrase, and in so doing we hear a stream of interesting detail.

4-0 out of 5 stars Shostakovich Jazz Album
An excellent rendition of Shostakovich's two jazz suites plus his Piano Concerto #1. However, I've heard Rostropovich conduct all three in person, and would welcome a recording of his, since he was a great friend of Shostakovich's. It hasn't been done, and until it is, this will suffice as a fine addition to any classical library.
5-0 out of 5 stars Shostakovich the Jazz Guy
If Shostakovich had decided to write in the Russian folk idiom, this CD would probably be the best glimpse into that genre.
5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderfully engaging light music fromShostakovich
Who knew Shostakovich had such a sense of humor? This disc is delightfully entertaining and sparkles a the turn-of-the century cosmopolitan sound that is simultaneously reminiscent of Milhaud, Gershwin, and Ibert. The result is something supremely different. It's certainly worth a listen or two. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Legend!
This is the greatest compilation of recordings ever made by the legendary pianist Van Cliburn. Although I am a cellist, I wear this cd out on a regular basis both at the office and home. I actually have an extra copy to play at the office. All of these recordings are superb in sound quality, performance and incredibly inspiring. The Schumann, Chopin, Rachmaninoff and Liszt pieces are stellar and my personal favorites. I only wish there were dvd's with Cliburn's performances so those of us too young to have seen him in a live performance. CD is a must-have for any classical music lover's collection.

Editorial Review

In pianist Leon Fleisher's return to playing with both hands, an indomitable spirit has triumphed over physical adversity. Not that he has been absent from music since losing the use of his right hand to focal dystonia in 1965: in addition to forging a successful career as teacher and conductor, he performed the left-hand literature with peerless mastery, enlarging it with new commissions. However, he persisted in searching for a cure, and his determination has now borne fruit: this is his first record of the two-hand repertoire in 40 years. It is altogether extraordinary. Always a great pianist and musician, Fleisher has lost none of his powerful, consummate technique (not surprisingly, his left hand is enormously strong), his rhythmic and tonal control, his expressive projection. His sound is ravishingly beautiful, rich, full, singing, delicate, capable of infinite variations of dynamics, color and nuance; his intellectual and emotional concentration are riveting. The program features familiar short pieces and Schubert's great last sonata. Two Bach transcriptions, one by Myra Hess, one by Egon Petri, are overloaded and artificial, but played with reverential simplicity; a Scarlatti Sonata is scintillating without being fast; a Chopin Mazurka and Nocturne and Debussy's "Clair de lune" are frankly sentimental, very poetic, free, slow and dreamy. They invite the listener to focus on the playing rather than the music. The Schubert is monumental. Fleisher's vitality and exuberance belie his 75 years, though his impetuosity sometimes leads to jerkiness (in the Scherzo), and rushed tempi (in the Finale). His dynamics can be wayward, but the texture, even at its richest, is always crystal clear; every line stands out, indeed some seem newly discovered. There is plenty of time for reposeful rests, poised transitions, changes of harmony, color and mood; the sense of depth, breadth, coherence and continuity never falters. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Five Stars and a Laurel Wreath
Whether you elect to acquire this recording as a treasure of a modern day hero who overcame enormous obstacles that would have destroyed a lesser human being, or whether you simply want some definitive performances of some of the most beloved works in the piano literature, this recording by Leon Fleisher is one of the most rewarding CDs to be released in a long time.
5-0 out of 5 stars Relaxed assuredness
Fleisher came to my school a few years ago playing his Carnegie Hall program which is mainly featured on this disc. A friend of mine I think put it best, "He didn't play the piano he worked with it. The fingers moved, the hammers hit the strings and a state of absolute ecstasy descended on the crowd who were absolutely spellbound for the entire recital." In the age of younger and younger "virtuosos" this is a welcome return to the art of serving the music, not vice versa. The Bach pieces act as a warm-up to the rest of the recital. The night pieces by Debussy and Chopin take us into a dark world of colors and beauty. The Schubert sonata finishes the recital with a monumental work played immaculately. The balance between the hands is perfect and the clarity of the notes is the best I have ever heard in a pianist since a brilliant young virtuoso recorded the Brahms concertos with George Szell fifty years ago. Also pick up his left hand recitals as they are just as dazzling. This is easily the best solo piano release of the last half century. Wonderful!

5-0 out of 5 stars "Nobody can be ever compared to this giant..."
I was recently discussing the quality of this Fleisher's recording with my friend Leontsky, himself composer and pianist. We were both enthusiastic.I cannot resist reporting what Leontsky told me about that album : " The fact is nobody can be ever compared to this giant...He's the tenderness personified, the tenderness itself...whereas Gould, for example, is the Mind itself...Just listen to the Mazurka in C# minor or the Db major Nocturne played by Fleisher!...Fleisher hasn't two hands, he has one single Heart...Nobody can play like this without the intelligence of the Heart...I remember Busoni's old version of the famous Bach Choral...we are so far from Busoni...Fleisher is far beyond because he's understood what i've myself searched for years and years : how to sing through a piano...and, here, in this unbelievable recording, this piece of wood we call pianoforte suddenly becomes Fleisher's voice."

I actually found mine chaper, $20.00 even and the music is outstanding. If you had a very bad day and very stressed out, just put in one of these cds, lay down, dim down the lights and just relax. It really helped me out.

Editorial Review

Bela Fleck is one of the greatest five-string banjo players performing today. Beginning in the 1970s, he honed his lightning-fast chops performing bluegrass, then moved on to contemporary jazz and fusion sounds. With this album, he broadens his horizons once again by performing an entire program of classical music transcriptions. Reminiscent of classical guitar albums by John Williams (who makes a guest appearance here), the disc traverses a wide range of repertoire--from Chopin mazurkas to Bach's Two and Three Part Inventions. Throughout, Fleck displays a feathery touch on his banjo, and his instrument offers a pleasant, brassy tone with very little twang. The technique he displays on Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Bela Fleck Masterpiece!
Who knew there could be classical banjo. It may sound dumb to some of you, but Bela Fleck pulls it off perfectly.I prefer the jazz fusion of his work with the Flecktones, but that does not mean this is not brilliant.Technically speaking, Bela and all of his collaborators are the best around, and who can argue with the songwriting of the classical composers(no one openly insults Mozart). If you haven't heard Bela Fleck, here's some advice.Get one of his Flecktones albums if you're into jazz, rock, or funk, this if you like classical, and his Newgrass Revival, Strength in Numbers, or Sam Bush stuff if you're a bluegrass fan.

5-0 out of 5 stars Definitely a Winner
It is apparent to my ears why this CD won a Grammy. It takes familiar classical music pieces and puts the distinct Bela Fleck style on them. The pairing of the banjo with different instruments makes this album texturally interesting for the ear and one does not tire of the selections, even if they are familiar. My favorite pairing is the marimba with the banjo. The liner notes are interesting, as is Bela's story on how difficult it was to make the album. It was definitely worth his time and the listener's .

Editorial Review

The idea here was to put two masters together--one classical cellist, one improvisational singer/sound-effects performer--and voilà! instant amazing, unique, hip--and, hopefully, hit--record. The intriguing setup was to see whatwould happen when each led the other through the unfamiliar territory of his ownspecialty. The success of this recording lies not so much in the music or even inthe overall performances, but in the fascinating and fun opportunity to sit in onthe musicians' good-natured, respectful give-and-take, to witness an uncommonform of artistic chemistry that allows each performer to expand his vision andeven his technique. On one hand we get Bobby McFerrin's impressionistic, improvisatory jazz/pop; on the other we enjoy Yo-Yo Ma's highly refined, formalized musicianship. 5-0 out of 5 stars Yo-Yo keeps on experimental
One of the best parts of a genius is to try out of his layers. In this case Yo-Yo tried to go out from the classic, and with a very good singer, in a easy say, as Bobby. They make a very special music between classic and jazz, with some elements of pop.
5-0 out of 5 stars This is no "Don't Worry, Be Happy"
Have never been a big Bobby McFerrin fan, probably due to that god-awful, "Don't Worry, Be Happy."But I am a classical music junkie and one day listening to our local classical station I heard a selection that I thought was the most beautiful thing I had ever heard. What a shock when I learned that it was McFerrin and Yo-Yo Ma doing Vivaldi's Andante!
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent CD!
While I admit to being a newbie in my connoisseurship of the classical music genre, not only do I think that this disc is a good collection of some of the best classical music ever written, it is actually FUN sometimes, with silly bits thrown in by Bobby and Yo-Yo Ma every now and then! These guys make great music and have a great time making it.

It's hard to believe now that Walt Disney's bold 1940 impressionistic experiment in wedding then-state-of-the-art animation with classical music was a rather resounding failure upon its release. The cliché proves the rule: Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantasia soundtrack
I'm a massage therapist and i bought the cd to listen to while working on my clients and both me and my clients like it alot.

1-0 out of 5 stars Complaint
I thought that I was ordering a DVD of the original movie, which I remember seeing when it first was screened. To receive only the sound track, without any animation, was annoying to say the least. Your description of the offered product could have been more explicit.

1-0 out of 5 stars Unlistenable.
Don't get me wrong, Fantasia is one of my favorite movies and Stokowski my favorite conductor--a true genius. The problem is that these CDs were "restored" ("destroyed" would be a better word) by someone who has no idea what music sounds like. In a desperate attempt to preserve our ears from any (gasp!) noise, a brutal gating filter was used to destroy any semblance of the sound of real instruments. And, since optical recording of the time had very poor treble response, what treble there is has been boosted mercilessly, resuting in shrill, screechy strings. I really cannot bear to listen to these CDs.

2-0 out of 5 stars Christmas Extraordinaire
I am a fan of Mannheim Steamroller and had high expectations for this CD.This is not quite as good as their older Christmas Cd's. It is ok but far from what it could have been.

3-0 out of 5 stars Doesn't Really meet the test of time
With no offense intended to Mannheim Steamroller, I just wasn't very excited about this CD.Probably the best thing on here is the Nutcracker selection, but nothing stands out as being original or a fresh look at music. The best thing I think that can be said about it came from my father, who heard it at Christmas, and said "At least it doesn't sound like all their other music."So, if you are tired of hearing the standard radio playlist of Chip Davis, this might be refreshing. On the other hand, if none of the selections from CHRISTMAS EXTRAORDINAIRE are being played, then probably none are very good (or popular).
4-0 out of 5 stars Good, but not outstanding
I have all of the Mannheim Steamroller Christmas cd's in my collection. While I enjoyed this one, it's just not quite as good as the prior releases. It seems to lack the lively sparkle that characterizes their other cd's. The music is still nice, and it's a good addition to my collection. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars VALUE FOR MONEY
Dame Moura is my favourite pianist. Her great style and sublety of expression comes out in all her recordings. this CD is the best value for money ever!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good bang for the buck.
I was killing some time in the store the other day and was in the mood for a cheap CD for the car for the ride home. I ran across this and saw a few recognizable titles so for about $5 I figured I'd take a chance. I'm fairly impressed, I wasn't crazy about some of her dynamics in Un Sospiro plus her little added frill in there but still enjoyed it...I'd learned that piece myself years back, still can't play it and probably never will! Another piece I've known for years is the infamous Rachmaninov Prelude in C#m. Again, I wasn't crazy about some of the dynamics of her style but she still nails it without a hitch. Then I got to some other interesting pieces, I love the Debussy Golliwog's Cakewalk...really sticks in your head. Sort of a classisized (?) ragtime and it's cool enough that I'm going to dig through my music and see if I don't have it somewhere. I thought the Chopin Etude in C#m was absolutely fabulous, she just cooks through it from beginning to end. I probably have the music for that too...I'm not even going to attempt it! ;-) In fact, I liked all the Chopin she plays here, it seems she had a real flair for his music. Without going on forever here I'll just say that there are several tracks I listen to extensively on here and I'm fairly impressed. For a lousy $5 how can you go wrong? Just buy the thing! I'd never heard of her before so I just did a little 'net searching and I'm saddened to find that she just passed away about 8 months ago at age 88, truly a loss to the classical music world. In any case, even at twice the price I doubt anyone would be disappointed with this CD.

5-0 out of 5 stars Really good price.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not A Music Critic ... But A Lover Of All Music ...
Let's not be too harsh regarding this CD. I purchased this as my first baby step into the classical genre and it absolutely made me fall in love with classical music and appreciate it in a way I never could when people tried to make me like it.It is such a wide variety of classical music and I find romance to be joyful, tragic, gentle, harsh & a complete roller coaster that I found all in this ONE CD!It also made my boyfriend who hates, or shall I say HATED classical music NOW like it!That was an amazing feat!We now have many classical cd's and we always go back to this one for dinner parties, romantic baths and other things...I played this CD so much, that it got damaged and I just purchased another one to replace the one I bought years ago.If you are a critic, stay away from this cd, you will rob it of its beauty & innocence. If you are a beginner and want to open your mind to all that classical music has to offer, then this is the best money you can spend.BUY & ENJOY!!!

3-0 out of 5 stars Misleading title scheme
This is what bothered me about the CD.Three of the biggest eras in classical music were: the baroque era, the classical era, and the romantic era. Now, with CD's titled baroque favorites, classical favorites and romantic classics, one would expect these CD's to be era specific.Such is not the case.If you read the back of the CD it even says "from the romantic era of music", but the there are composers like Vivaldi (baroque) and Debussy (impressionism) on this CD.About more than half are from the wrong eras.So this music is romantic in the non-musical sense of the word, which is fine, but a little bit misleading.

2-0 out of 5 stars Don't Bother...Really!
Not what I call classical composers! THis cd is annoying in a way I really can't stand. It lacks the pure elegance of the classical days. Don't buy this cd unless you want a phony all around bad album played by cheap ameteurs. ... Read more

I used this CD as part of a dance history class on American Modern Dance, in conjunction with a DVD on dance pioneer Martha Graham. The music stands alone, and my students got a bit of music history along with their dance history.

5-0 out of 5 stars Copland performed at its best
This CD is one of my favorites in my classical collection.Several years ago, I borrowed this recording from the library, and enjoyed it so much that I went out and bought my own Copland CD.I got the CD containing the New York Philharmonic's performance of Appalachain Spring (conducted by Bernstein), but was sorely disappointed. After a few months of searching (this was pre-Amazon days), I tracked down this CD and bought it.The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra is superb.I highly recommend this CD for any Copland fan, or anyone who wants to have a "token" classical CD. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent renditions of lively 'old music'.
'Sinners & Saints' by Philip Pickett and the New London Consort is just a bit too ambitious with their subtitle, 'The Ultimate Medieval and Renaissance Music Collection' as I find it hard to believe that 70 minutes can be the ultimate anything on 500 years of history. This is especially true since they seem to focus
