1-0 out of 5 stars Great Music, Terrible Digital Mastering
When I ripped these CD's and put them on my computer and listened to them, my heart sank.
4-0 out of 5 stars Flaws show up in unbending concept
Volume 2 of the Beatles' US Capitol albums picks up where Volume 1 left off in the rather skewed version of Beatle history as presented to the American public, where the original British albums were divided into far greater number by mixing up the tracks with assorted A-sides, B-sides and EP tracks. The first of this second bunch of four creates a further anomaly by falling chronologically before the earliest album on Volume 1. The soundtrack album A Hard Day's Night is also missing, as it appeared in America on the United Artists label, though most of the songs from the British album find their place on other Capitol albums, such as Something New.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great, but......
It's the Beatles, so the music is great. The sound is an improvement over the original CDs.Starting with Rubber Soul, the Beatles recorded the three greatest albums in pop music.Listening to the album in the American version takes me back to the days of the mid-60's when pop music was entering its most creative period.

When the Beatles catalog was first issued on CD in the '80s, an attempt was made to standardize the releases (which often varied wildly in content internationally) by using their original British format. But this confounded many Fabs fans in the U.S. who now found CDs with track listings that often differed dramatically from their original American LPs. More maddening, the initial four releases were only available in not-so-glorious mono mixes. This four-CD collection of the band's 1964 American album releases finally addresses those concerns, and then some. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The sound quality you deserve and have been waiting for!
Although the packaging here just absolutely sucks, the sound quality here just flat out blows away anything we've heard to date, including the 80s mono releases hands down! Buy this and throw away the packaging if you have to, but you'll forget about it all when you hear these for the first time, the way they're meant to be heard!

5-0 out of 5 stars Must for Beatles Fans
This is a nice boxed set containing 4 cd's from the albums the Beatles released in 64. They are Meet the Beatles, Something New, The Beatles Second Album and Beatles 65. All cd's have the Capital rainbow label just like the original releases. All cd's also have all the songs first in stereo and the all of the songs in mono. This is the way they would have been on you're car radio in 64.

5-0 out of 5 stars one of their best
This is the best Stones CD of new material in years. They have never lost their edge. Laugh, I Nearly Died tears me apart. I can listen to this entire disc at one time. Having seen the band perform live a number of times, I'm interested to see this new material in a live setting.

5-0 out of 5 stars best stones in 25 years
i've been listening to the new stones CD (i downloaded it for a couple of bucks from gomp3.ru)and have to agree with the CDuniverse review, their best in 25 years. the guitar playing in particular is excellent. i checked the liner notes and they didn't use any outside guitarists so i have to assume it's either keef or ronnie playing the bejesus out of a fender.

Indeed, there were many who thought that it would take an event as cataclysmic as the one described in the album title to get these seminal '70s soft-rockers back together. But here they are, revisiting some of their most beloved tunes as well as four new ones, on this mostly live, largely acoustic disc. Frey, Henley, Walsh, Schmit, and Felder tackle iconic Eagles standards like "Hotel California," "Tequila Sunrise," "Take It Easy," "Desperado," and "Life in the Fast Lane" and new tunes like "Get Over It" and "Love Will Keep Us Alive" with the smoothly cocky assurance that originally made them icons. I was there for the DVD recording of this concert - Pure Magic - from an era when you had to sound good performing live. These guys still (after all these years)sounded like they were in the studio when live in concert - classic country rock. Lyrically beautiful, instrumentally perfect - it doesn't get any better than this!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Cd marvel
I'm not particularly impressed by CD releases of old stuff. But having seen the Who twice at Tanglewood in Lenox Mass about the time of Tommy I can vouch for the feracity of their playing. Heaven and Hell they opened with in one show and I always wondered why it wasn't released. After seeing Entwistle with dual Sunn amps and a Fender bass I was led to buy a 2000S and Precision myself and played for quite a while with this combination. They had it right back then and even though the openers wereBB King, Jefferson Airplane, Jethro Tull in either venue, they remain the greatest live band in my mind. Just watching Keith Moon do a rim shot and blow his stick into the air and catch it on the way down without blowing the song was worth the price of admission for me. This album brings it all back.

5-0 out of 5 stars put that cigarette out...
Better than the original if only because there is more of it. Young Man Blues has to be one of the great rock covers and beats any Jimi you may want to compare it with (in my view). Fortune Teller is less than I expected (having read much about its role in the Who's development but never having heard it) and the version of A Quick One is not as good as the Kids Are Alright/Rock'n'Roll Circus version (the best rock TV performance ever - except for Iggy doing I;m Bored on Countdown in 1978 maybe). It's Meaty Beaty Big Bouncy and FAST. Love it or it'll kill ya.

5-0 out of 5 stars Take That, Bootleggers
Originally released as a means to have an official live album in the catalog, The Who are heard in their sonic splendor mixed with the straight-ahead R&B roots in the Leeds University concert from February 1970.

When I first heard this I thought it was the corniest music I've ever heard. Then I listened to it more and more and grew appreciaton for all the songs. Now I am a huge Queen fan with all of their albums. This is the best Compilation I've ever heard.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for the Queen Newbie
This was my first full length Queen purchase.Back in 1992 I used to pop it into my cassette walkman (remember those?) and listen all night, when I was doing dishes, doing homework, etc.I never tired of it.I am still not tired of it.
5-0 out of 5 stars Classic Queen
I have listened to queen ever since I was a kid. There music is so kinetic and inspiring. Freddie Mercury had a voice that couldn't be beaten. This album is one of my favorites. It contains a great selection of their best stuff, from "Bohemian Rhapsody" to "These are the Days of Our Lives", early and new. I also believe Queen to be highly underated. I rarely hear them on the radio and many people I have talked to can only think of "We will Rock You" when I ask them if they have heard of Queen.

On their 1967 debut album, the Doors more than fulfilled the promise of their infamously challenging gigs around Los Angeles throughout the previous year. Whether belting out a standard like "Back Door Man" or talk-singing such originals as "The Crystal Ship" and "I Looked at You," leather-clad vocalist Jim Morrison exuded both sensuality and menace. The mixture, on the outsize album finale, "The End," helped rewrite the rules on rock song composition. None of this would have worked, though, were it not for the highly visual instrumental work of keyboardist Ray Manzarek, guitarist Robbie Krieger, and drummer John Densmore, whose work on tracks such as "Take It As It Comes" and the lengthy hit "Light My Fire" virtually defined the rock-blues-jazz-classical amalgam that was acid-rock. I started off with the doors at a young age, maybe around 8 or 9 becuase my dad was always playing his "Best of the Doors" cd in his car. Immedietly when i heard their sound, i was entranced by the music i have grown to love even more. I got this cd on a trip one year and it has become one of my favorites, i am even listening to it as i type this review. Here is an overview of the songs.

First of all the idiot who said this is the most overrated album of the 60's is a complete fool. That is the worst review I have ever read.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Doors Debut Masterpiece
The Doors debut record has to arguably be one of the greatest debut records of all time, up there with The Mothers of Invention's `Freak Out' (1966) The Velvet Underground's `Velvet Underground & Nico' (1967) Jimi Hendrix's `Are You Experienced?' (1967) The Clash's `The Clash' (1977) and Black Flag's `Damaged' (1981). The thing it lacks is the influential stature of some of the above albums but it had the chart success.

This is the first release in a three-part series that essentially amounted to the three surviving Beatles officially sanctioning the release of tracks that had been bootlegged for years. Thus, you get some of their earliest recordings as teens; the tracks they cut in Hamburg, Germany; their Decca audition tapes (which were rejected); and, finally, alternate takes and works in progress of songs that are now part of the world's consciousness. Oh, yeah, you also get "Free As a Bird," the John Lennon track the other Beatles "finished" in 1995; it's out of context in the company of some of the group's early classics. Beatlemaniacs, of course, love exploring this stuff, but the three Anthologies are hardly a place for beginners to start their explorations. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Listen to Shout! w/ earphones
The whole Anthology is spectacular!!I bought them when they came out 10 years ago.I'm sure this has been mentioned, but if you listen to Shout! from Disc 2; which was prerecorded for a TV special; towards the end, you hear John say "Everybody f@@in' shout now" 4 or 5 times. It went on the air that way and I don't think no one caught it.Pretty wild when you think about it.Incidently, that TV special was released on VHS back in the late 80s.If you can find it, it's pretty awesome.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not a Traditional Greatest Hits Collection , but a Historical Retrospective
The Beatles need no introduction when it comes to the elite of Rock/Pop music. When trying to "rank" the greatest artists of the Rock/Pop era, there is no doubt that the quartet from England ranks number one on just about every list. Going even further, the Beatles might be the top act in the history of modern music - among any genre. Some quarter-century after their breakup, the Beatles began to consider their place in history. This impetus played a key role in the release of the three volume, "Beatles Anthology" CD set and corresponding television documentary. One of the main attractions of this project was that it would bring the three surviving Beatles together for the first time since the famous breakup.Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr would collaborate together on two unfinished John Lennon songs: "Free as a Bird" and "Real Love" - creating a "virtual" reunion among the four band members. This three volume set would not be an ordinary greatest hits collection - it would provide a historical retrospective to the band through rare and unreleased material. It is the first volume, "Beatles Anthology 1" that covers the early days of the Beatles from their days as the Quarrymen through their material in late 1964 found on their fourth album, "Beatles For Sale".
4-0 out of 5 stars The first of a long overdue Anthology series
What you have here are songs that are outakes or unfinished in one way or another.

What can you say, really? When you get right down to it, it's the greatest band in the history of pop music, the most influential, the best writers, and whatever other superlatives you can think of. Given their phenomenal output, and their huge chart success, it's no surprise that this second volume proves every bit as rich as the first. John, Paul, George, and Ringo had that rare chemistry that moved musical mountains, with more great songs than many people have had hot dinners, and they're still affecting the course of popular music. Thirty years later, all the paths they hinted at have yet to be explored, which is about as high a testament as can be given. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Just a few pointers
I own many of the original 45rpm singles from Capitol (USA and Canadian), Swan, Tollie, Vee Jay, and Apple.I find it really interesting how many people don't have a lot of these songs. On the other hand, I was just a poor teenager who could only afford 45rpm singles. So my Beatles experience was from the viewpoint of the singles, not the albums. That has since changed for me, but there are many people who had the albums but not necessarily the singles. That's where Past Masters fills the gap. I thought I would just clear the air about a couple of songs.First, "Let It Be" (the single) has a different guitar track than the album version. The single's guitar track was from an April 1969 session, whereas the album version guitar track was from a January 1970 session. This was intentional. Also, the "Get Back" single has an extra lyric stanza at the end of the song, but the album version deletes this.I prefer the single versions of both songs, but that's strictly my choice.Lastly, the flip side of "Let It Be" is "You Know My Name (Look Up the Number)".This is a fun and weird song.I find it amusing that a lot of people are now only discovering this song that I've had in my 45rpm collection since 1970.Well, enough said.Enjoy the Past Masters volumes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for introduction to Zeppelin
The Early Days, were the introduction to Led Zeppelin for me. The Latter Days came shortly after. The reason I say these two albums are great (especially the first of the two) is how well they introduced someone to the band. The Early Days, when I first got it, I realized every single song on the CD was an absolute masterpiece and within a week, Zeppelin had surpassed GNR on my favourite all-time band. The complete studio albums came soon after.
4-0 out of 5 stars Leaves out too many great songs.
If this is a "best of", then why are average songs here when Zep has so many great ones?
4-0 out of 5 stars 5 stars for the music, 3 stars for the compilation.
Led Zeppelin is one of the greatest rock and roll bands ever. We all know that. This dual-disc compilation (enhanced with special live performances when played on your computer) gives us 23 tracks from their whole career.

4-0 out of 5 stars When I grow up, I'll be a singer.
This was the final volume of the Beatles Anthology series of rarities. It's a two disc set, with Disc One featuring "White Album" outtakes and Disc Two featuring "Abbey Road" and "Let It Be" rarities.A lot of this is demos or alternate versions of previously released songs, althought there are a few unreleased songs here.Of course, being the Beatles, most of it is very good, if not quite as good as the "official" versions of these songs. This is a must get for all Beatlemaniacs, although new Beatles fans should start with their regular albums before getting this.

4-0 out of 5 stars The third of three
Anthology three as with one and two also has outakes and unfinished songs.
5-0 out of 5 stars THE Beginning of the "Unplugged" fame!
If ANYONE is a fan of the MTV "Unplugged" series then you owe an appreciation to The Beatles -- as if no one has anything to owe to The Beatles -- for having this album released. Unlike the other "Anthology" series, this album (because of sound quality) seems as if it were recorded just the other day and opens the listener up to so many of the songs that fans fell in love with.

3-0 out of 5 stars "Selling-Out for money's sake"
I love The Eagles as much as anyone, but this album marked the end of what I loved about the Eagles. As a huge fan of Country-Rock and especially Southern California Country Rock, this album was a step in the direction of commercialism, and a "step in the face" of pre-Hotel California Eagles fans. Before this album The Eagles were the ideal Country-Rock band.Bernie Leadon(Ex-Flying Burrito Bro.) helped in defining some of those early sounds.Of course the record company wanted The Eagles to take their music in a more mainstream direction. So they dropped Leadon, and they also dropped their country sound.Hotel California is no doubt a great album in many respects, but true Country_Rockers should turn their ears in the direction of Poco, The Pure Prairie League, Firefall, The Flying Burrito Bros, The Byrds, Gram Parsons, Ian Matthews, and Buffalo Springfield.... and the first four Eagles albums

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for music lovers
I don't know why I waited so long to purchase this CD, I guess I was hesistant becuase of the possible "just okay" sound quality like some of the CD's I bought that were recorded in the 70's and transferred into CD, which inders one for appreciating the music itself.Well "Hotel California" is beautifully transferred to CD, I don't know if it was remasterred but the sound quality is awesome. You can hear every drum, guitar, background vocals, ascent and descent in the tittle track and that goes for the rest of the CD.Then ofcourse the music is stellar, not every song is a stand out like "Hotel California" but pretty darn close. This album defines a generation, an era, a style of music, maybe American music as we know it. You can go to every corner of the world and Ican bet you that you can get a few hopeless crooner to sing a few lines from "Hotel California." Careful, you might annoy someone if you play this CD a bit too much.

5-0 out of 5 stars Paul's Fatal Mistake
The story goes that Paul decided to end the band after discovering that John had turned over the Let It Be tapes to Phil Spector behind his back, and muzaked his beloved Long and Winding Road. But truely the real end came with Paul's refusal to release the last song on this anthology.

There are many gems that highlight THE BEATLES ANTHOLOGY 2. The interesting ones are the unreleased tracks such as THAT MEANS A LOT (a Phil Spector influenced love ballad), IF YOU'VE GOT TROUBLE, and 12-BAR ORIGINAL (a blues instrumental). Alternate takes such as GOT TO GET YOU INTO MY LIFE is totally different from the version released on REVOLVER. One of the most interesting tracks is the rousing AND YOUR BIRD CAN SING (also from REVOLVER)where the Beatles are laughing and giggling though the whole take (there are some hints they might have been on a "pot high" during the session). Overall, the CD's are a great companion piece to THE BEATLES ANTHOLOGY documentaries. However, there is one downside to this CD. On disc one, track 12, the live version of HELP!. It is obvious that John Lennon has forgot some of the lyrics and mumbles the misplaced passages to get through the song. One would think with hours of tapes in the EMI vaults, the powers-that-be could have found something else to fill the void. It is as if the remaining Beatles wanted to somehow slightly break down the Lennon-myth/legend. ... Read more
