5-0 out of 5 stars Uniformly excellent
One of the most unique aspects of this disc is the inclusion of the G minor Violin Concerto, thought to be a reconstruction of an earlier work for oboe and harpsichord.
4-0 out of 5 stars Rewarding and excellent value
This CD is a bargain, a wonderful collection of music at a very reasonable price for the quality.
4-0 out of 5 stars good but a tad lacking somewhat.
The bach violin concertos have for me always been something ive always enjoyed listening to over and over. I suppose that is why such music is called classical music - it is timeless and still well loved after 1-2 hundred years after its 1st performance.Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Souless playing by Perlman
At the time of Le Quattro Stagioni's conception, Vivaldi was maestro de' concerti at an all-girl's orphanage. Each year, the orphanage would hold nurmous concerts where adolescent girls would play violin behind a curiously shaded curtain. This curtain would viel everything except for the girls' figures ... and the music.Sensual perhaps, but this is exactly what music-making of the 17th century is like.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great CD chronicling Vivaldi's Four Seasons
Having a taste for classical music led me to buy this particular CD and also being a fan of violin concertos. Despite my bias, I must say this version of the Four Seasons (with some other concertos) is for any who even likes to listen to music, much less of the classical genre. The London Philharmonic complement Itzhak Perlman splendidly. Overall, the value of the CD is amazing. You get 21 tracks. There were a few small miscues in the harmony, but they were few and far between; not to mention I am very critical of instrumentals. 9 out of 10.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lush and brilliant rendition of Four Seasons
Not only does this CD include the Four Seasons concertos, but also 3 other violin concertos (including Il Sospetto, L'estro armonico No. 6, and La Stravaganza #5) making it a good value for the money.Perlman's style is warm, lush and brilliant, giving a more emotional rendition of Vivaldi, versus the usual austere clockwork interpretation.I rather enjoy the extra feeling and lushness that Perlman brings to Vivaldi.By the way, L'estro armonico #6 is familiar to many violin students as a student concerto, and listening to Perlman is very motivating. ... Editorial Review

Itzhak Perlman is the greatest living exponent of the Romantic, sentimental style of violin playing. As in his reading of the Brahms concerto, he shows sovereign mastery in these accounts, which are characterized by intense emotion and heated expression (Perlman's warm vibrato and carefully placed portamentos quickly give him away), but are also gripping in the quiet, meditative pages. The first two sonatas' relationship to songs could easily be guessed from the way Perlman plays them in a single, seamless line, marked by soaring climaxes and tender, haunting pianissimos. The treatment sometimes does seem a bit premeditated, but it is so compelling as to sweep aside any criticism. In this 1983 recording (sonically superior to Perlman's later remake with pianist Daniel Barenboim, for Sony), the violin sounds slightly forward, though not unpleasantly so. Warm, supportive, lyrical playing from Vladmir Ashkenazy rounds out a marvelous offering. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars these are really good sonatas
These three sonatas are in my opinion some of the best compositions of Brahms. They are wonderfully tunefull and each sets a distinct mood (although all three are somewhat melancholic). The interaction of the violin and piano is just fantastic and Perlman and Ashkenazy pull it off well.Sound quality is great as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brahms
I bought this for my college age daughter's music class and I am enjoying it as well.Violin music, of any sort, is enjoyable to listen to and this one is a wonderful addition to a music library.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finest Brahms
I've always enjoyed Brahms' chamber works more than his symphonies. Somehow his intent comes off more clearly; the desperation and anger and melancholy of the music is more exposed, as if juggling an entire orchestra in the composition could dull the edges of these emotions. Of course the quality of any piece is tied with the quality of the performers (who invariably stamp then with their own personalities), and here we have a brilliant union: Perlman and Ashkenazy play flawlessly. Perlman's tonality is clear and sonorous, but never treacly; it still maintains the edge that these pieces require. From the sweet lilting melodies of the first sonata to simmering violence of the third, it is a commanding performance. The piano part in these works is equally demanding, and Ashkenazy is more than a match for Perlman's virtuosity.Read more

    Editorial Review

Pollini's traversal of Chopin's 19 Nocturnes (he leaves out the pair of posthumous ones) is one of his finest recordings in years. His long-lined yet detailed performances are comparable to the very different ones that have long stood at the pinnacle of recorded sets. Not as serene as Artur Rubinstein's, not as philosophical as Claudio Arrau's, nor as warm as Ivan Moravec's, Pollini's interpretations have their own allure. One is the way he shapes the melodies with a natural flow enhanced by his tonal beauty, less lean and streamlined than his usual way with Romantic music. Another is his careful attention to dynamics, as in the subtle gradations of tone found in Op.9 No.1, Op. 15 No 2, and others in the set. Yet another is his detailed articulation that yields trills of feathery lightness and brings out inner details without unduly spotlighting them. His pianissimo playing is radiant, pearly runs are seamlessly strung together, and climaxes like that in Op. 37 No.1 ring out boldly. And this paragon of the objective modern style indulges in discreet rubatos that bring life to the musical line and make you feel the music behind the notes.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Visionary fperformance
When I first purchased this recording, the rather austere interpretations disappointed me.I had been listening to the Pires earlier, and her much more traditional, romantic approach had made a deep impression(still a great accomplishment, better than almost all who precede her recording). However, after a few listenings, Pollini's incredible intellectual command and spiritual interpretation became evident. If someone has listened more romantic playing of these pieces such asArrau's, then Pollini's may seem at first without any beauty or understanding of Chopin's intent because the doesn't linger of phrases, manipulate the tempo by rushing or slowing down in a dreamlike trance.Instead, Pollini finds the true essence in his perfect pianism and his visionary effort here. The sound of the recording is exemplary- I do wish they could have placed the microphones so as not to hear Pollini's occaisional and momentary gutteral utterances and breathing , but a small price to pay to hear Chopin's Nocturnes played with such insight, technique, and understanding.I rank this cd with his playing of the etudes, ballades, and preludes...all of the highest order.

    4-0 out of 5 stars He's back!
These recordings represent something of a return to form for Pollini, whose recordings in recent years have often sounded as if the score had been programmed into that hi-tech Yamaha player piano. Here one senses a sophisticated musical intelligence constantly making judgments and decisions. And, of course, his technique is still highly impressive. His articulation is a thing of wonder and his structural sense is a real asset in these pieces which can often seem diffuse.Still, the performances often seem defined by what is NOT done rather than any individual touches.Rubato is at a minimum and agogic hesitations nonexistent. They are very "come scritto" in what might be considered the Toscanini tradition. As such, they would be an excellent introduction to this music for new listeners.
5-0 out of 5 stars HOLY COW!
According to the DG website, this set was supposed to be released in Novemeber of 2005 -- and it came out 7 months later! What an awful, miserable wait... I wish Pollini weren't on their back-burner, I think he's the best thing they have! This set is ridiculously good, amazing, excellent.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very, very good!!
This Butterfly is quite excellent for many reasons. The singing is outstanding.Price is wonderful, Elias is so good. And, even if I am not a fan of Tucker, he is quite a misguided hero. While not as loud as DelMonaco, he is one hell of a great voice. In the end, this is truly a tragedy of wide proportions.
5-0 out of 5 stars AWESOME!!!
I LOVE it! It's in my car now; Butterfly is about to bid her child farewell :) This does NOT sound like 1962 (let alone RCA, which usually sounds kinda bland to me)! I have yet to hear the famous Barbirolli (and Scotto, whom I do not care for, but also the wonderful Bergonzi! I will get it someday) and I have the Callas in the mail, but this is so great. I heard Leontyne's "un bel di" on my FIRST classical CD, "Opera's Greatest Moments", and I fell in love with it then; in fact, I prefer her rendition above ALL others, including Callas, Freni, Ponselle, et al. By the way, the other singers on this recording are also fabulous! I can only imagine how much more PERFECT this sounds in SACD! I must get a player soon! BUY THIS!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb Remastering
This recording of Madama Butterfly is one of my all time favorites. It was one of the first records that I bought myself in the early 1970's.Since then I have acquired original 1963 LP pressings, UK-made LP's, the the original R2R tape, and the old CD issue, all in hopes of finding the best sounding edition.Up till now, the Reel-Reel tape was the best, apparently avoiding the some of the dull Dynagroove equalization that RCA imposed on this and most of its subsequent 1960's releases.

4-0 out of 5 stars Selection of Songs?
Perlman is a man of extraordinary clarity and tonality also one of my favorite violinists. After I finish practicing a piece I usually find a recording to listen to different interpretations. Most of them are by Perlman and Heifetz. Unfortunately this album has some obscure songs and the songs itself do not do justice to Perlman what some other songs may have done. Still it is important to broaden the scope, so I would recommend this to all music connoisseurs :). btw i'm only 16 so...don't take this review too literal huh?

5-0 out of 5 stars Marvellous!
I don't play violin, and I can't even read music, but as a classical music amateur I find this CD outstanding. Even an incompetent like myself can easily understand why Perlman is regarded as one of the greates violinists ever. This is a marvellous collection of pieces. The rendition of "Chanson Russe" by itself is, in my opinion, worth more than the price of the CD. If you listen to the audio samples on Amazon's pages and you like violin you will surely understand why I like this CD so much. I am grateful to People like Perlman, who make this world a better place to live in.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best violinist ever!
All I can say to this CD is it's the best I've ever heard. In this CD, Itzhak Perlman truly demonstrates his best performances of the past years. I have always been a great admirer of Perlman, but since I own this CD, it's all I've listened to for the past three months. I myself play the violin and Perlman has become an inspiration to me, almost a musical idol. For any of those violinists out there, especially young musicians, who don't feel any excitement about playing the violin, listen to this CD and I promise you, you will strive to being able to play like this man does. He is truly the best musician I've ever known. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Corelli's famous Concerti by my favorite period instrument orchestra and conductor
Trevor Pinnock's recording of Corelli's Op. 6 Concerti grossi will not be to all tastes. Those raised on traditional instrument recordings by such as Max Goberman/Vienna Sinfonietta (Odyssey LPs, circulated in the 1970s) or Paul Angerer/Southwest German Chamber Orchestra (Vox) may not like the clipped articulation and fast tempos Pinnock uses. But the English Concert is a joy to hear: and can THEY PLAY!The allegros sizzle with joy and tension (in the minor key movements) and I find myself unable to resist conducting myself to the rhythmic patterns they generate.I think Corelli would be pleased, and I doubt he ever heard this good a performance of his Opus 6 Concertos.
5-0 out of 5 stars Christmas Concerto
The _Christmas Concerto_ (Opus 6 Number 8) is the best on the CD!If you like Vivaldi's "Four Seasons" or the Bach "Double"but have never heard Corelli's Christmas Concerto, I think you will like it very much.

5-0 out of 5 stars Corelli: Master and Commander of Enchanting Melodies
In a world dominated by Gabrelli and Vivaldi, Corelli's 12 Concerti Grossi (Op. 6) are gems. The performance of Pinnock and the English Concert is superb and the Archive recording crystal clear and in high fidelity. To the inexperienced ear the components of each piece flow together, yet the distinguishable melodies create a relaxing, enjoyable atmosphere -- either for a listener intent on each note, or as atmosphere while going about the day's business or leisure.Guided to this recording by the soundtrack for the movie "Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World," you will be not long into the first of this two CD set before being rewarded for your purchase.Wonderful. ... Watch out for the volume leveling mentioned in another review. Surely the compliers could have come up with a better sort order than by composer. The change in tempo/volume between pieces makes it impossible to enjoy. My two CD's ended up in the trash.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing
I am not going to go into great detail. I am working on a degree in classical guitar and I can say this is something to strive for. His musical interpretation of the peices represented here are some of the best I've heard. His tone, color, and phrasing is incredible.

5-0 out of 5 stars A gentleman musical agreement!
In guitar ` s playing there have been many renowned performers, gifted of exuberant technique. But curiously the Apollonian playing is not by itself strictly enough. The guitar is the instrument which is closer to heart as any other one. It demands from you passion and sentiment. There have been three well known guitarists, one of them from England and the other one from Spain and the third one from Japan whose sensibility was totally absent in their performances.
5-0 out of 5 stars Extreme virtuosity
CP has become my chief inspiration to improve as a classical guitarist. His performances here are, without exception, phenomenal. He makes the most difficult pieces sound effortless. I prefer CP over John Williams because, while Williams is also unquestionably a master, he sounds a bit robotic to me at times. CP, on the other hand, never sacrifices musicality to precision. He sublimely maintains both. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A poetic performance of a dramatic work
The problem with Perlman's Bruch concerto version is precisely that...is perfect!, he makes a lyrical or poetic version in a concerto that is more a dramatic piece than a poetic work, and conductor Bernard Haitink is a correct but also a moderate or austere conductor. But in my opinion Bruch's concerto requires passion, fire, emotion, and because of that I prefer Salvatore Accardo-Kurt Masur version with the Gewandhaus Orch. in Philips, now edited in "eloquence" a bargain collection from Universal. Other excellent versions are Arthur Grumiaux-Heinz Wallberg performance with the Philharmonia Orch., and legendary Oistrach-von Matacic version. In Mendelssohn's concerto is also preferable the Christian Ferras-Constantin Silvestri version with the Philharmonia Orch., a 1958 remastered recording, reedited in ROYAL CLASSICS, with an exceptional Beethoven's violin concerto version with the Royal Philharmonic Orch. conducted by the famous conductor Malcolm Sargent, or Nathan Milstein-Abbado version conducting Vienna Philharmonic Orch. in DG. Oscar Olavarra A.

5-0 out of 5 stars Running an infinite gamut of emotions
Having discovered and listened to Beethoven's nine symphonies at least ten thousand times during my teen years, his five piano concertos came into my life during a very particular moment. Along with Mozart's and Haydn's piano works, Beethoven's concertos constitute, for personal reasons, a body of work very, very dear to me.
5-0 out of 5 stars If I were to become deaf, this is what I would hear
This recording is simply amazing. The way Perahia plays each note in such a way that notes no longer exist but ooze out as sugary themes piqued by sweet harmonics which in themselves become the theme, over and over again, like undulating waves upon a lake. The 3rd and 4th are my favorites. The recordings are perfectly clear, limited only by your own hardware--speakers, wires, etc. The piano itself rings with perfect tonality. What can on say except that these recordings are sheer perfection. A definite buy.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best complete cycle.
Many recordings of the five piano concertos are available, to suit every taste and pocket.Complete cycles are usually on 3CDs, often with a price reduction over the separate issues, although some cycles are only available as a set, and not on individual CDs.Generally speaking, the most recommendable cycles are those by Perahia, Kempff, Fleisher, and Kovacevich.Alfred Brendel has recorded three cycles on Philips, but he is perhaps better attuned to the sonatas than the concertos. If one wants Brendel in these works, it is better to go for his cycle with Haitink than his live set from Chicago with Levine or the set with Rattle.Similarly, Pollini's earlier DG cycle is finer than his live recordings with Abbado.Read more

    Editorial Review

This slam-bang, take-no-prisoners account of the Paganini Caprices is just the thing for a rainy day. Considered the last word in virtuoso violin technique when they were composed--and still quite a challenge today--these delightful miniatures each get played to the hilt by Perlman, reveling in their technical intricacies while also making the most of their lively charm and musicality. This is simply one of the best solo violin recordings available, and it belongs on any Perlman fan's shortlist. Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not the best Perlman, and definately not the best recording of these capricci
Although I love (almost) all of Perlman's recordings and playing, I was mortified by these caprices. Although he deserves some credit for the speed he takes, the sound quality and intonation is lacking from what I have heard. Almost everything is sharp, and his sound is not focused enough for everything to come out clearly. I would recommend Midori's recording of these over Perlman's, because of a beautiful sound throughout all 24, and almost completely perfect intonation.

Anyone who can play Paganini this well deserves 10 stars.Check out track 5!

5-0 out of 5 stars The best Paganini Caprices in the world
I have listened to three versions of Paganini's 24 Caprices and all I can say is that this is probably the best version around period. Itzhak Perlman is someone I could worship for this recording. His rendition makes you feel that the maestro Paganini is the one playing. In its label it says "Great Recordings of the Century" I could never disagree with that. ... Read more

Parahia is no doubt one of the ultimate and authoritative interpretors of Bach's keyboard works. This recording is a good exmaple of his precision (Teutonically so!) and artistry in a beautiful blend. This is the "Mercedes" of the Goldberg! Highly recommend it to anyone who likes Bach, keyboard, or baroque music.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easily the Finest Goldbergs on Piano
Where Glenn Gould started Bach on Piano, Murray Perahia perfects the practice. This set of Goldbergs is perfectly balanced lacking both the frenetic pace of Gould and the Romantic overtones of Barenboim.Perahia successfully follows Andras Schiff into the Bach loam and emerges triumphant.

When Itzhak Perlman recorded this disc, many critics were surprised by the sobriety and quiet poetry of his interpretation, as though his many fine chamber-music recordings did not provide ample evidence of Perlman's qualities as a "serious" musician. Although beautifully written for the instrument, Beethoven's sole violin concerto does not offer many opportunities for the kind of virtuoso fireworks that have made Perlman famous. But as all great musicians will, he turned this fact to his own advantage. This sensitive, profound performance has already passed into legend as a classic in every sense of the word. Read more

Some people complain that Perlman's reading with Giulini is 'boring' or 'tedious'. But to me, he grabs the primary essence of "the classical concerto" in an interpretation thats so smooth and sensitive that it can bring tears to your eyes.
4-0 out of 5 stars OK
How about some drama? I've heard several 'dry' recordings of this concerto. You need Kreisler, Milstein or Francescatti for this one; they play Beethoven with the nobility of expression that his violin concerto requires. The Kreisler cadenzas are preferred, making best use of Beethoven's thematic material. Unfortunately, infobytes don't always include information on

This CD is an excellent introduction to Mozart's violin sonata's.Both artists are superb and play so very well together. I would highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful to re-listen to these works.
Many years ago, I owned, on vinyl, Mozart's Violin Sonatas.I don't remember the artists; however, I DO remember enjoying them immensely. Therefore, when the opportunity came with this recording to restore the complete Violin Sonatas by Mozart to my CD collection, I "jumped" at the chance. After all, this is Mozart's two-hundredth fifieth birthday; plus the recording is at a ridiculously low price, and MOST OF ALL, the recording features the esteemed musical team of Perlman and Barenboim--WHAT could be better than that? Please be advised, that my expectations have been fully realized and in actuality, they have been surpassed-the music is far more beautiful than I remember with Perlman and Barenboim making an exquisite musical team playing Mozart's gorgeous Violin Sonatas beautifully and sensitively!
5-0 out of 5 stars Simply Amazing!
This is a simply amazing recording.I was actually first introduced to some of these pieces that had been transcribed into clarinet duets. They are excellent for that medium, but they are absolutely brilliant in their original form as violin sonatas!

    4-0 out of 5 stars A well-sung compilation
Compilations usually receivenegative feedback from experienced opera listeners. However, this compilation by no means should be only welcomed by opera listeners, it should be welcomed by all music listeners. This CD is a great one to own for a first time opera listener. Also, for the person who wants to listen to opera once in a while and who does not want to buy a myriad of CD's in order to have the same amount of arias as this CD has.Eighty-percent of the singers are high-quality singers in this CD and the orchestras along with their respective conductors, do justice to the songs. All of the arias in this CD are what we in the field call, standard repertoire, and therefore are a good source for a beginning musician to help him or her listen to phrasing, colour, dynamics, language etc.I certainly recommend it, without a doubt.

1-0 out of 5 stars This cant be the best
Elisa from Italy is absolutely right--well, the present generation may not be able to listen the golden oldies and the grand masters in person but it is still true that the past masters far surpassed the new. De Stefano had a magnetic voice, but listen to Gigli singing Puccini's La boheme and you will melt away, though it is v v v difficult to get hold of his mono recordings, even in CD. I disagree with Elisa only on one point: Tebaldi is good, but Victoria de Los angeles' Mimi is better. And the indulgent Thomas Beecham is my favourite conductor of this opera, way ahead of Toscannini, but De Stefano's Boheme is worth keeping and listening to again and again....

1-0 out of 5 stars TRUE OPERA LOVERS CANNOT POSSIBLY LIKE THIS!
True opera lovers (I won't say "experts" 'cos I dislike the word) cannot possibly like this ... ! Apart from Callas, here there is none of the greatest artists! Callas may be great in Carmen but nobody can beat RENATA TEBALDI and her angel-like voice in all of Puccini's operas or in GIORDANO's Andrea Chnier. No Carreras can beat MARIO DEL MONACO in Leoncavallo's Pagliacci, or Verdi's Otello. And finally, NO ALAGNA, or PAVAROTTI, or LICITRA, or whatever CHEAP TENOR or CROOK can ever beat the greatest tenor of all times: GIUSEPPE DI STEFANO! Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Mozart Mass with a Difference. Buy It.
The 'Coronation Mass' or 'Mass in C major K. 317' by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart is just a bit different from the half dozen of Mozart's other masses I've been listening to lately. It is certainly at the other end of the spectrum from the great and famous 'Requiem' or 'unfinished' Mass, so famous from the end of the movie 'Amadeus'. This stands to reason, as the Coronation Mass is a celebration, while the Requiem is a funeral.
