Editorial Review

Thanks to good marketing, good cover art, and good luck, this discprobably has sold more copies than most other recordings of Gregorian chant puttogether. It's often quipped that most of those discs have been listened toexactly once and put away--to the puzzlement of many musicians and critics, whopoint out that there are more beautiful, more varied performances byprofessional singers available. Yet the singing of these Spanish Benedictineshas a special quality that probably explains this disc's popularity--a reverentserenity that no doubt stems from the fact that the monks are actually praying, not just performing. 5-0 out of 5 stars Gregorian Chant
I purchased this item because one of my children has been going through the Tomatis method of auditory integration training to correct some auditory processing issues that affect his ability to communicate. The Gregorian Chant was recommended as a follow up because of its many and pure sound frequencies. After listening to different samples of the Chant, I picked the one sung by the Monks of Santo Domingo de Silos for its sound clarity. Also, it has been interesting to see the reaction of all my children. Two of them weep when they listen to the chant and the other one seems be soothed by it.As an adult, it is this soothing effect from the Benedictine Monks of Santo Domingo de Silos that I find most fascinating.

5-0 out of 5 stars RELAXING
EXCELLENT FOR RELAXING, MEDITATION, OR INTROSPECTION.WHEN I HAVE HAD A BAD DAY, I POP THIS IN ON MY WAY HOME FOR RELAXATION.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Standard Bearer for the Genre! Calm, Peaceful, Beautiful!
I have to admit that when I got this disc, it was more out of curiousity as it had done very well commercially and although I had read about Gregorian Chants, I had no idea what they were and thought that this would be a good way to find out.

I haven't seen the show, but I certainly hope it works better on stage with visuals than it does listening to this tepid CD. Not a memorable note of music in the entire score.

4-0 out of 5 stars Such an awesome musical, but it wasn't the cast I saw, but a great soundtrack!
I loved this musical when I went to see it in late March of 2006. But unforutunately the only reason why I didn't give this 5 stars is because this soundtrack doesn't have exactly what I saw on stage, and I loved that better. This is an awesome soundtrack though.
5-0 out of 5 stars Good old dirty rotten fun
At first, I borrowed this from the library because I love Norbert Leo Butz. He was very good in Wicked, but the part of Freddy Benson seems made for him. I can't wait to see the show; the entire cast is amazing. Some of my favorite tracks:

5-0 out of 5 stars Good performances, good CD
I prefer the slow songs on this CD, they seems to be a better fit for my baby. The performances are well played by talented musicians. (I have a degree from Peabody so that's a true compliment)

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
My baby is 4 months old and absoletly loves this CD. At 6pm when he gets fussy, this is the only thing that calms him down and allows him to go to sleep. It is well worth every penny!

My daughter is now almost 5 years old and she still listens to the same CD she did at 5 months old.She is very bright and is doing amazing in her Junior Kindergarten class. She has always loved music, but she can't fall asleep unless we put on her Mozart CD.I would recomend it to any new or expectent parents, or even to parents who have a hard time putting toddlers to bed.It is a very soothing CD to listen to. ... I love Andrea Bocelli and this is, by far, my favorite CD.The first time I heard the title song, I had goosebumps.I played it three times in a row. It's simply beautiful.I also love A Volte Il Cuori. I would highly recommend this CD for anyone who loves classical singing and certainly for all Bocelli fans.

5-0 out of 5 stars Delightful
The music takes a little bit to grow on you, but boy, does it!It's wonderful, charming, romantic, funny--just like the play itself.I loved almost every song and I was really impressed with "Long As I'm Here With You"-- I thought it was an old song written back in the twenties, because it so sounded like one. The cast is absolutely energetic and endearing, and Sutton Foster just *rocks*.Definitely worth the money.

5-0 out of 5 stars YOU WILL LOVE IT
If you like musicals, you will NOT REGRET purchasing this musical soundtrack. JUST DO IT. It's so great, you will be listening to it forever. I also saw the show at the Kennedy Center in D.C. and it's one of the best I've ever seen. (And I've seen A LOT.)

What is there left to say about this musical, deservedly one of the most famous in the canon? Created by what lyricist Stephen Sondheim described as "a unique concatenation of people" (Leonard Bernstein, Sondheim, Arthur Laurents, Jerome Robbins), the show remains as explosively vibrant, daring, and modern as it was decades ago. Bernstein integrated Latin percussion and jazz into his electrifying score, dazzlingly translating New York's unique vitality into a musical idiom. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Problem With Disc?
I have noticed on the Rumble Track - at the 12/13 s mark, what appears to bea high pitched click - Might have to turn up the volume to hear clearly. Is this a manufacturing defect that was never rectified

4-0 out of 5 stars Still Going Strong After All These Years
First of all, I bought the CD of WSS from BMG not sure if it was the Broadway or Movie cast since they didn't include the cast or a list of the tracks. I love the songs in this musical, from the camaraderie of Jet Song to the romantic Tonight, to the hilarious Gee, Officer Krupke, to the sad Finale. I have always compared the feeling of Tonight to We Kiss in the Shadows from The King and I. Still, however wonderfully these performers sound, I don't feel Chita Rivera's America can touch the vibrancy of Rita Moreno. I also preferred the way the guys and gals traded verses in the movie version of America, like when Bernardo's listing of unpleasant things in America was countered by Anita's "You forget I'M in America!" I never saw the play so I was puzzled at hearing I Feel Pretty so late on the disk, Gee, Officer Krupke sung after, not before, the rumble, and Cool sung before rather than after the same rumble. Good as the Broadway cast sounds, I still much prefer the movie soundtrack.
4-0 out of 5 stars Better than the Movie
To anyone considering buying the music of West Side Story, I would strongly recommend the original Broadway Cast over the movie sound track.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's a SHOCK!
It's a SHOCK how Callas interpreted "Madama Butterfly" It's close to perfect. Must listen for opera lovers!

5-0 out of 5 stars Perhaps The Best Recorded "Madama Butterfly"
There are many "Butterfly" recordings out there that are excellent in their own right but this recording deserves a category of excellence all it's own. What almost looks like mis-casting on paper, Callas does an astonishing job with the title role, which she recorded months before singing a series in Chicago and never to touch the role again. This is really one of those recordings that should be considered an historical event in the history of recorded opera. The collaboration of all the principles with von Karajan shows a unique unity that hasn't been duplicated very often.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best You'll See from Sarah
This CD is - wow!I have so much to say about it and so little time! This album features three pieces from "The Phantom of the Opera" - Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again, The Music of the Night, and The Phantom of the Opera theme. They're all beautiful. The second piece on the album is "Unexpected Song".It has beautiful octaves and orchastrations.Chanson d'Efance is an amazing French piece with vibrato - and then some.I forgot to mention that there is another piece from The Phantom of the Opera - All I Ask of You - except that the song is not sung by the original cast from the musical. The next few pieces are fairly decent, until you get to Memory from Cats.WOW - is it spectacular! Then we get to two other pieces from Cats - Gus: The Theater Cat and Macavity: The Mystery Cat.Gus is a song that just tells about a cat and his history.A man speaks the lines that Gus would say in the actual musical - and it makes the song interesting.Macavity is AWESOME!I know that I said that I didn't prefer this song for Brightman on her album "Surrender". I finally listened to it more carefully, and found that it's really interesting to listen to!My favorite song on the whole entire album - however - has to be "Tell Me on a Sunday".Beautiful lyrics, orchestrations, and overall spectacular voice talent ties the whole song together.Pie Jesu is a fairly nice piece from both Brightman and Paul Miles-Kingston - the 16 year old boy soprano. His voice is pure and straight with minimal vibrato. However, Brightman's voice shows a little bit TOO much vibrato!Overally, it's a good piece from Andrew Lloyd Webber's Requium.THIS CD IS AMAZING!If you love Sarah from the Phantom of the Opera, then this collection of Lloyd Webber's work is just for you.

This is the third copy of this I've purchased. I wear them out listening to them. Awesome, Awesome music. Sarah's range and depth is so powerful!

1-0 out of 5 stars Love makes blind, but....... deaf as well???
Andrew Lloyd Webber's music is excellent, but here it's wrapped up in a voice that doesn't do the music any justice at all. There are so many great sopranos out there, but perhaps he chose his wife out of duty or like I suggested before, because love makes deaf as well as blind....?

4-0 out of 5 stars Inspire the baby-within
Beyond sheer musical appreciation and enjoyment, Mozart's music in general is ideal for gently stimulating the "creative centers" as well as instilling a sense well-being.While there is much academic disagreement about the extent or reality of the so-called "Mozart Effect," it doesn't take a genius to observe how Mozart's music puts most people (and probably babies-to-be) in a happy mood ready to take on the day's challenges. There is a simplicity - yet elegance and musical brilliance - in his music that is also well-suited for the youngest of children.
5-0 out of 5 stars Calms your soul.....
Just had to take a moment to write this review. I bought this CD 9 months ago right before the due date of my first baby. Being a new mom and nervous and trying to do everything right, I played this CD the first week home from the hospital. It would totally calm both me and baby and we would rock and rock until he was asleep. I've always loved all kinds of music but having such a peaceful CD to listen to helped me gain my perspective and take a deep breath and just enjoy this new little one I had in my arms. Music does that to me but this CD has something extra special.

Editorial Review

Boston Baroque and Martin Pearlman recorded a splendid set of the Brandenburg Concertos on period instruments in 1993 and 1994. Made entirely in the US, these snappy, crisply articulated, and fluent performances rely heavily on the talents of violinist Daniel Stepner (who doubles as one of the two solo violists in Concerto No. 6). Among the highlights are the joyous finale to Concerto No. 4 and the superb cembalo cadenza in No. 5, played by Pearlman. Along with outstanding sound, there's a winning sense of freshness and discovery in these performances. Read more

the telarc recording is full and detailed as would be expected, but the posthorn player botches a lot of lines, or at least plays them with totally hamfisted phrasing. of course it's probably tough on an older instrument but the end result is that it distracted me from what was probably an otherwise excellent recording.

In this two-cd set of the Bach Crandenburg Concertos, Martin Pearlman and the Boston Baroque do a wonderful job of performing some of the most recognized classics of the genre, on period instruments, none the less.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspirational recording
We have bought three copies of this CD. The combination of familiar hymns, beautiful arrangements, excellent voices and fine symphony musicians keeps us playing it often. The music calms my husband's "road rage," he says, and I like to hum along. We hope the same groups will do a Christmas music recording.

5-0 out of 5 stars More Than 50 Most Loved Hymns
A tremendous set of CDs.The most inspirational music that I have heard in a long time.It uplifts and comforts you amist the trouble and turmoil of this world. It reminds you that a loving "God is in Control".

5-0 out of 5 stars Celestial Divinity Hymns
If you love untainted hymns, you will be blessed by these lofty recorded selections performed by the London Philharmonic Choir and National Philharmonic Orchestra. Two discs compress over fifty hymns to be savored over and over. And no...these are not light and airy, please-every-ear compositions, but are the solid rock truths of the faith. You can even attune to the atoning blood of Christ harmoniously exalted.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gregorian Chant Gems
It is wonderful to hear again the chants that are familiar to all Catholics who grew up with the Latin Mass and who remember the plain chants from the Liber Usualis. Victimae paschali laudes (the Sequence from the Easter Mass), Gaudens gaudebo in Domino (Rejoicing, I shall rejoice in the Lord), Pueri hebraeorum (the beautiful entrance song to the Palm Sunday Mass), and all the other chants. They are performed by a choir that understands the beauty and simplicity of Gregorian Chant.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lost in Meditation: Medatative Gregorian Chants, Vol. 2~Gregorian Chant
Inspirational and definately recommended for anyone looking for a tradional, medatative, inspirational feeling.Very useful to get into a contemplative mindset for daily prayers and meditation.

5-0 out of 5 stars You'll be lost in this meditation!
This is a wonderful CD! Very relaxing and a great example of Gregorian chant. The lyrics are very clear with soaring melodies. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Already a box office sensation with a million-selling soundtrack in its native France, writer/director Christopher Barratier's tale of a post-war music teacher's lasting impact on his young charges rode its formulaic Hollywood roots all the way to Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations as Best Foreign Language Film, as well as an Oscar nod for Best Song ("Look To Your Path [Vois Sur Ton Chemin]," a collaboration between the director and film composer Bruno Coulais). Taking his inspiration from the boy's chorus at the center of the film's drama, Coulais has concocted a masterful, classically rooted score that showcases the crystalline, youthful harmonies of Les Petits Chanteurs de Saint-Marc Choir. The composer bridges the baroque and modern eras in a collection of mostly Latin choruses and chants, a skillful, often haunting fusion that also netted Coulais' compelling score BAFTA and Cesar Awards in Britain and his native France, respectively. 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Soundtrack!
I very much enjoy this soundtrack. However, the only thing that bothers me is the fact that it sounds repetitive.Besides that, it's a great album and if you haven't seen the movie I suggest you do so!

5-0 out of 5 stars Les Choristes
If I could give more than five stars to this movie and soundtrack, I would.I noticed the movie quite by chance while browsing Netflix.I was a French major in College and later became an American French teacher.I many ways, the film reminded me of the rotten experiences I had teaching at a private high school in San Francisco and in the Oakland Unified School District, so I related extremely well to the teacher in the film.Nonetheless, the music is exquisite.I let a Spanish speaking co-worker, who doesn't speak a word of French, hear one of the tracks. He wanted a copy "tout de suite".That's the music's universal appeal.I can't tell you how much I love it.Buy it! You'll love it too.

2-0 out of 5 stars Very poor shipping.
Soundtrack is absolutely wonderful, but the shipping speed is horrible. I ordered one day shipping on a Thrusday, and didn't get it until the next Wednesday! I spent $9.00 extra for nothing! It ruined shopping at Amazon.com ever again for me. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars awesome soundtrack to an awesome movie, but POOR remakes...
the movie is timeless and the soundtrack/score for it goes as follows. none the less, i will deduct a whole star for the second disk entirely. i know disney wants to make more money (and they have every right to), but some of the newer artists have butchered these songs entirely. stick with the original, you won't be disappointed..

3-0 out of 5 stars great first cd, not so great second cd.
The Little Mermaid is my absolute favorite Disney movie of all time. But lately I've become very disappointed because Disney insists on including music videos in a lot of the rereleases of classics with some random Disney Channel actor singing the songs. I understand that a lot of songs out now are remakes, but these are just bad except for Jessica Simpson's version of "Part of Your World", but Ashley Tisdale's version of "kiss the girl" is annoying. ... Editorial Review

The Bacon Brothers say it best on this hilarious CD's titletrack: "Poultry in motion is a beautiful thing." So is a record that grabs you by the funnybone from its opening (the Seldom Herd's "Cows") and doesn't let go till the final note is clucked. Sandra Boynton, whose illustrated board books have become as much a part of everytoddler's reading list as Mother Goose, makes a convincing case herethat authors can succeed brilliantly as very silly songwriters. MerylStreep, Laura Linney, Kevin Kline, Natasha Richardson, and fourteen otherperformers all qualify as contenders for king and queen of the coop, and they whoop it up enough to guarantee the most enjoyable sing-along ever. 4-0 out of 5 stars More uneven than "Rhino Tap" but still a great all-ages listen!
We sort of did this out of order... we got Rhinoceros Tap firstand LOVED it!Then, we took out this one, and it was a bit of a tougher sell.
5-0 out of 5 stars Fun, fun, fun!
I just love these CDs by Sandra Boynton. These are loaded with fun songs you can sing along with.It did take me a few times listening to really get hooked, but now I listen to them even when my kids aren't around
